Despite the wall-to-wall coverage of Hurricane Katrina, there wasn’t a lot of archival footage of some of the more devastating moments that producers wanted to depict in Apple TV+’s Five Days at Memorial — like when the roof came off the Superdome and the 9th Ward flooding. So VFX supervisor Eric Durst said his team went back “forensically” to research those moments before depicting them in the limited series.
It took nine months alone to re-create the breaching of the 9th Ward levee.
“We had to visualize what that was, the breaching of the lower 9th Ward, where a wave of 12 to 20 feet was unleashed. It was like a tidal wave that wiped out everything in its path,” Durst said at Deadline’s Visual Effects + Screen awards-season event. “We wanted to be as accurate as possible. This event took 1,400 American lives. We had to be very...

The Berlin Film Festival has said it plans to reduce the size of its 2024 program and cull two competition strands as part of a widescale restructure to tackle a serious budgetary hole.
From next year, the festival will screen approximately 200 films, reduced from 287 in 2023. The festival said all sections, excluding the Official Competition, will present fewer films. Elsewhere in the plans announced, the Perspektive Deutsches Kino sidebar, which highlights new German filmmakers, will be disbanded. Moving forward, films by German newcomers will be presented in the existing sections Competition, Encounters, Panorama, Generation, or Forum.
The festival has also cut the Berlinale Series strand as an independent program. The TV-focused strand will instead be folded into the Berlinale Special Gala screenings. Berlinale Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian will now program the strand following the exit of Julia Fidel, who left in May after four years in the post. Fidel had been working...

Now that the first season of “Shrinking” is fully available to all binge-watchers, it feels particularly urgent to highlight this Apple TV+ series’ lead actor, co-creator, writer and executive producer, Jason Segel. Despite the impressive list of iconic comedic characters like Marshall Eriksen (“How I Met Your Mother”) and Peter Bretter (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”), he has never been nominated for a major TV or film award. With the rising recognition of “Shrinking” and Segel’s undeniable likability factor, the upcoming 2023 Emmy nominations could easily correct that mistake. Here are five reasons why Segel deserves a spot in the Best Comedy Actor category this year.
1. Segel has had an impressive acting career.
At the turn of the century, Judd Appatow’s “Freaks and Geeks” (1999-2000) put Segel on the map as a promising comedy actor. “How I Met Your Mother” (2005-2014) brought him worldwide fame as the adorable, silly goof Marshall Eriksen.

How I Met Your Father fans could someday get a taste of Judge Fudge. Jason Segel, who played the lovable Marshall Eriksen on How I Met Your Mother, recently addressed the possibility of reprising his role in Hulu’s spinoff series, How I Met Your Father. If Segel does make an appearance, he’ll join a growing list of other Himym faces in the spinoff, including Cobie Smulders and Neil Patrick Harris.

Review: Now and then, a series immediately clicks with audiences. The most recent example of this is the AppleTV+ series Ted Lasso which has united audiences across the globe with a heartfelt and hilarious look at a broken character striving for positivity and success despite the odds. It is no coincidence that the latest AppleTV+ series bound to unite audiences and critics, Shrinking, comes from Ted Lasso writers and executive producers Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence. Teaming with Jason Segel and an ensemble cast chock full of brilliant performances, Shrinking is my favorite series of 2023, thanks to a combination of realistic portrayals of grief, therapy, and parenthood while still delivering a hilarious, heartfelt,...

Twenty years ago, it was obvious that Judd Apatow‘s “Freaks and Geeks” would be a launching point for countless careers in comedy. But the last decade has proven that this was a group of actors who would only get more interesting with age. Case in point: Jason Segel, whose work in television on projects like “Dispatches From Elsewhere” and now “Shrinking” track a signifcant evolution in his work as an artist.

Apple TV+ dropped the full trailer for “Shrinking,” its new comedy series starring Jason Segel as a therapist who does just that, at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Wednesday.

"So how does that make you feel?" This question has been uttered by just about every incarnation of a therapist on screen, and the new series "Shrinking" is no different. Jason Segel stars as Jimmy Laird, a grieving therapist who realizes he's running on auto-pilot with his patients and trying to numb himself after the loss of his wife instead of actually dealing with his problems. Realizing he needs to make a massive change, Jimmy decides to throw the ethical rulebook out the window and tell his clients exactly what he thinks, much to the chagrin of fellow psychiatrist, Dr. Paul Rhodes (Harrison Ford). Rather than wait to hear how a patient "feels" about a situation, he's dishing out advice that will shake up their lives ... and his own.

