When Fred Rogers Prods. execs decided to revisit the classic “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” character Donkey Hodie in a modern puppet show for preschoolers, they knew just the team with the storytelling and puppeteering chops to bring the project to life: brothers Adam and David Rudman, the team behind Chicago-based Spiffy Pictures.
David Rudman is a Muppeteer who has played Cookie Monster on “Sesame Street” and Scooter, Janice and Beaker on “The Muppet Show,” and Adam Rudman is an Emmy-winning writer, whose credits include “Sesame Street,” “Tom & Jerry” and “Scooby-Doo.” They are co-creators and executive producers of “Donkey Hodie,” which premiered on PBS stations May 3.

You don’t have to be perpetually “live, from New York” to flourish these days at “Saturday Night Live.”
In years past, the show’s cast members focused their all on the venerable late-night program and, when outside opportunity knocked or contracts ran out or media economics forced a tightening of the group, they left. This season has provided the clearest indication yet that those rules are changing: cast members are increasingly taking on new projects even as they continue with the NBC show.
On Thursday, HBO Max will launch a six-episode comedy-sketch series led by Michael Che, who also happens to be one of the head writers at “SNL” and a co-host of the program’s long-running “Weekend Update” segment. “That Damn Michael Che” will feature appearances by other “SNL” cast members, including Cecily Strong, Heidi Gardner and Colin Jost. Classic characters from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” are being reimagined in the new children’s series “Donkey Hodie” from Fred Rogers Productions and Spiffy Pictures that premieres today, Monday, May 3, on PBS.
The series follows the original puppet’s precocious namesake granddaughter whose big ideas sometimes get the best of her, but, with the help of Grampy and her friends, she learns to keep on trying. Each half-hour episode features two 11-minute stories.
The idea for the show started with the folks at Fred Rogers Productions. “We were looking at a list of character names from ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ and Donkey Hodie was so funny, it made us laugh,” chief creative officer Ellen Doherty recalls. “An idea started percolating about a preschool show about a little donkey with big dreams and the idea of perseverance and grit, and how apt that is for preschoolers who are little kids with really big feelings.

Good grief! Charlie Brown’s famous “Peanuts” holiday specials, once available in broad fashion each year via ABC and CBS, are now caught up in some of the complexities of the streaming era.
Apple, which in October unveiled its new rights to classic properties like “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas” as well as “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” for its streaming-video Apple TV service, said it would make the specials available on PBS and its PBS Kids outlet, adopting a “windowing” model for a classic kids property that has begun to take root in a new era for the TV business.
Apple in 2018 established ties to Charles Schulz’ time-honored “Peanuts” empire, which has its origins in a daily comic strip about characters like Lucy, Linus and Peppermint Patty. The pact intially called for Apple to develop original series, specials and shorts, including one featuring...

‘Mixed-ish,’ ‘Shark Tank’ and ‘John Oliver’ Win Top Prizes at Environmental Media Association Awards
“The Kissing Booth 2” star Taylor Zakhar Perez made his awards show debut on Thursday during the 30th annual Environmental Media Association Awards.
“This is my very first awards show, albeit virtually, but what isn’t virtual these days,” the actor said before presenting the top documentary television series award to “Activate” for its episode “Ending Plastic Pollution.” “Virtual meetings, virtual dates, virtual workouts, even virtual cooking classes and little by little our lives are basically recorded 24/7 as if we’re living in a real-life documentary — featuring a weekly nasal swab.”
The EMAs, held virtually this year and hosted by Lance Bass, honor Hollywood productions and individuals for their support of environmental storylines and environmental justice.

The Environmental Media Association crowned the past year’s most environmentally relevant television and movie titles on Friday at the 2020 Ema Awards.
The annual awards show, which has gone virtual this year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, seeks to award Hollywood titles that address climate change, sustainability and other environmental topics through storylines. Ema also recognizes studios and productions for their efforts to put the environment at center stage both in front and behind the camera.
Darren Criss, John Oliver and Tracee Ellis Ross were among the stars accepting awards at the virtual ceremony. Receiving the Ema’s Paul Junger Witt Comedy Award alongside Peter Saji, Ross reflected on the award-winning Mixed-ish episode and expressed her optimism for a greener world.
“Much like we are facing an environmental crisis today, this was an episode that focused on an environmental crisis from 20 years ago,” she said. “We fixed it once and if we work together,...

Your regular round-up of the latest animation news, from HitFix reporter Emily Rome Welcome to the first installment of AnimationFix, where on a regular basis I’ll supply you a round-up of recent animation news and my musings on both the hidden gems and the buzziest new footage and art from the world of toons. First treat for you today: Regina Spektor’s Japanese-influenced cover of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” recorded for stop-motion animation Kubo and the Two Strings. One of the film’s trailers previously gave us an early listen of the cover but just an instrumental section without Spektor’s vocals. Kubo and the Two Strings, a action adventure movie set in a world inspired by ancient Japan, is a samurai story that aims for an epic scale rarely seen in stop-motion. In the film, young Kubo plays a magical three-stringed instrument like a shamisen, a Japanese...

PBS and Amazon have come to a deal that will see Amazon Prime become the subscription-video-on-demand home for the bulk of PBS' kids programming. The companies did not disclose the terms of what they said was a "multi-year" agreement.
The shows will continue to air first on PBS stations, then be available on Amazon after a certain period of time. The new deal does not include future series that PBS may introduce, while some of the network's popular programs stream elsewhere such as "Super Why" which remains at Netflix and "Curious George" at Hulu.
The agreement gives Amazon streaming rights to nineteen series overall, ranging from relatively new launches like "Nature Cat," "Ready Jet Go," "Odd Squad," "Peg + Cat" and "Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood"; to mainstays such as "Wild Kratts," "Martha Speaks," "Dinosaur Train" and "Cyberchase"; to classics including "Reading Rainbow," "Caillou" and "Fetch!
