Shane Black's 2016 cop comedy "The Nice Guys" was a winking, comedic riff on hard-boiled detective movies, meant to deconstruct the genre as much as pay homage to it. Set in Los Angeles in 1977, the plot revolves around the booming porn industry and the private investigators hired to look into a mysterious death. The central joke of "The Nice Guys" is that the main P.I.s, Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) are kind of bumbling idiots. They know how to investigate mysteries, but their central talents seem to be good luck and mere tenacity. Because the film was written by Black, the dialogue crackles and the characters vibrate with energy and life; Black doesn't write dialogue to be merely functional, preferring to give his characters wit and pathos.
"The Nice Guys" cost $50 million to make, but only ultimately earned about $71 million worldwide, which, in Hollywood terms, is a notable bomb.

Actor Ryan Gosling has an eclectic set of movies in his filmography, which has made him a versatile actor. Though the actor had his breakthrough with the romance flick The Notebook, he has branched out to action, comedy, sci-fi, and drama. Gosling was recently nominated for an Oscar for his performance as Ken in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
One of Gosling’s most underrated performances is the Shane Black-directed black comedy The Nice Guys. The neo-noir comedy sees him play a detective in the ‘70s along with Russell Crowe. Though the film is a cult classic now, it was a commercial failure. Gosling mentioned that the success of the animated movie The Angry Birds Movie ruined The Nice Guys’ chance for a sequel.

Ryan Gosling is reflecting on the reason he believes the 2016 action-comedy The Nice Guys didn’t score a sequel.
The Barbie actor told ComicBook.com, in an interview published online Tuesday, that there likely won’t be a follow-up because the original movie was overwhelmed by The Angry Birds Movie at the box office during its debut weekend.
“So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie, and we opened up against Angry Birds,” Gosling explained. “So Angry Birds just, just destroyed us. Angry Birds got a sequel.” The Angry Birds Movie 2 premiered in 2019.
And the Fall Guy star was right, as the Shane Black-directed film had a tough battle during its opening weekend. It was not only up against Angry Birds but also Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. Additionally, Captain America: Civil War was in its third weekend in theaters, so Marvel fans also played a factor.

San Francisco, April 15 (Ians) Rovio Entertainment, the creator of the iconic Angry Birds mobile game franchise, may be acquired for $1 billion by Sega, the Japanese video game and entertainment company, the media reported.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Sega is close to buying Rovio and the deal may get closed by early next week.
The original Angry Birds game was a super success in 2009, but the franchise has seemingly fallen off since its 2014 peak.
The original was the first mobile game to reach 1 billion downloads, a record certified by Guinness World Records.
‘The Angry Birds Movie’ was a box-office success and is still the seventh highest grossing video game movie.
Its 2019 sequel, ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’, did not achieve the same level of success though.
Rovio in February this year removed its original Angry Birds game from Google Play Store, and renamed the Apple iOS version to Red’s First Flight.

Viola Davis is, to put it lightly, an icon. Not only is she an Egot - or an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner - but she's also had major roles in some of the most talked-about movies and shows of the past decade or so, including "The Woman King" and Ben Affleck's "Air." She's also worked hard for many philanthropic and activist causes over the years. As it turns out, she's already passing her love for acting down to her daughter, Genesis Tennon, who made her big-screen debut in a voice-acting role in 2019's "The Angry Birds Movie 2."
Here's everything we know about budding star Genesis.
Genesis Tennon
Davis and her husband, Julius Tennon, welcomed Genesis via adoption back in 2011, as People reported at the time. In 2017, Davis opened up to the publication about her daughter, saying her love for Genesis, now 12, "surpasses anything that I could want from the material world.