Lily Collins, Charlie McDowell and Alex Orlovsky have partnered to launch Case Study Films, a production company that will look to tell compelling and outside-of-the-box stories through a commercial eye in both film and television.
Case Study will develop material internally and with outside filmmakers and talent, discovering, supporting and giving voice to the next generation of storytellers from all walks of life, as it generates projects for its principals.
The production banner has film financing capabilities through a strategic partnership with High Frequency Entertainment, which will afford it flexibility in deciding whether to produce and finance a project entirely in-house, or to find appropriate streamer or studio partners for it, depending on its scale.
Among the projects in development at Case Study is the Hulu limited series Razzlekhan: The Infamous Crocodile of Wall Street, co-produced by Scoop Wasserstein from New York magazine, which has Collins set to star, with McDowell directing.

“Bros,” one of the first romantic comedies from a major studio to feature an almost entirely 2Slgbtqia+ cast, will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The film stars Billy Eichner of “Billy on the Street” fame. Eichner wrote the script for “Bros” with Nicholas Stoller, who also directs. Stoller also directed “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Get Him to the Greek,” and, like those films, “Bros” is produced by Judd Apatow. Universal is distributing the movie, which centers on two gay men with commitment issues who find themselves gradually falling in love. Luke Macfarlane (“Killjoys”) plays the object of Eichner’s affection. In another milestone, Eichner is the first openly gay man to co-write and star in his own major studio film.

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
In the streaming age, it’s virtually impossible to verify a TV show’s success or failure. Viewing statistics are guarded or difficult to substantiate; traditional ratings only cover a slim margin of total viewership; network priorities shift from company to company, so one company’s “hit” could be quickly canceled somewhere else.
But “Yellowjackets,” well, it’s about as close to an empirical success as any show can get. The Season 1 finale pulled in 1.3 million viewers in just three days. During its initial run, episodes averaged more than 5 million viewers across platforms. The series became Showtime’s most-watched freshman program since “Billions” debuted in 2016 and saw considerable attention via streaming, which skews younger. On top of these ratings highs,...

From the old school ‘50s-era opening titles, you can feel what tone Charlie McDowell’s Windfall is going for. The director’s third feature plays up the Hitchcock aesthetic big time in its marketing, but tonally it feels even more adjacent to Rian Johnson’s bouncy recent works of mystery thrills, The Brothers Bloom and, especially, Knives Out. A three-hander confined to a single location, the film stars Jesse Plemons and Lily Collins as a tech CEO and his wife heading to their vacation home in Ojai, only to find Jason Segel’s character in the middle of robbing it. Knowing that his identity is blown thanks to a hidden camera he spots, Segel demands enough cash to be able to start a new life, and the unnamed trio enter into a tense period of waiting for the money delivery to be arranged.

In 1996, a plane carrying a high school girls’ soccer team to a championship goes down in the mountains. In present-day, the survivors of that event are adults who have never publicly discussed what happened during the many months in the wilderness before they were rescued.
Yellowjackets, Showtime’s new survival drama debuting Sunday (10/9c), chronicles the girls’ “descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later,” the show’s official logline reads.

The first television project from Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, two of the producers behind “Narcos” and “Narcos: Mexico,” is nearly here. The duo’s “Yellowjackets” series is slated to premiere November 14 on Showtime.
The premium network recently revealed the trailer for the upcoming 10-episode survival drama, along with the official description:
Equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story and coming-of-age drama, “Yellowjackets” is the saga of a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won their second Oscar on Sunday night, a little over a decade after their first win for “The Social Network.” Along with Jon Batiste, the longtime musical partners took home statues for Best Original Score for their collective work on the Pixar film “Soul.”
“Soul” is one of the only films with a music-related protagonist to win this category since 1999’s “The Red Violin,” joining (arguably) only “La La Land” over that span. It’s fitting, then, that the team behind it has the impressive musical pedigree to match. Batiste has been the bandleader for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” since its premiere in 2015. Over that time, he’s also released multiple studio and live albums, including last month’s “We Are.” He was also nominated in a pair of categories at last month’s Grammy Awards.

Patti Harrison has joined the cast of the Paramount Pictures romantic adventure “The Lost City of D.”
Starring opposite the previously-announced Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, Harrison comes on board in a role still under wraps. Adam and Aaron Nee are directing from a script by Dana Fox. “Lost City of D” follows a reclusive romance novelist (Bullock), who was was sure nothing could be worse than getting stuck on a book tour with her cover model (Tatum), until a kidnapping attempt sweeps them both into a cutthroat jungle adventure, proving life can be so much stranger, and more romantic, than any of her paperback fictions.
