Stuntman-turned-director Derek Barnes has expanded his 2016 short Walking Supply into a feature, which made its world premiere at this year’s Blood in the Snow film festival.
Walking Supply opens with a bang as the Russian offices of an international corporation are raided by armed men of unknown origin who kidnap several of the staff. The men end up in a labour camp, and the women probably have an even worse fate. They’re told if their company pays for their release, they’ll be freed. Until then, work until you drop if you don’t want to starve.

It’s been a strange last decade of acting for Aaron Eckhart. Everyone knows the actor as Harvey Dent from Christopher Nolan‘s 2008 blockbuster “The Dark Knight. But since then, Eckhart’s done mostly B-movies, actioners, and dramas that barely make waves at the box office. And for every hidden gem he’s done in recent years, like 2020’s “Wander,” there’s something like 2014’s “I, Frankenstein” that’s so abysmal one wonders why Eckhart signed on to make the pic.

The Amityville Curse seemed to bear a couple of its own curses. It’s an Amityville knockoff and after Amityville Cult, Amityville Thanksgiving, Amityville in the Hood, and so many more, it’s pretty much a guarantee of mediocrity. Secondly, it’s a Tubi Original, which usually carries a very similar guarantee.
But there were a couple of reasons to be hopeful as well. Director Éric Tessier may not be well known outside of Quebec but his adaptions of two of Patrick Senécal’s novels, 5150 Elm’s Way and more importantly, Sur le Seuil aka Evil Words, are both excellent. Dennis Heaton wrote the film, based on the novel by the late Hans Holzer. Heaton you may recall wrote the Billy Connolly zom-com Fido.

Initially scanning as a “Best in Show”-esque mockumentary send-up of megachurch culture in the time of #MeToo, Adamma Ebo’s feature directorial debut “Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul” steadily moves into darker territory, though Featuring stars Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown doing predictably divine work (do these two performers know any other way?), “Honk for Jesus” is equal parts hilarious and painful, an incisive upbraiding of the sorts of people who should have long ago realized no one — especially nattily attired pastors — is above God.
Once top of the heap in their Georgia town, thanks to their thousands-strong Southern Baptist congregation at the snazzy Wander to Greater Pastures megachurch, Trinitie (Hall) and Lee-Curtis (Brown) are months deep into a scandal that’s nearly sunk them. And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

If you're the kind of person who races to Rotten Tomatoes before you give a movie the time of day, then you probably think Wander isn't worth your time.
After reading this review of April Mullen's interpretation of Tim Doiron's script, you might be persuaded to give the film another chance.
Not only is the story unique, but it's brought to life by an all-star cast. When a group of actors like this assembles for a low-budget film, it's worth considering that they saw something special in the material.
Although it will be tough, I will do my best not to spoil too much of the movie here in the review.
The more you know about the story's particulars, the less likely you will be surprised by what unfolds before you. This isn't the kind of movie that you'll enjoy if you know too much.

Even as Covid-19 reduces travel, the public is in a holiday mood. Along with anecdotal reports of near-record Christmas tree sales and an increase of home-lighting displays, we say 11 Christmas-related films flourish this week on VOD and streaming charts. This includes some overlap between home viewing and theaters, as well as some oddball trends that suggest the platforms increasingly bleed into one another.
Our four charts each have a different film at #1; another two titles made all four charts. Apple TV has “The Grinch” on top even after weeks of Netflix play. GooglePlay still ranks “The New Mutants” as #1. Premium VOD entry “Let Him Go” leads at Spectrum, which counts by transactions; with a $19.99 price, that’s impressive. Revenue-based FandangoNow leads with “Honest Thief,” one of the top theatrical releases this fall. It has a mid-level PVOD price of $14.99, but as a new release this week it outpaced three more-expensive films.

