Federation Studios and Ananey Studios, Paramount’s Tel Aviv-based company, are joining forces to produce “Forever Shattered” (working title), an investigative documentary on the sexual crimes committed by Hamas during its Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

Exclusive: Topic Studios, the award-winning production company behind titles like Theater Camp and 100 Foot Wave, has laid off over 20 employees, multiple sources tell Deadline. Employees were notified on Tuesday, and we hear that almost all divisions are affected, with all of those working on the TV side being cut.
A company spokesperson emphasizes that despite changes being made when it comes to the small-screen arena, “Topic Studios continues to produce television programs. This week’s staff changes have not impacted the multiple scripted and non-scripted television projects in production and development. While our scripted television strategy will be evolving, we plan to increase investment in this area.”
The layoffs come at a time of general turbulence in entertainment, which is still reeling from last summer’s double strikes and the pandemic that preceded it. Other media companies hit with mass layoffs just recently include Amazon, Hallmark Media, Great American Media,...

The last cork has been popped and the final flute of Kirkland Signatures sparkling wine drained down to the last drop. Old Man 2023 has gathered his sash about his withered frame and slunk into the night, clearing the way for cherubic New Year 2024–giggly, chubby and brimming with promise.

But still: we all strive to make each new chapter in the Gregorian filing system a fresh start–a chance to break bad habits and begin good ones.
The traditional way of kickstarting these self-improvement reboots is through the maddeningly self-deceptive ritual of setting New Year’s Resolutions–80% of which are inevitably abandoned by February 1, according to most studies. Isabelle Adjani received a two-year suspended prison sentence and was fined €250,000 for tax fraud in a Paris court on Thursday, Variety has confirmed.
Adjani, one of France’s most revered female actors, was found guilty of setting up her permanent residency in Portugal between 2016 and 2017 to avoid paying €236,000 in taxes, depositing €120,000 into a U.S. account without declaring it and disguising a €2 million donation into a loan, per the Afp.
Adjani, who was Oscar-nominated for “Camille Claudel” and “The Story of Adele H.,” has denied these claims and will be filing an appeal, her lawyer, Olivier Pardo, told Variety.
Back in October, the financial prosecutors had requested a suspended sentence of 18 months on top of a €250,000 fine, but the judges gave Adjani a bigger sentence.
“We are dismayed by this ruling,” Pardo said. “Isabelle Adjani couldn’t attend the trial, and we had asked to reschedule it so that she...

With “Full Circle,” Steven Soderbergh once again immerses us in a multi-character crime caper. Typical of the director’s work, it’s intricate, obsessed with money, cognizant of sociopolitical realities and astute about human nature (if not super illuminating). This six-episode Max limited series is on the more serious end of the Soderbergh spectrum, “Traffic”-like rather than an “Ocean’s” romp, mousetrap-plotted as opposed to experimental. The overall effect is one of the smart, showy filmmaker doing donuts, but spinning the wheels of a well-tuned Escalade.
Written by Ed Solomon, who also provided the scripts for Soderbergh’s earlier mystery projects “Mosaic” and “No Sudden Move,” “Circle” transfers the basic idea of Akira Kurosawa’s procedural “High and Low” to a contemporary New York City with a much denser population of key characters. A scheme to kidnap the son of a wealthy family gets royally and morally screwed up...

"What makes you think the world is going to get better??" Apple has revealed an official trailer for a new near-future series called Extrapolations, from writer Scott Z. Burns. I wouldn't call this sci-fi, because it's much more sci-real, a vitally important and scary look at what's going to happen when climate change really takes over. The series features "unanticipated stories of how the upcoming changes to our planet will affect love, faith, work and family on a personal and human scale." It's written by and showrun by the same guy who wrote the scripts for The Informant, Contagion, Side Effects, The Mercy, and The Laundromat, so he definitely knows what he's talking about here. "Are we brave enough to become the solution to our own undoing before it’s too late?" The series features a massive ensemble cast: Meryl Streep, Sienna Miller, Kit Harington, Daveed Diggs, Edward Norton, Diane Lane,...

