David Ayer directed one of the most unexpectedly huge hits of the last decade with DC's "Suicide Squad" back in 2016. What happened after was an unfortunate mess that Ayer found himself caught in the middle of. Now though, the filmmaker finally gets to be on the right end of a theatrical success story as his latest film "The Beekeeper" has found life at the box office. With the help of Jason Statham and a ridiculous premise, Ayer now has his first theatrical hit since his divisive superhero blockbuster.
Even though it didn't top the charts (that honor belongs to the new "Mean Girls" musical), "The Beekeeper" opened to $16.5 million, with that total growing to $19 million when accounting for the Monday MLK holiday, per The Numbers. The film only made $4 million overseas thus far, bringing its total to $23 million, but it is still scheduled to open in many key markets in the coming weeks.

You can add The Beekeeper to the long list of action movies named for the jobs their protagonist took up after laying down their weapons and trying to live a peaceful life: The Gardener, The Painter, The Bricklayer… etc, etc. Actually Adam Clay always was a beekeeper, that was the name of the elite unit he was a part of before he retired to actually raise bees. He does this on a farm owned by Eloise Parker somewhere in a very confused part of England that wants us to believe it’s actually Western Massachusetts.
Eloise, who is supposed to be a retired teacher and should know better, falls for one of those computer scams that says you have a virus and to call this number to have it removed.

From penning Training Day (2001) to helming the one-two punch of End of Watch (2012) and Fury (2014), David Ayer has had the film industry in the palm of his hand on a couple of different occasions.
Following the success of the latter, he then punched his own ticket to the Dceu, opting to write and direct Suicide Squad as a supervillain take on The Dirty Dozen. The film would star the likes of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Will Smith’s Deadshot and Jared Leto’s Joker, but despite one of the most celebrated trailers of all time at 2015’s San Diego Comic-Con, the subsequent poor reception to Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and the adulation for Tim Miller’s irreverent Deadpool (2016) caused Warners to panic and retool Squad on the fly.

David Ayer's 2016 DC Comics film "Suicide Squad" is a horrendous mess. It started with an interesting enough premise -- imprisoned supervillains are teamed up and forced to perform morally dubious acts of heroism in exchange for lighter sentences -- but the story wasn't clear and the editing was atrocious. Many were keen to see Will Smith play the supervillain Deadshot, while others were fond of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, but few were pleased with Ayer's vision of the Joker (Jared Leto) -- an updated, tattooed fiend who resembled Ninja from Die Antwoord more than he did any of the previous comic book iterations of the character.
The editing process for "Suicide Squad" was notoriously hellish. The film's first editor, John Gilroy, left the project early on and had to pass editing duties to the uncredited Oscar winner Lee Smith (who cut several of Christopher Nolan's movies). Infamously,...

Known for his work in Training Day (2001), The Fast and the Furious (2001), Fury (2014), and Suicide Squad (2016), David Ayer delivers yet another action-packed, bone-breaking fight sequence from screenwriter/filmmaker Kurt Wimmer‘s screenplay. Kurt Wimmer, who’s no stranger to action thrillers, is the mind behind the screenplays of some of Hollywood’s top action films in the last two decades. Wimmer wrote and co-wrote screenplays like Equilibrium (2002), Law Abiding Citizen (2009), The Misfits (2021),...

"We have laws for these things!" "Until they fail, then you have me..." MGM Studios has also revealed the first official trailer for The Beekeeper, an action thriller movie from filmmaker David Ayer. They're saving this until January, right after the New Year, which is always a sign it's not going to be good. The story of a man seeking vengeance against scammers whose mission becomes more complicated as the stakes become national when he is revealed to be a former operative of an organization known as "The Beekeepers." It's also "steeped in the mythology" of beekeeping, which this trailer opens with.

The seven-year-long soap opera about David Ayer and his ‘Suicide Squad’ movie just got a new episode. As we all remember, Ayer wrote and directed the first ‘Suicide Squad’ movie, which was released in 2016 as a part of the original plan for DC Extended Universe. Although the movie achieved great commercial success, it received negative reviews for its screenplay, direction, villains, and action sequences, although Margot Robbie received praise for her portrayal of Harley Quinn.

