Molly Gordon makes everything better. She was a stand-out among stand-outs in films like Good Boys, Booksmart, and Shiva Baby. Then she showed her talents on the other side of the camera, co-writing/directing the hilarious indie hit Theater Camp. Now she plays Claire on the beloved series The Bear, which is about to drop its third season. On this episode she talks about why she loves improv, how her parents unintentionally formed her comedy sensibilities, getting “buzzed” from in-person auditions, “locking in” with Jeremy Allen White, why she’s always aspiring to a child-like lack of self consciousness, and much more. Exclusive: Grey Sloan is losing a surgical intern. Midori Francis, who has played Mika Yasuda on Grey’s Anatomy for the last two seasons, is departing the medical drama as a series regular, Deadline has learned. According to sources, Francis is in negotiations to return next season to wrap up the story of her character.
I hear this was an amicable decision. Francis had been looking to branch out for the next step of her career and signed with WME earlier this year. She is the second Grey’s Anatomy series regular who will be departing early next season, along with Jake Borelli who has played Levi Schmitt for seven seasons. Reps for ABC and ABC Signature, which produces Grey’s Anatomy, declined comment.

Theater Camp director Molly Gordon is on board to helm Small Parts, a reimagining for Searchlight Pictures of Outrageous Fortune, which starred Bette Midler and Shelley Long as rivals.
Gordon, who also stars in The Bear, and co-writer Allie Levitan will do a new take on the 1987 comedy directed by Arther Hiller. Small Parts will center on rival actors who clash on a scrappy indie film set and accidentally find themselves entangled in a game of cat-and-mouse more outrageous than any movie, according to a synopsis from the producers.
The Small Parts project is in development, with Searchlight senior vp of production Taylor Friedman overseeing. For Searchlight, Gordon recently co-directed, co-wrote and starred in Theater Camp, which earned the Sundance U.S. dramatic special jury award for ensemble.

May has only just arrived, and it’s already heating up at Hulu! Dozens of new titles have moved in for the new month, with some of streamer’s biggest hits landing on the platform during its first weekend, including Season 3 of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s “Welcome to Wrexham” and Season 5 of “The Kardashians,” but Hulu will be adding major titles all month long, from the premiere of the coming-of-age comedy film “Prom Dates” to the streaming debut of last year’s psychological thriller “Eileen.”

Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2024 is missing a certain amount of original series firepower. In the place of a blockbuster like The Handmaid’s Tale or Shōgun, however, is some content diversity.
The first of the month sees the premiere of four-episode British series Shardlake. This mystery drama takes place during the reign of Henry VIII and features none other than Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) investigating a murder. Other series of note this month include the Korean drama Uncle Samsik on May 15.
Movies are bit more interesting on Hulu in May. Teen comedy Prom Dates premieres on May 3. That will be followed by the 2023 Adam Drive film Ferrari on May 24. Before all that though is the real heavy hitter. You can watch Austin Butler’s acclaimed performance as The King in Elvis as early as May 1. Sundance Film Festival is heading to London again this summer and the programme is full of cinematic goodies. More below.
The days are getting lighter, the sun is shining ever so slightly more now and we’ve packed away our thickest wool jumpers, although we still need some thick socks. That must mean one thing and one thing only.
Sundance Film Festival: London is almost upon us.
Some might say summer is coming too, but we’re mostly excited for Sundance London, which has just revealed their full programme for this year’s festival. The festival brings a fine selection of films which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, in Park City, Utah. The crème de la crème, so to speak.
The festival will open on 6 June with a screening of Kneecap, Rich Peppiatt’s Irish-language film and draw to a close on 9 June with Sean Wang...

What’s the best destination for spring TV? IndieWire doesn’t have a definitive answer, but as we do every month we’ll help you weigh the options with a breakdown of everything coming to your favorite streaming platforms in May.
The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

Seth Rogen’s production company Point Grey Pictures is teaming up with the studio that backed its raunchy, R-rated hits like “Neighbors,” “Good Boys” and “Blockers.”
Universal Pictures has forged a first-look film partnership with Point Grey Pictures, the company that Rogen co-founded with Evan Goldberg in 2011. James Weaver, a longtime producing partner, is the president of Point Grey, which is named after the Vancouver secondary school where Rogen and Goldberg first met.
“Seth, Evan and James have developed a filmmaking brand entirely their own,” said Donna Langley, chairman of NBCUniversal Studio Group and chief content officer. “Whether we’re watching their stories of teenage turtles, anthropomorphic groceries, or foul-mouthed sixth graders making epically bad decisions, they always manage to blend Point Grey’s signature edgy humor with humanity and heart.”
Point Grey’s recent slate includes the Prime Video series “The Boys” and spinoffs “Gen V” and the newly announced “Mexico.