Exclusive: Sugar23 has signed rising star Brooklynn Prince, on the heels of her new film Cocaine Bear‘s opening weekend triumph, with a current worldwide gross of $28M+ at the worldwide box office, against a production budget of roughly $30M.
The R-rated horror-comedy directed for Universal by Elizabeth Banks has broken out as one of the early success stories of 2023, affirming that original features, and those in the comedy arena, can certainly still perform in today’s marketplace. Based loosely on real events that took place in 1985, the film watches as a duffel bag’s worth of cocaine drops from a drug smuggler’s plane and winds up in a Georgia forest, becoming a favorite snack for a hulking black bear. An electric set of unfortunate souls, including Prince, Keri Russell and Christian Convery, are then subject to the animal’s murderous rampage.

Three-time Oscar nominee Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the 2010 blockbuster hit with Chris Sanders, and directed both the sequel in 2014 and the threequel in 2019, will write, direct and produce this live-action offering.
The “How to Train Your Dragon” trilogy, based on the book series by Cressida Cowell, is one of the artistic milestones of the Katzenberg-founded animation studio, with total global grosses of 1.6 billion and three Best Animated Feature Oscar nominations.

After years of delays, Uncharted has finally made its way into theaters. However, to the surprise of very few, the video adaptation is entering the weekend with a weak rotten tomatoes score. The website has all 48 video game adaptations ranked and out of that number, there are only four movies that have a good rotten tomatoes score: Werewolves Within (86%), The Angry Birds Movie 2 (73%), Detective Pikachu (68%), and Sonic The Hedgehog (63%). San Francisco, March 3 (Ians) After launching the GameOn app on Android devices back in November 2020, Amazon has expanded the mobile streaming-centric app for iOS users.
Amazon GameOn is a free app that lets users record short clips (anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes of content) of gameplay from a variety of titles that support screen recording capture, TechCrunch reported on Tuesday.
Users can screen record these clips directly into the GameOn library at which point they can add commentary or additional edits before publishing to the GameOn platform or sharing links to the platform on other sites.
The GameOn platform is interestingly fully disconnected from Twitch with separate branding and different channels, the report said.
Amazon has been partnering with streamers to wholly focus on mobile gaming while promoting challenges unique to the app, it added.

As the world continues to practice safe social distancing, many schools are remaining closed and keeping children confined at home. Thankfully, then, Netflix has been knocking it out of the park with their current animated film lineup, ensuring that kids have plenty to watch while they’re cooped up.
Just last week, the addition of Despicable Me finally knocked the extraordinarily popular Tiger King from the coveted #1 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 list. As of today, the 2010 animated hit still remains pretty popular and is currently at number one on the Top 10 movies list and doesn’t seem interested in budging, despite the live-action Green Hornet encroaching quickly on its territory.
Meanwhile, The Angry Birds Movie 2 is steadily climbing the charts at #6, and Pixar’s Incredibles 2 is sitting comfortably at #7. Finally, rounding out the current dominance of animated films on Netflix is the 2018 iteration of The Grinch at...

When Universal’s “Trolls World Tour” lands on home entertainment platforms on Friday, it’ll mark the first major studio movie to skip its planned traditional theatrical release since the coronavirus outbreak forced cinemas to close.
The unprecedented move, going against perennial protocol in exhibition, has many in the entertainment industry wondering: is the bold bet a sign of the times, or a paradigm shift in Hollywood that will shatter theatrical windows?
“The ‘Trolls World Tour’ release boils down to extraordinary measures under extraordinary circumstances,” said Jeff Bock, a media analyst with Exhibitor Relations.
But it’s not the only sign that Hollywood is throwing out the conventional playbook as it struggles to find new revenue streams while multiplexes remain shuttered. Since Universal’s announcement, Paramount sold romantic comedy “The Lovebirds” to Netflix, Disney sent “Artemis Fowl” straight to its streaming service Disney Plus, and Stx siphoned off action adventure...

