Last August, we heard that Imagine Entertainment had picked up the film rights to Daniel Kraus’s “swallowed by a whale” thriller novel Whalefall (you can buy a copy at This Link) and now Deadline has a cool update on the project: 20th Century Studios has come out the winner in a bidding war over the Whalefall theatrical distribution rights, and Brian Duffield – who recently worked with 20th Century on the alien invasion film No One Will Save You – has signed on to co-write, direct, and produce the film.
Duffield is working on the screenplay with Kraus, and here’s the story they’ll be bringing to the screen: Jay Gardiner has given himself a fool’s errand – to find the remains of his deceased father in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Monastery Beach. He knows it’s a long shot, but Jay feels it’s the only...

[The following story contains spoilers for No One Will Save You.]
During an uneventful weekend at the domestic box office, Brian Duffield’s alien invasion thriller No One Will Save You became the talk of social media. The Hulu release, which features virtually no dialogue, is another critical win for Duffield following his critically acclaimed directorial debut, Spontaneous, and it’s even received Guillermo Del Toro and Stephen King‘s stamps of approval.
The Kaitlyn Dever-led sci-fi film begins with the high concept of an alien home invasion, but eventually widens its scope into something more affecting on a character level. Dever’s Brynn Adams accidentally killed her 12-year-old best friend a decade earlier, and her small-town community of Mill River has turned her into persona non grata ever since, resulting in a life of alienation inside her late mother’s home.

"No One Will Save You" arrives on Hulu this weekend, and it's a meticulously crafted, original sci-fi movie with plenty of twists and turns. The film comes from director/writer Brian Duffield, who may not be a household name, but he's written the script for some low-key great genre movies like "Underwater" with Kristen Stewart, "Love & Monsters" with Dylan O'Brien, and "The Babysitter" films on Netflix. Plus, he directed the acclaimed dark romantic comedy "Spontaneous," which you should seek out immediately if you haven't seen it.
With "No One Will Save You," Duffield delivers a suspenseful sci-fi thriller with Kaitlyn Dever playing a character who is suddenly caught in the middle of an alien invasion of her small town. What's even more impressive than the thrills and mysteries that drive the movie is the fact that it's executed with practically zero dialogue. Funnily enough, that kinda happened by accident.

Spoiler Alert: The following review contains spoilers.
Got trauma? A global alien invasion is all it takes for emotionally scarred Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever) to sort through her issues in “No One Will Save You,” an extraterrestrial creature feature cut from the same cloth as M. Night Shyamalan’s “Signs,” where the jump scares are secondary to an earnest (but far less effective) portrait of coping with guilt and grief.
Building on the novelty value of 2020 debut “Spontaneous” (in which a bunch of teenagers inexplicably start to pop like pimples), director Brian Duffield sets multiple creative challenges for himself and mostly succeeds — well enough to attract eyeballs to this buzz-worthy Hulu release, at least. Amusingly enough, one of the things liable to get people talking is Duffield’s decision to construct the film with hardly any dialogue.
Brynn’s a loner, living in a house that looks like it was decorated by a 12-year-old girl.

There have been plenty of home invasion movies. And there have been plenty of alien invasion movies. So it only seems logical that there would eventually be an alien home invasion movie. Writer-director Brian Duffield has delivered just that with his sci-fi suspenser featuring Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart, Dopesick) in a virtually solo, virtually silent performance as a young woman battling a formidable array of extraterrestrials who are definitely not of the cute and cuddly E.T. variety. Premiering on Hulu to provide scares through Halloween, No One Will Save You proves a singularly intense experience.
So intense, in fact, that it’s a shame that it’s been relegated to streaming. Deeply dependent on its imaginative sound effects, powerful visuals and nerve-jangling score by Joseph Trapanese, the film would benefit greatly from immersive theatrical viewing.

“No One Will Save You” beams onto Hulu on Friday, and if you aren’t already in a spooky autumnal mood, this should do the trick.
While much of the power of the film is derived from knowing as preciously little about it as possible, we can say that the movie is the story of Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever), a young woman living alone in the woods, who gets some unwelcome (and otherworldly) visitors. From there it’s a nonstop roller-coaster ride, with writer/director Brian Duffield toggling between the existential dread of Brynn’s past and her very urgent need to survive this terror.
TheWrap spoke to Duffield about where “No One Will Save You” came from, what it was like working with Dever and whether he’s ready to jump onto a preestablished franchise. Minor spoiler warning, of course.
What made you want to create the ultimate alien abduction movie?...

