“She’s mine, and I’m hers.”
The prison movie is a cornerstone of the cinematic landscape. Often adjacent to horror, there’s something inherently horrific about a building full of “convicts” jockeying for power. Criminal masterminds and the wrongfully convicted alike become pawns in a dehumanizing system and struggle to stay alive in the restrictive environment. Claire Denis pushes this genre to its outer limits with sci-fi and horror elements comparing incarceration to the prison of the human body. Her 2018 film High Life follows a group of prisoners turned astronauts who struggle to retain their humanity after the world has cast them out.
When we first meet Monte (Robert Pattinson), he’s raising a toddler on an isolated space station in the galaxy’s outer reaches. His daughter Willow was conceived through assault by fellow inmate Dr. Dibs (Juliette Binoche) as a part of her mission to reproduce in space.

When your last film won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Film, what in the heck could you possibly do for an encore? When you're Bong Joon-ho, a one-of-a-kind cinematic visionary who's yet to make a less-than-great movie, you go to Warner Bros and you go epic.
Bong's follow-up to his 2019 triumph "Parasite" is "Mickey 17," an adaptation of Edward Ashton's critically acclaimed science fiction novel about an expendable space explorer (Robert Pattinson) sent on a perilous mission to colonize the ice planet Niflheim. When the first Mickey dies, a human print is generated with most of the deceased's memories intact. In Ashton's book, the human printing process is set to continue indefinitely after the newest iteration of Mickey dies. But when one Mickey survives after being presumed dead, there are now two Mickeys on Niflheim – which would result in both being eliminated.

French director Claire Denis is set to return to West Africa for her next feature film, an adaptation of late French playwright Bernard-Marie Koltès’s 1980 work Black Battles With Dogs (Combat de nègre et de chiens).
“It’s a play written by a friend of mine a long time ago and directed by Patrice Chéreau on stage in the 80s. He was dying from AIDS and he wanted me to make a film out of it,” Denis told Deadline on the fringes of the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra meeting in Qatar.
She is planning to film in either Senegal or Cameroon.
Denis grew up in West Africa and set a number of her early films in the region, such as Chocolat (1988) and Beau Travail (1989). This will be her first major fiction feature shot on the African continent since the 2009 drama White Material, starring Isabelle Huppert as a coffee plantation...

With the conclusion of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ the Dceu has officially wrapped up, making way for the Dcu to take charge. Despite James Gunn’s upcoming ‘Superman: Legacy’ being labeled as a soft reboot, it appears that under his guidance, the narratives of DC characters are heading in a fresh direction. Gunn, known for keeping fans informed through social media updates, recently addressed some production details on Threads.
According to Gunn, the development of ‘Superman: Legacy’ is progressing smoothly, with sets under construction, costumes finalized, and actors adapting to their roles. When asked about the cast, Gunn mentioned that over 90% are confirmed but not yet 100%, leaving some characters without attached actors, sparking further speculation.
Recent rumors from The Hollywood Reporter suggest that the selection for Dcu’s Supergirl has been narrowed down to Milly Alcock and Meg Donnelly after a screen test in Atlanta. This aligns with previous speculation,...

With the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ Dceu officially ended, and now Dcu is taking over. Even though Gunn’s reboot is supposed to be a soft reboot, it looks like the stories of DC characters under his leadership are going in a new direction. Since Gunn often likes to provide fans with updates via Social Media, he is always eager to answer questions regarding the development of his upcoming ‘Superman: Legacy’ the movie that is supposed to kick off the live-action portion of the Dcu.

Experimental French filmmaker Bertrand Mandico isn’t for everyone — i.e. an acquired taste whose visions push boundaries of cinematic expression — but he’s achieved something of a cult fandom over the last three decades. After last pairing with the director on 2022’s “After Blue” and 2017’s uninhibited Venice winner “The Wild Boys” — Cahiers du Cinéma’s top film of 2018 — the distributor Altered Innocence again teams with Mandico on another provocation. His 2023 Cannes premiere “She Is Conann,” nominated for the Queer Palm before going on to play at other festivals including Locarno, is an acid-trip transgressive riff on the Conan the Barbarian myth. IndieWire shares the trailer here.
Influences on the film include Tony Scott’s “The Hunger,” the works of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Liliana Cavani’s “The Night Porter,” and Fellini’s “Satyricon.” Throw Ken Russell in there for good measure, with profane images in “She Is Conann” reminiscent of “The Devils.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced shortlists in 10 categories for the 96th Academy Awards. 15 films from each of the categories below were shortlisted. There were no surprises when it came to most of the big film Oscar nominations like ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Barbie’, ‘Poor Things’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. India’s Oscar entry ‘2018: Everyone is a Hero’ did not make the cut in a strong International feature film lineup. There were some surprises as well with Chilean film ‘The Settlers’, Argentinian film ‘The Delinquents’ and Turkish film ‘About Dry Grasses’ being snubbed.

