The Polish film industry is embracing variety and high-profile international collaborations, with a slew of new co-productions already generating buzz among buyers and festival programmers. “More and more established filmmakers, who used to look for collaborators in Romania or Hungary, are now coming to Poland — mostly because we are backed by concrete institutions and because there is money,” says producer Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska of Madants, heading to Berlinale’s European Film Market with “Ultima Thule” and Goran Stolevski’s “Housekeeping for Beginners.”
“Our crews speak English and work abroad. We are visible internationally,” she adds.
Madants is also behind James Napier Robertson’s upcoming Polish-Kiwi title “Joika,” one of six international co-productions backed by the Polish Film Institute in 2022. The shingle’s slate includes Małgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert’s “Let Me Out” and Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s follow-up to “The Silent Twins,” “Hot Spot.”

“Cold War” director Pawel Pawlikowski is set to follow his Best Director Oscar nomination with an even bigger project. The filmmaker has begun to assemble an A-list cast for “The Island,” a new original thriller for FilmNation Entertainment. Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have joined the cast of the film, which is written and directed by Pawlikowski but inspired by true events. The news was first reported by Deadline.
According to the official synopsis, the film “follows an attractive American couple in the 1930s who turn their back on civilization to build their own private paradise on a deserted island and live off the land. But after a millionaire passing by on his yacht inadvertently turns them into a tabloid newspaper sensation, a self-styled Countess arrives out of the blue with her two strange lovers with plans to take over the island and build a luxury hotel. Ben Whishaw is to lead Limonov, The Ballad of Eddie, a feature from Kirill Serebrennikov, the Russian filmmaker whose Tchaikovsky’s Wife will play at Cannes.
The film penned by Serebrennikov, Ben Hopkins and Cold War‘s Paweł Pawlikowski is inspired by Emmanuel Carrère’s best-selling novel and tells the story of Eduard Limonov’s life and journey through Russia, the U.S. and Europe during the second half of the 20th century.
Limonov was many things, a revolutionary militant, a thug, an underground writer, a butler to a millionaire in Manhattan, but also a switchblade-waving poet, a lover of beautiful women, a warmonger, a political agitator and a novelist who wrote of his own greatness.
Serebrennikov’s Tchaikovsky’s Wife (Zhena Chaikovskogo) is in competition at Cannes, the fourth from the Russian director following Petrov’s Flu last year, 2018’s Leto and 2016’s Uchenik.

Poland’s Opus Film and Scandinavian distributor Scanbox are teaming with fast-rising Danish production house Motor on Mads Hedegaard’s directorial debut “Stranger,” co-penned with Jesper Fink. Tagged by Motor as “‘Apocalypto’ meets ‘The Revenant,’” “Stranger” will be pitched virtually on Feb. 5 by Hedegaard and producer Andreas Hjortdal, at the Discovery section of the Göteborg Film Festival’s Nordic Film Market industry showcase.
The film goes back to pre-historic times, 6,000 years ago, when migrant farmers virtually replaced the hunter-gatherer populations of northern Europe. When 16-year old Aathi and her family -the first farmers ever – arrive from the south in the country now known as Denmark, all except Aathi and her younger brother are killed by local hunters. To survive, the two youngsters are forced to live with the hunters’ tribe in the eerie forest and integrate. But when Aathi becomes pregnant and the child is forcefully adopted by the tribe,...

The Academy on Friday unveiled to its voters a record 93 films will compete in the Best International Feature Film category — which will no doubt leading to a busy four weeks of viewing before first-round voting begins on Feb. 1.
Helped by Covid-inspired rules that relaxed the usual entry requirements, the films topped the record of 92 entries set in 2017, as TheWrap suggested they likely would in December. The films include a record 34 female directors, seven more than the previous high of 27 set last year.
This is not the official list of qualifying films, which is expected to be released by the Academy later in January. But these 93 films are all in the members-only online screening room devoted to the category, and each of them has been put on a “required viewing” list for one-fourth of the voters. It is unlikely that any of the films will be disqualified at this point, although...

Variety has teamed up with London-based international production event Focus, which runs online Dec. 15-17, to present “Variety Streaming Room: The Big Restart,” the latest in its series of online panel discussions. The collaboration is the first time Variety has worked with Focus on a live digital event.
Leading producers from France and Poland will be taking part in the two sessions, which will both air Dec. 9, discussing the opportunities that exist for international filmmakers in their countries. Among the topics to be covered will be how filmmakers are operating within the pandemic protocols, and how they will be able to realize their creative visions by shooting in the territories.
Among those taking part in the session on Poland will be producers Ewa Puszczyńska, whose credits include Oscar winner “Ida” and Oscar nominee “Cold War,” and Mariusz Włodarski, whose recent films include Poland’s Oscar entry this year “Never Gonna Snow Again.