For those who watched Dan Trachtenberg‘s amazing Predator prequel Prey on Hulu last summer, you are in for another terrific sci-fi film.
Hulu is streaming No One Will Save You on Sept. 22, 2023, in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America, and Disney+ in all other territories.
An Invasion Is Imminent, according to Brian Duffield, who wrote and directed 20th Century Studios’ “No One Will Save You,” a sci-fi psychological thriller told through the eyes of a lonely young woman with a painful backstory. “I wanted the movie to take the lead of a small intimate character study and drop an alien invasion on top of them,” says Duffield. “The end of the world won’t only be for those that are ready for it, and the idea of an alien movie rudely bursting the bubble our character has spent years building and cultivating felt like a unique way to tell a favorite story.

The trailer for 20th Century Studios’ No One Will Save You kicks off with a home invasion of a different sort. The intruder announces its presence with a growl, confirming there’s something inhuman entering the house. And rather than draw out the tease, the trailer wraps up with a quick shot of the alien invader.
Writer/director Brian Duffield follows up his directorial debut Spontaneous with this sci-fi thriller, which focuses on the alien invasion through the eyes of a young woman named Brynn.

The new trailer for No One Will Save You, from writer/filmmaker Brian Duffield (Spontaneous, Love and Monsters), has arrived this morning ahead of its Hulu premiere on September 22. And it looks absolutely intense.
Starring Kaitlyn Dever, the sci-fi psychological thriller plunges an anxiety-ridden homebody into a nonstop nightmare when aliens invade her home. The trailer teases a variety of alien invaders, including perhaps a few of the human variety, with the scares bolstered by a chillingly effective sound design.
Bloody Disgusting exclusively spoke with Duffield ahead of the trailer’s debut to learn what audiences can expect, from the movie’s tone to the aliens themselves.
“The trailer’s not far off from the movie. It is aggressive and tense, and there are moments of levity, but they’re few and far between. It’s a pretty lean and mean movie,” Duffield tells Bloody Disgusting of how accurately the trailer captures his film.

One of this year’s Halloween treats from Hulu is the alien invasion horror movie No One Will Save You, and one hell of a first-look trailer has just been unleashed this afternoon.
No One Will Save You was written and directed by Brian Duffield, the writer of the films Underwater and Love & Monsters, as well as the writer/director of Spontaneous.
Duffield tells Bloody Disgusting, “One of the things that I’m really excited about is that [the trailer] hides two of the big hooks or twists of the movie that audiences will realize very quickly into watching the movie. The other fun thing that the trailer does is that it gives a lot of glimpses of aliens. Our movie, to be pretty blunt about it, when they walk in, eight minutes in, there’s very little hide and seek. It’s not 90 minutes of hide and seek. The movie, especially...

About fifteen months ago, we heard that 20th Century Studios had acquired the rights to a psychological thriller called No One Will Save You, which would be written and directed by Brian Duffield and had Booksmart (watch it Here) star Kaitlyn Dever attached to star in it. A show like “Skull Island” usually gets bogged down by demands and expectations. The new animated Netflix series isn’t about King Kong, but the big fella definitely makes his presence known.
Given that this eight-episode season exists within a broader umbrella that also encompasses kaiju of all kinds, you’d expect that series creator and showrunner Brian Duffield would have to wade through an ocean of demands and limitations. Instead, writing “Skull Island” became a chance to focus on a new batch of explorers who find themselves on Kong’s home island and discover otherworldly creatures dotting its beaches and forests.
Duffield said that his experience on “Skull Island” wasn’t hampered by the usual meddling and franchise maintenance preciousness that we’ve come to associate with high-profile shows that have become brand extensions, regardless of what medium they’re presented. That Legendary Television and Netflix’s animated series “Skull Island” comes from creator/writer/executive producer Brian Duffield makes perfect sense. The writer behind Underwater, Love and Monsters, and Spontaneous has already established an affinity for larger-than-life monsters, a sense of adventure, and an uncanny knack for tugging at the heartstrings in the process. All three of those elements capture the essence of the monstrously sized yet tender-hearted King Kong, and they’re at the core of “Skull Island,” a lighthearted standalone series that goes big on nonstop monster mayhem.
“Skull Island” hits the ground running with an action-heavy sequence introducing wild teen Annie (Mae Whitman) as she evades her gun-toting captors from a sea vessel. As the military-like bunch pursues Annie to shore, another group of erstwhile researchers and adventurers also wash ashore when a massive cephalopod-like creature capsizes their boat. The survivors all find themselves on the treacherous Skull Island.

