Nifty retrospective documentary
Woodyanders2 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This enjoyable and informative 43-minute retrospective documentary on "Ghost World" features engrossing and illuminating interviews with actresses Thora Birch, Illeana Douglas, and Scarlett Johansson. Birch reveals that she was initially approached to play Rebecca, but was so taken with the character of Enid that she insisted on portraying Enid instead. Johansson admits that Birch was a bit hard to get to know because she put on a tough front from having been in show business since she was a kid. Douglas decided to make Roberta a broken and damaged failed performance artist from the 1980's underground scene and even came up with the idea to have Roberta sit on a desk at one point. Birch aptly describes "Ghost World" as a coming of age movie in reverse -- Enid doesn't want to grow up -- and Douglas confesses that she prefers ambiguous endings over happy ones. Among the other subjects which are addressed are how Enid has been embraced by disenfranchised young women as a role model, Seymour and Enid being kindred spirits, and how everyone was excited to work with director Terry Zsigoff after seeing his unique documentary "Crumb." Recommended viewing for fans of the film.
