The X Show (1999–2001)

Terrible.
29 June 1999
Utter drivel. The whole show lacks imagination; I was intrigued by their commercials, but the show is just plain annoying. The 11:00 news has more laughs. Avoid it at all costs. Geeez. And to think Fox canceled Penn & Teller and put on this thing...

Pecker (1998)
Excellent, Mr. Waters...
13 January 1999
In true John Waters form, "Pecker" offers a pure glimpse of human nature. Being human entitles us to our own unique quirks and eccentricities that make us individuals. When we 'seemingly' normal people are influenced by our ever-changing society, that is when the humor begins.

I think the true beauty of this movie is in the acting. Waters guides his cast into committed characterizations, adding layer upon layer of sub-text until they blossom before your eyes. Waters approaches his characters the way a painter approaches his easel and taking a mental snapshot, paints his perspective. Add all these factors in and you see why I say Pecker is a great movie!

Bravo, John. I always enjoy your work, thank you for sharing your art and perspective with the world.

Oscar-Worthy Performances from Norton and Furlong
11 December 1998
When I saw the trailers for American History X, I was mesmerized. I knew I had to see it. Edward Norton's performance in Primal Fear was spellbinding and his performance in this film was equally captivating. Then add in Edward Furlong's performance and you have a film that is worth the price of admission. But it goes way beyond mere entertainment. It makes a statement about our society, sort of like a punch in the mouth...

The script is excellent, the film's genre is superb, the acting is the best I've seen this year. I hope the Academy will consider these factors and award the artists who collaborated to make this film, rather than shy away from the controversy.

A final note. It's a pretty eerie feeling seeing your neighborhood on the big screen in such a vivid display of reality or driving through some of those areas after seeing this film.

A Very Bad Movie
10 December 1998
It was horrible. I wonder why I waited until the end to leave. The only saving grace was Cameron Diaz - her opening monologue was brilliant, it showed her skill and development as an actress. Sadly though after that her character falls to the wayside.

As a contrast, Christian Slater resurrected his character from "Heathers" (a very good performance) and phoned the rest in; I was disappointed because he is a very skilled actor and he made no attempt to give his character any layers or irony (as was true with all the characters).

The script was boring, it had no plot and relied on the gore to carry it through. The Saw-Z-All was too much. I felt nothing (i.e. sympathy, envy or anything for any of the characters. It is a simple case of Hollywood wee-nees scoring 'the rad movie deal (dude)' and relying on Cameron Diaz's popularity to bring in people to see her.

Finally, this is a movie that wouldn't end, just when you think it's over it keeps going and going and going and... It was more annoying than entertaining.

My advice to those who made it? Go back to making Marilyn Manson videos!!!
