U.K. based sales and distribution outfit Blue Finch Films has boarded worldwide rights to thriller “Steppenwolf” from writer-director Adilkhan Yerzhanov, whose credits include the Cannes selected titles “The Owners” and “The Gentle Indifference of the World.” The film will have its world premiere at next month’s International Film Festival Rotterdam as part of the Big Screen Competition.
“Steppenwolf” is a brutal story of an unlikely duo who will stop at nothing to find what they are looking for. Tamara is searching for her missing son in a small town consumed by violence. In a desperate bid to get him back, she decides to offer a reward to an amoral former investigator whose methods prove to be sadistic. Determined, Tamara decides to complete the mission with the nihilistic detective, no matter what the cost.

Habanero Film Sales has snapped up documentary “I Trust You” (“En vos confio”) from Juan Pablo Gugliotta and Nathalia Videla Peña’s Magma Cine in one of the more significant of multiple deals struck at a hectic Ventana Sur (Vs) in Buenos Aires.
Directed by Agustin Toscano, whose “The Owners” and “The Snatch Thief” participated in Cannes’ Critics Week and Directors’ Fortnight sidebars in 2013 and 2017, respectively, “I Trust You” follows former nuns Susana and Nélida who have been incarcerated at the Tucumán Women’s Prison since 2006, accused of a crime they insist they did not commit. They received a 20-year sentence for allegedly causing the disappearance of a teacher friend, whose body remains undiscovered. Susana and Nélida pray fervently every day for the body to appear and for the mystery to be resolved. Over the past 16 years behind bars, their lives have undergone profound changes.

In House of the Dragon, Matt Smith practically walks away with every scene he’s in. Only Milly Alcock really gives him a run for his money, but even then, they elevate each other’s performances rather than distracting from them.
But even so, there is something familiar about Daemon Targaryen. The mirthless laughter. The smile that only reaches just below the eyes. The way he seems mildly amused at being threatened, and enjoys nothing more than a really good nemesis. Viewers who have seen Smith as Doctor Who’s Eleventh Doctor will recognize a lot of the old notes.
This isn’t the first time he’s done this. We won’t speculate as to whether Jared Leto slept upside down, drank only human blood or tried to navigate by echolocation to prepare for his role in Morbius, but throughout the film he’s consistently outperformed by Matt Smith...

After her time in Game of Thrones, it was wondered by a lot of people what Maisie Williams would be doing since her career was still rising in a big way, and she’d become a favorite of many fans. But The Owners is one of those movies that many might think is a bit of a stumble since her time as Arya Stark was considered one of her best roles. This movie had the creep factor to it, but something still felt missing throughout the feature. From the opening to the ending, this movie is something that needs to be

I can’t remember watching a home invasion horror movie for a long time and then two come along at once. First, I watched By Night’s End and then The Owners comes along… I wouldn’t say it’s a sub genre I love but it has produced some really great movies – the likes of The Strangers, You’re Next, Don’t Breathe, Inside and Hush are all highly entertaining.
There is a tendency for lower budget home invasion offerings to go down the same path and stick to ideas that have been used time and time again. Meaning that many feel very samey. The Owners, at the very least, does try to do things a little bit different. So much so, that at about the...

Argentina’s Magma Cine is powering up a female-dominated slate with some of Latin America’s biggest talent. Chile’s Paulina Garcia, best known for her Berlinale Silver Bear Best Actress-winning performance in Sebastian Lelio’s “Gloria,” plays opposite another giant talent, Argentine thesp Mercedes Moran who co-wrote the dramedy “Norma” with Santiago Giralt, who directs it.
“Norma” revolves around the titular character, played by Moran, whose quiet life in a village is upended when her long-time maid of 20 years abruptly resigns. Now 60, she sets off with her new eccentric friend, played by Garcia, in search of the life she has always wanted.
Uruguay’s El Cielo Cine, an ad agency run by Federico Cetta that’s venturing into filmmaking, has joined Magma Cine along with Argentina’s Ají Molido (Alejandro Israel) and Los Griegos (Federico Carol and Giralt). Chile’s Storyboard Media, run by Gabriela Sandoval and Carlos Nuñez,...

“Parasite” is an often-brutal examination of wealth inequality, and yet its Best Picture win still counts as one of the few universally uplifting moments that 2020 had to offer. This Blu-ray release from The Criterion Collection arrives fully-loaded with extras, including director Bong Joon Ho’s black-and-white rendering of the film — anything but an afterthought, it’s a version that he and cinematographer Kyung-pyo Hong had in mind all along — commentaries, interviews, and a new essay from onetime TheWrap film critic Inkoo Kang.

Numerous genre films over the years have taken advantage of the trope involving a psychopath out on a rampage meeting up with someone or something far deadlier and more dangerous than they are. These have ranged from efforts like “Don’t Breathe to Bone Sickness” and even this year’s British home invasion effort “The Owners”. Now, newcomer Rony Patel puts his own spin on the formula with the new cross-genre effort Chop Chop, arriving on VOD platforms for rent or own October 20th through Gravitas Ventures.