While the Original Song Oscar shortlist is typically good about spreading the wealth around, three movies dominated close to half the spaces. Barbie nabbed noms for three songs, while The Color Purple and Apple Original Films’ Flora and Son got two each. Of the 15 spots, Warner Bros owns five of ’em between Barbie and Color Purple.
Warner Bros has been pushing the Barbie soundtrack, produced by A Star Is Born “Shallow” Oscar winner and 7x Grammy winner Mark Ronson, in a major way this season with meet-and-greets and screenings for the latter, as well as performers Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and even Ryan Gosling. All three shortlisted songs from Barbie –“Dance the Night,” “What Was I Made For?” and “I’m Just Ken”– already are nominated over at the Golden Globes. When has there been a juggernaut from one movie between the Globes and Oscar shortlist?

Oscar’s music branch has had its say, naming 15 original scores and 15 songs to its shortlist for possible nomination at the 96th Academy Awards, with few surprises.
As expected, all three “Barbie” songs that were entered — Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” — made the 15-song list. Only two, under Academy rules, can be nominated.
The mild surprise was the citing of two new songs from “The Color Purple” (“Keep It Movin'” and “Superpower”) and two from “Flora and Son” (“High Life” and “Meet in the Middle”), while two of the biggest musicals of the season, “Wonka” and “Wish,” failed to make the cut in either category.

The academy released the 2043 Oscars shortlists in 10 categories on Thursday, December 21. The hopefuls in a wide range of races found out if they remain in contention for the 96th annual Academy Awards. Both music awards – Best Original Song and Best Original Score — were winnowed down to just 15 contenders from 94 and 148 submissions respectively. Likewise for the three awards for shorts: animated (93), documentary (114) and live-action (187). The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlists in 10 categories for the upcoming 96th Oscars ceremony.
Overall, Greta Gerwig’s meta-comedy “Barbie” had the most mentions with five including sound, original song for its three submissions from Billie Eilish (“What I Was Made For?”), Dua Lipa (“Dance the Night”) and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt (“I’m Just Ken”), and original score, from the latter duo. Five other films submitted the maximum of three songs, including two from Disney: the live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with “For the First Time,” “The Scuttlebutt” and “Wild Uncharted Waters,” all by Alan Menken (who won Oscars for the original in 1989) and Lin-Manuel Miranda; and “Wish,” the Julia Michaels-Benjamin Rice tunes including “I’m a Star,...

After earworm-filled musical dramas “Once,” “Begin Again” and “Sing Street,” “Flora and Son” marks a notable first for writer-director John Carney: it’s the first time he wrote a song for a film that’s designed to underwhelm. “I always thought, what would it be like if you started a song and you just didn’t get the response that you’re supposed to get in a musical?” Carney says about the central song in the AppleTV+ feature starring Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
“Flora and Son” tells the story of Dublin-based Flora (Hewson), a young single mom who is struggling with her life and especially her teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). She digs a guitar out of the trash, but Max is not interested — he only wants to make music using Garage Band and his laptop. So Flora decides to learn to play, and finds washed-up songwriter Jeff (Gordon-Levitt) offering guitar lessons online,...

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is set to dominate the original song race. Oscar voters will likely pick all three contenders from the blockbuster for the original song shortlist: Billie Eilish’s tear-inducing ballad “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s pitiful song of feeling inadequate “I’m Just Ken.”
Mark Ronson and songwriting partner Andrew Wyatt wrote the latter two, while Eilish partnered with brother Finneas on her tune. However, with only two nominations allowed in this category, it will be left to the music branch to decide which two they pick.
Lenny Kravitz eyes a spot on the list with “Road to Freedom,” a song he penned for George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The soulful song’s horns and trombones are key to this composition, which accompanies the film’s end credits.

Nothing like a good karaoke cover. Kelly Clarkson returned from Thanksgiving break to her daily Kellyoke segment to perform a cover of Bloc Party‘s “Like Eating Glass.” And boy, did she give the band’s vocalist Kele Okereke a run for his money.
“It’s so cold in this house/Open mouth swallowing us,” sang Clarkson, backed by My Band Y’all, and wearing a leather jumpsuit and dark mascara to match the song’s hard rock energy. “The children sent home from school/Will not stop crying.”

By diving headlong into the title role for Flora and Son, Eve Hewson — the daughter of U2 frontman Bono — conquered her fear of singing, the actress said at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles in a panel with co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the film’s composer and primary songwriter Gary Clark.
Hewson, who played instruments before she turned to acting, said she jumped at the chance to play Flora in spite of the vocal work that the part would demand because she loved the script and the character — a struggling but very spirited single mother in Dublin trying to make peace with the wayward adolescent son she bore as a teenager.
“I just thought, ‘I could not let this person get away from me. I have to play this part. And I’m just going to have to get over my fear of singing — it’s not something I’ve...

In Apple Original Films’ Flora and Son, single mom Flora (Eve Hewson) is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son Max (Orén Kinlan). Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up L.A. musician (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music.
In order to build up believable chemistry between its leads in the film and tenderize the relationship between mother and son, songwriter and composer Gary Clark first had to build a relationship with director John Carney, a feat Clark would find was three decades in the making. At Deadline’s Sound & Screen: Film event, Clark reflected on the oddly coincidental meeting that set their now frequent collaboration partnership on full course.

