I Could Never Be Your Woman (2007)
Great mindless fun
I enjoy good romantic comedies - unfortunately , I've seen many bad ones. Thankfully, this Pfeiffer driven movie goes way up the good list. Yes, the plot is wafer thin, characters are mainly 2-dimensional, but if you're after a smile-on-your face-for-90-minutes time, then pick this up.There are some issues tackled within the movie (nature, education system, puberty, divorce, ageism) however all is done fleetingly, superficially, I might add, yet pleasantly. Pfeiffer radiates her beauty even at 50, whilst Lovitz, even though used sparingly, shines with great comedic timing. I was also surprised by the presence of Paul Rudd. I had my reservations on his capabilities, however his acting here is downright funny, yet done stylishly. Again,if you want to smile, rent this.
Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (2002)
Torture.........to watch
I've always liked Banderas.
I don't anymore.
How on earth such an actor could even contemplate acting in such a ridiculous piece of tediousness is waaaaaaay beyond me.
There are absolutely no redeeming features - monosyllabic dialogue, wooden, stilted acting, John Woo-ish plagiarism - without the effect, mind-numbing musical score,NO sensible plot.
Please, for the love of God, do NOT see this film. Wish it on your worst enemies........no, not even !!
Rose Red (2002)
Tedious marathon
4 hours, in my book, is a long stretch. Seeing this film with the understanding that it should be viewed in palatable hour long stretches, then it may not seem to be interminably long.
Yet, there are absolutely no chills, no edge-of-your-seat suspense, no twists and turns, no laughter - just barrel-loads of boredom.
Its ultimately the usual yarn of a haunted house and a group of insane people going to spend a few evenings in this house. What they do, or what happens to them is so mild and at times, incomprehensible, that we couldn't care less if all die, or if all escape. And why, for the love of God, is Julian Sands still considered an actor
Even King pops in for a thankfully brief cameo role. But this isn't Hitchcock !!
Do yourselves a favour. Give this one a BIG miss.
Rock Star (2001)
Good Hard Rock music, poor soft movie !
Being a Judas Priest fan (on which the actual movie is inspired) and a lover of great rock and heavy metal, I was waiting to see this film with not little anticipation.
What we get is a roller-coaster of a movie, yet with only one peak.
The first half of the film is good, with solid performances by all, yet then it just goes crashing down once "Izzy" joins the Steel Dragons.
I'm not too sure on the actual identity of the film - is it a comedy, or is it to be taken seriously? The problem is that it hovers too much in the middle, not knowing when to laugh or ponder upon what you've seen.
As to the life led by the band, I believe it's waaaaay over the top in the exposure to sex and drugs. The guys do work occasionally, even though it never seems they do.
To be honest, I was expecting something in the league of Almost Famous my best movie of 2001 ), yet what we get is passable stuff. See it if you like this kind of music - if you don't, you can afford to give it a miss and re-rent Almost Famous.
Jeepers Creepers (2001)
Scary as hell - only for a while !
It's been quite some time since a movie kept me on edge, with a sense of unease and morbid anticipation for what's to follow. Unfortunately, the "what's to follow" is RIDICULOUS.
See or rent this movie for the first 30 minutes. After that, when you 'sort of' get to know what Jeepers Creepers is, switch off or turn to a Jerry Springer show - you'll probably be better off.
The youthful couple start off as believable, even though the kid does suggest to go back to certain place, which, to my mind, was ludicrous thinking on his part and also slightly unreal. Anyway, as with all movies of this genre, once you see the monster / villain, the movie plummets into comedy, without wanting to be.
Such promise, such a waste !!
3000 Miles to Graceland (2001)
Elvis romper that spells mayhem and buckets of fun
Forget the ratings.
This is one film that can either grab you by your blue suede shoes, or leave you cold, wishing for the end credits.
The film is your run of the mill heist of a casino (smacks of Reindeer games) that goes wrong...or right...eventually.
Russell is your perfect bad guy going through a weird catharsis to become the epitome of Mr. Good Guy. Yet the one who steals the stage is really Kostner. He exudes sleaze, coolness, anything that's rotten to the core. This is one true Elvis!!
Keeps your eyes peeled for Kevin Pollack as the detective in charge. His sarcasm is divine.
The film is slightly over long and does lose some steam at the end, yet overall, it's one mighty fine movie.