December, as it turns out, isn’t a particularly great month for freebies on either of the major consoles.
Hot on the heels of Microsoft’s disappointing Games With Gold reveal yesterday, Sony has followed suit with its own announcement for PlayStation Plus members and, while the latter selection is definitely better, there’s little here worth shouting about. Just Cause 4, Avalanche Studios’ open world action-adventure sequel, is certainly the highlight of this particular lineup and is joined by Team17’s 32-player arena battler, Worms Rumble, as well as 3v3 shooter, Rocket Arena.
It’s worth noting that while all of these can be played on PlayStation 5 via backwards compatibility, Worms Rumble will be released natively for the new console on December 1st. For full dates of availability, see below:

When the Italian selection committee meets early this week to determine which film it will submit to the Oscar race for Best International Feature Film, it might well be the most consequential decision any country in the race will have made this year — and probably the only one that has the potential to give the category a genuine frontrunner.
That possibility exists because one of the 25 (!) films that the committee has said are in contention is Edoardo Ponti’s “The Life Ahead,” a drama that contains the first screen performance in a decade from Ponti’s mother, Sophia Loren. Not only was Loren the first actor to win an Oscar for a performance not in English, which she did in 1961 for “Two Women,” she’s considered a strong contender in this year’s Best Actress category for her affecting role as a retired prostitute who cares for the children of...

Kino Lorber has acquired the North American rights to “Never Gonna Snow Again,” Poland’s submission to the Oscars race for Best International Film, and the indie distributor is planning a release in spring 2021.
Małgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert directed “Never Gonna Snow Again,” and the two also co-wrote and produced, with Englert also serving as the cinematographer. The film premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival this year and won the Premio Fondazione Fai Persona Lavoro Ambiente Award, and it was also an official selection of the canceled Telluride Film Festival.
“Never Gonna Snow Again” stars “Stranger Things” actor Alec Utgoff as Zhenia, a Russian-speaking immigrant from the East who enters the lives of the rich residents of a bland, walled-off community as a masseur. Despite their wealth, the residents emit an inner sadness and a longing. The mysterious newcomer’s hands heal and his eyes seem to penetrate their souls.

Negative reactions to Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War are already so prolific that variations of the phrase “CoD Cold War is trash” are currently trending on Google, YouTube, and on social media.
So what’s the problem? Well, as is usually the case, the issues are varied. At this moment, though, most of the complaints regarding Cold War‘s release involve content and technical shortcomings. For instance, some fans feel that the game’s campaign (which reports suggest can easily be beaten in a couple of hours) is bare-bones even by modern franchise standards. Others have suggested that Cold War‘s multiplayer maps are lacking in both quality and quantity. Many, many, more are calling out the game’s bugs, subpar visuals, and bizarre mechanics.
The theme of many of these complaints is that it just feels like Cold War was rushed to release before it was ready.

Call of Duty fans are only hours away from getting their hands on the latest installment of the franchise, the spy-themed Black Ops: Cold War, which sees the heroes from the original Black Ops game on the tail of a Russian spy known as Perseus. Series “heroes” Frank Woods, Jason Hudson, and Alex Mason will be dabbling in a bit of espionage on the orders of President Ronald Reagan. It’s clear Treyarch and Raven Software are aiming for a pure ’80s action flick feel with their latest.
Players anxious to jump in and experience everything Cold War has to offer will be able to do so very soon. If you’re in the US, you’ll only have to wait until 12 am Et on Nov. 13 or 9 pm Pt on Nov. 12 to play on Xbox Series X, PS5, PC, Xbox One, and PS4, according to Call of Duty watchdog site Charlie Intel.

Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War isn’t just the first next-gen Call of Duty title: it’s a Call of Duty game that will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC at the same time when it’s released on Nov. 13. While that’s good news for Call of Duty fans who don’t want to upgrade to a next-gen platform just to play the latest entry in the hit shooter franchise, the game’s ambitious release strategy has rightfully raised questions about the extent of its cross-platform and cross-play capabilities.
The good news is that Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War does support cross-platform options such as cross-play and cross-progression. Simply put, you will be able to play Cold War with your friends regardless of which platform they’re on. As noted on the Activision blog, “an entire Multiplayer party...

