It's been a busy week for Paul Giamatti. Having just signed up to lead Eli Roth's upcoming Hostel TV adaptation, The Holdovers actor is now preparing to boldly go into the Star Trek Universe with Paramount+ spin-off series Starfleet Academy, which starts production later this summer. According to Deadline, Giamatti will take on the role of the first season's as-yet-unnamed villain, a man with an ominous past connected to one of the Academy's cadets.
Giamatti joins Holly Hunter (Raising Arizona) — whose casting as Starfleet Academy's chancellor was confirmed last month — in the series, which is being helmed by co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. Here's the show's official synopsis: "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. When "Star Trek: Discovery" signed off last month, it left a few character arcs hanging. That's because the show's cancellation wasn't announced until season 5 had already wrapped, leading to a season finale that was reworked into a series finale with the help of quick rewrites and some additional footage.
Luckily, several main characters still got their happy ending despite the Paramount+ bait-and-switch, and Blu del Barrio's ensign Adira Tal was one of them. Adira joined the Discovery crew as an orphan with a Trill symbiont for a boyfriend. By season 5's ending, Adira had come into their own as a member of the crew, found a family in the form of parent figures Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) and Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), and amicably ended things with their partner, Gray (Ian Alexander), after he was separated from them and placed into a body of his own.

“I always tell people it just feels like ‘Tig in space.'”
That’s Tig Notaro on her “Star Trek: Discovery” character, Jett Reno, who’s a deadpan wisecracking, nickname-assigning engineer on the show. Out of the blue, Jett will call another character “Bobcat” or suddenly reveal an expected part of her past, such as her former life as a bookseller or bartender. Gauntlet thrown to Paramount+ to release the recipe for Jett’s “Seven of Limes.”
Needless to say, Jett’s become a fan favorite, and in a new interview with IndieWire, Notaro opens up a bit about just how much Jett means to her too — a lot.
“Yeah, who knows?” Notaro said when asked if there’s a chance we could continue to see Jett on “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” the planned series that will take place after “Discovery” wraps up. “Maybe the full-blown Jett Reno spinoff. I...

It may be going on eight years since a "Star Trek" movie has graced the big screen, but the franchise is arguably more fruitful than it has ever been. Several shows are currently on air, including the much-beloved "Strange New Worlds" as well as "Discovery," which is entering its final season, and plenty more "Trek" is on the way. One of the shows fans have to look forward to in the future is "Starfleet Academy," which will offer a glimpse into the world of the famed school for those who want to boldly go where no man has gone before. And it sounds very much like Paramount is sparing no expense with this particular series.
In a recent cover story for Variety about the future of the franchise, it was revealed that "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" will have the largest single set ever created for a "Star Trek" TV show.

Add Paramount+ to the list of streamers that have removed content from their platforms in exchange for a tax write-off.
The Paramount Global-backed streamer has canceled Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies after a single season, reversed its decision on a season-two pickup for the animated and kids-focused Star Trek: Prodigy, axed competition series Queen of the Universe after two seasons, and nixed a revival of The Game after two seasons. Additionally, all four shows will be removed from Paramount+ as the conglomerate joins Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery in taking tax write-offs for underperforming series. The news comes as Paramount+ will incorporate Showtime into the platform in the U.S. on Tuesday.

The trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ second season shows the return of Captain Pike, Number One, Spock and, well, plenty of strange new worlds.
There’s also the return of James T. Kirk, who is played by Paul Wesley and was introduced as a guest star during season one. Wesley is billed as a recurring guest star in the new season.
Strange New Worlds is a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery that launched last year and follows the voyages of Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck), Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) and Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun).
Absent from the trailer is a first look at the animated/live-action crossover episode between Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks that’s coming this season, directed by Jonathan Frakes.

