Disney Plus has launched development of a sequel to 1993’s fantasy comedy “Hocus Pocus” with “Workaholics” writer and co-producer Jen D’Angelo on board to script.
The original “Hocus Pocus” starred Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as a trio of witch sisters who have been cursed since 1693 in Salem, Ma. The witches are are inadvertently resurrected 300 years later by a boy whose family has moved from Los Angeles to Salem.
However, as the witches try to acclimate to the 20th Century, they discover — to their horror — that Halloween has become a holiday. Midler, Parker and Najimy are not attached to the sequel but Disney is hopeful that they may become involved.
Kenny Ortega directed the original from a script by Mick Garris and Neil Cuthbert, based on a story by Garris and David Kirschner. Omri Katz played the young male lead, and his sister was portrayed by Thora Birch.

Metacritic has unveiled its list of the worst new TV shows of 2018, and you can say this for the small screen: Its most poorly received offerings fared better with reviewers than their silver-screen counterparts. Only two of the top 10 landed in the dreaded red zone of a Metascore below 40, which indicates “generally unfavorable reviews”; the other eight were all in the “mixed or average reviews” range. Even so, Netflix’s widely disliked “Insatiable” — which courted controversy before it even premiered, owing largely to accusations of “fat-shaming” — easily topped the list.
In his review of the “disastrous comedy,” IndieWire’s Ben Travers noted that “heroes are villains, villains are heroes, statutory rape is a joke, and people — people! — are murdered, all in a high school ‘comedy’ primarily obsessed with winning a fancy tiara. Lauren Gussis’ disastrous hodgepodge of mistakes is an absolute mess, and it marks the worst Netflix original series yet to be released.

“Modern Family” co-creator Steve Levitan has renewed his criticism Fox News and its parent company amid backlash to the cable channel’s coverage following the mass shooting Saturday at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.
“By espousing unfounded conspiracy theories and justifying Trump’s reprehensible statements and actions, Fox News fuels our country’s divisiveness,” Levitan told Variety. “I sincerely hope Lachlan Murdoch recognizes the damage this is doing and finally brings sound journalistic ethics and standards to his network before more unhinged people are riled up to send bombs and shoot up churches and synagogues.”
The co-creator of ABC comedy “Modern Family,” Levitan has a longstanding relationship with Fox, which produces the series through studio 20th Century Fox Television. That unit is expected to be absorbed by the Walt Disney Co. as part of its pending acquisition of 21st Century Fox, expected to be finalized early next year. Fox Broadcasting, home...

The Peacock Network has announced that Brooklyn Nine-Nine's sixth season will span 18 episodes as opposed to the previously ordered 13.
Yes, that means viewers will spend Five more episodes with Brooklyn's 99th precinct, which is a big thing.

Fox has officially ghosted on “Ghosted” after just one season.
The Adam Scott and Craig Robinson-led comedy from creator Tom Gormican has been canceled by the broadcast network, less than a week after airing its first season finale — which will now be its last.
An individual with knowledge of the decision tells TheWrap that, while the network was “proud of the show,” the addition of “Thursday Night Football,” as well as new comedies on Fridays and Sundays, and the large amount of returning shows next season, Fox’s schedule couldn’t accommodate a second season of “Ghosted.” However, a few unaired episodes from the first season may still become available for viewing at a later date.

Is “Ghosted” coming back?
That’s a question on viewers’ minds as upfronts week comes to a close, with Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS and The CW all having announced their fall programming schedules as of Thursday. ‘Cause some of those slates have holes in them, meaning the statuses of almost half a dozen shows on broadcast television are still up in the air.
Look, we can accept the fact that not every series will be saved like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” — not every show should be. But come on, networks — minus ABC and The CW, who have already killed or renewed everything they’re going to — fans need to hear one way or another whether their favorite programs will be returning this fall, especially for ones that have a crazy-devoted fanbase.

“La To Vegas” has been canceled at Fox after one season.
The single-camera comedy set aboard the fictional Jackpot Airlines weekend Los Angeles to Las Vegas flights will not be seeing a return trip for the 2018-19 television season. The first season, which launched in early 2018, drew an average of 2.3 million viewers and a 0.73 rating in the 18-49 demo.

Fox’s single-camera airplane comedy series La To Vegas has been permanently grounded as the network has opted not to renew it for a second season.
As Deadline exclusively reported last week, Fox had been looking to get La to Vegas executive producer Will Ferrell to appear in the Season 2 premiere in order to create buzz around the comedy’s return. I hear Ferrell was open to possibly guest starring in an episode next season but would not commit to doing the Season 2 opener. While not the crucial factor, that, along with the network’s reduced shelf space because of the addition of Thursday Night Football, contributed to Fox’s decision to cancel the comedy starring Dylan McDermott.

Exclusive: When discussing the pending renewal decision on bubble freshman comedy La to Vegas, the network chairman Dana Walden this morning noted that series creator/exec producer Lon Zimmet and executive producer Steve Levitan are currently working on Season 2 ideas and that “if we can’t find a way to make noise, we won’t do (a second season)” of the Dylan McDermott series.

Fox has picked up its first pilot for the upcoming season with The Passage, starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar.
Gosselaar last starred in the critically acclaimed but short-lived Fox series Pitch.
The Passage is based on a best-selling trilogy by Justin Cronin that Stephen King called, “one of the great achievements in American fantasy fiction.”
Written for television by Liz Heldens, The Passage follows a 10-year-old girl named Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney), a test subject for an experiment at a secret government medical facility experimenting with a dangerous virus that could either cure all disease or cause the downfall of the human race.
Gosselaar plays Brad Wolgast, the federal agent who becomes her surrogate father as he tries to protect her.

