- For the past seven years Muhi, a brave and spirited Palestinian boy has been living in an Israeli hospital, unable to return to his home in Gaza. Caught between two worlds and two peoples, Muhi is raised in paradoxical circumstances that transcend identity, religion and the conflict that divides his world. His time at the hospital is running out and Muhi now faces the most critical choices of his life.
- For the past 7 years, Muhi, a Palestinian child from Gaza, has been living in an Israeli hospital, accompanied only by his grandfather. Both of them live confined to the hospital's grounds due to security regulations. Here, Muhi is treated, cured and raised by those considered enemies of his people, while his parents are marooned in Gaza. To save Muhi's life, Israeli doctors had to amputate his four limbs and now Israeli and Gazan doctors agree that with Muhi's medical needs and Gaza's healthcare system nearly shattered it would be a death sentence for Muhi to return to his family in Gaza. Muhi's mother has only been able to visit three times in the last seven years, so although Muhi receives medical care, he is growing up without maternal care and he is wrestling with the weight of this loss. Months turn to years and Muhi, now 7 years old, is caught between two homes and two peoples. He is growing up at ease with both Arabs and Jews at the last oasis where Israelis and Palestinians meet. Muhi is watched over by his Palestinian grandfather Abu Naim and an Israeli humanitarian and peace activist, Buma Inbar. Both men, having lost sons due to conflict and war, formed this extraordinary friendship with the goal to secure a future for Muhi, whether in Israel or Gaza. Muhi's future is a tug-of-war of pressures between the Israeli hospital, his Gaza family and the inevitable surrounding politics. The Israeli hospital says Muhi should never return to Gaza, he must stay in Israel for the care that keeps him alive. Yet the hospital can't keep him indefinitely. Muhi's grandfather has been repeatedly denied a permit to stay in Israel, constantly fearing deportation. Muhi's father opposes the child's future in Israel, claiming growing up as an Israeli will further distance his child from his family and his people. Meanwhile, Muhi and his grandfather continue to wander from ward to ward, within the hospital, like medical refugees. And although Muhi receives medical care, he is growing up without maternal care and he is wrestling with the weight of this loss.
MUHI - GENERALLY TEMPORARY explores Muhi's complex and often contradictory world, torn between two homes and two identities. The film offers an evocative portrayal of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in human terms. It is also story about belonging, revealing both exceptional challenges and friendships, as well as inspiring resilience within the back drop of this age-old conflict.
