Take-Two Interactive, publisher of video games including Grand Theft Auto, is acquiring Farmville maker Zynga for $12.7 billion, creating a bulked-up gaming giant.
Under the deal, Take-Two will acquire all outstanding shares of Zynga in a cash-and-stock transaction representing a 64% premium on Zynga’s stock price as of last Friday. Zynga shares, which have been in a slump over the past year, rocketed almost 50% before the opening bell.
Take-Two is led by Strauss Zelnick, a veteran media and tech executive who became Zynga’s chairman and CEO and the firm’s largest shareholder in a 2007 takeover. The well-connected exec took a turn in the traditional spotlight in 2018, serving as chairman of CBS Corp. and helping steer the media company through its Les Moonves travails en route to its reunion with Viacom.

What if life fared better inside a simulation? Fans of video game franchises, such as Grand Theft Auto and The Sims might be able to relate to this. Being able to control the narrative and having the power to determine the fate of a certain character is a pretty thrilling experience. This theme is further explored in 20th Century Studios’ new movie, Free Guy. What to Expect from the Movie The science fiction action comedy film is directed by Shawn Levy, who is no stranger to the science fiction genre. We’ve come a long way since Disney released “Tron” 39 years ago — so far, in fact, that some people actually buy into the theory that what we think of as existence could be just a giant computer simulation, as Elon Musk described at Code Conference in 2016: “Forty years ago we had ‘Pong,’ like two rectangles and a dot. That was what games were. Now 40 years later, we have photorealistic 3D simulations with millions of people playing simultaneously, and it’s getting better every year,” Musk mused. Therefore, “if you assume any rate of improvement at all, the games will become indistinguishable from reality.”

Monotony isn’t a problem for the generic citizens of Free City, an open-world video game in the vein of “Grand Theft Auto,” where robberies, shootouts, and explosion are commonplace.
Within this virtual realm of bloodless violence, director Shawn Levy builds the action-packed rom-com “Free Guy,” his most thematically ambitious project yet thanks to writers Matt Lieberman (“The Christmas Chronicles”) and Zak Penn (“Ready Player One”).
Fortunately for this team, their big-budget creation evokes a bit of “The Truman Show” more than it does the dreadful “Pixels,” another picture that bet on the mass appeal of video-game culture but with an angle of nostalgia. Levy, a Hollywood regular behind the bankable “Night at the Museum” franchise, operates in eye-popping VFX set pieces and above-average comic timing, consistently landing dialogue-driven, self-aware gags.

It’s not exactly a secret that Grand Theft Auto is one of the best-selling video game franchises ever, but publisher Take-Two Interactive’s latest reports regarding the series’ lifetime sales figures confirm that it is in some truly elite company.
According to those reports, Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold over 150 million units to date. While that’s an impressive enough figure in its own right, what may be even more impressive is the fact that the lifetime sales figures of the GTA franchise just crossed the 350 million units mark.
Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto V has surpassed 150 million units sold in.

Lahore, March 1 (Ians) Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi while thanking his fans on Monday for their birthday wishes, said in his tweet that he is turning 44 this year, despite saying earlier in his autobiography that he was born in 1975.
"Thank you very much for all the lovely birthday wishes - 44 today! My family and my fans are my biggest assets. Really enjoying my stint with Multan and hope to produce match winning performances for all Ms (Multan Sultans) fans," tweeted Afridi.
In his autobiography "Game Changer", which was released in April 2019, Afridi had said that he was born in 1975 as opposed to 1980 which is what was written in the official records. It meant that he was above "19" when he hit a record 37-ball century against Sri Lanka in 1996 and not 16, which is what his official age was. China’s HiShow Entertainment has unveiled a slate of new productions ahead of the first online edition of Hong Kong FilMart. Its lineup includes the highly-anticipated series “Game Changer.”
Scheduled to be released in the fourth quarter this year, “Game Changer” is one of a handful of mainland Chinese drama series that tells a contemporary urban story, with “fast-paced American-style” storytelling that is intended to appeal to overseas audiences, according to Wang Haiyi, HiShow’s head of the international business.
Starring heartthrob Huang Xiaoming as a journalist-turned-publicist alongside Tan Zhuo, Cai Wenjing and Zhang Bo, the 40-episode series dives into the world of public relations with stories revolving around the crisis management arm of a PR firm.

The Grand Theft Auto franchise has always relied on an army of memorable characters, and unless GTA 6 makes some drastic changes to the series, you can bet the upcoming sequel will feature plenty of new heroes, villains, and general ne’er-do-wells (as well as the excellent missions the series is known for).
Rockstar also routinely brings back classic GTA characters for new installments. Assuming that the studio continues to dive into this series’ surprisingly deep shared universe of criminals, there are quite a few characters we’d love to see make a return in what is rapidly becoming the most anticipated video game in the world.
Here are the legendary Grand Theft Auto characters we want to see more of in GTA 6:

Filming of movie and TV series is underway in China following a months-long shutdown forced by the coronavirus outbreak. But not the whole country is back at work, or working at the same speed.

