This brisk romp doesn’t outstay its welcome, with Brosnan as a hitman and Godfather star James Caan in his last screen appearance
Back in the early 90s, the emergence of Quentin Tarantino sparked a mini-boom in crime thrillers, some good (Natural Born Killers), some less so (The Boondock Saints). Based on the novel Gun Monkeys, this new Pierce Brosnan vehicle is a throwback to that era in almost every way possible – and that’s largely at the root of what’s both good and bad about it.
We open with a flash-forward to a motor-vehicle graveyard in Florida where Brosnan, Aka hitman Charlie Swift, is hanging about looking shifty. An unseen antagonist orders him to put his hands in the air and take his shirt off. He complies, and then voiceover from Brosnan essentially follows the format of the record scratch meme. You’ll spend the next 90 minutes finding out,...

If you were to design a global sales agent in a lab, they would come out looking a lot like Tamara Birkemoe.
Born in Italy to Chilean parents and raised between Sweden and Rome before moving to the U.S. for film school, the multilingual exec has been a force on the indie film scene since her first job, straight out of UCLA, for Mark Damon’s Mdp Worldwide. For the next 16 years, Birkemoe put in time at Mdp (later Media 8 Entertainment) and then at Foresight Unlimited, the production and sales group Damon set up in 2005. The slate she oversaw ranged from studio-released big-budget action fare, such as Peter Berg’s Lone Survivor and Baltasar Kormákur’s 2 Guns, both Universal Pictures films, which grossed $155 million and $132 million worldwide, respectively; to Kevin Costner starrer The Upside of Anger, a New Line release that earned $28 million worldwide; and Patty Jenkins’ low-budget true-crime drama Monster,...

Exclusive: Morena Baccarin (Deadpool franchise) is set to appear in an upcoming episode of CBS’ Fire Country, playing a sheriff character that could lead her own series. Baccarin will guest star in the Season 2 episode with an option to become a series regular in a potential spinoff series, Deadline has learned. Like the mothership series, the proposed offshoot would be produced by CBS Studios.
Fire Country stars Max Thieriot as a young convict seeking redemption and a shortened prison sentence by joining a prison release firefighting program in his rural Northern California hometown of Edgewater.
In the planted spinoff episode, which will air later in the season, Baccarin will play Mickey, a Sheriff’s Deputy for fifteen years who knows every corner of Edgewater … and every one of its inhabitants. This is her town and she’s fiercely protective of it.

The PVOD debuts of “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Leave the World Behind,” high-profile movies adapted from adult-oriented bestsellers, are currently #1 on their respective platforms. Martin Scorsese’s film tops all PVOD charts, and the timely Long Island-set thriller co-produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground is #1 at Netflix.
Both films dislodged high-powered #1 titles. “Oppenheimer,” released four months after its theatrical run began, enjoyed two weeks in the top PVOD slot. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the year’s #2 movie (behind “Barbie” and just ahead of Christopher Nolan’s historical epic) managed five days in the lead at Netflix after previous play, which included streaming on Peacock.
“Flower Moon” and “Leave the World Behind” each reflect the state of film platforming. Apple produced “Flower Moon” with Paramount handling theatrical distribution. It had a 46-day window before debuting on revenue-rich PVOD. At $19.99, Apple gets the lion’s share of rentals.

Some films begin with a grander idea than one they can actually execute. For a film, it’s good to have a grand concept, no doubt, but it’s better when the film knows that it doesn’t and begins from an honest space. Fast Charlie, the 2023 Pierce Brosnan film, never tries to become ‘bigger,’ a ‘spectacle,’ and therein lies its strength. With some clever writing from Richard Wenk and Victor Gischler, Fast Charlie benefits from Brosnan’s on-screen persona and Morena Baccarin’s turn as a high-iq taxidermist who just knows how to calmly deal with the criminal world if ever it comes too close to destroying her own. There is James ‘Jimmy’ Caan in a short but emotionally powerful role as well, and he plays his bit well in the penultimate film of his career. Through some engaging twists and turns, the film becomes a refreshing action thriller...

