“House of Gucci” (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment) The legendary and legendarily vicious Gucci fashion empire gets the old-fashioned big movie treatment with Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, and Lady Gaga. Is it kind of ridiculous? Yes, but it’s also the reboot of “Dynasty” you never knew you wanted, one that’s best watched with a living room full of your rowdiest and most opinionated friends. Everyone in the movie is doing a variation on Italian-accented English, the settings are opulent, and Gaga is giving look after look after hat after hat and you will respect the wild, criminal duh-raaamaaa of it all.
Also Available:
“American Underdog” (Lionsgate) Zachary Levi stars as NFL champ Kurt Warner, who overcame multiple challenges and setbacks on the road to football glory.
“Apex” (Rlje Films) Bruce Willis must kill or be killed in order to escape prison.

Mark Wahlberg strides into theaters this weekend with Joe Bell as the Reinaldo Marcus Green film debuts on 1,093 screens supported by robust advertising and a star-driven social media campaign.
Roadside Attractions is distributing, having snapped up the film from Solstice Studios which acquired it off of a 2020 Toronto Film Festival premiere but was particularly hard hit by the pandemic and let it go. So much of what makes “Hacks” work is the chemistry between its two central characters, played by Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder. The HBO Max comedy hinges on the connection between these two seemingly disparate women So how did this pair find that connection? By lobbing insults at each other in the dark.
The very first interaction between comedians Deborah Vance (Smart) and Ava (Einbinder) in the pilot swiftly unravels into a sparring match. This moment — in which they brutally hurl barbs at each other, referencing everything from the Cheesecake Factory to Liberace — was so pivotal to establishing the duo’s relationship and setting up the entire premise of the series, that it became the audition scene for actors vying for the part of Ava.
As Smart recalls it, she and Einbinder first met in a “giant, empty, cold soundstage” and “sat about 30 feet apart during the scene.” Then at the end,...

Next month’s Tribeca Film Festival will close with a still-untitled documentary produced by comedian Dave Chappelle about the issues confronting a rural Ohio town in 2020.
The film is produced and directed by Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, who won an Oscar for American Factory.
Closing night will be held at Radio City Music Hall, capping off the first major North American festival to hold in-person screenings since the onset of Covid-19. The venue announced plans earlier this month to reopen in June at full capacity for those who have been vaccinated against the coronavirus. Almost all Tribeca screenings will occur outdoors in observance of safety protocols.
The documentary, making its world premiere, portrays the challenges facing a rural village in Ohio during the early days of the pandemic. It captures the emotional period of the Black Lives Matter movement and the remarkable leadership of the town’s youth who started weekly marches and rallies.

Cinema is a wonderful tool for showing us other lives. Stories that we enjoy on the big screen connect intimately to our understanding of our own lives and to the lives of others. The best films can be wish-fulfilment, they can throw us into unimaginable terror, or they can show us what we might do given the circumstances the film presents us with.
Many of these films feature a protagonist whose life at the beginning of the film is not too dissimilar to our own. How many of Hitchcock‘s great films use the premise of extraordinary things happening to ordinary people? And because of the way film works on us as an entertainment medium, there is a very real connection between our visceral reaction and what we see on screen.

President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground Productions, has set a slate of new projects under their deal with Netflix.
The new slate encompasses both TV and film projects, including a film adaptation of Mohsin Hamid’s critically-acclaimed novel “Exit West” and a biopic on Tenzing Norgay, who was the first person to reach the peak of Mount Everest alongside Sir Edmund Hillary. The company is also prepping a U.S. National Parks docuseries and a series adaptation of the Angeline Boulley book “Firekeeper’s Daughter.”
The full description of all the projects can be found below. They are currently in different stages of development, to be released over the next several years.
“We created Higher Ground to tell great stories,” the Obamas said. “This group of projects builds upon that goal and the incredible path forged by films like ‘Crip Camp,’ ‘Becoming,’ and the Oscar-winning ‘American Factory.

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history.Krzysztof Kieślowski once declared that “everybody’s life is worthy of scrutiny, has its secrets and dramas,” and these kinds of secrets and dramas were indeed at the heart of his assiduously affecting cinema. Applying the tactile textures of everyday objects and elements—recurrent motifs to advance a consistently generous formal construct—his poignant narratives support the fragility and inscrutability of human existence. As he delved deeply into the profound enigmas of characters at the proverbial crossroads of life, Kieślowski combined an observational detachment with the passionate expression of subjective intimacy, pushing past the inevitable sociopolitical surroundings that informed much of his early work and refining the more sensitive moments of self-reflection, ritual, and randomness, where precarious individual actions have comprehensive consequences.Born June 27, 1941, Kieślowski and his itinerant family moved throughout...

