Two of the most celebrated shows in Emmy history are set to experience a weird awards season.
Saturday Night Live, which has won more Emmys than any other show in television history, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, which has won in its category eight years in a row, could both face the indignity of not being officially nominated for an Emmy as a result of submission rules.
The number of submissions in the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category is expected to be significantly lower than last year. In addition to SNL and Oliver’s HBO show, the only other shows understood to be submitting in this category are CBS’ Taylor Tomlinson-hosted After Midnight, HBO’s Painting with John and The Magic Prank Show with Justin Willman, which launched in April.
Per TV Academy rules, categories with fewer than 7 submissions will be “screened by the appropriate peer group...

The State of the Race
To be fair, and to not be a downer all the time about the variety series categories, the move to create a new Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category did re-energize this particular awards race a bit by putting “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and “Saturday Night Live” — two shows on huge Emmy-winning streaks — against each other for the first time ever.

In a case of art imitating life, The Neighborhood’s creative team has taken a big moment from Marcel Spears’ (Marty) life and has written it into the May 6 episode. The actor’s wife, actress Sarah Francis Jones, gave birth to the couple’s daughter Nola Renai Spears while at a Beyoncé concert in Los Angeles last September. In the season finale of The Neighborhood, titled “Welcome to the World,” Marty and his girlfriend Courtney, his parents, Calvin (Cedric the Entertainer) and Tina (Tichina Arnold), and their neighbors, Dave (Max Greenfield) and Gemma (Beth Behrs), attend a Toni Braxton concert. Before she can belt out “Un-Break My Heart,” the tearful ballad many bawled their eyes out to back in the 1990s over failed relationships, Courtney’s water breaks and she goes into labor – just as Jones’s had. Below, Arnold previews the big episode. The family gets a little bigger...

Costume Designers Guild Awards: ‘Barbie’, ‘Poor Things’ & ‘Saltburn’ Take Film Prizes – Winners List
Barbie, Poor Things and Saltburn took the top film prizes at the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards, which were handed out tonight at NeueHouse in Hollywood.
Poor Things costume designer Holly Waddingham won for Period Film, and Saltburn‘s Sophie Canale took Contemporary Film. The night’s first film prize went to last year’s biggest film, with Jacqueline Durran winning for Barbie.
Waddingham and Durran also are up for the Best Costume Design Oscar, vying against Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon and Oppenheimer.
Since the guild launched its awards show in 1999, the Academy Award for Costume Design has gone to a period film every year but thrice, with only Mad Max: Fury Road (2016), Black Panther (2019), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2023) bucking the trend.

Exclusive: When Jennifer O’Connell and Rebecca Quinn oversaw the then-titled HBO Max’s unscripted pipeline, the pair worked with Issa Rae and her production company Hoorae on series including Sweet Life: Los Angeles, which ran for two seasons and the reboot of Project Greenlight.
The trio are now getting the band back together after Rae’s Hoorae has struck a production partnership with O’Connell & Quinn’s Velvet Hammer Media.
The deal will see the two companies co-develop a range of unscripted series across genres including dating, social experiments and competition.
Velvet Hammer Media, which was founded last year, is behind series including The Big Bakeover for The CW and Empty Nest Refresh for Roku. The pair also introduced its Inside Access Program, which ensures there’s a line item in every production budget to hire exceptional Bipoc talent behind the camera and help them grow.

Issa Rae discusses how the television landscape is changing rapidly, especially regarding people of color in the industry.
Rae received wide recognition after creating, writing, and starring in HBO’s Insecure, which ran for five seasons on the premium cable network.
Since then, the media landscape has devolved, and Rae has noticed a trend where not only shows she’s produced, like Rap Sh!t, Sweet Life: Los Angeles, A Black Lady Sketch Show, and more, have been getting axed, but diversity seems to be heading in the opposite direction.
“It’s already happening,” she said in an interview with Net-a-Porter. “You’re seeing so many Black shows get cancelled, you’re seeing so many executives – especially on the Dei [diversity, equity and inclusion] side – get canned. You’re seeing very clearly now that our stories are less of a priority.”