Seth Rogen and his Point Grey Pictures are pledging their fealty to “Dame Donna Langley”, cheekily agreeing to be knights in service of Langley’s kingdom at Universal Pictures.

“Becoming newly anointed knights in the kingdom of Dame Donna Langley is an honour and privilege we do not take lightly,” Rogen, Goldberg and Weaver said in a statement — note the British “u.” “We pledge to win grand box office battles alongside Peter Cramer, Erik Baiers and the rest of our partners at Universal, and shall duly make the Universal coffers overfloweth.”

Point Grey Pictures, the powerhouse production company run by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver, has signed a first-look deal with Universal Pictures.
Details of the deal are being kept in a purple haze but it is being described as a traditional film pact in which Point Grey will produce movies across various genres.
The company previously had a content deal with Lionsgate, a pact signed in 2019, and prior to that, with production company Good Universe. Sources say Point Grey’s television deal will remain with Lionsgate.
Point Grey and Universal have worked together before. The banner produced comedy hits Neighbors, and its sequel, both in which Rogen starred, as well as the very well-regarded comedy Good Boys and the profitable Blockers.

After starring in the comedy Vacation Friends (which I enjoyed much more than our reviewer did) and its sequel (didn’t watch that one yet) for the Hulu streaming service, Lil Rel Howery has taken the lead in another Hulu Original – but this time they switched up genres. Their new collaboration is the sci-fi horror movie The Mill, which is set to start streaming on October 9th as part of the service’s “Huluween” event. With that release date just over a week away, we’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for The Mill, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Directed by Sean King O’Grady (We Need to Do Something) from a screenplay by Jeffrey David Thomas (All American: Homecoming), The Mill sees Howery playing the role of a white-collar businessman who mysteriously wakes up in an open-air prison cell containing only an old grist mill.

Anyone who knows and loves a theater kid understands that they can be… a little much. To their credit, theater kids accept and embrace this reputation. Both the excessiveness of theater kids and their willingness to celebrate their extremities can be seen in the comedy Theater Camp, directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman. After winning over critics and earning a strong, if limited, return in theaters, Theater Camp has come to Hulu.
Based on a short film that Gordon and Lieberman made with Ben Platt and Noah Galvin, Theater Camp features a group of theater kids trying to save their camp from the founder’s jerky son, who wants to sell it off for something more profitable. Both self-aware and sincere, Theater Camp is a love letter to the over-the-top nerds who can sing every word of A Chorus Line and know that Andrew Rannells was in Street Sharks.

It's a dog's life for R-rated comedies at the box office these days, and "Strays" is the latest unlucky puppy to learn that lesson. Directed by Josh Greenbaum and featuring the voices of Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx, the raunchy talking-animal adventure is heading for an estimated opening weekend of $8.5 million (via The Hollywood Reporter), which will leave it scrapping for fourth place against "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem," now in its third weekend.
"Strays" was already starting off on the back foot, since R-rated comedies have become one of the toughest genres to succeed with at the box office. Even with the star power of Jennifer Lawrence onboard, Sony's "No Hard Feelings" wrapped its theatrical run with just $86 million worldwide, which might have turned a profit were it not for the movie's $45 million production budget. Adele Lim's "Joy Ride" was made for a more conservative budget of around $20 million,...

Producer Erik Feig could have been describing “SuperBad” or “Good Boys” when he outlined his new movie to Universal, pitching them on backing his mid-budget film with a detailed slideshow that included everything from ideas for TikTok promotions to potential merchandising. “This is a raunchy, cinematic comedy with heart, about finding your people and your purpose,” a slideshow for the Picturestart founder’s new project, “Strays,” read. Except, in this case, there’s a twist. “It just happens to star a pack of dogs.”
It’s getting harder and harder to convince studios to take the plunge when it comes to movies that aren’t based on toys or comic books. That’s something Feig knows all too well, having previously served as the head of Lionsgate’s film division.

