Exclusive: Paramount Network is safe, for now.
ViacomCBS has reversed plans to rebrand the cable network, home to Kevin Costner-fronted hit series Yellowstone, as Paramount Movie Network.
Deadline understands that the company has put the plans, which first emerged in September 2020, on hold, in part due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has had a major impact on production.
The original strategy was to turn Paramount Network into the Paramount Movie Network, which would air 52 original movies a year with one miniseries or scripted series airing per quarter.
Development of these movie projects was originally being overseen by Meghan Hooper White, who joined the company from A+E Networks as EVP and Head of Original Movies and Limited Series in May 2020 but left little over a year later.

CBS has finally dropped the official trailer for Good Sam, its latest medical drama.
The show finds Dr. Sam Griffith (Sophia Bush) taking on the role of Chief of Surgery when her father, Dr. Rob Griffith (Jason Isaacs), falls into a coma.
The drama picks up when Rob wakes up months later intending to resume his career where he left off.
“Sam is tasked with supervising this egotistical expert with a scalpel who never acknowledged her stellar talent,” reads the official logline for the project.
Sam's father "defies Sam’s authority and challenges her medical expertise, the big question becomes whether this father and daughter will ever be able to mend their own relationship as expertly as they heal the hearts of their patients.”
It is a compelling hook, but the success will all come down to whether the show manages to portray the fraught relationship between the father and daughter well.

“Dear White People” actor Jeremy Tardy announced his exit from the Netflix series on Friday, accusing producers Lionsgate Television of racial discrimination in contract talks, a claim the studio has denied.
Tardy, a recurring actor on the Netflix series across all three seasons of the show, made the accusations in a series of social media posts, alleging that the studio did not give him the same opportunity to negotiate a raise for the show’s fourth and final season that a white co-star was allowed.
“After being offered to return for several episodes my team was notified that our counter offer would not be considered and that the initial offer was the ‘best and final,'” Tardy wrote. “This news was disturbing because one of my white colleagues — being a true ally — revealed that they too had received the same initial offer and had successfully negotiated a counter offer.”

Exclusive: Paramount Network has opted not to pick up a second season of comedic drama 68 Whiskey, an adaptation of the Israeli TV series Charlie Golf One.
The show, from Imagine Television Studios and CBS TV Studios, was well received with a 88% fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating. It also got off to a strong TV ratings start, with the January 15 premiere drawing 2 million viewers in Live+3 Nielsen numbers to mark the most-watched cable drama series premiere in the metric since November 2018. Following the promising premiere the ratings slipped, however, and overall the series ranked outside of the Top 100 in total viewers, adults 18-49 and 25-54 year-to-date (Live+3).
68 Whiskey‘s cancellation leaves powerhouse Yellowstone as Paramount Network’s only current original scripted series. The net’s dramedy Emily In Paris recently relocated to Netflix. Paramount Network earlier this year gave a series order to drama Coyote starring Michael Chiklis.

“Yellowstone” is proving to be a major outlier in a quiet summer for TV ratings.
The season 3 finale, which was already one of the most-viewed cable telecasts of the year in its live showing, grew its audience substantially in Live+3. A total of 7.6 million viewers tuned in to the finale after three days of delayed viewing, making the Aug. 23 episode the most-watched in the show’s run so far.
According to Paramount Network, the finale was the most-watched telecast in its history, and drew 10.7 million viewers once simulcasts and encores were factored into the equation.
Taking a more wholistic view, season 3 is up around 18% among adults 18-49 in Live+3 when compared with the previous season. “Yellowstone” was renewed for a fourth season back in Feb., as the show’s co-creator Taylor Sheridan inked an overall deal with ViacomCBS.

The planned series adaptation of the film “Sexy Beast” is not moving forward at Paramount Network, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.
The show was given a 10-episode straight-to-series order at the cabler last year. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, the move to scrap the series came amid budget cuts in the wake of the Viacom-CBS merger. “Sexy Beast” was still in the process of finishing scripts at that time, making it an easier cut. The show hails from Paramount Television Studios and Anonymous Content. There are plans to shop the series to other outlets.
Reps for Paramount Network did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment. Reps for Paramount Television Studios declined to comment.

“Emily in Paris” was one of few scripted series set to air on Paramount Network in the near future. The network’s only current scripted original is “Yellowstone,” which debuted its third season back in June with a fourth already ordered. Earlier this year, Paramount Network aired the Afghanistan war dramedy “68 Whiskey,” which is still awaiting word on a second season. The network is also expected to air the Michael Chiklis-led drama “Coyote” this year, though no premiere date has been set at the time of this publishing.