Believe it or not, today marks the two-week countdown to the long-awaited launch of Sony’s next console. While Microsoft will be the party officially kicking off next-gen this time around with the worldwide release of Xbox Series X/S on November 10th, PlayStation 5 is due to follow just two days later, though only in a select few territories, including North America. Folks in Europe and elsewhere will have to exercise patience for an additional week, though in the grand scheme of things, seven days matters very little.
Regardless of which date you have jotted down on your calendar, the launch lineups for both consoles will be identical no matter where they’re purchased, and it’s Sony’s entrant in the race that’s currently the runaway winner in that regard. While the situation can (and most certainly will) change in the days and weeks ahead, gamers who opt...

The long awaited PlayStation 5 is finally hitting stores on November 12th, along with a bunch of new titles for the next-gen console. Activision has revealed the first official details for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s multiplayer, which will attempt to combine some of the best elements of previous Call of Duty games while incorporating some intriguing new elements.
One of the biggest surprises of the reveal was Treyarch and Raven Software’s insistence that they intend to incorporate a narrative into the multiplayer experience. Said narrative will be featured in everything from the equipment multiplayer operatives use to the levels themselves and the objectives you complete. Timeline-wise, the multiplayer will take place in the ’80s, but it will be set years after the game’s campaign.

The closure of Polish cinemas earlier this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, dealt a temporary blow to the 17th edition of the Millennium Docs Against Gravity Film Festival, which was slated to take place in May. But the organizers were determined to hit the ground running as they geared up for a fall reboot, which will unspool across seven Polish cities between Sept. 4-13 with some 1,200 screenings—“more than at the Berlinale,” notes festival founder Artur Liebhart.

Netflix has given a platform to various voices in the Hollywood industry such as Alfonso Cuarón (“Roma”), Dee Rees (“Mudbound”), and most recently Martin Scorsese (“The Irishman”), in which filmmakers get to bring their distinct visions to life with the autonomy they wouldn’t be afforded at a traditional studio. As Oscars voters have become more accepting of the streaming giant’s offerings (see Laura Dern’s best supporting actress win for “Marriage Story”), it’s encouraging to see Netflix roll out the red carpet for Charlie Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things.” With critics weighing in with mostly positive reviews, Kaufman — who serves as the film’s writer, director and producer — along with his below-the-line team, could be an underdog contender in this year’s unusual awards race.

A new trailer revealed at Gamescom 2020 gives us our first look at the mission briefing that sets off the events of Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War. A Russian spy codenamed “Perseus” wants to win the Cold War for the Soviet Union, but Ronald Reagan has a plan to stop him. Vital to the plan are the characters of the very first Black Ops installment: Hudson, Woods, and Mason. Also introduced in the trailer is a new operative who many confused for Robert Redford and Brad Pitt during the game’s initial reveal. The guy’s name is actually Russell Adler.
Once you get past how horrifying CGI Reagan looks in this game, check out the new story trailer below:

From his screenplays for Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, to his directorial efforts Synecdoche, New York and Anomalisa, audiences have come to understand that turning on a Charlie Kaufman movies means—for better or worse—discovering something they’ve never seen before. His work is so intrinsically tied to a sense of originality that a 2010 book on his career was titled Confessions of an Original Mind. So for many Kaufman fans, myself included, it was surprising to hear that his latest film would be an adaptation of a novel, Ian Reid’s 2016 debut I’m Thinking of Ending Things.
While it’s true that the story originated in Reid’s mind, and its premise—a woman has dinner with her boyfriend’s family for the first time—is deceptively simple, this film keeps the audience on their toes as much as any Kaufman project. It...

Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War is officially this year’s installment in the popular first-person shooter franchise. Revealed in a teaser in late August after days of teasing the game’s announcement, the sequel focus on the tensions between the United States and Russia during the height of the Cold War.
Yet, although the teaser did a good job of setting up the general themes and conflict of the new game, it still left plenty of questions to answer. How will the new game work in tandem with Modern Warfare‘s current Warzone battle royale mode? Or will Cold War get its own battle royale mode for players to obsess over?
Most important of all, since Treyarch and Raven Software are developing Cold War together, does this mean that the new Call of Duty game will have a Zombies mode?

This year’s Call of Duty game has finally been announced. As previously rumored, the game is called Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War. The title, which is being developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, was confirmed in a teaser trailer ahead of a bigger world reveal set for Aug. 26. The reveal will happen within Verdansk, the massive map where the Call of Duty Warzone battle royale game is set, according to GameSpot.