We are officially in the last stages of the 2023 Summer Movie Season. A season dominated by one of the biggest toy brands in history and one of the most important human beings to ever live. As those films, Barbie and Oppenheimer, have dominated the charts for the better part of a month, this weekend sees the real test as Warner Bros goes to war with itself as they launch the latest DC film Blue Beetle. So the question is will the latest offering from the Dceu topple Barbie or will it land just shy of the biggest movie of the year?
When tracking for Blue Beetle hit the internet about a month ago, it was looking like an out and out bomb with a predicted $17 million opening. However just a few weeks later those predictions got bumped up to the $30 million range as analysts saw heavy pre-sales within the Latin American community.

In what is poised to be a case of Warner Bros beating itself for the No. 1 spot at the box office this coming weekend, the studio’s new DC superhero title Blue Beetle is poised to halt Barbie‘s three-weekend streak with a $28M-$32M opening. Barbie, meanwhile, is looking at a $22M-$24M fifth weekend, -30%, per industry sources. Through Monday, the Greta Gerwig-directed Mattel doll feature counts $531.2M — the studio’s domestic top-grossing title ever.
As we told you, the Angel Manuel Soto-directed Blue Beetle is overindexing with Latino and Hispanic audiences, hence the hope is that there will be plenty of walk-up business. That was the case with Warners’ The Meg 2: The Trench, which hit a $30M start at the top of its projections two weekends ago. Blue Beetle crawls into 3,850 locations and will play in Imax theaters, which the pic gains in full from Oppenheimer.

No Hard Feelings: Digital, Blu-ray, and DVD details announced for Jennifer Lawrence’s raunchy comedy

According to Sony Pictures, the hilarious and decidedly horny comedy releases on Blu-ray and DVD on August 29, with the Digital release coming next week on August 15. Maddie’s mission is to cure Percy Becker (Andrew Barth Feldman) of his insecurity and turn him into a medalist in the Bedroom Olympics if you catch my drift.
The comedy comes from Gene Stupnitsky, who co-wrote 2011’s Bad Teacher and 2009’s Year One.

Original R-rated comedies are a dying breed in theaters, which is why all eyes were on Jennifer Lawrence's "No Hard Feelings" heading into its release this summer. The film casts the Oscar-winner as Maddie, a woman who tries to solve her financial woes by responding to a Craigslist ad to "date" an unworldly, college-inbound 19-year-old named Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) at the behest of his wealthy, meddling parents (Laura Benanti and Matthew Broderick). What could possibly go wrong?
Directed by Gene Stupnitksky from a script he's credited for writing with John Phillips, "No Hard Feelings" wasn't exactly a hit (it grossed $83.5 million against a $45 million budget). It did, however, fare much better than other recent adult sex comedies at the box office, which is our cue to pour one out for "Bros" and "Joy Ride." Reviews were pretty decent too; /Film's Josh Spiegel gave it a 7 out of 10 in his review,...

The following contains major spoilers for "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem."
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" is a bold new take on the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, one that builds on previous iterations while adding a fresh new look and focusing on things that previous iterations haven't always paid close attention to. For one, this is a movie that truly highlights the teenage aspect of the turtles, giving them each a unique personality that even reflects in their character design.
Granted, unique looks were a big part of "Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," but "Mutant Mayhem" builds on it by also having actual teenagers voice the characters. In a relatively rare move for an animated film, "Mutant Mayhem" also had its young cast record together, which added a sense of camaraderie and youthfulness to the characters that wasn't there before. And, much like Seth Rogen...

The "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" movie arrives in theaters this week. Unlike other iterations of the heroes in a half-shell, the "Mutant Mayhem" part of the title actually delivers in a way that no other "Tmnt" movie has before.
Previous "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movies have mostly focused on Shredder as the primary villain. But the sequel "Secret of the Ooze" introduced mutant baddies Tokka and Rahzar, and the more recent live-action/CGI hybrids produced by Michael Bay brought villains Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady into the fray as well. However, "Mutant Mayhem" features a cavalcade of mutant characters previously only seen in the "Tmnt" animated series and comics, and they're all voiced by some recognizable voices that you might have a hard time placing. That's why we've got a helpful "Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem" character guide, so you have the answer ready when your grandma asks, "Who was the voice of Mondo Gecko?...

Thanks to the nature of the medium, actors in animation don't have to be in the same room together to share a scene. In most productions, actors' voices are recorded and edited ahead of time, and the animators add their physical acting after the fact. It's typically more common for animated productions to record each of their actors separately, then edit together a vocal track before the animation begins. Indeed, if one has ever seen a behind-the-scenes video of voice actors in a booth, one might see how recording lines can become very tedious as actors will have to repeat single lines over and over again until the director hears a take they like. It's quite rare for actors to play out entire scenes the way they appear in a final animated product.

