Action thriller Sugar Bandits will star Will Smith, while Sicario: Day Of The Soldado filmmaker Stefano Sollima will direct.
Will Smith is mere weeks away from appearing in Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, the latest chapter in an action-thriller series that has been going for almost 30 years.
Meanwhile, Smith has another action-y movie in the works. Called Sugar Bandits, it’s said to be a “big-budget action-thriller” written by Chuck Hogan, who previously wrote The Strain with Guillermo Del Toro and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi, directed by Michael Bay.
According to Deadline, which first reported on the project, Sugar Bandits will have Smith play “a former special forces soldier who runs an elite vigilante squad working to wipe out the drug trade in Boston.”

Suburra: Blood on Rome is a famous Italian mafia drama that delves into the Roman mafia clans’ rise to power and the conflicts among them. In 2023, Netflix brought out its continuation of Suburraeterna, a spinoff series of the original franchise. Suburraeterna is an eight-part series that features some key characters previously introduced in the prequels as well as some new characters. However, as we haven’t watched any of these prequels, it was very difficult to explain exactly the history of each of these characters. But here’s a recap of the entire eight-part series, discussing the major conflict in the narrative.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happened In The Series?
Suburraeterna Season 1 opened with Spadino being away from Rome, somewhere at a club where he worked to make his living. Meanwhile, in Rome, the local people were protesting on the streets against the government. They had been evicted en masse from their localities,...

In the realm of Italian mafia dramas, Gomorrah, The Boss of the Bosses, and Romanzo Criminale are worthy of note, but among all, The Godfather Trilogy stands out as a timeless masterpiece. Although not even close to The Godfather in terms of execution or writing, a similarly woven tale of Italian gang warfare and power battles among the clans in a tumultuous Rome is the famous Italian series Suburra. Suburra is a famous crime franchise first released in 2015 as a film and subsequently developed into a 2017 series of the same name. From 2017 to 2020, Suburra: Blood on Rome became a popular thriller that has recently been rebooted into a Netflix series named Suburraeterna. As we haven’t watched any of these prequels to this Netflix thriller, we can only review the recently released eight-part series, which is the continuation as well as a spinoff of the 2017 franchise.

“Suburræterna” is a series directed by Ciro D’Emilio and Alessandro Tonda. It stars Giacomo Ferrara, Filippo Nigro, and Carlotta Antonelli. It is based on the novel by Carlo Bonini and Giancarlo De Cataldo.
Sequel to “Suburra: Blood on Rome”, this series takes us to Ostia, where several criminal organizations vie for control of the city of Rome. The series explores all levels of corruption, from the lowest criminals to the world of politics, in a city where little seems to have changed since the Roman Empire.
Suburræterna Series Review
If “Suburra: Blood on Rome” was a major success, this sequel undoubtedly draws from the narrative elements that made the first season so popular: an intrigue that reflects corruption at all levels, and with a touch of Shakespeare and a lot of corruption from the Roman Empire, it provides us with an incredibly entertaining continuation.

For his follow-up to the 2018 addiction drama “Beautiful Boy,” Belgian filmmaker Felix van Groeningen and his life-and-creative partner, Charlotte Vandermeersch, have delivered an Italian-language literary adaptation that might sound at first like a rather familiar song, especially if you’ve seen that other melancholy tale about two men forming and fostering a life-defining love at a steep elevation.
Van Groeningen and Vandermeersch’s “The Eight Mountains” – which premiered in competition at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday – is more than just a Dudes Rock “Brokeback Mountain.” Still, there is something to the comparison. Not for any narrative likeness – as a story about friendship, “The Eight Mountains” explores a bond more fraternal than romantic. But on a thematic front, the two very different titles share a bittersweet belief that while our most profound relationships may lift us up, they all too rarely save us.

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re talking to Netflix VP of Italian Originals Eleonora “Tinny” Andreatta. The veteran exec was pivotal in bringing shows such as My Brilliant Friend to audiences during her 25-year career at public service broadcaster Rai and here she speaks to Deadline about the local and global strategy for her newest role.
When Netflix hired former Rai director Eleonora Andreatta in 2020 as vice president of Italian Original series, it was a monumental coup for the mega-streamer and a clear sign that the company was taking its presence in Italy very seriously.
Andreatta was seen as the most influential commissioning editor in Italy. Her distinguished 25-year career at public service broadcaster Rai saw her deliver around 500 hours of TV drama per year across its three main...

Ahead of the Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark hitting cinemas, here are 30 organised crime flicks you must see before you sleep with the fishes
Our criteria here is films featuring actual mobsters and the organised crime milieu – as opposed to hitmen, heists or bank robbers. Stefano Sollima’s punchy neo-noir, set in 2011, fits the bill with its imbroglio of crime families, political corruption and Rome real estate. Financed by Netflix, this is essentially a feature-length pilot for the addictive Suburra: Blood on Rome prequel series.