It is still early in 2023, but several movies have already left quite the impression on moviegoers, such as Blumhouse's killer doll flick "M3GAN" and M. Night Shyamalan's latest thriller "Knock at the Cabin." But perhaps the craziest movie of the year is hitting theaters soon: "Cocaine Bear."
Directed by Elizabeth Banks ("Pitch Perfect 2"), the film is actually loosely based on a true story of a bear that, as the title implies, ingested a ton of cocaine. What could possibly go wrong? The movie has an absolutely stacked A-list cast led by the likes of Keri Russell and Ray Liota, in one of his final performances. As for the specifics of it, the synopsis for the film reads as follows:

Cinematography retrospectives are the way to go—more than a thorough display of talent, it exposes the vast expanse a Dp will travel, like an education in form and business all the same. Accordingly I’m happy to see the Criterion Channel give a 25-film tribute to James Wong Howe, whose career spanned silent cinema to the ’70s, populated with work by Howard Hawks, Michael Curtz, Samuel Fuller, Alexander Mackendrick, Sydney Pollack, John Frankenheimer, and Raoul Walsh.
Further retrospectives are granted to Romy Schneider (recent repertory sensation La piscine among them), Carlos Saura (finally a chance to see Peppermint frappe!), the British New Wave, and groundbreaking distributor Cinema 5, who brought to U.S. shores everything from The Man Who Fell to Earth and Putney Swope to Pumping Iron and Scenes from a Marriage.
September also yields streaming premieres for the recently restored Bronco Bullfrog, Ang Lee’s Pushing Hands,...

Universal Pictures will release the new film “Cocaine Bear” on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023 in theaters wide, the studio announced on Monday.
Wild as it may seem, the film is inspired by the 1985 true story of a drug runner’s plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it. Per the official synopsis, the thriller finds an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500- pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fueled rampage for more blow… and blood.
Elizabeth Banks directed “Cocaine Bear” from a screenplay by Jimmy Warden (“The Babysitter 2: Killer Queen”). The cast includes Keri Russell, Margo Martindale, Ray Liotta, Alden Ehrenreich, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Kristofer Hivju (“Game of Thrones”), Kahyun Kim (“American Gods”), Christian Convery (“Sweet Tooth”), Brooklynn Prince (“The Florida Project”) and newcomer Scott Seiss.

The screenwriter behind the films "Jane Got a Gun," "Love and Monsters," "Underwater," and "The Babysitter," Brian Duffield made something truly magical with his explosive 2020 directorial feature debut, "Spontaneous." Adapted from Aaron Starmer's book of the same name, "Spontaneous" is a coming-of-age romantic black comedy horror film about a girl named Mara Carlyle (Katherine Langford) whose friends and classmates begin spontaneously combusting. Knowing that any moment could be her last, Mara begins living life as she sees fit, which includes starting a romance with the adorable Dylan (Charlie Plummer of "The Clovehitch Killer" and "Words on Bathroom Walls"). As their romance grows, Mara and...

A young couple ponders life’s biggest questions of vows, adulthood, love and … “would you ever consider an open thing?” Check out the exclusive trailer debut for the charming romantic comedy “Mark, Mary & Some Other People” above.
Hayley Law and Ben Rosenfield play the titular characters who reconnect after college. The duo begins dating and winds up swiftly falling in love and getting hitched (according to the trailer and by “Eastbound & Down’s” Steve Little no less!). As their whirlwind love story moves forward Mary suggests the possibility of exploring ethical non-monogamy. The decision changes things for the couple and opens a lot of personal questions for both as Mary starts to realize she’s more traditional than she thought whereas Mark starts to open up and see the world differently through Mary and a polyamorous lens.
Written and directed by Hannah Marks, the director was excited to film in her hometown.

And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

In a year when everything felt like it was falling apart, it was nice to have one constant in my life to get me through 2020: genre entertainment. Even though we saw many theatrical films get pushed to 2021, we were still lucky enough to have a wealth of horror and sci-fi content released throughout last year, whether it was digitally, or in some cases, at various drive-in theaters around the country. And while we may have missed out on getting to see iconic characters like Michael Myers or Candyman make their return to multiplexes in 2020, those delays allowed for a number of indie films to get their moment in the spotlight last year, which I feel was like a silver lining to this whole mess that our country has been in for the last 10 or so months.