Molly Gordon on Making Directorial Debut ‘Theater Camp’ and Reuniting With Ayo Edebiri on ‘The Bear’
This interview was conducted before SAG-AFTRA authorized a strike on July 13.
In 2019, Molly Gordon worked for three days on Ramy, the Hulu show about a man exploring his faith in New York City, and it changed her life. She was 23, in the nascent stages of a career she had been dreaming about since childhood. That year, she had roles in Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart and Gene Stupnitsky’s Good Boys, but her time on set with creator Ramy Youssef and executive producer Chris Storer served as what she describes as a “turning point” creatively.
This summer, she marked another professional milestone with the July 14 release of Theater Camp, her screenwriting and directorial debut, which she had been working on for years with longtime friends Ben Platt, Noah Galvin and Nick Lieberman. Gordon also stars in the mockumentary-style comedy about an eccentric group of artists working to save their summer camp for kids from financial ruin.

“The Flash” continues to stumble at the box office, collecting $26.6 million from 78 international territories over the weekend and bringing its overseas tally to just $123.3 million.
The Warner Bros. comic book movie, starring Ezra Miller as the eponymous, timeline-spanning speedster, has grossed $210.9 million globally, including a lousy $87 million at the domestic box office. It’s far less than what a film of its size and scope — it cost $200 million to make and another $100 million to market — needs to break even in its theatrical run. China is leading the foreign territories with a lackluster $23.6 million, followed by Mexico with $14.4 million and the United Kingdom with $8.5 million.
Word-of-mouth isn’t helping “The Flash,” which is suffering in part because it’s considered a leftover from a soon-to-be defunct comic book universe. DC Studios’ new leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran plan to retool the interconnected world of Justice League members, and as a result,...

Working as a break between blockbusters, this weekend featured no huge tent pole releases. That is good news and bad news for the movies that were released last weekend as it looks like Pixar’s Elemental and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse are battling it out for first place this weekend with an expected $18 million each. For Elemental that is welcome news after last weeks opening which saw the film become the second lowest opening ever for a Pixar movie If Elemental can hold on at its current pace, that will represent a sub 40% drop off which is really good in today’s opening weekend dominated market.
The bad news comes by way of The Flash as that film looks to take a substantial tumble in its second weekend which could lose as much as 75% of its audience with a $14 million weekend. I saw in the comments on our predictions post...

Jennifer Lawrence’s much-discussed return to studio star vehicles, in a film being pitched as a canary in the coal mine for the theatrical strength of star-driven comedies, got off to a promising start as Sony’s “No Hard Feelings” earned $2.15 million in Thursday previews.
Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” meanwhile, expanded into 1,675 theaters with $1.1 million for Focus Features. That’s after shattering records for a per-theater-average for a six-screen (or more) release last weekend.
Both results mark good news for non-tentpole films from studios that would love to depend on more than just franchise flicks.
“No Hard Feelings” stars Lawrence as a down-on-her-luck woman who takes a gig to “date” an introverted 19-year-old so that the kid can sow some oats — or at least come out of his shell before college.

Jennifer Lawrence’s new R-rated comedy, “No Hard Feelings,” hits theaters this weekend and made $2.15 million in previews at the box office.
The raunchy comedy from Sony is predicted to open with a soft $12 million in its opening weekend, which may not bode well considering its $45 million budget. It’s been a tough time for R-rated comedies at the box office lately, with the once profitable genre nearly going extinct. Besides this year’s “Cocaine Bear,” which made $87 million worldwide, the last few comedies, like Sony and Bert Kreischer’s “The Machine,” Billy Eichner’s “Bros,” Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert De Niro’s “About My Father” and Jo Koy’s “Easter Sunday,” haven’t not found much box office success.

Plot: Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence) must pay back taxes on her home, but as a ride-share driver, her livelihood is taken away from her when her car is repossessed. Thus, she answers an unusual ad, where a wealthy couple (Matthew Broderick and Laura Benanti) offers a car to anyone willing to “date” their shy son Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman), who they want to come out of his shell.
Review: No Hard Feelings is half of a good, old-fashioned, raunchy sex comedy. It’s unapologetic about its premise where Jennifer Lawrence’s Maddie is happy to deflower the virginal Percy for a free car. Still, as a concession to how controversial the premise is proving to be, it piles on the sap in the film’s second half. Nevertheless, it has some really funny moments and an outstanding performance by Lawrence, who has real comic chops.