While filmmaker David Ayer is probably best known for directing films like “Fury,” “End of Watch” and “Suicide Squad,” he broke out in 2001 by writing “Training Day” and co-writing “The Fast and the Furious.”
The former won Denzel Washington the Best Actor Oscar. The latter Paul Walker/Vin Diesel actioner spawned an 11-movies-and-counting franchise that has earned a combined $7.2 billion at the global box office.
Ayer recently told Jon Bernthal’s “Real Ones” podcast that he has “nothing to show” for writing the top-tier blockbuster franchise.
“Biggest franchise in Hollywood, and I don’t have any of it,” Ayer declared. “I got nothing to show for it, nothing, because of the way the business works.”
“The Fast and the Furious” was based on a Vibe Magazine article called “Racer X.” Gary Scott Thompson and Erik Berquist wrote prior drafts, and the former got sole “characters by” credit for the sequels.

Add David Ayer to the list of those willing to critique Suicide Squad. The director looked back on his less-than-perfect 2016 film in a new tweet, specifically sharing regret over a certain tattoo on Jared Leto’s Joker.
Leto’s Joker was one of the most polarizing aspects of Suicide Squad. Four years after Heath Ledger wrapped up a stellar turn as the iconic villain in The Dark Knight Rises, Leto’s take on the character — complete with toned abs, a grill, and a ton of tattoos — wasn’t exactly well-received. Most notable of the ink was the word “Damaged” scrawled across the Joker’s forehead, an attempt at detached irony (?) that came off as corny more than anything.
Folks online accused Ayer — who previously posted an image of a different looking Joker with the caption “Original intent” — of skirting criticism of the film by accusing Warner Bros. of changing the movie and disregarding his vision.

DC is hoping to turn a lot of moviegoers into fans with a slightly lesser-known character this summer when "Blue Beetle" hits theaters. But it's not like nobody knows who this superhero is, as he has had a presence in the comics, animated shows, and -- more to the point -- the games for quite some time. To that end, the director of the upcoming film, Angel Manuel Soto, took direct inspiration for the hero's costume from the "Injustice" video games.
/Film's Jenna Busch was recently on hand for a "Blue Beetle" trailer premiere event. During the proceedings, Soto was asked about the character's costume in the film, which certainly looks a bit like the costume players are familiar with from the series of very popular fighting games. Soto did not deny that he took inspiration from the games and, moreover, revealed that Blue Beetle was his favorite character to play as:

If January sets the tone for any streamer’s year then 2023 is certainly going to be the Year of True Crime on Hulu. That’s right, Hulu’s list of new releases for January 2023 is highlight by several new true crime docuseries (and one charmingly goofy animated hero).
The true crime docuseries fest gets started with Death in the Dorms on Jan. 5. That will be followed by How I Caught My Killer on Jan. 12, and Web of Death on Jan. 19. The first is a six-episode series that will follow the real life case of murders at UCLA, while the latter two will both present several different stories.
It’s not just all true crime in January for Hulu. Jan. 9 sees the arrival of Koala Man, an animated series that envisions an Australian crime fighter of the same name. Also premiering is season 2 of How I Met Your Mather (Jan. 24) and superhero drama Extraordinary (Jan.

Shia Labeouf could be making a comeback turn.
Legendary director Abel Ferrara has exclusively told Variety that Labeouf has come on board to play the lead role in his next feature, which centers on the younger years of Italian Saint Padre Pio. Ferrara’s regular collaborator and close friend Willem Dafoe is also circling a role in the film, according to the director.
“We’re doing a film about Padre Pio, he’s a monk from Puglia. It’s set in Italy right after World War I. He’s now a saint, he had stigmata. He was also in the middle of a very heavy political period in world history,” Ferrara said. “He was very young before he became a saint, so Shia Labeouf is going to play the monk.”
Ferrara plans to shoot the film on location in Puglia, located in Italy’s famous heel, in late October of this year.