As is true of all his films, “Flora and Son” started with writer-director John Carney mining from personal experience. “The big story for me was my mother, and I thought about my own relationship with music when I was young, dragging my mother around music shops. What did that feel like for her,” the filmmaker said in an exclusive clip that shows his artistic process both writing the film, and the original songs like “High Life” that are featured in it.
Although he is unique in the extent to which he composes the music for his own films, Carney begins work on a new project like most writer-directors do: he starts with the screenplay first. “Otherwise, it’s going to be like a jukebox musical where the script doesn’t matter and you’re just drawing the dots between songs,” Carney said to IndieWire over Zoom.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

As visions of various 21st-century promises and perils alike converge upon us at once — from space travel to possible extraterrestrial contact to artificial intelligence to the looming societal threat posed by climate change — the science fiction genre finds itself at arguably its most urgent and crucial point in history. The next year in film will bring us an incredibly vast and diverse range of new sci-fi flicks, whether coming from old savants like Bong Joon-ho, Denis Villeneuve, and Alex Garland, or genre debutants like Joshua Oppenheimer, Bruno Dumont, and even Francis Ford Coppola. Charlie Robison, whose gritty songwriting and independent spirit helped pave the way for modern Texas music, has died at 59. His wife Kristen Robison confirmed his death in a Facebook post.
While a cult figure in the mainstream country music world, his influence throughout his native Texas and on the Red Dirt scene was undeniable. The first single has been released from the soundtrack of Apple’s musical drama “Flora and Son,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Eve Hewson. Titled “High Life,” the single is an emotional yet optimistic track about a motherhood, performed by Hewson and her co-star Orén Kinlan.
While she might be the daughter of Irish rockstar Bono, Hewson said she did not enlist her U2 frontman father for help on the project. “I’ve learned so much from him, in terms of life presence, stage presence. During the development of "The Batman," there were only two real contenders to be the Dark Knight: Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult. Director Matt Reeves had been impressed by their recent performances and knew he wanted one of them to be his leading man. Both actors met with Reeves and had screen tests, and as you probably know by now, Pattinson got the part.
During the press tour for Hoult's new movie "Renfield," GQ España asked him whether he regrets missing out on Batman. "I'm sure if you ask most people, they'll tell you they'd want to portray that role," Hoult replied. However, beyond that, he wasn't bitter about it at all. He explained:
"When they tell you for the first time that it's not you, it's painful, but then you have to accept it as normality. I think that's probably a strength of mine as an actor as well.

Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory will probably go down as one of the most memorable pre-breakout first roles for a now-major actor. Pattinson's work in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" was understated and well-considered, getting to the heart of the character as he was in the books. I think most "Potter" fans feel positively about his performance, and they should.
Unsurprisingly — at least to me, this feels like how Pattinson would approach a character — the actor revealed during a video shot on the original "Goblet of Fire" press junket that he was very prepared going into his Cedric audition. No wonder he knocked it out of the park. He recalled:
"I read the book before the audition, and there wasn't any part of the character which I didn't think I could play. And the thing is -- I don't know if that's arrogant or not, but I just...

Bloc Party return today with the single “High Life,” their first new music of the year.
“High Life” is a mid-tempo groove that recalls the dance-punk movements of 1970s London and New York. It’s fleshed out with a dynamic, percussive beat and layers of angular guitars, as vocalist Kele Okereke attempts to lure you into the world of hedonistic glamour: “Are you ready for the high life? For things to go our way?” he sings. “We’ll take a car to the West End, to catch a Broadway show/ Call ahead to book our table, we’ll find a place to go.”
Lyrically, “High Life” does at times feel a bit more shallow than some of Bloc Party’s better songs. But it certainly doesn’t take itself too seriously, fully leaning in to its playful funk aesthetic. While the band have yet to announce a new album, all...

It’s 4/20, which means there’s no better time for a new collaboration from dancehall legend Buju Banton and Snoop Dogg about the magical mysteries of marijuana, aptly titled, “High Life.”
The breezy, bumping, horn-laced tune is “about how innate consciousness and connection is to the blessed herbs,” Banton tells Rolling Stone via email. “Not just from a feel good perspective but also a spiritual level as well. It was our intent to pay homage to that sacrament.” The two artists do exactly that, while still having some fun with it,...

Nicholas Hoult is poised to have a pretty successful spring. This weekend he has the title role in Universal’s gory R-rated comedy “Renfield” opposite Nicolas Cage as Dracula. Next month, he returns to Hulu’s comedy “The Great” for Season 3 fresh off his first-ever Emmy nomination for the show last year. He’s also starring in Robert Eggers’s next ensemble horror-thriller, “Nosferatu” opposite the likes of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bill Skarsgard, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe. But in an interview with The Guardian published this week, Hoult was in a reflective mood about the roles that got away.
Asked about how he felt during the early days of the pandemic, which Hoult called the longest stretch of time he’s had without work, the actor said it was largely fine in terms of his mental health. “I think because I was just home being dad, which was nice,” the actor,...
