The renaissance of “Doctor Who,” which started its latest season this week, is a 20-year journey that is entwined with the establishment of a thriving TV production scene in South Wales, where it shoots, and the meteoritic rise of the production company Bad Wolf.
This dates back to 2003 when writer Russell T Davies was asked by the BBC’s then head of drama, Jane Tranter, to revive the show and to base the production in South Wales, an area hitherto known for coal mining and heavy industry. It was produced in 2004, overseen by BBC Wales head of drama, Julie Gardner.
When Tranter and Gardner relocated to Los Angeles to lead BBC Worldwide Productions and Adjacent Productions, they produced “Da Vinci’s Demons” for Starz, and again located the production in South Wales.
In 2015, Tranter and Gardner set up Bad Wolf, which takes its name from an episode of “Doctor Who,” and...

The Disney+ era of "Star Wars" has by all accounts been a mixed bag, but upcoming murder mystery series "The Acolyte" seems like a promising addition to the universe's canon for a few key reasons. Among them is its dynamic and ambitious action, which has been hyped in pre-release press and is briefly on display in the show's first trailer. In it, warriors draw their lightsabers against an unseen force in the forest, two fighters face off in a wuxia-inspired showdown, and at one point a character even pulls a knife -- a rarity in this world of Force and saber-driven violence.
The "Acolyte" cast has admitted that one of the saga's most famous fights, the showdown between Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul in the imperfect yet vital prequel "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," was both a reference point during production and a bar they...

Get ready to play a very different kind of Easter egg hunt with the new "Star Wars" series "The Acolyte" (watch the trailer here). Leslye Headland's upcoming series takes place 100 years before "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," which should come as a soothing balm to those who've been waiting for the franchise to move far (far) away from the Skywalker Saga and explore other periods of "Star Wars" history in live-action. That being the case, the real test here won't be seeing how many references or nods to other "Star Wars" projects you can spot; it will be figuring out where you've previously seen the show's crackerjack actors.
With the exceptions of "The Matrix" icon Carrie-Anne Moss and up-and-coming whipper-snappers Amandla Stenberg ("Bodies Bodies Bodies") and Dafne Keen ("His Dark Materials"), much of the "Acolyte" cast is composed of "Hey, I know them!" type character actors.

Sometimes, it’s easy to forget the world is a beautiful place filled with unimaginable beauty and wonders beneath every shadow, racing riverbed, and endless sky. We need to remember how nature came first and what the world could look like if it were to retake its course. Thankfully, Dreamworks Animation‘s The Wild Robot trailer reminds us of Mother Nature’s grand and beguiling majesty, even if that vision is through the eyes of a character made of metal and wires.
The Wild Robot is an adaptation of Peter Brown’s award-winning #1 New York Times best-seller. The series has three books: The Wild Robot, The Wild Robot Escapes, and The Wild Robot Protects. The story follows a robot – Rozzum unit 7134, “Roz” for short – that becomes shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must adapt to its new surroundings to survive. Throughout Rozzum’s epic journey, the curious automaton forms relationships with woodland creatures,...

Exclusive: And then there were three. As Deadline reported exclusively earlier this month, the field of writers in the running to adapt Jk Rowling’s Harry Potter books into a live-action series for Max has been narrowed down to three finalists. We can now reveal their names — according to sources, they are Francesca Gardiner, Tom Moran and Kathleen Jordan. The trio will be able to hone in on their pitches for the next couple of months, with a decision on who gets the job expected in June, we hear. As Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced last week, the Harry Potter series is slated to debut on Max in 2026.
Reps for Max and the studio behind the series, Warner Bros. Television, declined to comment.
Gardiner, Moran and Jordan are among the names of writers in contention reported exclusively by Deadline over the past month.

Prepare to board the train to Hogwarts as the Harry Potter live-action series reboot may have zeroed in on its showrunner, as this recent report alludes. Previously, several names were being thrown into the mix, and it was believed Succession writer Francesca Gardiner was shortlisted as one of the finalists who’d be in the running to snag the role of the upcoming show’s creative leader.
This latest scoop, though, affirms that Warner Bros. may have settled on a clear winner to spearhead the adaptation, and it could indeed be Gardiner.

The Harry Potter television series is closer to naming its creative leader as Deadline understands that the shortlist is now down to three names.
We hear that Succession writer Francesca Gardiner is now among the finalists to score the job of adapting Jk Rowling’s books for the Max streaming platform. It’s understood that Gardiner is now one of three writers currently being considered to lead Harry and his pals on the small screen.
A decision is expected soon. Max and Warner Bros. Television declined to comment.
Gardiner has emerged after Deadline revealed last month that there were four other writers in contention: Martha Hillier, Kathleen Jordan, Tom Moran and Michael Lesslie. It’s not clear which of these writers are still involved.

All good (and lesser) shows must come to an end, and here is Deadline’s photo gallery of TV series that have been canceled in 2023. Click on the image above to view the pics.
Spanning broadcast, cable and streaming, the list also includes some programs that were canceled in 2022 but have wrapped or are ending their runs this year. Those include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Star Trek: Picard, A Million Little Things, New Amsterdam, Riverdale, The Flash, Snowfall, Servant, His Dark Materials, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and and Stranger Things — unless the latter’s two-part final season ends up bleeding into 2024. And if so, this gallery also will have any shows whose cancellation is announced this year but aren’t ending until after the last calendar page turns on 2023 — or 2024. Semantically, it also includes shows that are being billed as “ended” vs. canceled.

Exclusive: The Stranger Things stage show, an unbelievably brilliant new blueprint for theatricality that premieres in London’s West End tonight, will be the first installment in a trilogy exploring the dark underbelly of Hawkins, Indiana.
Breaking Baz can reveal that parts two and three are set to follow the inaugural play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, in two- or three-year intervals, according to insiders associated with the production. The stage sequels will launch in London first.
Meanwhile, there are already plans for Stranger Things: The First Shadow to transfer to Broadway.
None of that’s official yet, of course. Producers and backers will study reviews out on Friday and across the weekend and the box office receipts before green-lighting any further productions.

The elusive feature adaptation of Paulo Coelho’s popular novel The Alchemist has gone from lead to gold — again.
Legendary Entertainment has secured the film, TV and ancillary rights to develop a feature based on the classic novel, with TriStar Pictures on board to release. Jack Thorne — whose film credits include Enola Holmes and The Swimmers — is attached to write the feature adaptation of a popular 1988 novel that has seen a road to the big screen as winding as the traveler’s philosophical journey in the book.
Laurence Fishburne had wanted to develop Coelho’s best-selling book for 16 years after acquiring the film rights from Warner Bros. Pictures with the intent of making the movie themselves. Warners acquired author Coelho’s book — about a traveler journeying the world during the Inquisition in order to find man’s purpose in the world — in 2003 as a Fishburne vehicle.
In 2008, The Weinstein Co.

With the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and representatives of Hollywood studios and streamers reaching a tentative deal on a new contract late Sunday, international reactions started pouring in Monday.
Among the groups chiming in on the development was the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (Wggb). “We send our congratulations to our sister union in the States on reaching a tentative agreement with the AMPTP,” Wggb chair Lisa Holdsworth said in a statement. “In the past 146 days we’ve seen an extraordinary show of solidarity from writers and their union siblings on both sides of the Atlantic, and indeed around the world. We’ve been overwhelmed by the response of our own membership in standing with their striking colleagues overseas — you have followed the WGA strike rules to the letter, turned out to the Wggb protest in London in the summer and sent a tsunami of support on social media.
