“It’s intimidating for anyone to want to play anyone, just because life is so precious, and everyone’s life is so rich and so full, and you want to know that you’re coming into it with the best intentions,” says Kelvin Harrison Jr., who takes on the role of Martin Luther King Jr. in National Geographic’s limited series “Genius: MLK/X.”
The eight-episode drama chronicles the lives of civil rights pioneers Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X (played by Aaron Pierre). It’s currently streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.

It's the Circle of Life: Disney keeps returning to the same well over and over until it runs dry, at which point the studio is forced to innovate again. After a decade of raking in billions of dollars by remaking its beloved animated features as either live-action/CGI hybrid films or animated films with photorealistic CGI, the House of Mouse has finally started to see a slowdown on that front, with the 2023 version of "The Little Mermaid" falling well short of the box office heights scaled by the previous re-imaginings of Disney Renaissance classics. Of course, this particular money-printing machine isn't about to break down overnight, as several more re-tellings are making their way down the assembly line as we speak.
Along with live-action takes on "Snow White," "Lilo & Stitch, and "Moana," Disney is also working on "Mufasa: The Lion King," an extension of its 2019 computer-animated (I said what I...

Anthony Mackie told Inverse that he was so nervous to shoot opposite Harrison Ford on their first day of filming “Captain America: Brave New World” that he forgot the script. Marvel’s upcoming fourth “Captain America” movie finds Mackie’s Sam Wilson stepping into the title role for the first time in a feature film. Ford is a new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, replacing the late William Hurt as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.
“The first day was so intimidating,” Mackie said. “I was so fucking nervous I couldn’t remember my lines. He’s Harrison fucking Ford. There is this aura about him. But he dispels that really quickly because he’s such a cool guy. He’s everything a movie star should be. He would say, ‘Let’s shoot this piece of shit.’ And everybody was like, ‘Yeah, let’s shoot this shit.’”

What better way to beat the summer heat than with a long, pitch-black comedy from one of Hollywood’s indie superstars? If you, like a lot of people, missed this week’s streaming pick when it was in theaters, now is your chance to rectify that.
The contender to watch this week: “Beau Is Afraid“
The latest from A24 prince Ari Aster is too out-there to register with Oscar voters, even though it boasts an impressively literary screenplay and stunning production design. Aster’s three-hour Homeric freakout starring Joaquin Phoenix as a man-child journeying home for his mother’s funeral is the artiest and most divisive of his movies thus far, but it’s well worth the VOD price tag to hitch your own ride on this rambling odyssey. Beware penis monsters and Patti LuPone‘s wrath.
Other contenders:
“Chevalier”: Kelvin Harrison Jr. is going to get an Oscar nomination one of these days.

"Captain America 4" now has a new name. Originally titled "Captain America: New World Order," the movie is now "Captain America: Brave New World." Whether the new movie will pay tribute to Aldous Huxley's classic 1932 sci-fi novel "Brave New World" remains to be seen, and reps for Disney did not respond to Popsugar's request for comment about the change.
Anthony Mackie, who stars as hero Sam Wilson, announced the news on his Instagram on June 6. "When Harrison Ford tells you how kicking ass should look, you listen!" he wrote in the caption. “Captain America: New World Order” is now “Captain America: Brave New World.” Marvel Studios announced the title change for its upcoming fourth “Captain America” movie on social media alongside a first-look photo of stars Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford on the film’s set. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) reasserted its potential to be bigger than any upcoming summer movie with a stellar third-weekend showing of $58,230,000. Now at $434,330,000 domestic ($872 million worldwide), the Nintendo animated adaptation from Illumination could outgross all post-Covid titles other than “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($805 million). That includes “Top Gun: Maverick” ($719 million) and “Avatar: The Way of Water” ($684 million).
With a strong $23.5 million opening, “Evil Dead Rise” (Warner Bros. Discovery) also buttressed a sense of improved fortunes for theaters — just in time for exhibitors and distributors heading to Las Vegas for Cinemacon.
The third-weekend drop for “Smb” of 37 percent was a better hold than “Maverick,” which represented the stellar third-weekend hold of 2022. Another curiosity: if Universal doesn’t start its PVOD window countdown until a film grosses less than $50 million, it still have another month as a theatrical exclusive.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. is currently making music magic as the talented violinist Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges in the film "Chevalier." The 28-year-old actor has been steadily building his résumé for a while now, appearing in hit titles like "Elvis" and "The Trial of the Chicago 7," but "Chevalier" - which released in theaters on April 21 - is poised to be his biggest star turn yet.
Bologne was a French violinist and composer who worked to take leadership of the Paris Opera during the onset of the French Revolution. Harrison Jr. himself is a talented musician and plays violin, jazz and gospel piano, and trumpet, in addition to being a vocalist. For his role in "Chevalier," though, he had to take his violin skills to a new level. A violinist named Ronald Long was originally brought on to be Harrison Jr.'s hand double -...

