After Midge gets off the stage in the Paris nightclub, the former New Yorker who has been acting as her translator hands her a card and says, "Here's the card for my psychiatrist who just moved from Boston to New York. He's done wonders for Sylvia Plath." Sylvia Plath was a poet and novelist, best known for her novel "The Bell Jar." She committed suicide at the age of 30 by gassing herself in her kitchen oven, after several previous, unsuccessful attempts at killing herself. (The episode takes place in 1959, Plath ended her life in 1963 - clearly the psychiatrist did do wonders).
The stand-up routine that Lenny Bruce gives is a word for word take on his set from The Steve Allen show on April 5th, 1959.
The episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (One Hour).
As Midge finishes her set in Paris with the sad story about Joel giving her his wedding ring, a member of the audience says "I prefer Jerry Lewis". As popular as he was in America, Lewis was revered in Paris.
