Discord redeemed
Had very mixed expectations before watching "Dungeons and Discords". Generally love Discord as a character and consider him one of the funniest supporting characters, ever since he was introduced in the Season 2 premiere. And then Season 5's "What About Discord?", a show low-point, happened and his character writing in that episode was so off putting and enough for a person that loved him before to be put off by him. Which is not a nice thing to feel.
It was to my relief that "Dungeons and Discords" was a great episode, one of the better ones of an uneven Season 6, and actually saw the show redeeming itself with Discord and bringing him back to his roots and the personality that we love. Is "Dungeons and Discords" a flawless episode? No, none of Season 6's episodes are. It is though a massive improvement over "What About Discord?", sees him on form, is one of Season 6's funniest and Spike plays a great role here.
The Mane 6 admittedly are underused, when they appear they are fine and in character but their little character moments for my tastes are not enough. Not every joke lands too, Discord's way of shocking Spike and Big Mac is more silly and mean than funny.
"Dungeons and Discords" is great otherwise. After being so turned off by Discord in "What About Discord?", it was a relief to me to see him back to his very funny self and he is enormously entertaining much of the time. A vast majority of his material ranging between very funny to hilarious. John DeLancie clearly enjoyed voicing him. The other standout in a good way was Spike. Of all the regular characters in Season 6, Spike was by far the most improved in character writing and also the most consistent, whereas the Mane 6 had both good and bad appearances (Rainbow Dash fared worst in this regard), Spike stood out whenever he appeared and all his Season 6 episodes where he is the main focus have been among his best and among the season's best as well. It was great to see him as the voice of reason and the one too to tell it like it is, voicing what the viewers are all thinking.
Loved Fluttershy too in the episode, with some striking little things like as as little as a raise of an eyebrow. Again, every character is fine but the screen time length does vary and would have liked to have seen most used more. The animation is bright and colourful with the backgrounds clearly made with care and ambition. The music is full of character and wide range of colours. The writing is witty and smart and the story always engrosses. The climax may not be as light-hearted as the rest of the episode but Spike's honesty is admirable here. The voice acting is great all round, especially from DeLancie and it is another great episode for Cathy Weseluk.
In conclusion, great and sees Discord back on form. 9/10.