With everyone seemingly in the big December “frenzy” in preparing for the big holiday the next holiday just days afterward often gets a bit of a “and also” status. You know, as “Happy New Year” gets “tacked on” to the “Merry Christmas”, or just engulfed in the dreaded (by those few that still think there’s a “war” on it) “happy holidays”. Since current events and health concerns will probably curtail or just completely eliminate those big “seeing out the old” parties, you may have to virtually watch 2020 tick away. This quieter “big countdown” could make you really reflect on how your life “so far” is measuring up. As this week’s new film release shows, a big traumatic event could prompt that feeling more than the “midnight bubbly”. And that’s why this movie couple, for most of the story’s runtime, is compelled to Wander Darkly.

The first week of December saw a lot of people watching holiday films at home. Makes sense; ’tis the season, even in this dreadful year. There’s also little in the way of new titles as competition — and the one major film to debut, timed to the awards season, failed to gain traction.
“Mank,” David Fincher’s Netflix biopic of screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, is considered a leading Oscar contender but debuted to very little initial response. Available on Friday, it showed up at #10 Saturday (the first day it could chart), and has not reappeared since. The black-and-white film starring Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried didn’t gain the attention of other high-profile originals like “Da 5 Bloods,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and “Hillbilly Elegy,” all of which debuted at first or second. Bumping “Mank” from 10th place was the 2000 Adam Sandler comedy “Little Nicky.”

A “Jacob’s Ladder”-ish paranoid thriller arriving just in time to find conspiracy theories plunked right in the middle of post-election American politics, “Wander” only muddies the water further. This latest collaboration between director April Mullen and writer Tim Doiron offers yet another unpredictable shift, but pushes its idiosyncrasies off a cliff before establishing any narrative terra firma.
There is some pleasure to be had in watching an atypically frenetic Aaron Eckhart as a Ptsd-afflicted loner wading deep into possibly-imagined evildoings in the Southwest, with Tommy Lee Jones and Heather Graham also welcome as two allies. Still, the film’s hyperbolic style and convoluted storytelling tend to exhaust patience rather than build intrigue, making for a muddle whose too-many twists and turns ultimately seem meaningless as well as implausible. Saban Films is releasing the Canadian co-production to American audiences via digital, on demand and available theaters Dec. 4.

This article contains spoilers for The Dark Knight.
Aaron Eckhart has been looking back at the role he played in Christopher Nolan’s revered 2008 Batman movie, The Dark Knight, and he feels strongly that Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent “would not approve” of his alter ego Two-Face, nor Bruce Wayne’s decision to take the blame for Dent’s killing spree in an effort to preserve his heroic image.
In his new film Wander, Eckhart co-stars with DC’s other big screen Two-Face, Tommy Lee Jones, so he’s found himself reflecting on his turn as their shared hero-turned-villain. Calling The Dark Knight “a special, special movie”, the actor states that Harvey Dent would have ultimately told the truth about the violence his character dished out.
“That’s the great thing about Harvey Dent,” Eckhart explained to THR. “Despite whatever is going on, he’s a truth-teller and he’s a moral center.

Aaron Eckhart is living on the edge these days, and he couldn’t be more excited about it. With April Mullen’s Wander set for release on Dec. 4, Eckhart is at the beginning of a “three or four” film run of independent releases that offer him the freedom he’s rarely found in the major studio system. On the set of Wander, Eckhart embraced the daily unpredictability of independent film, especially since it suited his character rather well. In the desert-set thriller, Eckhart plays Arthur Bretnik, an unhinged private investigator who’s trying to expose the conspiracy behind his daughter’s death.

"We're pinning down the truth." Saban Films has unveiled a trailer for a small town mystery thriller titled Wander, from filmmaker April Mullen. This just premiered at the Deauville Film Festival in France, but that's the only place it has screened. Aaron Eckhart stars as a mentally unstable private detective hired to investigate a suspicious death in the small town of Wander. He soon believes the murder may be linked to the death of his daughter and a "conspiracy cover up". From the looks of it, there may be some truth to this but not everything is what it seems. The film also stars Raymond Cruz, Katheryn Winnick, Heather Graham, Brendan Fehr, Nicole Steinwedell, with Tommy Lee Jones. This looks like so many other dusty small town crime thrillers, but at least Eckhart has a grizzled, unhinged character to dig into this time. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for April Mullen's Wander,...
