After just three short weekends in theaters, Universal Pictures is pretty much pulling the plug on "The Fall Guy." The studio has announced that director David Leitch's action/comedy is available to stream on VOD as of today. Indeed, the summer blockbuster starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt can now be watched from the comfort of home, effectively kneecapping its run at the box office. For those who didn't feel the need to rush out to a theater for this one, that might be welcome news. For just about everyone else? It's a sign of a much bigger problem Hollywood must contend with.
"The Fall Guy" made $8.35 million in its third weekend, coming at number four on the charts behind "The Strangers: Chapter 1" ($11.8 million), "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" ($25.4 million), and "If" ($33.7 million). Leitch's adaptation of the '80s TV show has now made $62.8 million domestically...

Like the hair of a Chia pet Troll doll, the "Trolls" franchise seems to never stop growing. The glittery DreamWorks reimagining of Thomas Dam's ugly-cute collectibles kicked off in 2016 with the music-filled animated adventure movie "Trolls." Since then, the movie has spawned two sequels, two holiday specials, two TV shows, a series of short films, and countless toys and tie-ins. It's also picked up an Oscar nomination (for Justin Timberlake's song "Can't Stop the Feeling!") and a cool $600 million at the box office (per Box Office Mojo) despite one of its three installments debuting during pandemic lockdown.
The "Trolls" movies are successful, but they aren't exactly the most coherent kids' movie franchise around. If you're anything like me, you've likely caught bits and pieces of several movies, potentially out of order, when the little ones in your life decided to watch (and rewatch ... and rewatch) them. “Wonka” (Warner Bros.) achieved something that the much bigger “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” didn’t. With the #1 spot again this week on VOD top 10s of iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, it becomes the first film to do this since “Avatar: The Way of Water” last year.
It didn’t come without a challenge. “The Iron Claw” (A24), like the Roald Dahl-inspired musical priced at $19.99 (though to buy; “Wonka” remains rental only) when released on Tuesday, held the #1 spot at iTunes for five days before dropping down. It’s #2 as well at Vudu, with the always lagging Google Play showing it at #5.
Netflix saw a similarly close battle, with the original rom-com “Players” debuting on Valentine’s Day leading leading their top 10 for four days until Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving,” the latest Sony release to initially stream on the platform, debuted. The Gina Rodriguez/Damon Wayans Jr. film was directed by Trish Sie.

The Trolls are coming home for their latest adventure. Universal Pictures has announced that "Trolls Band Together" will soon be available to stream on Peacock, meaning it will be readily available to watch from the comfort of one's couch. But for those who don't have Peacock, there are fortunately several options available to those who want to watch the third entry in the hit DreamWorks franchise based on the popular toys.
"Trolls Band Together" will be available on Peacock beginning Friday, March 15, and there will be a sing-along version hitting the streaming service at the same time. Those who want to watch Nsync reunite sooner (or simply don't want to subscribe to another streaming service) can rent or purchase the movie digitally now through their digital retailer of choice. One Christmas Warner Bros. release replaced another this week with “Wonka” taking over as #1 from “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on all VOD charts. However, other late-year releases including “Migration,” “Wish,” and “The Marvels” aren’t having the same luck. While theatrical is the premium marketing tool for home viewing, we’re seeing that it doesn’t always translate to chart placement.
Universal’s “Migration” is weaker than past animated releases, currently #4 at Vudu (which tallies by revenue). Disney’s “Wish,” also in week two, placed only on two charts. In its third week, “The Marvels” only placed on Vudu and is #20 at Apple TV. “Ferrari” (Neon) and “The Color Purple” (Warner Bros.) are gone after one week. “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM) managed just one week on the charts.
“The Beekeeper” (Amazon MGM), which is still performing well in theaters (#3 this weekend), is available at home after 18 days.

Acclaimed filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki earned his first Golden Globe Award nomination on the strength of his semi-autobiographical fantasy film The Boy and the Heron, capping a big week for the film that this weekend opened to a record-breaking $12.8 million, becoming the first original anime title in history to top the North American box office.
The Boy and the Heron was nominated for the animated feature Golden Globe alongside Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Elemental, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Suzume and Wish. Both The Boy and the Heron and Spider-Verse received additional nominations for original motion picture score.
A year after Netflix won the animated feature Golden Globe for the first time, for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, the streamer was shut of out this year’s race despite a slate of contenders that included Nimona, the fantasy based on the graphic novel by Nd Stevenson; Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget...

