Robert Downey Jr.’s career has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The Oppenheimer star has seen it all – the highs and the lows. From his early rise to fame, that was stunted by a crippling drug addiction and was at once threatened to stunt his career as well. But he bounced back in style. Since then, there has been no turning back for him. And he’s played numerous interesting roles. But on the top of his list would be a series which saw him take on the mantle of playing 4 roles.

It’s not news that Robert Downey Jr.’s iconic character Tony Stark is widely considered one of the most powerful and, well, egoistic characters in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While his extraordinary smarts are what set him apart from every other superhero, the lifestyle he leads and the personality he sports — especially at the beginning of his tenure — further contributed to it.

However, while he manages to turn into a softie in the later events of his story arc in the Cinematic Universe, especially around Peter Parker aka Spider-Man, he does set his ego aside for one other Marvel character as well.
In fact, not only this but on closer observation, one would realize that he actually even breaks his rule for this very character too: Howard Stark, i.e. Tony’s dad.

Of all the titles credited to Robert Downey Jr.’s name to date, perhaps the one that perfectly aligns with his real-life personality is that of Tony Stark in his Iron Man saga. But while that is still regarded as one of his best performances to date despite him last playing it almost half a decade ago, his iconic portrayal of the fan-favorite character wouldn’t have been possible due to one movie.

This one movie was none other than his 2005 masterpiece Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which pretty much brought his career back on track. But his success through the film wasn’t the only thing that made Downey Jr.’s superhero debut possible, because what seems to have further added to his star-studded portrayal of Stark must have been the genius performance by Val Kilmer in the 2005 film!

With Robert Downey Jr. finally winning an Oscar for Oppenheimer and co-starring in the acclaimed HBO miniseries The Sympathizer, Awfully Good Movies is looking back at Rdj’s first and failed attempt at a post-Marvel franchise in the failed family fantasy Dolittle!
Right after Tony Stark’s epic exit from the MCU, Downey hopped on to star in and co-produce alongside his wife Susan a new adaptation of Hugh Lofting’s children’s book series about the veterinarian who can talk all the languages of his animal patients, this time without any overlong musical numbers from Rex Harrison or silly mugging from Eddie Murphy. Imagine your past dark moments in life being used as a joke in front of thousands of people while you sit in the audience unable to do anything.
That’s exactly what happened last month March 10 at the 2024 Oscars which took place at Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
At the 96th Academy Awards, the host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Jimmy Kimmel had the honor to host the event but during his opening monologue, Jimmy dropped some very uncomfortable comments about the “Iron Man” Robert Downey Junior’s well-known substance abuse past.
While the actor who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his outstanding performance as Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer” didn’t say anything concerning Jimmy’s jokes, he finally broke his silence in a recent interview with “Esquire” published April 8.
It turns out that although Robert looked uncomfortable at the Oscars during Jimmy’s jokes, he didn’t take it to heart.

Marvel is witnessing how big of a hole Robert Downey Jr. left in the MCU when his character heroically died in Avengers: Endgame. Most of the projects post-Endgame show a declining trend in audience interest in the films.
While this is a universal trend across Cbm films now, returning superheroes notably get a more positive reception. Fans have been suggesting that Marvel bring back Downey Jr. as Iron Man for the same reason.

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

On an episode of Rob Lowe’s Literally! podcast yesterday, Downey was speaking about his flop 2020 film Dolittle, which he filmed after leaving the “cocoon of Marvel.”
“I felt so exposed after being in the cocoon of Marvel where I think I did some of the best work I will ever do, but it went a little bit unnoticed because of the genre,” Downey told Lowe, his friend since high school.

Casting Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in Iron Man was one of the riskiest moves imaginable. A legal liability and far from being a box office catch, it made no sense to name him the lead of a $140 million production. Until, of course, it did, with the movie launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe into what is now a $30 billion worldwide franchise. And while rumors began swirling that Marvel would try to reunite The Avengers, it seems as if the superhero himself is officially done with the character.
In a new profile on Robert Downey Jr. by Vanity Fair, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said the resurrection of Tony Stark / Iron Man – who died in Avengers: Endgame – is off the table. “We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again…We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never...

Just when she thought she was out, someone could pull her back in…maybe. Gwyneth Paltrow revealed during a recent Entertainment Tonight interview (via Entertainment Weekly) that, while she’s not keen on returning to screens any time soon, there’s one A-lister who could convince the Goop CEO and Oscar winner to act again: her pal Robert Downey Jr.
“It would be very hard for me to do any acting right at the moment, just because of my job,” said Paltrow, who’s plenty busy launching a more accessible fleet of her A-class Goop products at Target and Amazon. “But, I guess Robert Downey Jr. could probably always get me back.”
She added, laughing, “You know, to some degree.”
Paltrow has already said she’s long done with Marvel and playing “Iron Man” favorite Pepper Potts, revealing on the “Goop Podcast” when asked by Scarlett Johansson if she was finished with the franchise,...