“Roseanne” was once again the top show of Tuesday night by a wide margin in the key demo, but fell to CBS’ “NCIS” in total viewers.
Airing at 8 p.m., “Roseanne” averaged a 2.5 rating in adults 18-49 and 10.3 million viewers. “NCIS” pulled in a 1.2 in the demo and 12.1 million viewers, with the episode being the first of a two-parter that will see the exit of longtime series regular Pauley Perrette. This marks the first time “Roseanne” has been beaten in either measure since its premiere in late March.
Furthermore, “Roseanne” was down by approximately 26% in the demo and 23% in total viewers compared to its last original episode on April 17. The revival of the ABC series was bound to come down to earth at some point, and it has plenty of room to fall before anyone need be concerned.
Later on ABC, “The Middle” took hits in both measure comparable to “Roseanne.

Let the year of Derbel McDillet continue: Seven years after Dylan McDermott’s starring role in the landmark anthology horror series “American Horror Story,” Dermot Mulroney will star in his own landmark anthology horror series, “Into the Dark.”
Hulu unveiled new details Wednesday morning about the previously announced series from Blumhouse Television, including a release date, list of cast and crew, plot summaries, and more.
Running year-round, “Into the Dark” will release new episodes on the first Friday of every month. For anyone worried about a lack of content, don’t: Each standalone entry will be feature-length, essentially turning the series into a Movie of the Month club run by Blumhouse — the production company behind “Get Out,” “Insidious,” and “The Purge.”
The first film episode, “The Body,” will be released October 5. Fitting with the series’ theme — each episode is inspired by a holiday from the month of its release — the...

Yup, it’s definitely happening: Captain Dave (Dylan McDermott) is actually going to propose to Patricia (Amy Landecker) in the Season 1 finale of “La to Vegas.”
Well, if he can get his hands on an engagement ring, that is.
In a clip from Tuesday’s first season closer, which is exclusive to TheWrap, the eccentric Jackpot Airlines pilot is out one rock and looking for another so that he can pop the question to Nichole’s (Olivia Macklin) mother. Problem is, he’s got no money. (Classic, Dave.)

He proposed the idea of the proposal to Colin (Ed Weeks) and Artem (Peter Stormare) at the end of last week’s episode, and they were not on board. Mainly because, you know, the Patricia and Dave had just broken up.
But now it seems his friends are willing to help, with Colin even considering selling Dave his ex’s engagement ring that is now available due to the “flaming wreckage” of his failed marriage.
And big spender Dave is willing to write an Iou for any amount to get the family heirloom. Now they just have to get Colin’s ex to hand it over.

When Dylan McDermott first read the role of Captain Dave in the Fox comedy “La to Vegas” he knew instantly that “this is the guy I’ve been waiting for.” McDermott, who did stand-up in New York and grew up admiring Peter Sellers, was “looking to do something different” from the heavy dramas that made him a star. “I love this absurd humor,” he reveals, “and Captain Dave obviously is absurd, so I was just completely attracted to him.” Dave is the drunken, womanizing pilot of a budget airline whose main flight is a weekend route from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Watch our exclusive video interview with McDermott above.

“Roseanne” keeps bringing ABC those impressive Tuesday primetime numbers, even when they are airing a marathon of repeats.
Last night, reruns of the revived sitcom filled up almost all of the Disney-owned broadcaster’s block (with the exception of a new episode of freshman series “Deception” at 10 p.m.) and landed the network in first for the evening in ratings, according to preliminary numbers from Nielsen.
However, ABC did not take the win total viewers, that went to NBC, whose new episode of “The Voice” at 8 p.m. still fared better than the “Roseanne” repeat in the time slot. But the comedy came back around again at 9 p.m., with an old episode that outshined the Peacock’s new drama “Rise.”

“Roseanne” was steady in its fourth week in the Tuesday overnight ratings for another win in both key measures for the night.
Airing on ABC at 8 p.m., “Roseanne” averaged a 3.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 13 million viewers. That is down a scant few percentage points from the 3.5 and 13.8 million viewers the sitcom revival drew last week. It was also the first time since the highly-rated one-hour premiere on March 27 that the show did not see double-digit declines week-to-week.
Freshman ABC comedy “Alex Inc.” aired immediately after “Roseanne” instead of its normal Wednesday time slot, no doubt to give the new show the ratings bump that “Roseanne” has given to ABC’s Tuesday lineup. The move paid off, with “Alex Inc.” up over 30% in both measures from last week with a 1.2 and 4.9 million viewers.
“Black-ish” and “Splitting Up Together” were both off from last week, while “For the People” was down in viewers.

ABC’s revival of “Roseanne” was the top show of Tuesday night in the overnight ratings for the third week in a row, despite once again being down double digits from the previous week.
Airing at 8 p.m., “Roseanne” drew a 3.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 13.5 million viewers. That is down approximately 13% in the demo and 12% in total viewers compared to last week, when the show drew a 3.9 and 15.4 million viewers. That is less of a drop off than the show saw between its premiere and its second week, however. The premiere drew an astounding 5.2 rating and 18.4 million viewers, airing two episodes back-to-back.
The “Roseanne” bump still translated into good numbers for most of ABC’s lineup, though the network’s Tuesday comedies saw declines comparable to “Roseanne’s” from last week. “The Middle” drew a 1.9 and 7.5 million viewers. “Black-ish” averaged a 1.4 and 5.1 million. “Splitting Up Together” pulled in a 1.2 and 4.2 million.