After selling off a half-dozen titles to Amazon and Netflix, “Love and Monsters” is one of the few Paramount Pictures titles to receive a 2020 theatrical release. It’s not much of a release — 387 theaters this weekend, for $255,000 — but its PVOD performance (at $19.99) may suggest why Paramount chose to hold on to it.
Scheduled pre-covid for theatrical release April 17, “Love and Monsters” (original title: “Monster Problems”) is no. 1 at both Apple TV and FandangoNow. Budgeted at $30 million, this adventure comedy led by”Maze Runner” and “Teen Wolf” star Dylan O’Brien, is not unlike “Zombieland” in its use of a young hero fighting off monsters in a dystopian society.
It’s the only new PVOD title this week, so it’s unsurprising to see its high placement at FandangoNow, which ranks its charts by revenue. Still, it beat out “Mulan,” which costs $29.99. More impressive: It leads at Apple TV, which ranks by number of transactions,...

Katherine Langford has yet to miss in her young career.
The Australian actor already has a mighty impressive resume that includes two hit Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why and Cursed, as well as two esteemed films in Knives Out and Love, Simon. In her latest return to the screen, Langford stars in Brian Duffield’s Spontaneous, a high-concept sci-fi comedy that is currently registering a 97% score among Rotten Tomatoes critics.
Spontaneous focuses on Langford’s Mara and her budding relationship with Charlie Plummer’s Dylan. The catch is that their love story begins amid a rising pandemic involving spontaneously exploding teenagers at their high school. Even though the film was shot in early 2018, the film has direct parallels to the novel coronavirus pandemic, something none of the creatives could have seen coming.
“In terms of the relevancy, no one could’ve imagined how this would hit when we made it three years ago,...

Even though the film was shot in early 2018, the film has direct parallels to the novel coronavirus pandemic, something none of the creatives could have seen coming.
“In terms of the relevancy, no one could’ve imagined how this would hit when we made it three years ago,...

When they set out to film the new horror-comedy Spontaneous - a satirical coming-of-age story about a strange pandemic that causes high school students to spontaneously combust - Katherine Langford and Charlie Plummer had no idea the film would resonate as deeply as it does now.
This was one of the many things they shared when we virtually sat down with the cast to talk about their new film, which somehow strikes the perfect balance between being both hilarious and deeply moving. The duo shared behind-the-scenes moments from the set, including what it was like to film so many outrageous scenes with fake blood . . .
. . . and what their favorite moments were to shoot.
Check out more set secrets in the video above, and watch Spontaneous, available now on demand!

For his directorial debut, Brian Duffield takes on senior year in high school with Spontaneous, his genre-bending teen comedy that follows a group of students who might spontaneously combust at any moment, with Katherine Langford’s character Mara at the center of it all (you can read my review Here).
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to chat with Duffield about Spontaneous, and how Aaron Starmer’s novel of the same name initially hooked him years prior. Duffield also discussed the challenges of nailing the film’s complex tonal shifts throughout, collaborating with Langford on the project and more.
Spontaneous is currently playing select theaters and is also available to rent digitally as well, courtesy of Paramount Pictures.
Between Underwater and Spontaneous being out this year, and then there’s Love and Monsters coming up too, all things considered, you are having a pretty okay year. So congrats on everything,...

Being a teen in high school is tough business. Hormones are going wild. Drama between friends is earth-shattering. Picking out the clothes you’re going to wear is a decision that would make Calvin Klein melt into a puddle of anxiety and fear. And the worst part? Your parents, they just don’t understand. Now, if you were to add a threat of your whole body randomly popping like a bloody pimple, you can understand why Mara just can’t take it anymore in the new film, “Spontaneous,” a surprisingly sweet, funny, and horrifically timely teen rom-com.

As far as teen-centric dark comedies go, Spontaneous is easily one of the best I’ve seen in years. Based on Aaron Starmer’s novel of the same name, this adaptation of Spontaneous from Brian Duffield perfectly captures the high school experience—particularly senior year, when students are filled with so much hope, but also are contending with a great deal of uncertainty about what the future holds as they are being thrust into adulthood—and delivers up an experience that’s wildly unpredictable and exciting, but also horrifying and heartbreaking all the same.
In Spontaneous, we are introduced to Maya Carlyle (Katherine Langford), a smart and confident high school senior whose world is rocked when, during class, one of her fellow students inexplicably explodes. From there, more of Maya’s peers end up combusting out of nowhere, causing a great deal of panic in the school and the community.

One of the most fascinating things about viewing new movies in the age of Covid is how many of them tap into current anxieties in spite of having been completed before the coronavirus arrived; films as varied in style, budget, and genre as I’m Thinking of Ending Things, She Dies Tomorrow and Tenet all resonate in this historical moment in ways that would have been very different–and probably less effective–if they had been released just a few months earlier. Screenwriter Brian Duffield’s strikingly original and extremely moving teen comedy Spontaneous is the latest film to speak to the persistent unease and […]...