Issa Rae’s career as a Hollywood writer-producer has included four series developed through the studio system, but she says that recent industry tides have her considering alternate avenues as a creator in the future.
“You’re seeing so many Black shows get canceled, you’re seeing so many executives — especially on the Dei side — get canned. You’re seeing very clearly now that our stories are less of a priority,” she says in a cover story for Net-a-Porter’s digital publication Porter. “It’s made me take more steps to try to be independent down the line if I have to.”
Rae is currently under a five-year overall deal with the conglomerate that was known as WarnerMedia when she signed it in 2021, an extension of a relationship with HBO that began in 2016, just before her Emmy-winning comedy Insecure premiered. Earlier this month, Max canceled her comedy Rap Sh!t after two seasons.

Amazon MGM Studios has released the first trailer for its remake of the 1989 action classic “Road House,” which will be available to stream globally on Prime Video on March 21.
The feature stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter struggling to make ends meet. After the owner of a Florida Keys roadhouse finds him sleeping in his car, Elwood Dalton becomes a bouncer and finds himself roped into a war of outlaws and bikers and a developer determined to build a lavish resort for “rich assholes.”
“Shrinking” star Jessica Williams, who confirmed to Variety last summer she’d be joining the cast, plays the roadhouse owner. She described Gyllenhaal as an “insane actor” in the interview.
“Every time, you’re learning. My job as an actor, especially on ‘Shrinking,’ is to make everyone look good by knowing what the hell I’m doing on set,” Williams said. “I love volleying,...

The long-delayed Emmy Awards for the 2022-2023 TV season had to overcome the challenge of seeming like a complete afterthought — and for the most part it succeeded.
The ceremony for the 75th Emmys was designed as a tribute to the medium, and featured reunions from shows such as “All in the Family,” “The Sopranos,” “Martin” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” the last of which featured the beloved, departed cast members Katherine Heigl and Justin Chambers, alongside Og stars Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. Among the evening’s highlights were Jennifer Coolidge thanking “all the evil gays,” Niecy Nash-Betts thanking herself and “every Black and Brown woman who have gone unheard, yet overpoliced,” and a moving, hilarious appearance by nominee Christina Applegate as the show’s first presenter. And HBO’s “Succession” took its final victory lap after the Jesse Armstrong-created series ended in May of last year, including...

Saturday Night Live and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver each came into Monday’s Emmy Awards on a long winning streak. Thanks to being thrown into a new category together, at least one of those streaks was bound to end.
SNL’s six-year streak fell as Last Week Tonight took home the Emmy in the newly created category of scripted variety series. The category came into being this year thanks to a rule change that grouped Last Week Tonight with sketch comedy shows SNL and A Black Lady Sketch Show. The change moved Last Week Tonight out of the talk show category it has dominated in recent years as the Television Academy decided it is materially different than programs like Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, CBS’ Late Show With Stephen Colbert and NBC’s Late Night With Seth Meyers.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver beat Saturday Night Live and A Black Lady Sketch Show to win the first ever Emmy for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series.
John Oliver’s HBO show continued its Emmy win streak, winning its eighth straight Emmy, having won seven years in a row in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category.
The TV Academy shook up the categories last year, launching Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, alongside Outstanding Talk Series and moved Oliver into the former, going head to head with SNL, which had won the award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series six years in a row starting in 2017.
Oliver, who was handed the award by Stephen Colbert, his Strike Force 5 co-host, and After Midnight host Taylor Tomlinson, started by thanking his staff, although pointed out that some of them were still in New York “burning down a bar there”.