After the fall of Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios was hoping a few MCU alum would replace Robert Downey Jr.'s leadership position.
Since Robert Downey Jr. departed from Marvel, he starred in Dolittle, which wasn't received well, and Oppenheimer, which some say is his best performance. The actor has even admitted that it's "the best film [he's] ever been in."
Meanwhile, Marvel Studios has been pushing ahead with its Multiverse Saga, which has received mixed reviews through all of Phase 4 and is off to a slow start in Phase 5 with Disney+'s Secret Invasion.

Robert Downey Jr. ended his Marvel run on a high note with Avengers Endgame. Afterwards, the actor was excited to jump into another potential franchise. But it was a mistake he later felt he learned a valuable lesson from.

When Downey parted ways with the Marvel universe, the actor set out to explore his career in a way he previously couldn’t. He figured the 2020 movie Dolittle would mark a new chapter in his professional life. Similar to Eddie Murphy’s Dr. Dolittle, Downey’s movie would focus on a doctor who could speak to animals. Except Downey’s version would be more faithful to its source material.
In an interview with Extra, he explained he somewhat felt fated to do the movie thanks to all of the signs around him.

Robert Downey Jr. was concerned he played Iron Man for too long. The 58-year-old actor portrayed Tony Stark and his superhero alter ego in 11 movies from 2008's 'Iron Man' to 2019's 'Avengers: Endgame' and he admitted he had reservations that playing the same character for such a long period could have affected his acting range.Asked if he had concerns that playing the same role for so long would have an impact on his acting, he told the New York Times magazine: "Yes. A hundred percent, and I knew there was a point where Chris Nolan was endorsing, let’s work those other muscles, but let’s do it while rendering you devoid of your usual go-to things."It’s the fast-talking, charming, unpredictable, blah, blah, blah, or as my very close friend Josh Richman, a character actor, used to say, I made my bones playing 'Milo,...

After more than a decade with Marvel, Robert Downey Jr. is calling “Oppenheimer” his career-best film.
During the “Oppenheimer” U.K. premiere, Downey described the Christopher Nolan period piece as his “best film” to date.
“Just going to flat out say it: This is the best film I’ve ever been in,” the “Iron Man” star said, “and I cannot wait for you all to experience it.”
Notably, after walking the red carpet outside the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square theater in London, the cast left the “Oppenheimer” premiere before the movie began screening due to the official announcement of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which bars SAG actors from participating in any promotional activities.
Downey recently told The New York Times that he was “a hundred percent” concerned about acting outside of the MCU. “You start to wonder if a muscle you have hasn’t atrophied,” Downey said. Downey further credited...

Matt Damon is opening up about having to power through productions knowing a film isn’t good.
The “Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Oppenheimer” actor revealed during an episode of YouTube series “Jake’s Takes” that he fell into a “depression” while filming a movie he saw heading for disaster.
“Without naming any particular movies…sometimes you find yourself in a movie that you know, perhaps, might not be what you had hoped it would be, and you’re still making it,” Damon said. “And I remember halfway through production and you’ve still got months to go and you’ve taken your family somewhere, you know, and you’ve inconvenienced them, and I remember my wife [Luciana Barroso] pulling me up because I fell into a depression about like, what have I done?”

When “Avengers: Endgame” was released in 2019, Robert Downey, Jr. was the King of Hollywood. The film seemed like a celebration of his 10+ years working for Marvel Studios and becoming one of the biggest (and most well-paid) stars on the planet. Not only that, the film broke all sorts of records and cemented his legacy in the minds of film fans around the world. But his movie star armor suffered a major blow with the release of his next film, “Dolittle,” which not only had terrible reviews but was a massive box office failure.

Los Angeles, July 11 (Ians) ‘Iron Man’ actor Robert Downey Jr. spoke of his film ‘Dolittle’ and opened up about it flopping at the box office.
In a new interview with The New York Times Magazine, the actor said that he had reservations about the movie before it even flopped.
According to People magazine, the actor said: “I had some reservations. Me and my team seemed a little too excited about the deal and not quite excited enough about the merits of the execution. But at that point I was bulletproof. I was the guru of all genre movies.”
Reflecting on the movie’s failure at the box office, he said: “I finished the Marvel contract and then hastily went into what had all the promise of being another big, fun, well-executed potential franchise in ‘Dolittle’.”