“Trolls Band Together,” the third chapter in the DreamWorks Animation franchise, gets psychedelic with the introduction of new worlds and characters, helped along by some trippy 2D animation from Titmouse. It’s a musical tribute to ’90s boy bands, fittingly enough, as Justin Timberlake’s Branch reunites with his long-lost brothers (known as the family band BroZone): Floyd (Troye Sivan), John Dory (Eric André), Spruce (Daveed Diggs), and Clay (Kid Cudi).
But Floyd is kidnapped by pop-star siblings Velvet (Amy Schumer) and Veneer (Andrew Rannells) as part of their nefarious musical scheme.
“With Justin and boy bands as part of the DNA of the Troll universe, it felt like a natural extension, and also, musically and visually, it’s more psychedelic,” director Walt Dohrn (“Trolls World Tour”) told IndieWire. “If you can see my room, I live in a kaleidoscopic, Technicolor, psychedelic world. It was bad enough for “The Marvels” to suffer a Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise low $46.1 million opening amidst fan reception that was mildly positive at best. It’s likely to get worse this weekend as a slew of pre-Thanksgiving newcomers, led by the return of “The Hunger Games,” will peel away much of the lingering interest in the new Marvel film among casual moviegoers.
Likely to take No.1 will be Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” a prequel to the YA novel series that Lionsgate turned into four films in the early 2010s that still remain the highest-grossing in studio history.
Other films arriving this weekend include Universal/DreamWorks’ “Trolls Band Together,” Searchlight’s “Next Goal Wins,” and Sony/TriStar’s tongue-in-cheek slasher film “Thanksgiving.”
Given its setting before the events of the “Hunger Games” trilogy, which means no Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes...

“Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” is expected to emerge victorious in this weekend’s box office battle royale.
It’s competing against two fellow newcomers, Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s threequel “Trolls Band Together” and Sony’s gory thriller “Thanksgiving,” in this crowded pre-Turkey Day corridor. Despite the stacked race, all three films could work as counter-programming against each other and carve out solid box office receipts. That may not be the case for last weekend’s champion, Disney’s $220 million budgeted superhero sequel “The Marvels.” After a disappointing $47 million debut, the comic book tentpole is bracing for a 50-55% drop, which puts ticket sales around $21 million to $23 million in its sophomore outing.
With a lackluster turnout expected for “The Marvels,” “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” will lead in North America with at least $50 million in its first weekend of release. Tracking, however, has suggested...

October was another winner over 2022, thanks mostly to “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (AMC) and early stellar results for “Five Nights at Freddy’s” (Universal). That makes 10 of 11 months that improved compared to last year, with May only slightly down.
That could continue in November, but it might be close. The weight is on three franchise titles: “The Marvels” (Disney) on November 10, “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” (Lionsgate) and “Trolls Band Together” (Universal), both November 17. Those three, plus “Wish” (Disney) on November 22, have the best chances of surpassing $100 million in domestic gross, with “The Marvels” and “Hunger Games” the most likely during the month.
October’s improvement over last year will be around 20 percent. That’s off from the 26 percent improvement year to date, but still better than comparable Novembers.

There are just two more months to 2023, but November is important, since it’s the start of the holiday season with studios releasing big sequels and prequels, awards movies, and others that might stick around through the New Year. Read on for Gold Derby’s November 2023 box office preview.
“The Marvels” (Marvel/Disney – Nov. 10)
Normally, a new film from Marvel Studios would be a no-brainer to win the month, but audiences seem to be losing interest in superhero movies. Culture minister talks cuts after state funding for film soared to €800m in 2022
Italy is to cut the €800m of funding it currently earmarks for film production per year, according to Italian minister of culture Italian Gennaro Sangiuliano.
The move comes at a time when Italy is producing a high number of Italian and international films. However, Italian films are continuing to underperform at the box office compared to the pre-pandemic era.
“It’s time to intervene,” Sangiuliano said, noting that state funding for film soared from €400m in 2019 to €800m in 2022 according to data from the Investments in Cinema and Audiovisual Development Fund.