When I was young, I used to associate April with a rhyme about rain my grandfather would recite like the closing statement of a philosophical debate, the approaching end of the school year, and the one day a year in which people made you miserable. That last one is still true. The only difference is that day used to be April Fools’ Day and is now the 24-hour period commonly known as Tax Day.
I’m not alone. Most Americans associate April with the time of year the dang government reaches into their pockets and takes their hard-earned money while the president works to lower his score on the back nine at Mar-a-Lago. There’s something about the finality of Tax Day that haunts even the most fiscally responsible adults. It most likely has something to do with the classic image of the taxman.

Violent movies are nothing new to cinema. In fact, when done well, there’s an undeniably visceral thrill to seeing unspeakable acts in real life perpetrated in film. Video games have made a literal fortune with this sort of content, be it any number of shooting games, the Grand Theft Auto franchise, etc. Opening this week, the action comedy Guns Akimbo tries to merge the two formats, while attempting to satirize our silence obsessed culture. Unfortunately, it’s so ineptly handled that it comes closer to being offensive than it does to being a biting satire. This is one of 2020’s worst efforts, by far. The movie imagines a world where a game called Skizm has taken the country by storm. Social media users flock to their screens to watch two individuals fight to the death, as it all gets telecast like gladiatorial combat. Miles (Daniel Radcliffe) has no interest in it,...

Halting all film releases and closing cinemas over Chinese New Year was the most dramatic possible expression of the emergency response to the novel coronavirus threat that spread from the city of Wuhan in January. The movie distribution and exhibition sectors had been counting on a billion dollars of box office revenue over the 10-day holiday period, a peak season that determines the growth trajectory for the whole year.
Yet, bad as the virus impact is for the movie releasing sectors, there could be longer-term consequences for China’s film production and eventually for its emerging rights sales businesses.
“This will reduce the number of productions in 2021. This will be bad for employees in this sector, from post-production or special effects or crew. Everyone,” says Tony Lu, a producer working on “The Wandering Earth” sequel at director Frant Gwo’s studio.

The Pokémon Company started something when it delivered the most critically well-received movie of its kind last year with Detective Pikachu, and now it appears the entire industry wants a crack at repeating its success. Following a controversial setback, Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog will race into theaters at blistering speed in just a few short days, but Sega’s mascot is just the first of many more iconic video game franchises due to make the big screen jump in the near future.
We already know a great deal about next year’s Mortal Kombat reboot, of course, but one such game-to-film flick that remains a mystery is Saints Row. Often likened to Rockstar’s money printing Grand Theft Auto series,...

Your daily dose of Grand Theft Auto 6 hearsay has arrived right on cue.
Fans of Rockstar’s acclaimed franchise have been fervently devouring any and all details that could potentially point to an official announcement in recent months, an eagerness that’s given rise to endless rumors and speculation. Release dates ranging from 2020 all the way up to 2022 have been theorized by multiple different sources, some believable; others clearly little more than baseless assumption. Truthfully, nobody but the house that built Grand Theft Auto itself knows exactly when the anticipated sequel will drop, though prone to latching onto any and all potential hints as they are, some fans believe the developer is finally alluding to an imminent reveal.
As part of a blog post published earlier this week, Rockstar detailed how 2019 has been the biggest yet for both Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2‘s online counterparts. For the former,...

While many have quietly found themselves hoping that a Grand Theft Auto 6 announcement is imminent, developments today suggest fans are only setting themselves up for disappointment. According to UK tabloid the Daily Star, equity firm Jeffries recently held talks with industry veteran Darion Lowenstein. With Rockstar one of the more high-profile developers listed on his résumé, discussion quickly turned to the Grand Theft Auto franchise and, more specifically, when exactly he expected a sequel to 2013’s fifth installment to arrive.
You can find the pertinent details below but suffice it to say, the outlook doesn’t look good for those hoping for an imminent reveal.
“As a former Rockstar employee, Darion noted that the Houser brothers place all their emphasis on game quality rather than hitting a deadline,” Jeffries’ press release notes. “His absolute best-case-scenario for a game release is Holiday 2021,” it continues, “though he does not expect an announcement/trailer anytime soon.