VOD is for more than low-budget action movies. Janelle Monae, Millie Bobby Brown, and Jessica Chastain rule this week, starring in three distinctive films available only to home audiences. “Enola Holmes” on Netflix, and “Ava” are new to VOD this week, while the premium-price “Antebellum” is riding high in its second weekend at $19.99.
“Ava,” released September 25, currently sits at #1 on both AppleTV and Google Play at a standard new-release price of $6.99. It was a troubled production: Matthew Newton wrote the film (originally titled “Eve”) and developed it with Chastain, who stars as an assassin in a secret organization. However, he stepped down as its director about a month before production began in September 2018 after facing public backlash to his past charges of domestic violence and assault. (Newton pled guilty.)
Tate Taylor, who previously directed Chastain in “The Help” and “Ma,” replaced Newton; after the film wrapped, it was retitled “Ava.

“Mulan” (Disney) likely had the greatest revenues of any feature films available in homes this weekend. At $29.99, five times or more costly than alternatives and only in its second week of availability, the big-budget remake more than ever needs PVOD to bolster its chances to recoup its cost. With disappointing initial theatrical results in China ($23 million for its initial weekend), one of the countries where it is not streaming, Disney+ interest becomes even more important.
Perhaps the Chinese fiasco could lead to Disney replicating what Universal did with “Trolls World Tour” after its second weekend of home sales. It was an earnings call (not due for several weeks now though), but that is the one time the studio has released specific numbers on one of its releases ($95 million to that point).

Each weekend brings the latest batch of new releases to VOD and the various streaming services competing for both the eyes and wallets of viewers around the world, and the latest offering serves up a more eclectic bunch of titles than usual. One which covers everything from a $200 million epic and a surrealist horror to the usual mix of bargain basement genre flicks and even the return to our screens of Pauly Shore.

After devoting a decade of her life to HBO’s global phenomenon, Game of Thrones, Maisie Williams is going indie. In her first post-Thrones role, Williams plays Mary in Julius Berg’s The Owners, which explores a botched home burglary involving a group of friends and an older couple who practice medicine from the aforementioned manor. Williams’ character gets caught up in her boyfriend’s (Ian Kenny) muddled plan, and has to deal with the unexpected fallout.

Poor Maisie Williams. After spending eight seasons on “Game of Thrones,” with her character Arya Stark being orphaned, beaten, blinded and battered, she got a job as a Marvel superhero in “The New Mutants” – but that film, which hit theaters on Aug. 28, turned out to put a horror-movie spin on a Marvel movie by focusing on superpowers run amok in an abandoned hospital.
And now, only a week later, Williams is back starring in “The Owners.” And you don’t even want to know what happens to her in this nasty piece of work.
Or maybe you do want to know. Maybe you don’t see that phrase, nasty piece of work, as a pejorative. Hell, maybe I didn’t even mean it to be pejorative.

After eight seasons as Arya Stark on “Game of Thrones,” Maisie Williams is no stranger to blood, violence, guts and gore.
In her latest role, as a vengeful girlfriend in the gruesome thriller “The Owners,” Williams isn’t afraid to get down and dirty in the name of survival. The ’90s-set movie — directed by Julius Berg and written by Berg and Matthieu Gompel — follows childhood friends who break in and attempt to rob their elderly neighbor’s empty mansion. But when the owners come home earlier than expected, chaos ensues.
“I liked the script and I liked that it was set in the ’90s,” Williams says. “I just thought doing a psychological thriller would be really good fun. I’ve always loved the genre.”
Before “The Owners” is released digitally and in theaters on Sept. 4, Williams will hit the big screen in the superhero epic “The New Mutants.” After two years of delays,...

If you spend a lot of time watching horror films, there are a few things that become readily apparent. Firstly, old Victorian mansions are never good. And second, old people are fucking terrifying. Sadly, for the young people in “The Owners,” they stumbled into an old mansion that is owned by creepy old people. Idiots.

"I've told you a thousand times... shoes off at the door!" Rlje Films has released the trailer for a horror thriller titled The Owners, marking the feature directorial debut of French filmmaker Julius Berg. A group of friends think they find an easy score at an empty house with a safe full of cash. But when the owners, an elderly couple, come home early, the tables are suddenly turned. Conceptually this looks like the typical rob-a-big-house-that-looks-empty horror concept mashed up with The Visit. This nice elderly couple are actually maniacs who are going to torture you! Watch out, they are not so nice after all... The Owners stars Maisie Williams, with Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham as the charming Huggins, plus Ian Kenny, Jake Curran, Andrew Ellis, and Stacha Hicks. This definitely looks creepy! But mostly for horror fans. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Julius Berg's The Owners,...

Cimarrón, headquartered in Uruguay’s Montevideo and with offices in Brazil and Argentina and service company operations in Mexico, is working on four international productions to be shot over the next few months.
Apart from Toscano and Garibaldi, the company has projects in development – movies or series – with Israel Adrián Caetano, Anahí Berneri, Marina Meliande, Gustavo Taretto and Manuel Abramovich – some of the most courted of South American directors.
Toscano’s “Perro Feroz,” scheduled to shoot in May 2021 and produced by Argentina’s Rizoma and Cimarrón in co-production with France’s Gloria Films, is set in rural Argentina in 1974 and turns on Sergio, an illiterate rural laborer who...