I've said it before and I'll say it again: horror works best as metaphor. When examining societal, personal, or political issues, the horror genre is like no other. Sci-fi comes close, but in my opinion, you can really explore a ton of amazing emotional and societal territory in horror, specifically with visual metaphors. A recent film that does this particularly well is Austrailan filmmaker Natalie Erika James' feature debut, Relic. Out this week in America from Shout! Factory's Scream Factory imprint, Relic is now available to have and to keep, preferably stored in the psychological horror section of your home library next to similarly-themed, family terror films such as The Witch, The Babadook, and Hereditary. Without giving anything...

Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, who won an Oscar for their last documentary American Factory are following it up with a breezy and informative archive-driven film highlighting the fight for women's equality in the workplace - a battle that the film makes clear is far from over.
The US 9to5 movement - which would go on to inspire the Jane Fonda comedy 9 to 5 - provides the film with a focal point as it zooms in as the Sixties ave way to the Seventies without any signs of improvement in terms of working pay and conditions for the women who made up 70% of that area's workforce. The situation in the office was a reflection of broader sexists attitudes in society. As one of the women interviewed here recalls her father telling her: "Girls who are walking encyclopaedias should remember that reference books are never taken out."

The Chalk Garden
Blu ray
1964 / 106 min. / 1:85:1
Starring Deborah Kerr, Hayley Mills, John Mills
Cinematography by Arthur Ibbetson
Directed by Ronald Neame
Julie Andrews thrived in the role of governess—even when pitted against the Nazis in The Sound of Music she found plenty of time for sing-alongs—the same for Mary Poppins where the greatest threat was Dick Van Dyke’s British accent. But Deborah Kerr was never so lucky in the job; as the tutor assigned to a pair of possibly possessed tykes in The Innocents, she struggled as much with her own demons as the children’s. She still hadn’t learned her lesson when she signed on as companion to a troubled child in 1964’s The Chalk Garden. Kerr’s presence, along with Hayley Mills, Dame Edith Evans, and Hayley’s dad John, may seem inviting, but beware—the production is in the heavy hands...

For more than a year and a half the documentary American Factory has been on the kind of awards run that dreams are made of.
It’s now in contention for three Emmys, earning nominations late last month for directing, cinematography and editing. At the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, where American Factory premiered, it won the documentary directing award for filmmaking couple Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert. In between the film claimed numerous honors, most notably the Oscar for Best Documentary.
One of the highlights of the Oscar experience, the filmmakers say, came in bonding with their fellow nominees.
“We were always together, this whole cadre. And we really got close to everybody,” Bognar tells Deadline, adding the camaraderie kept them grounded amid the dizzying spectacle of awards season. “There is a lot of insanity and I don’t think documentarians are used to it… Suddenly we’re dressing up and we’re going out.

We have an eclectic assortment of titles on tap for this week’s home media releases, including some Hammer Horror, a post-apocalyptic television series, several brilliant modern genre classics, and a handful of indie horror to boot. Mexico’s film industry appears healthy, but the question is for how long. In 2019, Mexican president Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador decimated festival funding. There’s a fear that, as the economy contracts, so will its tax credits, the main source of film sector finance, says Pimienta’s Nicolas Celis, a producer on “Roma.”
Such fears have seen the country’s top producers re-engineering operations: many, such as Piano, Woo Films, Pablo Cruz at Canana and El Estudio have moved into TV production. Some, such as Panorama, have launched more commercial, Ott platform-friendly slates.
Companies are also aiming to tap more regular international co-financing, such as Pimienta’s first-look deal with Exile and Endeavor Content, while Piano has expanded into Colombia and Germany and El Estudio has launched bases in Los Angeles and Madrid.
Above all, many are looking to produce with top talent inside and outside Mexico. Piano’s slate...

A Generation Kplus entry, “Las niñas” (Schoolgirls) is a coming-of-age story and a generational portrait of Spanish women who would now be in their forties.