Indie films have scored some impressive figures at Spanish box office this year.
As the Spanish film industry comes together at Valladolid International Film Week (known locally as the Seminici), one of the big talking points will be how to make independent films stand out at the local box office.
Although Spain’s box office in the year to mid-October has grossed €400m, 35% higher than the same period in 2022, it is still 17% lower than the 2015-2019 pre-Covid average.
US studio blockbusters led the charge, headed by Barbie ($35.2m), Super Mario Bros. Movie ($29m), Avatar: The Way Of Water, ($26.9m) Oppenheimer...

When DreamWorks’ original “Trolls” movie was released, it wasn’t immediately apparent that the studio was launching a musical franchise. The rainbow-bright computer-animated feature boasted a sparkly soundtrack and the voice of Justin Timberlake as grumpy, gray-skinned Branch, but it wasn’t until the sequel — “Trolls World Tour,” released straight to streaming during the pandemic — that the series explicitly embraced its Top-40 ’tude. Now, having survived the rock apocalypse of that film, the saga rewinds to explore Branch’s backstory … as the junior member of a boy band, BroZone, in zero-calorie sugar high “Trolls Band Together.”
If you’re wondering why this is the first you’re hearing that Branch once performed arena concerts — as the diaper-clad “Baby B” — with older brothers Floyd (Troye Sivan), Spruce (Daveed Diggs), Clay (Kid Cudi) and John Dory (Eric André), just imagine how his girlfriend, Queen Poppy (Anna Kendrick), must feel about the news.

Trolls World Tour is the second animated film of the Trolls franchise. It comes as the direct successor of the 2016 film, which became a huge hit. The film had a lot of new content and concepts to offer, including new troll tribes, which, unfortunately, was not seen by a comparable audience to its predecessor due to the pandemic. Below is the list of the main characters – protagonists and antagonists alike – of Trolls World Tour. This list will help to get to know more about the stars who got to voice each character. DreamWorks Animation has laid off 70 employees, or approximately 4% of its workforce, amid production slowdowns caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and rising production costs.
“DreamWorks Animation reduced its workforce by approximately 70 positions,” a Dwa spokesperson said in a statement. “Roles affected were across corporate functions, feature, television and technology departments as part of an overall cost-reduction.”
DreamWorks Animation, which was acquired by NBCUniversal in 2016, found success this past winter with “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” which legged out for months at the box office and grossed $484 million worldwide. But the studio’s summer release, “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” was a bomb, with just $44.9 million grossed against a $70 million budget.
The studio hopes to rebound in November with “Trolls Band Together,” a sequel to the 2016 film that grossed $346.8 million and made billions more from merchandise featuring the film’s colorful characters. In 2020, the sequel “Trolls World Tour” became the...

This year's Thanksgiving weekend will be packed with new releases, but they just might be chaotic enough to coexist. Historically, the holiday has been one of the high points of the slower fall months at the box office, particularly for family movies. The current record-holder for a Thanksgiving opening is "Frozen," which grossed $67.3 million Friday-to-Sunday and $95.3 million over the full five-day holiday weekend. With the exception of "Creed II," all the other movies in the top 10 are also family films aimed at a younger audience, including "Tangled," "Moana," and "Toy Story 2."
That bodes well for "Trolls Band Together" and "Wish," two of six new wide releases hitting theaters around Thanksgiving 2023, but what about the rest? The grim world of Panem is set to return in dystopian sci-fi "The Hunger Games: The Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes." Michael Fassbender will try to coach the American Samoa soccer team into successfully scoring...

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

When DreamWorks purchased the “Trolls” franchise in 2013, it seemed like an odd revival. The furry creatures had been lost in the 1990’s after being the toy fad of a generation.
Since then, DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures managed to turn this IP back into a multi-million dollar success story, powered by catchy songs from star-studded casts and topped with glitter, lots of it. Clips from the third film, due to be released on Nov. 17 in the U.S, were presented Thursday at France’s Annecy Animation Festival, the world’s biggest toon fest, in front of an electrified audience.
Introduced by director Walt Dohrn and producer Gina Shay (returning for their third “Trolls”film together), along with co-director Tim Heitz, the whimsical world of “Trolls Band Together” unveiled itself as a richer and brighter universe than ever, leaving fans’ eyes sparkling.