Angry Birds has already slingshotted itself to just about every aspect of the multimedia realm with the exception of top-tier television. However, the ubiquitous app-game-spawned franchise will soon check off that crucial box, thanks to a deal with streaming giant Netflix.
Game maker Rovio Entertainment will team with Netflix and production company Cake to conjure short-form animated series Angry Birds: Summer Madness. Set to manifest in 2021 with 40-episodes at 11 minutes each, the series will continue to showcase the exploits of its game-inspired idiosyncratic avian projectiles, as depicted in its animated features, 2016’s The Angry Birds Movie and 2019 sequel The Angry Birds Movie 2. Indeed, the series will draw direct inspiration from the humor and tone of the films, but is also promising a fresh new look, as exemplified by a teaser image (seen in the article’s header).

The 40 x 11 minute episode series sees much-loved birds Red, Bomb and Chuck, as well as a cast of brand new feathered friends, as tween birds at summer camp under the questionable guidance of their counselor Mighty Eagle. Explosive antics, improbable pranks and crazy summertime adventures see the birds pushing boundaries and breaking all the rules while fending off the brash and obnoxious Pigs on the other side of the lake, who seem hell-bent on causing as much mayhem as possible!

Netflix is getting a decidedly big thing on March 20 when “Archibald’s Next Big Thing” Season 2 hits the streamer, and you can take a sneak peek at what’s in store below, where IndieWire is exclusively premiering the trailer.

No 2020 Oscar category can boast a higher level of quality — or diversity, for that matter — than the animated shorts, and though the five nominees are among the least-seen, film buffs would do well to track them down all the same. While the lack of women nominated for Best Director in this year’s Academy Awards has frustrated many people, the nominees for Best Animated Short Film provide a welcome alternative: Three of the five were directed by women, and a fourth features a woman nominee among its producers. That’s not the only way this year’s nominees differ from more prominent categories. The nominees hail from different countries, and they apply a vast array of animation styles and sensibilities nothing like the Best Animated Feature contenders, all of which were released by major studios.
However, the shorts do share a striking overlap of thematic concerns. While they range in length from just under seven minutes to just over 16, they all focus on complex family bonds and their intimate emotional impact on a small set of characters. The tones range from lighthearted to dark and tragic, but all of them...

At the age of nine, Brooklynn Prince has already done more than this writer ever has, and she’s only getting started in Hollywood. Prince enjoyed a breakout role in The Florida Project, has voiced characters for both The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part and The Angry Birds Movie 2, she also directs her own short films, and is now co-starring alongside Mackenzie Davis and Finn Wolfhard for The Turning, Floria Sigismondi’s adaptation of Henry James' The Turn of the Screw.
At the recent press day for The Turning, Daily Dead spoke with Prince about her filmmaking goals as well as her experiences working with her co-stars and directors for the project. Prince discussed how she wanted to turn the horror movie down, until she realized she’d be working alongside a certain cast member from Stranger Things, and how much she enjoyed her experiences working with Davis.

This summer, Luke Combs released a country-rocker called “Let’s Just Be Friends.” Featured on The Angry Birds Movie 2 soundtrack, the song begins with a political parable set-up that’ll scan as familiar to anyone who’s listened to country radio over the past few years.

And I live on the other
Why we don’t see eye-to-eye
Really ain’t no wonder
But you got the rock and I got the roll

No race for the animated feature Oscar has been as dominated by sequels since the category’s debut in 2001 as this year’s. Leading the conversation are big-studio front-runners “Toy Story 4,” “How to Train Your Dragon 3” and “Frozen 2.” Lower down the card, “Secret Life of Pets 2,” “The Lego Movie 2” and “Angry Birds 2” are also vying for a nomination — testing the Academy’s appetite in this category for sequels, which pose unique challenges for filmmakers.
“Sequels can definitely be a double-edged sword,” says “Toy Story 4” director Josh Cooley, who took the Oscar-winning franchise to new locales and added characters, as well as spotlighting Woody’s one-time love interest, Bo Peep. “There’s a world that’s already been established, the characters and tone have been established, but the difficulty is that you don’t want to just copy the same exact thing that’s been done before. With a sequel,...
