"Nothing Is as it Seems"
Epic Misdirection.
That is the only real exploitable facet of storytelling that is left these days, for Television or Film. There appear to be few new frontiers, really. The next step I guess would be to put the viewer in a real 3-d environment that they could experience or interact with. Because, when Television and Film can show us a level of fantastic photographic effects and realism where practically anything that can be imagined can be "created" (Even though it is Computer Generated), then all that is left is Story, and how to tell it. I have found that Comic books have been the source of some of these impossible tales, but they never translated into a film or Television environment well - Until now. And I am not just speaking of this show, it seems that these are the years for Comic-based shows.
I stated in my review of "Devils you Know" that the final scene had shown us something, a hideous event, without really showing us all of what happened. So we could speculate on the various ways it could have played out. The fun part is guessing how it played out, and then seeing how well you guessed when they finally reveal what happened. I was happy that my guesses were wrong.
Usually I am pretty good at figuring it out: In the 1st season of Fringe, how many suspected that Peter Bishop was from an alternate universe? That was one of the best pieces of misdirection of 21st Century Television. What I just saw in this episode is the same kind of Maguffin, and they pulled it off in just 2 episodes, and by setting up a simple premise: 1) "Lash" changes to a regular guy. 2) Who?
And then they had us "chasing the wrong guy" for half of the episode. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D pushes the boundaries broken by other shows and supersedes them, constantly. And, there are now about 3, 4, maybe 5 different story threads interweaving. This episode touches on all of them, Dr Garner's survival of the store attack and we get to see what "really" happened, Coulsen gets to visit "Rosalind's" facility, Bobbi and May go after Ward, Mack and Daisy chase a Macguffin, and Fitz is trying to find a way to open the Portal.
Some of these stories weave back into what some of the other arcs are doing, such as Daisy and Mack's tracking of one guy, leads them to where Coulsen is with Rosalind. And what Daisy sees does not make her happy at all. But then we see it from Coulsen's POV and it changes everything. But one thing is clear, Rosalind, regardless of why she is doing what she's doing, is still doing the wrong thing. So the question what is SHIELD going to do about it?