DreamWorks Animation said Tuesday afternoon during a session at the Annecy Animation Festival that it has teamed with Netflix on Orion and the Dark, an animated feature written by Charlie Kaufman. Scroll down for first-look pics.

Exclusive: Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken has a lot going for her.
For starters, says the film’s director Kirk DeMicco, “she’s a princess, a superhero” and the first female titular character for a DreamWorks Animation movie.
Of course, there have been female lead characters in DreamWorks animated pictures, “but this is the first time where we said the story really is hers,” adds co-director Faryn Pearl (Trolls World Tour). “We changed the title from The Gillmans to Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken because it felt that we really wanted to celebrate that it’s her story, it’s her journey. The Night Agent is still sneaking its way up Netflix‘s list of Most Popular TV.
The series racked up another 90.04M hours viewed for the week of April 10 to April 16, reigning over the week’s English-language series and soaring to No. 6 on the all-time list. With 605M hours viewed since release, The Night Agent took the place of Stranger Things 3, bumping it down the list along with Lucifer Season 5 and Season 1 of The Witcher.
There is still a few days left before the series’ 28-day measurement window ends, meaning it could easily climb into the Top 5. The No. 5 spot is currently held by Season 1 of Bridgerton with 625M hours viewed.
Second place on this week’s Top 10 went to another thriller: Beef. Word of mouth has certainly helped the series starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong more than double its audience from the previous week with 70.38M hours viewed.

Sprawling Twelve Seasons, the series followed a group of brainiac friends and their exploits in love, life, and the search for knowledge.
The show garnered ten Emmy awards, four of which went to lead actor Jim Parsons, yet the show never nabbed the Best Comedy award.
The series has also spawned a spinoff series, Young Sheldon. Another spinoff series is in the works at Max, but the plot is unknown at this time.
While the series creator, Chuck Lorre, has continuous success with sitcoms on CBS, what has the main cast done? Find out below!
John Ross Bowie - Barry Kripke
Barry Kripke, a rival of Sheldon's and an overall annoying character, was played brilliantly by John Ross Bowie.
During his extended guest stint on The Big Bang Theory, he starred in the sitcom Speechless, starring Minni Driver.

You wouldn’t be blamed if you completely forgot about that film, as it debuted in April 2020, right at the height of the Covid lockdown. Obviously, that wasn’t the most ideal circumstance for a film release. Now, Dreamworks is hoping to bounce back with a new addition to the franchise, “Trolls Band Together.”

Ready to return to the world of “Trolls?” Because “Trolls Band Together” is nearly here (watch the brand-new trailer above). It’s a hoot.
And what’s more, TheWrap spoke with director Walt Dohrn and producer Gina Shay about the upcoming sequel and what we can expect when the band gets back together.
When asked about the title of the movie, Dohrn replied: “First of all, it’s the reunion of a band. We didn’t know this when we made the other films but Branch [the character played by Justin Timberlake] has four brothers. This was 20 years ago, when he was a kid, they all used to be in a family band together a boy band called Bro Zone. [The band] broke up 20 years ago. As bands do and as big brothers do, they go out into the world. But we find out at the top of this movie that one of the brothers has been kidnapped.

"Trolls" might not be the biggest animated movie franchise out there, but it has played an oddly crucial role in movie history. The first movie, which introduced singing troll protagonists Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin Timberlake), was released in 2016 to generally warm reviews and a modest $346.9 million at the worldwide box office. When the coronavirus pandemic hit U.S. shores in 2020, shortly before the scheduled release of "Trolls World Tour," Universal Pictures made the bold decision to release the movie simultaneously in theaters and on Premium VOD.
Three weeks later, "Trolls World Tour" had reportedly racked up $100 million in digital rentals. Theater owners were definitely not happy, but studios across Hollywood saw a ray of hope breaking through the doom-laden clouds of lockdown. With "Trolls World Tour" having survived and thrived in the relatively untested waters of PVOD, the same approach was used for movies like "Bill & Ted Face the Music...
