The cave scenes were shot in a warehouse in Brooklyn. Rather than building an artificial cave, Böhm utilized a large blue screen and integrated the cave background digitally.
Principal photography comprised only 23 days with generally no overtime. According to the director Fritz Bohm, he and his DP Toby Oliver averaged between 50 and 65 setups per day while maximizing set times for child actors, animals and water scenes.
In her role as Anna the lead actress Bel Powley eats sausages and hamburgers in various scenes throughout the film, despite being a vegetarian.