Fresh off the news that Michelle Yeoh will be reprising her Star Trek role of Emperor Philippa Georgiou in a new streaming movie for Paramount + comes news that the film is part of a planned “phase 2” for the franchise. Star Trek: Section 31 was initially designed as a show, but according to an article in THR, the scope was too big to make a weekly show feasible, with it described as “Mission: Impossible meets Guardians of the Galaxy.” Instead, the plan is to make one streaming film every two years, which will be part of a planned Star Trek Phase 2 at the streamer.

Set course for Phase 2.
The next chapter of Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek franchise at Paramount+ is beginning to come into focus. On Tuesday, the Paramount Global-backed streamer announced that its long-gestating Section 31 series will indeed be a movie that brings newly minted Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh back on board with a feature film rather than what was originally intended to be a spinoff of Discovery, which reignited Star Trek for the conglomerate.
Sources say Kurtzman, whose Secret Hideout captains the Trek franchise under a nine-figure overall deal with producers CBS Studios, began making plans to convert Section 31 into a tentpole feature film for the platform last summer as insiders were nervous about oversaturating the iconic property. The idea to shift to tentpoles kicked in after Kurtzman, sources say, saw Everything Everywhere All at Once and realized the role would likely earn Yeoh an Oscar.

Star Trek: Section 31 is finally happening, but not as a series (at least, not yet).
Paramount+ has ordered Section 31 as an original movie, with Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh set to reprise her role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, a character she played in Star Trek: Discovery.
In the film, Georgiou “joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.” The project will be written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, both Discovery veterans.
“I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long,” said Yeoh. “Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched. To see her finally get her moment is a dream...

Star Trek has become a part of pop culture. While the franchise is rooted in a 1960s series, countless iterations have been added to the Star Trek universe over the years. In fact, you might be shocked to learn how many Star Trek series have premiered over the years, and the universe is still growing. Another project has just been announced.
Star Trek first premiered in 1966
Star Trek aired its very first episode in 1966. The series wasn’t an immediate success. It was expensive to produce, and its unique themes and storylines were a gamble. In fact, the original Star Trek lasted only a short time because of the cost and relatively limited interest. Still, the series spawned a loyal following. In many ways, those loyal fans saved the series from obscurity.

In the lore of "Star Trek," Starfleet Academy is located on Earth, just on the other side of the still-standing Golden Gate Bridge on San Francisco Bay. Any Starfleet officer on any "Star Trek" show has attended Starfleet Academy for several years, learning everything there is to know about diplomacy, tactics, xenolinguistics, starship engineering, history, and piloting. By the franchise's description, it's the most rigorous and intense college the future has to offer. Starfleet Academy is open to anyone aged over 16 years (or their home planet's equivalent) and not everyone makes it all the way through. Numerous stories in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" centered specifically on Starfleet Academy..
Non-Trekkies may recall Starfleet Academy being mentioned in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," and the school's notoriously unwinnable Kobayashi Maru test. Cadets are meant to fail to gauge their character and their command skills.

Starfleet wants you!
That, or whatever the Federation’s recruiting slogan would be, is something you’ll hear over the next couple of years, as Paramount+ has given a series order to a new live-action show, “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” the streamer announced today just two days after confirming multi-season orders for “Strange New Worlds” and “Lower Decks.”
Paramount+ will not confirm this to be the case, but the “Starfleet Academy” series is likely a spinoff of “Star Trek: Discovery,” which will conclude in early 2024 with its fifth and final season. The speculation then is that it would be set in that show’s 32nd-century timeline. A Season 4 plotline on “Discovery,” in which Mary Wiseman’s Ensign Tilly served as the in-the-field instructor for a group of Academy cadets before leaving the show altogether to continue being their teacher, feels like a backdoor pilot.

It’s official: Paramount+ has ordered a Starfleet Academy TV series.
After more than a year in development, the streamer has greenlit Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, plus released a description of the show.
The new series description and quote below from the showrunners seems to hint at a more soapy YA Trek than the other shows, as well as increased diversity (which, given this is the world of Star Trek, could refer to species diversity, as well).
