Belser Movie Reviews Likes Dick Dickster
captainmarvell-3203717 February 2016
BELSER MOVIE REVIEWS: "THEY WANT DICK DICKSTER".

Nursing a nasty hangover? No fear. The Belser is here to help you relieve that ailment. My bag of tricks includes some witty wisdom and interesting insight on the movie review tip. This is a special one for BELSER MOVIE REVIEWS. Mainly because this is an independent film, not a major release like I usually do. Now, last night, I was privileged to be invited to the premiere of a new film titled 'They Want Dick Dickster'. NO, it's not a porno. Well, not really. More on that in a moment. HERE'S THE STORY: Shot documentary- style, this movie follows film director Dick Dickster (Robert Ray Shafer), a washed- up alcoholic has-been (actually, 'never-was' is more accurate). His only claim to fame is a really bad cult classic horror flick he made years earlier called (appropriately) "Cult of Doom". Since that movie, he fell into a depression and has basically burned every bridge he's ever established. Dick is now universally despised, both in and out of the industry. However, a young USC film student ( and fan of Cult of Doom) offers to shot a documentary /comeback project about the life of Dickster. Also, in a stroke of luck, he gets an offer to do a porno remade of his most famous movie, titled "Cult of Poon" (not making that up). Between film crews, loan sharks, strippers, midgets and booze, get ready to look into the crazy world of Dick Dickster. ACTING AND WRITING: Acting wise, Robert Ray Shafer (THE OFFICE, the PSYCHO COP movies) really stole the show as Dick Dickster. Shafer turned a miserable, egotistical, selfish lush with no redeeming qualities into a very likable character. It reminded me a lot of Billy Bob Thornton in 'BAD SANTA'. You actually say to yourself, "Why do I like this guy?" but he kept you engaged. I dig that. The supporting cast was quite colorful as well. Among them are Tim Abell as a loan shark/screenwriter and Calvin Tenner as a buff Army Ranger with a gay midget boyfriend. The real stand out was Tim Russ (STAR TREK: VOYAGER) as Sammy Davas Jr, Dickster's scheming agent and his only friend (despite the fact Dick owes him money). On the sexier side of the game, we have Melanie Good as Dickster's stripper ex-wife, Jan Broberg as the producer of Cult of Poon( and an ex porn star), and a number of young stars including Frankie Cullen and Tasha Halevi. I really loved the documentary aspect of it. Especially, the talking head interviews from people like Richard Grieco, Gerald Webb, director Fred Ray and others about how much they hate Dickster. Humor wise, this movie is brought to you by the same guys that brought you movies like 3-HEADED SHARK ATTACK and the SHARKNADO movies for The Asylum, so it's crazy funny. Lots of language, sex jokes, fart jokes, vomiting and some nudity. My kind of movie. FINAL WORD: Would I watch this again? My answer: HELL YES!! I loved this movie from start to finish. Kudos to director/writer Chris Ray, producer Gerald Webb and writer/producer/ star Robert Ray Shafer. Considering the fact these guys made a feature length film in 6 DAYS TIME, this movie is quite an accomplishment.Be on the look for Deinstitutionalized Films who made this flick. Check it out when it comes out on Netflix or on DVD. This movie GETS the Belser Seal of Approval.

Down on his luck "scum bag" booze riddled director bags a comeback or does he?
woehrlegig212 January 2016
They Want Dick Dickster is Get Shorty meets Boogie Nights meets Ed Wood. Have fun with this irreverent look at Hollywood from the perspective of a booze riddled has been wannabe director, who in spite of marinating his past in bad karma, "mounts" an unlikely comeback. Follow Dick Dickster's journey into oblivion as he attempts to offend every breathing member of the Hollywood film community in this seedy romp to movie making redemption on a stick. The film offers us "proof of life" footage as a documentary film student chronicles this painfully hilarious tale of the "legendary" director of Cult of Doom and his rocky road to being back "on top" before he drinks himself to death or gets murdered by a rabid fan, jilted ex, or his favorite bartender. Who wants Dick Dickster Dead?? You have to see it to find out.

People seek revenge on hack director.
randytinak25 December 2015
"They want Dick Dickster" is an irreverent spoof of the movie industry. Bobby Ray Shafer has created a hilarious script that is filled with his dark sense of humor. The film deals at least partially with the seedier side of the film industry, and does so with very little nudity and only slapstick violence, but plenty of purple language, so prepared for that.

The film is done with "Blair Witch Project" style photography, which gives it a sense of realism. It also includes "interview" clips of various characters, all discussing why they want Dick Dickster. This appears to have been done to give the film a documentary look, and this was successful.

From the characters' names to the spoof of splatter films, Bobby Ray Shafer and company have succeeded in creating another film that's destined to become a cult favorite, like Shafer's earlier "Psycho Cop" series.

Shafer is a great actor with a black sense of humor and I found the whole thing to be sidesplittingly funny. I had belly laughs through the entire film, the first of which came even before the opening credits. I can't wait for the sequel!