Kimi (2021)There’s a vital undercurrent to recent mainstream American cinema in the form of Steven Soderbergh’s tireless, unassuming productivity.Soderbergh is no stranger to success—either critical or commercial—nor to the upper echelons of studio filmmaking, and yet in the early 2010s he made a shift to a more unassuming way of working. The trigger was a larger, long-gestating seachange across the cinema landscape. The major American studios increasingly turned away from producing a variety of movies, of various sizes, types and expectations, and made fewer films but with ballooning costs and so little leeway for artistic risk. While put out by this great shake-up, Soderbergh embraced another: the medium’s mass digitization. His response has been to stay away from blockbuster projects but also to avoid making work that would obviously comply with the grinds and ploys known as “festival circuit” or “award season,” even if...

Steven Soderbergh is one of the few commercial American directors who makes films about money—stealing it, lacking it, and its intersection with sex, power, culture, and politics. He’s a filmmaker who’s keenly aware of the reasons why some have money and many others don’t. He knows what it says about a person and where they fit on the capitalist hierarchy. His genre obsessions make these ideas go down smoothly, sometimes almost deceptively so, but there’s genuine indignation at the inequity of it all combined with honest compassion for those stuck on the losing side of the system. It’s too easy to say his films are just metaphors for life in America, though that’s certainly a part of it. It’s more honest to say he places seekers and thieves in the center of his films because, at least in art, they demand focus and control the action.

Meryl Streep celebrated her 72nd birthday this week, but it was Sharon Stone a lot of people were talking about on social media. An interview from Everything Zoomer published in late May 2021 went viral for featuring Stone’s frank thoughts on Streep. While Stone called Streep an “amazingly wonderful woman and actress,” she warned against the industry’s idolization of the three-time Oscar winner. It all started when the interviewer mentioned that Stone “finally” got to work with Streep in Steven Soderbergh’s “The Laundromat.”
“I like the way you phrase that, that I finally got to work with Meryl Streep,” Stone said. “You didn’t say, ‘Meryl finally got to work with Sharon Stone.’ Or we finally got to work together…Because that’s the way her life went, she got built up to be, ‘Everyone wants to work with Meryl.’ I wonder if she likes that?”

Forget it, Jake — it’s late-stage capitalism. Director Steven Soderbergh has been following the money throughout his career, going at least as far back as the “Ocean’s” movies, where financial institutions take a hit at the hands of the strivers and scrabblers. Since returning from his “retirement” from movies, he’s offered stories as disparate as “High Flying Bird,” which suggests the possibility of labor wresting control from management, and “The Laundromat,” a messy exposé of shell companies and offshore tax shelters that at least tries to gin up audience outrage over a seemingly unsolvable dilemma.
Now he’s back with “No Sudden Move,” which allows the director to revel in his love for dark comedy, criminal capers, period detail, and all-star ensembles, and while all of those elements make the film entertaining, the story ultimately feels like a hopeless recitation of doom: The rich and powerful will always be rich and powerful.

NBC is stepping back into Night Court.
The network has handed out a pilot order to a sequel series of the '80s comedy series, with The Big Bang Theory's Melissa Rauch set to lead.
"Unapologetic optimist judge Abby Stone (series star Melissa Rauch), the daughter of the late Harry Stone, follows in her father's footsteps as she presides over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding (series star John Larroquette)," reads the official logline.
Yes, John Larroquette is set to return to the series, which he won four consecutive Emmys for from 1985-1988.
"My intention was purely to be behind the camera on this project, but my plans quickly changed after falling in love with the incredible script from the brilliant mind of Dan Rubin," said Rauch.

NBC has given a pilot order to Night Court, a follow-up to the classic legal comedy series, starring The Big Bang Theory’s Melissa Rauch and the original series’ co-star John Larroquette, reprising his Emmy-winning role.
Written/executive produced by Dan Rubin based on the original series created by Reinhold Weege, the multi-camera Night Court centers on unapologetic optimist judge Abby Stone (Rauch), the daughter of the late Harry Stone, who follows in her father’s footsteps as she presides over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding (Larroquette).
Melissa Rauch and Winston Rauch executive produce via their After January production company; Larroquette is a producer. After January produces in association with Warner Bros. Television, which was also the studio behind the original series, and Universal Television.

Exclusive: The new Night Court has set up a dream leading duo. The follow-up to the classic legal comedy series, which has been heating up for a pilot order at NBC for several weeks, will star Melissa Rauch and the original series’ co-star John Larroquette, reprising his Emmy-winning role, I have learned.
This marks the first post-The Big Bang Theory TV role for Rauch, the driving force behind the reboot, who initially was only set to executive produce for Warner Bros TV but decided to take on the lead role after reading the script, I hear. Reps for NBC and Wbtv declined comment.
