Tsunami: Caught on Camera (2009 TV Movie)
9/10
Despite its name, a great documentary.
27 August 2014
I accidentally came across this film. It was a Channel 4 doc, and in the first minute I felt like I was accidentally going to watch a sappy yet terrible cheap tears doc feasting on the tragedy of others.

But I think it was the opposite. What a beautiful documentary. This has a second layer to just telling the horrible things that happened to these victims of a disaster no one is to blame for.

"What happens to a person who's lives through an unspeakable disaster." should be the under title of this film. Car crashes and boob slips are "Caught on Camera". This is a doc that Janice Sutherland should get credit for. Well done.

However, there were a few gaps. There are multiple characters in this film that don't get the chance to tell what happened to them. That's really too bad.

Great topic, very mediocre film
25 June 2014
How ever much I may agree with Dawkins and Krauss, it was hard to watch their story because of the film maker. The two are edited to represent atheist rock stars without the actual footage to back it up. Loud music and some inserts don't convince anyone these days.

Just show, don't tell by overdoing your edits. Besides, the locations visited weren't put to use to tell an overarching story. It was basically just following them. The only scene I actually appreciated as a documentary-like scene was the one where Krauss is constantly harassed for a picture or a question. That is fun, and brings the character to life. Putting them in one room and hoping something unique will happen isn't enough to make an interesting movie.

Luckily, Krauss and Dawkins are full of witty remarks and interesting insights, and that's what pulled me through it.

The Avengers (2012)

A perfect summary of cinematographic clichés
25 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I honestly don't understand why such an endless parade of cinematographic clichés is being hailed as one of the best movies of all time. Evil villain trying to conquer the planet? Check. Hot clever chick in tight clothes? Check. Battle in Manhattan? Check. And I can go on, from dialogue, to set dressing, alien design, blockbuster action clichés...

Nothing in this movie triggered me whatsoever, except maybe Robert Downey Jr.'s performance.

Nice bubblegum-popcorn action flick for a rainy Sunday, and maybe something for comic book fans. For all other occasions: Yawn.

Strong activist message, but horrible production value
29 December 2007
Wal-Mart: The High Cost Of Low Price scores high for its strong message. In a classical political pamphlet Greenwald makes exposes facts about Wal-Mart that make your jaw drop, even though you don't have to agree with him.

What bothered me extremely was it's horrible production value though. The soundtrack really stands out for its horrible quality. It is sometimes not anything better than experimental student television. As if they never watched the end product, pompous music is played bluntly over quotes as if they don't matter, and it seems they never took someone with them that had any knowledge of recording sound. Especially towards the end, I sometimes put my hands to my ears because of the wall of noise that was coming towards me.

Bad editing is key. Cheap footage is abundant. The camera (wo)man was creative in its framing, but seemed to suffer from Parkinson's.

Greenwald has wrapped a strong political message in a wet and wrinkled newspaper, instead of the great wrapping that it deserves.

Cold Feet (1997–2020)
Great series
27 April 2003
Cold Feet is a witty TV-series about three couples, which evolved from being a clever sitcom to (one of) the best series about couples in their thirties there is. It leaves all the American series seem like fast-food comedy.

Next week our network will be showing the very last episode of the series. A lot has happened in this last season, which made it more "soapy" than the previous seasons.

The acting and casting is great. The humour is original, innovation and clever all at once. I used to watch it with my brother and parents, and then with my girlfriend. It's humour for all generations.

Oh how I will miss watching at Adam, Rachel, David, Jenny, Pete, Jo and Karen.

American Pie (1999)
8/10
One of my favorites.
20 August 2001
American Pie is one of my favorite movies every, that is why I am so amazed when I read all the reviews here. I first saw this movie about a year ago, and have seen it about 10 times over again. The thing that spoke to me most was the excellent casting of all the actors and their interaction. They really looked like good friends who grew up together, and whole picture of them working their way through the end of High School was so familiar to me. I felt with those guys, and could image myself in the same spot. Added to that is a healthy dose of good humour (in its genre), making it a movie that amuses me over and over again.

And please, do not say that you're grossed out by it, that's about the same as saying that you went to see Nightmare on Elm Street and got scared. This movie is MENT to gross people out, probably especially Americans, for whom sex is still a big taboo. I wasn't grossed out by a masturbation scene, of course not, the only thing one could see even were some boobs, and I've seen those before. The pie scene was, in my opinion, just funny because of its oddness, and because of the great acting of Jason Biggs and Eugene Levy.

Yep, this is certainly one of my favorites, I can watch this thing over and over again, and still be amused. A big 10/10.