Don't Pay For This
refinedsugar31 January 2024
Follow along with me here for a second. You sit thru a pair of horror movies in 'Psycho Cop' and it's sequel 'Psycho Cop Returns' where the villain is played by actor Bobby Ray Shafer. You're not familiar with him so you check his credits and wait what's this? He wrote and starred in a comedy called 'Dick Dickster' and it has a solid rating. Could this be an undiscovered gem?

Nope. This is another tale of a bad movie, ego & lies. Doing a search for this on the 'net will get you many things including videos with the cast on the red carpet for a premiere. For a cheap film that is in no way memorable from a small non-major studio that would have been the best part ... if it wasn't for the fake reviews found here at IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes.

Dick Dickster (Shafer) is a piece of vain trash who abuses everyone. He was once a film director who's horror flick many years ago got some minor acclaim. Which he might have raped one of the female actresses working on it. A fan follows him doing a documentary. The mob wants 50k paid back. He's offered 100k to direct his cult hit turned porn parody which he accepts. Can he get along with everyone to finish the film and make a career comeback? Zzz.

It's not satire of the Hollywood system. Barely comedy unless you consider a loudmouth alcoholic funny or think a repeating gag of guys getting hit in the balls is great. Few C-level stars embarrass themselves. Tons of green screen belay it's low budget. My continuing amazement seeing how easily people cheaply sell out to push drivel such as 'Dick Dickster' made for a more interesting time than actually watching it.

A lot of fun!

Bobby Ray Shafer has made a very funny, very entertaining movie here with "They Want Dick Dickster."

Clearly leaning on his experiences in Hollywood, Shafer also relies strongly on the exploits of legendary Hollywood actors and directors to create a witty mockumentary about movie-making.

Shafer shows he's not just a talented actor, but he also is a sharp writer has a keen eye for producing.

The supporting cast also do a good job of making the movie a fun time. Jan Broberg in particular was fun to watch.

This one is worth your time, for sure.

Bobby Ray Shafer is awesome
lauraabanker25 September 2017
Robert Ray Shafer delivers another great performance. I enjoyed watching his work. He has a larger than life presence combined with a great sense of humor. They Want Dick Dickster has a great story line with an unexpected ending. I can't wait to tell my friends about it (without giving too much away).

Fun to watch
joelramsey-8970627 August 2017
I've always loved Hollywood spoofs and this movie does not disappoint. There are some great lines in this one. Dick is irreverent, narcissistic and funnier n hell (a lot like our most prominent politician except for the funnier n hell part). Take a break from life, grab a bottle of Jimbo and check this out.

They Want Dick Dickster
moviefreakjps3 March 2016
With the bleakness of "Hail Caesar" and the silliness of "The Room", THEY WANT DICK DICKSTER is anchored by a hilarious performance by character actor Robert R. Shafer (Bob Vance, "The Office"; "Psycho Cop").

Now have fun recommending it to people and having everyone think you're recommending a porno film. Spoiler alert: everyone's going to think it's a porno.

And don't do any drinking games revolving around the utterance of"Dick Dickster." You will die of alcohol poisoning. Or embarrassment. Or both.

And remember... He's an artist!
brassknucklehead13 March 2016
Upfront, I'll admit that I don't often watch comedies. Even so, I'm certain that I had a stupid grin on my face during most of this movie's running time. I feel it has the potential to become a cult favorite, and hope it receives some well-deserved success for those involved.

Dick Dickster is not an easy man to root for, but it's hard not to like him! He's his own worst enemy; not that the seedy Hollywood underbelly offers many favors. Bobby Ray Shafer delivers a Quaid-esque performance in the titular role! The character is at once larger than life, and bigger than his britches.

When his shady cohorts aren't besting him, Dickster's struggle with the bottle surely gets the better of him. His antics open the door for many colorful, eccentric moments, and the casting for those who have to contend with him was on the nose. Tim Abell was particularly memorable as a heavy, and lovely Jan Broberg proved to be a great foil! I was also impressed by Tim Russ' performance...and voice. It seemed to me that this was a labor of love effort that brought out the best in all involved, which added to my enjoyment.

I viewed this as a send-up of some of the dark comedies of yesteryear, with a modernized spin. The documentary-style BTS adventure offers the sort of insight that movie lovers hope only happens in the movies! Along the way, there are plenty of laughs, a plethora of colorful characters, and some well-delivered twists to elevate the script and humor. A batch of cameos lends a particular sort of Hollywood street cred, as well as some of the best anecdotes about the "artist" known as Dick Dickster.

Well done, Mister Shafer! Not only have you delivered a showpiece for your talents, you've also established a universe filled with potential sequels and movie-within-a-movie antics!

Dick Dickster is HILARIOUS!
tkherring199026 November 2018
Robert Ray Shafer is phenomenal in this hilarious mockumentary style hollywood spoof! Robert Ray Shafer, along side many other familiar faces, all do a fantastic job in this movie. Through the lens of a huge dick dickster fan (tim meeks), watch the latter half of dicks career unfold as he's faced with a decision. A decision to put a spin on his greatest success as a director in "cult of doom". I thoroughly enjoyed this film and considered it to be one the funniest films of 2018!