Madeleine Gavin has a background in editing, working on the likes of Luce and Meadowland and that skill is also to the fore in her latest documentary. In it, she weaves together tense footage of North Koreans attempting the treacherous journey to freedom with first-person testimony from those who have defected and a potted history of the rogue state itself.
You can sense the background research and meticulous trust-building that has gone on behind the scenes almost immediately as we meet Pastor Kim, a South Korean who has been helping people escape the North Korean dictatorship along a complex ‘underground railroad’ for years. He has helped thousands from the dangerous border mountains of China down through neighbouring countries, via an unforgiving jungle and a river to the sanctuary of Thailand. Director Stephen Williams and writer Stefani Robinson joined TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival to discuss their new film “Chevalier,” a period drama about a Black 18th century classical composer who faced constant racism even as his music won the favor of Marie Antoinette.
Played by “Luce” star Kelvin Harrison Jr. in the film, Chevalier de Saint-Georges — born Joseph Bologne in Guadeloupe in 1745 — was the child of a white French plantation owner and an African slave. Taken to Paris at an early age for his education, Saint-Georges became a prodigy both as a fencer and a violin player.
His skills earned him a spot in the court of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, but they only got him so far: The racism of French high society cost him the chance to become the director of the Paris Opera. Prejudice...

The cast of the fourth ‘Captain America’ movie will also include Shira Haas as Sabra, Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader, as well as Danny Ramirez and Carl Lumbly, who appeared in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ series, as Joaquin Torres and Isaiah Bradley, respectively, reports Variety.

Odds are, most people know Julius Onah for directing "The Cloverfield Paradox," the third entry in the "Cloverfield" franchise and a film that was infamously surprise-dropped on Netflix right after Super Bowl Lii ended in 2018. I seem to be among the rare people who actually kind of liked the movie, though I also won't deny it's clearly an original sci-fi thriller that got messily re-tooled as a "Cloverfield" flick during its development.
If all you know Onah for is his "Cloverfield film, then you might have been a tad confused when Marvel Studios hired him to direct the fourth "Captain America" movie, "Captain America: New World Order." The sequel will pick up with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) at some point after the events of "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," as the former Falcon continues to settle into his role as the new Star-Spangled Avenger. Kevin Harrison Jr. (“Cyrano”) is set to star as the late American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in the new biopic “Samo Lives.” The announcement was made on the film’s website.
Julius Onah is set to write, direct and produce the biopic. Onah reunites with Harrison who previously collaborated on Independent Spirit Award-nominated film “Luce.” Onah co-wrote the script with Peter Glanz.
“Samo Lives” was developed by Endeavor Content and the biopic will tell and celebrate the incredible origins and global legacy of the New York-born, Haitian-Puerto Rican American artist, whose seminal paintings and street art defined the Neo-expressionism arts movement in the 1980s.
“Jean-Michel Basquiat redefined the idea of who ascends to the highest altitudes of the fine art world. But the complexity and richness of his experience as an artist and child of the African Diaspora has yet to be dramatized in the manner it deserves,“ Onah said in a statement.

Alexander Skarsgård will star in Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool,” a sci-fi thriller about a vacation that takes a twist.
Neon, the studio behind “Parasite,” will co-finance and executive produce the film alongside Topic Studios, which previously produced “Leave No Trace” and “Luce.” “Infinity Pool” comes on the heels of Skarsgård’s star turn in “Godzilla vs. Kong,” one of the few box office success stories of the pandemic era. Cronenberg recently directed the trippy horror film, “Possessor,” which Neon released.
Here’s the official logline for “Infinity Pool”: “James and Em are young, rich, in love, and on vacation. Their all-inclusive resort boasts island tours and gleaming beaches. But outside of the hotel gates waits something much more dangerous and seductive, beyond the edge of paradise.” Given Cronenberg’s out-there oeuvre, that “something” probably doesn’t involve lost travelers checks or a failure to apply sufficient sunscreen.

Filmmaking rarely travels a straight path, but for “Monster” it was exceptionally twisty. After the legal drama starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. premiered at Sundance in 2018 in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, it’s seen a title change, its first distribution deal fall through, and the original title restored. Producers Tonya Lewis Lee and Nikki Silver say it was all worth it: The movie premiered on Netflix May 7 and was among the top 10 Netflix titles in the U.S. last week.
“It has been a long journey, but it has been a really good journey,” Lee said. “It didn’t go the way we thought it would, but ultimately we landed where we were supposed to land. People are seeing it, they’re feeling it, and they’re responding to it.”

The New York City courtroom in which 17-year-old honors student Steve Harmon stands accused of felony murder isn’t the customary dark wood and tan walls affair. “Monster” there’s a reason beyond stylish production design for the palette of grays. For the involving, nuanced drama — a Sundance 2018 competition title starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. — explores the gray areas of guilt, innocence and criminal justice, especially as they pertain to young Black men, who are too often seen as guilty till proven otherwise. Innocent is likely too much to ask of a system in which young men like Steve are seen as the beasts, as the monsters of the movie’s title.
Streaming on Netflix, “Monster” is based on the 1999 young adult novel by Walter Dean Myers (who died in 2014). The themes of the award-winning book remain timely and are made even more so by screenwriters Radha Blank, Colen C. Wiley and Janece Shaffer.