As is tradition, the Golden Raspberry Awards announced its winners on the eve of the Oscars. The Razzies, now in their 41st year, are a tongue-in-cheek ceremony that “honor” the worst films of the year. Scroll down for the full list of winners (and nominees) in all nine Razzie Awards categories ranging from Worst Picture to Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel.
Leading the 2021 Razzie Awards winners list is “Music,” Sia‘s ill-conceived film about the relationship between an autistic girl (Maddie Ziegler) and her newly sober half-sister (Kate Hudson). Sia won Worst Director while Ziegler, who is not autistic, and Hudson were singled out for acting dishonors.
“Music,” which was filmed in 2017, had been a surprise contender at the Golden Globes, earning bids for Best Musical/Comedy and for leading lady Hudson. Among those that Ziegler faced off against was Glenn Close for “Hillbilly Elegy,” who is also in contention at Sunday’s Oscars.

Exclusive: David Ayer and Chris Long’s production studio Cedar Park Entertainment will take the leap to indie studio status after sealing a partnership with Raven Capital Management. For Ayer — the writer/director of films that include Suicide Squad, The Tax Collector, Bright, Fury, End of Watch and Street Kings – and Long (former Programming Chief at Audience Network), the deal gives them the cash to allow for growth and autonomy.
That will include a move into acquisition and distribution of film and TV projects. Raven Capital Management is the Gotham-based private equity firm run by founder Josh Green and entertainment group head James Masciello, who acquired Open Road Films in late 2018 and brought back that distributor’s founder Tom Ortenberg to run it.

As we await the Academy Award nominations, the Golden Raspberry Awards have chimed in with their own set of nominees. The Razzies, as they’re known, supposedly celebrate the worst in cinema each year. Of course, they rarely actually cite anything more than the easy targets, so the 41st ceremony is going to be more of the same. Personally, I think things like this are wholly unnecessary, trafficking in negativity and snark. However, people get a kick out of them, so we’re sharing, nonetheless. So, take a look and then basically pay them no mind afterwards… Here are the Razzie nominees: Worst Picture 365 Days Absolute Proof Dolittle Fantasy Island Music Worst Actor Robert Downey Jr. – Dolittle Mike Lindell (The “My Pillow” Guy) – Absolute Proof Michele Morrone – 365 Days Adam Sandler – Hubie Halloween David Spade – The Wrong Missy Worst Actress Anne Hathaway – The Last Thing He Wanted & The Witches...

As is tradition, the Golden Raspberry Awards announced their contenders on the eve of the Oscar nominations. The Razzies, now in their 41st year, are a tongue-in-cheek ceremony that “honor” the worst films of the year. Scroll down for the full list of nominees in all nine Razzie Awards categories ranging from Worst Picture to Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel.
Leading the 2021 Razzie Awards nominations roster are two remakes: “Dolittle” and “365 Days.” Each of these ill-conceived movies reaped six bids, including Worst Picture. Joining them in that race are five-time nominee “Fantasy Island,” three-time contender “Music” and the documentary “Absolute Proof.”
“Music” was a surprise contender at the Golden Globes, earning bids for Best Musical/Comedy and for leading lady Kate Hudson. She is in contention here for Worst Actress and Maddie Ziegler is up for Worst Supporting Actress. Among those that Ziegler faces off against is Glenn Close for “Hillbilly Elegy,...

Sia’s Music, Robert Downey Jr.’s Dolittle, and the Netflix movie 365 Days are among the maligned films to receive multiple nominations for the 2021 Golden Raspberry Awards, a.k.a. the Razzies, the annual celebration of Hollywood’s worst films and performances.
In the prestigious Worst Picture category, Dolittle (“cinematic yak dung,” as Rolling Stone described it), Music, and 365 Days will face off against the Blumhouse horror reboot Fantasy Island and Absolute Proof, Mike “the My Pillow Guy” Lindell’s “documentary” about rigged voting machines.