Great Mockumentary About Hollywood!
dianementzer27 November 2018
It's a funny, fast-paced story with clever dialogue and a terrific cast! Robert Ray Shafer is fantastic as Dick Dickster! To see him go from despicable obnoxious drunk to a man in a state of child-like glee is a treat. The rest of the cast is amazing, too! There are too many great moments to try and list them and I wouldn't want to give away any of the plot twists. It is a great mockumentary and definitely worth watching!

A fun and quirky film
lkulp1-778-6080619 January 2021
This was such a fun film, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. The film is set as a "mockumentary" of Dick Dickster, director of "Cult of Doom". To say that Dick is down on his luck is an understatement but in no way is he a character you feel sympathetic for. Robert Ray Shafer plays the heck out of Dick Dickster, he was incredible right up to the end. I loved Tim Russ as his manager Sammy Davas Jr and was great. It was fun to see him on screen, especially his karaoke scene. Stellar performance from Jared Cohn as Tim Meeks the super fan of Dick Dickster who is filming the Documentary of Dick. Melanie Good and Jan Broberg were great as Hardy Dickster and CoCo Hart respectively. I also really enjoyed Tim Abell as Tony Baritoni, the only "heavy" bringing tons of levity to the film. Kudos to Christopher Ray for directing a really cool and quirky movie. Oh, loved the cameos from Fred Olen Ray and Richard Grieco

Hilarious movie!
themetalofmaggot15 April 2021
This movie had me laughing from beginning to end. It's so good to see Robert R. Shafer fly off the hand, and play a hilariously unhinged charater like back in the Psycho Cop days.

It's a very raunchy. Non-PC old skool comedy, that pulls no punches. Definitely my speed. I think everyone really did a fantastic job here. And made a great comedy.

Destined to be a cult classic!
chainsawmcbride26 November 2020
Robert R. Shafer has done it. Get ready for a raunchy, rude, wild ride that will leave your sides hurting from laughter. Fans of his that have followed his career from the classic "Psycho Cop" series may not be surprised, but newer fans who only know him as the loveable and wholesome Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration, from "The Office" will feel at home with the film's shooting style and set up but are in for a big surprise. Filled with laugh out loud moments and memorable performances from the likes as..fellow "Office" alum Calvin Tenner, Tim abell, Tim Russ, Jan-Broberg Felt, Cela Scott and Caleb Thomas just to name a few. Even the small appearances by the likes of Richard Grieco, Kaiwi Mersereau, Frankie Cullen and starlet Bonnie Rotten are screen gold. This film is garuntees to make you laugh and have you quoting it for months to come, just make sure your children aren't around lmao. Definitely a film I could watch again and again. Well done!

What a fun film
maryanagnostopoulos7 September 2020
This movie was a wonderful fun film !!! To me it was almost like watching a conversation between people. The entire cast was phenomenal I absolutely loved the interactions between Tony and Dick , they seem to be on opposite sides .... mostly but some twists occur too. I explained this film to my friends as a documentary. Like a cross between This is SpinalTap and Get Shorty . If you need a fun night of entertainment...... this is a film for you !!

"It's got everything, comedy, drama...dramedy"
gotrupe-073257 June 2020
Buckle up, because riding along with Dick Dickster and his Manager Sammy Davas,Jr. on his way to revive his Hollywood career is a bumpy and hysterical ride. Robert Ray Shafer (Psycho Cop, The Office) takes us on a journey through Hollywood that goes from sadness, to gladness to downright badness. Anyone who has spent time, even a little, in the machinery of show business will find so much to relate to here. Dick Dickster, as the down and out Director, chasing his next big project and running from the mob and his ex-wife, takes us on a break-neck rollercoaster of comedy and situations that would make even some veterans of the biz squeamish. His passion for the business and love of whiskey collide daily, and the documentary crew following him captures it all. Shafer is probably best known as "Bob Vance/Vance Refrigeration" on the wildly popular sitcom 'The Office' but this Dickster character is the complete antithesis of Bob, in so many funny ways (and a few that would make Phyllis blush). The supporting cast is also very well appointed. It was great to see Richard Grieco again as well as Tim Russ (Star Trek: Voyager) and Jan Broberg, but my personal favorite is Calvin Tenner (Glenn in the warehouse of 'The Office') and his opportunity for some very funny comedic choices/scenes. As a veteran myself of Hollywood for almost 20 years, I saw so many familiar "types" here that reminded me of some great and some not-so-great moments in my own career as a Casting Director. Shot in only 6 days, Shafer used every minute to his advantage, employing a farce-like pace to the absurd situations these characters found themselves in, resulting in a pure comedy that doesn't really give you a chance to catch your breath before the next crazy scene picks you up and dumps you out onto Hollywood Blvd. Dick shows us that no matter who thinks you're "finished in this town", if you still believe in yourself, your dreams...and whiskey, you can do great things and "rise to the occasion". For those who still misunderstand him and his vision...they don't know Dick!

Pretty great.
munky-089109 May 2022
It has a strong Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob feel, which is the best.

It's chaotic, very chaotic. Full of dry humor, and not so dry humor lol.

I like it allot, and would definitely buy it on Blu-ray.
