The Next Best Thing (2000)
I LIKED IT!!!!!
I only went to this movie because I really like Rupert Everett! His facial expressions hit the mark every time. And of course he's gorgeous!!!
I haven't seen Madonna in much. I know she isn't much of an actress, but in this movie it didn't matter too much. I liked the story and felt that the story carried the actors, good or bad. As long as you are there to be entertained and not to tear it apart, you will enjoy it.
Benjamin Bratt was very good, too. I think he can make the transition from T.V. to movies with no big problems.
Go see this movie. It will make you laugh, cry, smile and catch your breath. Enjoy!!!!
Drowning Mona (2000)
Much better than expected!!
After Bette Midler's last film, She's The One, I didn't expect much. I like Bette Midler, but I'm afraid that she is just going over the top with her acting. Fortunately, in this, we mostly see her in flashbacks, so we only saw her in short spurts.
The idea for the movie was very funny, and the rest of the characters pulled it off nicely. I thought that Casey Affleck showed a lot of promise, and Neve Campbell was terrific.
I will recommend this picture to those who want some laughs without having to think about it too much.
Cradle Will Rock (1999)
I was disappointed
I had really been looking forward to this film. But although there were some great performances, the storyline was very confusing and the music was awful. You certainly don't come out of the theater humming these songs!!
As I said, the acting was mostly wonderful, but all of the political aspects were very hard to follow. I'm still not sure who was a bolshivec or a communist or a republican. I admit I'm politically naive, but I don't believe I'm the only one. A movie made for the masses should make it a little easier to follow.
The audience I watched it with got restless often. Not a good sign.
Man on the Moon (1999)
Carrey is great, Kaufman was not
I had to see this movie because I had heard how miraculously Jim Carrey had become Andy Kaufman. He certainly did. You forgot, while watching, that it wasn't the real Andy.
Unfortunately, if you don't care for the characters that Andy played, and was, this movie gets old fast. Except for Latka, on Taxi, and the Mighty Mouse routine, Andy's personas were pretty unpleasant. And the movie didn't show that he had any redeeming characteristics. It is not pleasant spending so much time watching a character that you can't root for or feel good about in any way.
But Jim Carrey was fantastic!!!
The Green Mile (1999)
I loved it!!!
I had looked forward to this movie ever since I heard about it. How could you beat Stephen King and Tom Hanks?
Then the reviews came out, most of them complaining about the length of the movie and how slow it moved. Were they at the same movie I saw??? From beginning to end it was so absorbing that I never thought about the time. And I never saw any one leave the theater for the restrooms, either. They didn't want to miss anything!!
The acting was so great and everyone fit their parts perfectly. GO SEE IT!!!! You won't be sorry.
The Bone Collector (1999)
I thoroughly enjoyed it!!!
What is wrong with just enjoying a movie??? It seems that most
critics just go to see how they can tear it apart. They all want to be so intellectual and cynical. Movies are ENTERTAINMENT. They are not the holy grail. Lighten up, guys.
This was the fourth movie I've seen this week. I saw Being John Malkovich, The Insider, and I even saw Pokemon. (With my grandkids).
I won't comment too much on Pokemon, but I really liked the other three. They all had a lot going for them, but this movie was the only one that never slowed down. It kept you on the edge of your seat the whole time.
Denzel was wonderful, as always. I thought the intimation of a romance in the offing between him and Angelina Jolie, was a little far fetched. But it was a minor irritation.
I recommend this movie to anyone who likes suspense movies. You will have a good time!!
The Straight Story (1999)
a wonderful film
This film finally got to my area, after being in only 3 or 4 theaters in all of Southern California, since its opening.
I loved it and think Richard Farnsworth is wonderful. I heard that they got him to unretire to be in this movie, and thank God they did. I can't imagine anyone else playing this part.
About the only drawback is in the dialog taking place in the long shots. Some of it was very hard to hear and understand. A film like this should be expected to attract an older audience and if any of them have a hearing problem, this could be a major distraction.
There was a large crowd in the theater with me today, (all ages) and they all seemed to enjoy it and applauded at the end. I wish we had more family pictures like this one. It shows that you really can enjoy a movie without the bad language or graphic sex. Good for you, David Lynch
The Best Man (1999)
Loved it!!!!
I'm a middle aged, white widow, who could not find anyone to go with to this film. It is definitely their loss!!
What a great film. All the performances were right on the mark. This movie is for everyone. It is thought provoking, funny and it felt real.
I understand that the director, Lee, is Spike Lee's cousin. Well I guess the talent runs in the family. Congratulations, Malcolm, on a terrific beginning!!!
Crazy in Alabama (1999)
Much more than I expected.
Antonio Banderas has really shown that he can bring out the best in his actors. Both Melanie Griffith and Rod Steiger gave the most controlled performances I've seen from them in years. Lucas Black, who is still new, was terrific.
There was a lot of humor in this picture. But it had nothing to do with the civil rights issue. All of the humor had to do with a bizarre aspect of the murder.
I highly recommend this film. It makes you cry and it makes you laugh. And it's for all members of the family over 12.
The Omega Code (1999)
They charge money for this???
I went to this movie, not really knowing what to expect. I hadn't seen any previews, but I had noticed that the reviews were not good.
For once I agree with the critics.
This was one big mishmash of a story. It was very hard to follow. When I read reviews of people who liked it, it reinforces my belief that if they can't understand a movie, it must really be an artistic achievement!!
Casper Van Diem is very good looking and that is about all I can say for him. Michael York is a very good actor totally wasted in this movie.
To sum up: This movie is right down there with "The Avengers,"
Superstar (1999)
I liked it!!!
While I didn't expect too much of this movie, I was pleasantly surprised. I am well past the age of the average Saturday Night Live fan. (I haven't watched a whole episode in years.) The other SNL movies have seemed mostly ridiculous and totally silly to me. But this one made you care about the main character. And the humor was not so juvenile. I laughed out loud several times, and had a smile on my face for almost the entire time. What more could you ask?