When the trailer for Gene Stupnitksy’s No Hard Feelings made the rounds online, it felt like a mild event. Not only for a return to big theatrical releases for star Jennifer Lawrence, but also a return of the big-budget, theatrically released sex comedy, a genre that has been mostly relegated to streaming. It was great to see one of the few remaining stars who can draw an audience throw her considerable influence behind a straight-up comedy.
But for No Hard Feelings to salvage comedy it must actually be funny. And overall it is. Lawrence plays Maddie, a 32-year-old Uber driver whose car is repossessed for her failure to pay property tax. She answers a Craigslist ad that offers to trade a Buick as payment for “dating” the owner’s sheltered son, Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman). Gene Stupnitsky’s 2019 feature-length debut, Good Boys, set out to reinvent the coming-of-age comedy, and it figured that the best way to do so was to have the filthiest words imaginable fall from the mouths of its pre-teen characters. His follow-up, No Hard Feelings, takes a similarly unimaginative approach to the romantic comedy, which in this case translates to juicing up bog-standard material with raunch, profanity, and violence.
Most of the film’s shocks involve Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence) in one way or another, and they include watching the Montauk native catch fire, get maced and punched in the throat, and beat up a trio of troublesome teens while buck naked. Through it all, you never doubt that Lawrence is game for anything, but this willingness to go all-in has been wasted on gross-out gags that are more often than not cringey and desperate in their calculation than funny or transgressive.

In a saner world, we would have already had a dozen Jennifer Lawrence comedies.
When aliens arrive they will surely go directly to IMDb to survey her filmography and wonder why one of Hollywood’s funniest and most naturally charismatic stars spent the first decade of her career in dystopias, action movies and whatever it is you call “Mother!”
As if to make up for lost time, Lawrence has in “No Hard Feelings” made the kind of R-rated teen comedy that has usually launched young actors. She plays a 32-year-old Montauk Uber driver who, desperate for money after her car is towed, is hired by the wealthy parents of a timid and sheltered 19-year-old (newcomer Andrew Barth Feldman) to take his virginity before he heads off to Princeton.

Can an R-rated comedy that draws big laughs still bring in outsized ticket sales at the box office?
Jennifer Lawrence’s “No Hard Feelings” will put that question to the test as the raunchy funny film opens over the weekend in 3,000 North American theaters, where it’s expected to earn a tepid $12 million in its debut.
That’s not a terrible result at a time in which theatrical comedies, especially of the R-rated variety, have become something of endangered species. But it also wouldn’t be a great start considering its star power, $45 million budget and prime June release date. Earlier this year, Universal’s wild R-rated “Cocaine Bear” opened to $23.2 million — and (with all due respect to the drugged-up grizzly) that film wasn’t headlined by one of the biggest names in Hollywood.

After her return to the world of character-driven indie cinema last year with the drama “Causeway,” which she also produced, it seemed Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence had found her way back to the kind of grounded cinema on which she cut her teeth. Yet her latest film as star-producer, “No Hard Feelings,” directed by Gene Stupnitsky, is about as hard a pivot as is cinematically possible.

What starts out looking like it wants to be a gross-out comedy in the Porky’s vein eventually, and more gratifyingly, heads closer to The Graduate territory in No Hard Feelings.
It seems like quite a while since we’ve seen an apparent sex-on-the-brain romp that actually has a bit more on its mind than just pushing the boundaries of vulgarity and gross-out comedy. But while director and co-writer Gene Stupnitsky, who worked on 66 episodes of The Office and numerous other shows, is only sporadically successful at having things both ways, the film nonetheless shows talent both in generating some good laughs and in addressing serious aspects of life that eventually must be faced. Jennifer Lawrence, who also is a producer here, hits the mark as a thirty-ish woman whose great looks and popularity have seemingly delayed her full transition from hot young thing into responsible adulthood.

This age-gap story – Lawrence has to seduce a teenage virgin boy to get a free car – refuses to make bought sex anything resembling an issue
Comedy, like sex work, is real work and both can have a tough time gaining acceptance in the respectable world, so it’s a pleasure to find a comedy about bought sex that’s pretty funny – and funnier than the pun in the title might suggest. Gene Stupnitsky co-wrote and directed the amusing bad-taste romp Good Boys, and now he gives us another age-gap comedy about a very unsentimental education.
The scene is Montauk in New York state, famously the location for TV series The Affair. Jennifer Lawrence plays Maddie, a woman in her early 30s who has been unlucky in love, who still lives in her childhood home, all alone since the death of her mother and not much idea about what to do with her life.