Few actors have enjoyed as much success as Robert Downey Jr. in the last 15 years. The unofficial leader of the Marvel Cinematic Universe played Tony Stark in numerous blockbusters and helped turn the franchise into the one of the most lucrative in the history of Hollywood. But ask Downey if “Iron Man” or “Avengers: Endgame” were the “most important films” he’s made in the last two decades, and the two-time Oscar nominee will say no.
Speaking to the New York Times, Downey said the two projects he’d point to as having an outsized impact on this stage of his career are a pair of poorly reviewed kids’ movies: 2006’s “The Shaggy Dog” and 2020’s flop “Dolittle.”

Robert Downey Jr. is reflecting on his film career and, the films he considers most prominent may come as a surprise.

On paper, Dolittle must have felt like a sure thing. When thinking of the most important movie in Robert Downey Jr.’s filmography over the last 25 years, one might naturally assume the answer is “Iron Man,” the 2008 superhero tentpole that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe and changed the blockbuster landscape in Hollywood. But that’s not the movie Downey Jr. himself would pick. The rights for the late filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 cult classic psychological thriller ‘Vertigo’ have been secured by Paramount Pictures. ‘Iron Man’ star Robert Downey Jr is reportedly in the talks for playing the lead. The actor is producing the project with his wife Susan Downey through their Team Downey production company, along with John Davis and John Fox via Davis Entertainment, reports Variety.
‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight is set to write the script, hot on the heels of his commitment to write an untitled ‘Star Wars’ movie for Lucasfilm, as Variety reported on Wednesday.
Downey has kept a low profile as an actor since the release of 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which is one of the highest grossing movies ever made, and 2020’s ‘Dolittle’. He produced and appeared in the documentary ‘Sr.,’ about his father, and he’s next set to appear this July in Christopher Nolan’s historical epic ‘Oppenheimer’ opposite Cillian Murphy.

For those of us who grew up with comedian and actor Eddie Murphy, our first exposure to this gifted entertainer was on Saturday Night Live’s “Mister Robinson’s Neighborhood“.
For decades now, Murphy has always been there, whether on TV or in the movies, and continues to have loyal, diehard fans who grew up in the 80’s to his hilarious standups “Delirious” and “Raw”, as well as his pop single “Party All The Time”.
Personally, while my siblings and I were in high school, after moving cross country from Connecticut to Idaho, Murphy saved us as we listened repeatedly to the cassette of Delirious in 1984. He had us laughing and made us forget our feelings of being the “new kids” in a new town at a new school.

There's something liberating about watching an actor who's spent years working almost exclusively on a single major franchise take advantage of all the clout they've amassed to go off and tackle whatever wild role or bizarre project strikes their fancy. (Call it pulling a Daniel Radcliffe.) It seems Robert Downey Jr. was similarly eager to get his weird on after bidding adieu to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 2019's "Avengers: Endgame." His first post-"Endgame" film, "Dolittle," was more ill-conceived than inspired, but after more than a decade of shooting countless heads-up display (Hud) shots and acting against green screens, perhaps Downey just needed to let off some steam by extracting a pair of bagpipes from a dragon's nether regions.
Be that the case or not, he's since worked on Chris Smith's acclaimed documentary about Downey's father, "Sr.," snagged a key role in Christopher Nolan's much-hyped historical drama "Oppenheimer,...

Hubert G. Wells, a longtime Hollywood animal trainer whose many credits include the original Doctor Dolittle, Out of Africa, Babe: Pig in the City and, in 1970, the bizarre kids tv series Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp, died Dec. 25 of natural causes at his home in Thousand Oaks, California. He was 88.
His death was announced on social media by friends and animal training colleagues.
Born in Hungary, Hubert Geza Wells defected to the West following Russia’s crushing of the Hungarian Uprising in 1956.
“Eight years later I moved to California with my Indian leopard and golden pointer,” Wells, the author of the 2017 memoir Lights, Camera, Lions, wrote, referring to the dog-and-leopard show he staged on the East Coast. “A job awaited us, a two-part T.V. show for the Disney Studios. In the following years my animals and, at times, myself as a stunt double, appeared in over 150 films, T.V. shows and commercials.

A posthumous portrait of the life of underground filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. is headed to Netflix next month, over a year after the director, writer, and actor passed away at the age of 85. The black-and-white documentary "Sr." is directed by "American Movie" filmmaker Chris Smith, but it's also clearly made with love by his son, actor Robert Downey Jr. The younger Downey produced the film and appears on-screen alongside his dad, asking him questions about his life, his work, and the pair's own relationship.
"Sr." debuted on the festival circuit this fall, but its first trailer has just arrived. Based on this preview alone, "Sr." looks both poignant and irreverent; it's clearly colored by Downey Jr.'s signature wittiness, but not overwhelmed by it. Instead, it seems to open up the floor to the elderly Downey patriarch, letting him answer questions about his career making movies like "Putney Swope" and "Greaser's Palace" while movie clips,...