Quinta Brunson has just made Emmys history — again. Last year, the creator, writer, executive producer, and star of the delightful elementary school-set sitcom "Abbott Elementary" broke records by becoming the first Black woman ever nominated for three different comedy categories at once. Tonight, she took home the trophy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy, and is the first Black woman to do so in over 40 years.
The last time the Emmys honored a Black woman in a lead comedic role was way back in 1981, when Isabel Sanford won the award for her role as Louise "Weezy" Mills Jefferson in the seminal series "The Jeffersons." With Ayo Edebiri winning Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for "The Bear," this is the first year both winners have been Black women. Variety’s annual Showrunners Dinner presented by A+E Studios on Thursday night gathered writers recognized on the publication’s annual TV Producers Impact List, as well as several of this year’s Emmy nominees. In addition, megaproducer Chuck Lorre was honored with Variety’s first Norman Lear Award.
Held at Merois, on the rooftop of the Pendry West Hollywood, the Variety Showrunners Dinner included a very funny acceptance speech by Lorre, who pointed out some of the similarities — but more humorously, the differences — between the two icons.
“I think everyone here understands the enormity and significance of Norman Lear’s body of work,” Lorre began. “So in accepting this award, I don’t think it’s false modesty to take a moment and focus on the very large differences between his career and my own. For starters, Norman Lear began his career writing for Hollywood legends like Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

January 11, 1999, 25 years ago to the day, was Jon Stewart’s first night hosting The Daily Show.
The comedian took over from Craig Kilborn, who had hosted the Comedy Central show from July 21, 1996. Stewart’s first guest was Michael J. Fox, promoting Spin City.
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart went on to win the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series for ten consecutive years between 2003 and 2012, before losing to The Colbert Report, a show that he exec produced, for a couple of years, and then coming back to win in 2015 in his final season.

Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” led all series at Monday night’s Astra TV Awards, scoring six trophies — including best streaming drama series. HBO’s “Succession” was close behind with five wins, including best cale drama series.
Organized by the newly renamed Hollywood Creative Alliance, the also-redubbed Astra TV Awards were formerly known as the Hca TV Awards. The Astras are unique in separating broadcast, cable and streaming into their own categories.
In broadcast, the biggest winner of the night was ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” which won four prizes — including best broadcast network comedy series.
Also on Monday, “The Boys” creator Eric Kripke was presented with the TV Icon award, while composer Ariel Marx (“A Small Light”) was given the Artisan Spotlight award. Liz Patrick, who took over directing Saturday Night Live two years ago, won her first primetime Emmy on Sunday.
She won a Creative Arts Emmy for the episode co-hosted by Steve Martin and Martin Short. She beat Last Week Tonight’s Paul Pennolino, Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s Andy Fisher, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s Jim Hoskinson and The Problem with Jon Stewart’s Andre Allen.
Patrick was nominated last year for the Billie Eilish-hosted episode but lost out to A Black Lady Sketch Show’s Bridget Stokes.
She has also previously won a number of daytime Emmys for her work on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The Costume Designers Guild has announced nominations for the 26th Costume Designers Guild Awards, with “Maestro,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things” and “Oppenheimer” among those landing nominations.
The costume designers behind “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon” will vie for the top prize in excellence in period film, while the artisans behind “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield” and “Saltburn” will compete for excellence in contemporary costume.

The Oscar chances for Best Costume Design frontrunners “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Oppenheimer” were bolstered by their nominations for the 26th Costume Designer Guild Awards on January 4. The Cdga will be held February 21, 2024, at Neuehouse Hollywood.
While “Barbie” was nominated in the sci-fi/fantasy category — and should prevail over “Haunted Mansion,” “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” — the other four compete in the period category against “Napoleon,” with “Poor Things” as the clear favorite here.
Meanwhile, the contemporary contenders include “American Fiction,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Renfield,” and “Saltburn.” None is expected to make the final Oscar cut, but “Saltburn” is the flashy favorite here.
In terms of the Oscar race, it looks like a feminist battle between Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things.

Taraji P. Henson broke down in tears during a SiriusXM interview with Gayle King while promoting her new film, “The Color Purple.” King asked the Oscar and Emmy-nominated actor if she was still thinking about quitting acting, which King had heard rumors of Henson previously saying. Henson responded by revealing she has hit her breaking point in Hollywood since she continues to be underpaid.
“I’m just tired of working so hard, being gracious at what I do [and] getting paid a fraction of the cost,” Henson said. “I’m tired of hearing my sisters say the same thing over and over. You get tired. I hear people go, ‘You work a lot.’ Well, I have to. The math ain’t math-ing. When you start working a lot, you have a team. Big bills come with what we do. We don’t do this alone. It’s a whole team behind us.