The trailer mostly revolves around Kgb defector Yuri Bezmenov, a former Soviet journalist who famously warned the world of a Soviet spy tasked with infiltrating Western intelligence in order to win the nuclear arms race at the height of the Cold War. Can the indie ecosystem that’s at the heart of the European film industry survive with streaming giants encroaching on its underlying business model, just as the theatrical experience is teetering?
Maybe. But if the indie filmmaking ethos does survive, its business model will definitely be different.
That was the main takeaway of a webinar on the state of independent film production held with a group of top international producers and talents as part of the Locarno 2020 digital StepIn initiative in collaboration with Variety.

It’s rare that one of our most-anticipated films of the year kicks off the fall movie season, but that will be the case this September when Charlie Kaufman’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things—his first new film since 2015’s Anomolisa and his first live-action film since his 2008 feature debut Synecdoche, New York—premieres on Netflix. As you work your way through his incredible, sprawling debut novel Antkind, the first trailer for his next film has now arrived.
Adapted by Ian Reid’s book and starring Jessie Buckley, Jesse Plemons, David Thewlis, and Toni Colette, the film follows a boyfriend and girlfriend’s trip to the former’s parent’s house while the latter has it in their mind to end their relationship. It remains to be seen if Kaufman will keep the twists of the book, but the trailer certainly contains a great deal of intrigue.

The first trailer for Charlie Kaufman’s “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” has finally arrived. Adapted from the book by Iain Reid, it’s Kaufman’s first film behind the camera since 2015’s animated “Anomalisa” and stars Jessie Buckley, Jesse Plemons, Toni Collette, and David Thewlis. Watch the trailer below.
In this surreal and melancholy study of loneliness that’s one of the fall’s must-see films, Buckley plays an unnamed woman who accompanies her boyfriend Jake (Plemons) on a road trip in a snowstorm to meet his parents (Collette and Thewlis) for dinner at their farmhouse. Six weeks into their courtship and Buckley’s character already has plans to break the relationship off but can’t bring herself to do so. Once they arrive at Jake’s parents house, events spiral into decidedly Kaufman territory as the woman begins to question her surroundings, her sanity, and the fabric of the world around her.

This is hardly the first time that we’ve heard rumors that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will serve as the 2020 installment into the Call of Duty franchise. In fact, that information...

Exclusive: Billions’ Damian Lewis and The Affair alum Dominic West are in negotiations to headline and executive produce a limited series adaptation of bestselling Cold War espionage thriller A Spy Among Friends for Spectrum Originals and UK streamer BritBox.
The six-episode A Spy Among Friends, based on Ben Macintyre’s book, comes from former Homeland executive producer Alexander Cary, Sony Pictures Television and ITV Studios. It is tentatively scheduled to premiere in the fall of 2021.
A Spy Among Friends follows the defection of notorious British intelligence officer and Kgb double agent, Kim Philby (West), through the lens of his complex relationship with MI6 colleague and close friend, Nicholas Elliott (Lewis). The show examines espionage through their friendship, the fallout of which affects East-West relations to this day.
Philby was a British spy who notoriously defected to the Soviet Union in the 1950s, betraying secrets to the Russians in the early years of the Cold War.

It’s a brand new month, and though it might seem like all hope is lost for 2020, at least streaming services have kept us occupied with plenty of stuff to watch. And like most platforms, Amazon Prime is dropping a ton of new movies on day one of July so that you can fill up your list and stay glued to your television. Not every flick releasing today is a winner, but you’re likely to find at least a handful of things you’re going to be dying to see.
For starters, Buried is an underrated Ryan Reynolds thriller launching on the service today, and if you can manage to sit through an hour and a half of a film that takes place entirely within a coffin, you’ll find a hell of a riveting experience. This extraordinarily tense pic tells the story of an American civilian truck driver...

German entertainment giant Ufa is continuing its push into feature films with a slew of high-profile projects, including an upcoming Siegfried and Roy biopic and a sequel to the 2014 historical epic “The Physician,” starring Tom Payne (“Prodigal Son”).
The ramp-up follows the huge box office success last year of Oscar winner Caroline Link’s “All About Me,” based on the childhood memoir of German comedian Hape Kerkeling, which became 2019’s second biggest local box-office hit with €31.25 million ($35.34 million) via Warner Bros.
Other upcoming titles include Leander Haussmann’s highly anticipated Cold War laffer “A Stasi Comedy,” which Constantin Film is set to release next year. Set in the 1980s, the film centers on a young agent of East Germany’s infamous state security service, played by David Kross (“Balloon”), who is sent to infiltrate East Berlin’s counterculture scene and who, years later, is confronted with the possibility of his...
