The Last Step (2012)
10/10
step by step, to the last step!
25 October 2012
Sitting on my chair at Mercury Cinema, i was not that optimistic about the feature being even worth the time and money, specially when you see that the director is also the writer and lead actor! and i didn't feel any better for the first couple of minutes, but things changed!

Ali Mosaffa has gift wrapped the story to gradually unfold it before your eyes, and with peeling off each layer you constantly feel surprised and eager to learn what's next! Things that looks stupid and awkward in the beginning gradually starts to make sense and deeply touch the viewer.

The film has frequent symbolic references which is a signature for many Iranian movies, The beautiful and otherwise "perfect" house with the lame 'last step' resembles every seemingly "perfect" thing in life spoiled by an unwelcome imperfection - including the life itself, it's like Mosaffa has pictured death, the Last Step to any life, as the ultimate imperfection!

The film had so much to offer, and didn't leave me high and dry in the end, and fortunately it's 'imperfections' didn't rob me off the joy of watching it.