ITV Studios is growing its sizeable global footprint with a new Spanish scripted production company that extends one of the super-indie’s most recognizable banners.
Leading Italian producer Cattleya, the makers of “Gomorrah,” “Suburra” and “ZeroZeroZero,” will expand into Spain with Cattleya Producciones. Led by former Netflix executive Arturo Díaz — in a rare instance of streaming talent rejoining the production ranks — the company will specialize in high-end drama for Spain and the global market.
Díaz, who will serve as managing director, was recently director of original content at Netflix, overseeing series in Spain and Latin America, and based out of Los Angeles for five years. His executive producer credits include the smash hit “Las Chicas de Cable,” the streamer’s longest-running non-u.S. series. He also oversaw the development of “Elite” and the recent “Rebelde” reboot.

The CW has added an internationally produced thriller starring Patrick Dempsey to its coronavirus-proof fall schedule.
The network has snagged Devils, a drama produced in Italy featuring the former Grey's Anatomy star, who shares top billing with Alessandro Borghi (Netflix's Suburra). The network is holding all of its scripted originals — save for the final episodes of Supernatural — for early 2021 as the industry has yet to resume full production on series following the March shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Italy’s main film and TV industry organizations and labor unions have agreed on a set of production guidelines for filming as the country lifts coronavirus restrictions in the wake of Europe’s longest lockdown.
The production protocols, hammered out by Italian motion picture association Anica, TV producer’s org Apa, indie group Cna and other trade entities, still need a final green light by Italian legislators, though that is considered a formality that will be swiftly accomplished. Cameras will be able to start rolling on some shoots in June.
Apa chief Giancarlo Leone, who has been negotiating the protocols agreement, hailed it as “an important step forward towards restarting TV and film productions,” though issues such as insurance coverage, soft money availability, and beefed up tax breaks to offset higher costs, estimated to rise by 10-30% due to security measures, remain unresolved.

Exclusive: The fifth season of Italian crime hit Gomorrah is due to shoot at the end of the summer, we can reveal. But that could be the last we see of the mob epic, according to the show’s producer Cattleya.
“We expect to start Gomorrah between July and September,” Cattleya President Riccardo Tozzi has told us.
Marco D’Amore, who plays iconic character Ciro Di Marzio in the drama, will return to direct the first five episodes with series regular Claudio Cupellini also helming.
The scripts are currently in advanced development and “there will be a lot to prepare,” admits Tozzi due to the production challenges posed by coronavirus. As usual, the plan is for one episode of the Sky-backed show to shoot outside of Italy.
“I think it will be great,” said Tozzi about the new series. “Each time, we’ve tried to do something different. We’ve found...

With Italy gradually lifting some lockdown restrictions, local film and TV producers are busy drafting safety protocols to start shooting again, with June targeted as the start of the industry’s road map to recovery.
With close to 30,000 deaths, Italy has the second deadliest coronavirus outbreak in Europe, behind the U.K., but is now flattening the curve. On May 4, it entered its so-called “phase two” with some workplaces reopening.
The same day, the central Lazio region, which is the Italian industry’s main hub comprising Rome and Cinecittà Studios, announced that productions could start up again, prompting some premature trumpeting in local media that physical production of films and TV series has already restarted. However, the reality of reviving production is a far more complicated picture.
“Production activity as a whole can indeed restart, but there are many aspects to this, including preparation and opening offices again,” says Francesca Cima,...

In early March, one day before cameras were set to roll in Milan on upcoming Netflix Italian original “Zero,” about the lives of black Italian youths, producer Nicola De Angelis and the streaming giant decided to halt production on the show due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Italy was not yet on lockdown, but De Angelis and Netflix Director of International Originals Felipe Tewes agreed that going ahead would have been complicated “and posed a serious health threat to the cast and crew,” whom, De Angelis points out, Netflix is now trying to support economically during the interlude until shooting restarts.
“Zero” actors, several of whom are non-professionals, are meanwhile being coached remotely, as scripts get polished in hopes that shooting can take place sometime this summer.
Italy is the hardest hit country in Europe, with 25,549 deaths to date, and 189,973 confirmed cases. Its death toll is second only to the U.

The streamer is looking for a presitgious, central location in the Eternal City.
Netflix will relocate its Italian team from Amsterdam to Rome within the next year, according to reports in Italian newspaper Il Messaggero today (January 24).
The move is understood to have been prompted by a tax evasion investigation into Netflix by Gaetano Ruta, the vice-district attorney of Milan in 2019. Italian law requires the streaming compamny, and any other Ott operating in the territory, to have an Italian headquarters.
No official address nor area in which the office will be based has yet been confirmed but Il Messaggero said...