One of the great things about working for JoBlo is that, over the years, I’ve had the pleasure to speak with some of my heroes. Being a child of the eighties, I tend to be most fascinated by the people I grew up watching. So, speaking to Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson and the great Don Johnson have consistently ranked with my fondest moments here with the site. Of course, one of the guys I’ve always wanted to talk to was the great Pierce Brosnan.
Given that I’m the guy behind James Bond Revisited, one could easily imagine why he was a bucket list interview of mine. However, beyond his work as 007, I’m still a fan, particularly of his movie The Matador, one of my favorites. Pierce has a new film out the week called Fast Charlie, which features him once again playing a hitman who’s...

The short and shaggy tale of an aging hitman (Pierce Brosnan) who realizes it’s time to either get out of the game or die trying, Phillip Noyce’s “Fast Charlie” is the kind of movie you’ve seen a thousand times before. It was adapted from the 2003 Victor Gischler novel “Gun Monkeys,” which is the kind of book you’ve read a thousand times before. And yet, the difference here — the most crucial reason why this particular version of that well-weathered story is weirdly charming instead of trite — is that Noyce’s film treats its ultra-familiar tropes as more of a feature than a bug. They’re the lingua franca of a Southern-fried thriller set in the clogged drain at the bottom of the criminal underworld; a place that everybody talks about leaving, but nobody ever seems to escape. Not while they’re still breathing, anyway.

Pierce Brosnan hasn’t returned to his James Bond roots, but he’s definitely channeling 007 in the trailer for “Fast Charlie,” the crime thriller that’s also notable for featuring actor James Caan’s final performance.
Brosnan plays Charlie Swift, a contract killer with a serious on-the-job headache: The victim of his most recent assassination is missing his head. That’s a problem if Swift wants to prove the job was done and get paid for it, and more importantly keep the man who hired him — a ruthless New Orleans gangster — happy.
“I have to convince a certain person that the body in that trunk out there is indeed Rolo,” Swift states.

In the upcoming musical romantic comedy “That’s Amore!,” audiences will have their chance to see John Travolta doing what so many of his fans love to see him doing — singing and dancing with a smile on his face.
The star’s enduring popularity certainly isn’t lost on writer-director Nick Vallelonga, who won two Oscars for writing and producing the 2018 hit “Green Book,” and is thrilled to be finally getting the film off the ground. “I’m constantly writing and developing scripts, and I’ve always had Travolta in mind for the role. I got to work with John on a George Gallo film [“The Poison Rose”] and I was his stand-in for a week on ‘Staying Alive,’ so I’ve always been a big fan of his work. He just makes you happy when you see him on screen, and I’ve always dreamed of making this movie with him.

One sign of a terrific actor is that he can hold you even when he’s not doing anything. Pierce Brosnan is like that. I wouldn’t call him a minimalist, though he never wastes a word or a movement; he has the precision of an expensive watch. Yet as he’s gotten older, his inner quality of elegant puckish cutthroat gravitas has only grown stronger. You’re hooked by him when he’s not doing anything in part because he projects the unwavering confidence that you will be.
That makes him the ideal actor to play a seen-it-all hit man — who also happens to be a highly civilized gourmet cook — in Phillip Noyce’s “Fast Charlie,” a Deep South crime drama that may be the twelfth movie this year to center on a hit man. But the new hit-man movies, like David Fincher’s “The Killer” and Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,...

SAG-AFTRA has told its members that they can’t work on hitman thriller Fast Charlie because the film’s producers are “in default of the SAG-AFTRA agreement for independent producers of theatrical motion pictures.” Directed by Phillip Noyce, the film stars Pierce Brosnan and James Caan in his final film role. Caan died in July.
The guild’s “Do Not Work Notice” is unusual in that the film already has wrapped production in New Orleans, though it still might be doing post-production voice-over work or looping, which SAG-AFTRA members now are prohibited from doing. Fast Charlie is slated to be released this year via Screen Media.
“SAG-AFTRA members are hereby instructed to withhold any acting services or performance of any covered work for this production until further notice from the union,” SAG-AFTRA told members. “Please note, accepting employment or rendering services on Fast Charlie may be considered a violation of Global Rule One.