The programme is based on the theme ‘Wounded’, with films that explore the unhealed wounds which arose during Taiwan’s period under martial law, and will cover a broad range of topical issues that are both particular to Taiwan and also speak to a global audience – including social media/technology, Lgbtq rights, racism, post-colonialism and cultural conflicts, mental health and climate catastrophe. Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer for Christian Petzold’s “Undine,” which world premieres in competition at the Berlin Film Festival. Petzold won the Silver Berlin Bear for best director for “Barbara” in 2012.
At the heart of “Undine,” set in modern-day Berlin, lies the Undine myth: a water nymph becomes human when she falls in love with a man. In the film, Undine (played by Paula Beer) is a historian lecturing on Berlin’s urban development. When the man she loves leaves her, the ancient myth about Undine catches up with her: she must kill the man who betrays her and return to the water.
Petzold’s recent films all had explicit historical or political backgrounds, but with “Undine” he has chosen a fairytale as his point of departure. However, the films are more similar than they may seem. Like “Barbara,” “Phoenix” and “Transit,” “Undine” is a story about love.

Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert still remember how they felt when they heard the news: It was 2014, and Fuyao, a Chinese company specializing in manufacturing glass for automobiles, announced plans to open a plant in the filmmakers’ economically depressed hometown of Dayton, Ohio. “It was really good news,” Reichert says by phone, pointing out that the rust-belt community was still reeling from the devastating closure of a General Motors plant in the wake of 2008’s Great Recession. That shuttering led to the loss of thousands of jobs. “[It] was a shock wave that was terrible.

Last year, “Free Solo” took home the Best Documentary Oscar, giving National Geographic its first Oscar win. Could the company make it two victories in a row?
Nat Geo, which produces documentaries under its National Geographic Documentary Films banner, has snagged a second straight nomination in the category with “The Cave.” From former Oscar nominee Feras Fayyad (“Last Man in Aleppo”), “The Cave” is pretty much the opposite of the daredevil adventures of Alex Honnold in “Free Solo,” but no less intense. It focuses on Dr. Amani Ballor, the first female hospital manager in war-torn Syria, except her hospital — the titular cave — is underground to hide from the unspeakable horrors going on above that floods the hospital with new patients by the hour.

After losing out three times in Oscar's best documentary category, American Factory co-director Julia Reichert is certainly ready to finally take home an Academy Award.
"I'll be real honest, it would be extremely meaningful after four nominations and my age and my state of life. It would be very meaningful," Reichert, who is undergoing chemotherapy as she battles terminal cancer at age 73, told THR. "There's no cure for what I have. And it could be six months, a year, or more."

While an all-male list of director contenders and a mostly white actors roster caught the eye of the diversity-conscious on Oscar nominations day, another blip signaled deep change within the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. That is, four out of five documentary feature nominees—The Cave, The Edge Of Democracy, For Sama, and Honeyland— came from outside the United States, and leaned heavily into foreign languages, including Arabic, Portuguese, Turkish, Macedonian, and Serbo-Croatian dialects. Meanwhile, the single largely American nominee—American Factory, from Netflix—featured a number of Chinese factory managers in Ohio, and communicated partly in Mandarin.
This is new, and not an accident.
In eight of the prior ten years, there were at least three nominated documentary features of U. S. origin, and never fewer than two. Even in 2013, when How To Survive A Plague and The Invisible War were the only American entries, the year...

When American Factory was announced on Monday as one of the five Oscar nominees for Best Documentary Feature, among the first to congratulate filmmakers Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert were Barack and Michelle Obama.
“Glad to see American Factory’s Oscar nod for Best Documentary,” the former president tweeted. “It’s the kind of story we don’t see often enough.” Mrs. Obama added in a tweet of her own, “So thrilled that Julia Reichert, Steven Bognar, and all of the incredible people behind #American Factory are nominated for the Best Documentary Oscar!”
The shoutouts were by no means random. The Obamas executive produced the film through their company Higher Ground Productions, which has a deal with Netflix. They came on board after the film premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, where Bognar and Reichert won the directing award for documentary.

After making some major strides last year, the nominations for the 92nd Annual Academy Awards are basically #OscarsSo WhitePart 2: #OscarsSoWhiterAndWithMoreMen, a sequel to the hashtag originated in 2015 by April Reign for the lack of diverse nominees. The Academy Awards took the non-inclusive torch that was carried by the BAFTA Awards and the Golden Globes. Only one actor of color were nominated in the major acting categories while women were shut out of Best Director. It was at least refreshing to see John Cho and Issa Rae unveil the nominations early Monday morning because they provided much-needed color to the announcement — both figuratively and literally.