Famed Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption developer Rockstar has found itself courting intense controversy yet again due to a damning new report.
According to TaxWatch UK’s latest findings, the company, which is based primarily in Edinburgh, Scotland, claimed a massive £37.6m in Video Games Tax Relief during the 2018/19 financial year, accounting for 37% of all claims made during the 12 month period by the entire UK games industry. Why the ruckus, you ask? Well, the outrage primarily stems from the fact that since launch back in 2013, Grand Theft Auto V has generated more than $6 billion in total sales.
That eye-watering figure not only led to GTA V being crowned the top-selling title of the decade just gone but the most successful entertainment product of all time. Backed by impressive statistics such as those, it’s hardly surprising that Rockstar’s insistence on being afforded tax relief has been branded insulting.

It's hard to believe it's been 15 years since we first heard Robbie Coltrane deliver that line in character as Rubeus Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the first of what would turn into eight total fantasy films based on the beloved "Harry Potter" book series by J.K. Rowling.
Nov. 16, 2001 marked the day the world was introduced to Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Emma Watson as Hermione Granger and Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley. Potterheads quickly fell in love with their unbreakable bond on-screen, which was noticeably just as strong when the cameras weren't rolling.

Casting news continues to seep out from the ongoing Berlin Film Festival, and the latest nugget has revealed that Victor Frankenstein star Daniel Radcliffe will make tracks to the Amazon for Greg McLean’s new thriller, Jungle.
Lifting inspiration from Yossi Ghinsberg’s memoir about his own trek in the South American forest, McLean’s feature film will chronicle his gruelling journey through the lush wilderness in what is being pitched as a psychological thriller.
Ghinsberg’s troubled expedition has been brought to the screen before, when his adventure was the subject for Discovery Channel’s hour-long docudrama series, I Shouldn’t Be Alive. The title alone ought to give you an indication of the trials and tribulations that the explorer faced when cast astray in the Amazonian jungle. By the same token, it’s shaping up to be a meaty role for Radcliffe to take on, and will hopefully...

BBC’s The Gamechangers didn’t exactly do its GTA subject matter justice. Ryan explains why we need a great movie about game design...
There’s a moment in the BBC’s drama The Gamechangers where Sam Houser, the co-founder of Grand Theft Auto studio Rockstar North, says to one of his minions, “We need to make our own game engine.”
In the very next scene, the game engine’s finished and demonstrated to Jamie, another Rockstar co-founder. To the casual observer, it might seem as though the process of making a game engine is as simple as ordering a pizza.
It’s an example of the 90-minute show’s clumsy handling of its subject matter: the videogame phenomenon Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, its social impact and its controversy. This was the kind of drama that felt the need to carefully explain some things in painfully literal terms -...

Rockstar Games isn't a fan of BBC's The Gamechangers - the Grand Theft Auto drama that starred Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxman - calling it "random, made-up bollocks" in the wake of its airing last night (September 16) - and some critics weren't much kinder.
Reception has been mixed. Mainstream outlets like The Telegraph gave it four stars and praised Radcliffe's "excellent" performance, while Digital Spy said it was a "tense, nostalgic drama" - but on the other hand, specialist gaming press Kotaku branded it a "Titanic disappointment", while Eurogamer called it "weird and meaningless".

"Was Basil Brush busy?" Developer Rockstar offers its response to the BBC's Grand Theft Auto film, The Gamechangers...
Nb: The following contains a bit of saucy language.
It's fair to say that Rockstar was never particularly thrilled at the BBC's decision to make The Gamechangers, a feature-length drama about Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and its surrounding controversy. The game giant sued the BBC earlier this year for "trademark infringement", adding that it had an "obligation to protect our intellectual property."
Well, the drama finally appeared on British television last night, and it's fair to say that the resulting response has been far more interesting than the show itself - even if it does count Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton among its stars. Marred by stiff dialogue and some truly bizarre scenes - Paxton chatting to God on a golf course, a bearded Radcliffe staring affectionately at a poster of...

Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton star in The Gamechangers, a drama about the making of the Grand Theft Auto series. Any good? Not exactly...
Nb: The following contains spoilers.
How do you make an interesting film about coding a videogame? It sounds like a difficult subject to dramatise on the face of it. But ultimately, all great stories are more about the relationships between characters than what they do for a living. A movie that contained nothing but boxing matches for 100 continuous minutes would leave audiences reeling. The Rocky movies were approximately 90 percent drama to 10 percent boxing, and audiences, for the most part, flocked to see them.
BBC's The Gamechangers takes the Rocky approach to Grand Theft Auto - specifically, the making of 2004's hit sequel San Andreas, the controversy surrounding a hidden sex scene on the disc, and the legal tussle that followed. In its dramatisation of real events,...

It's fair to say that Rockstar Games - the developer behind Grand Theft Auto - isn't happy with the BBC for making The Gamechangers.

Video gaming isn't the subject of many films (and we're not talking Pixels), but considering that Grand Theft Auto V became one of the world's best-selling entertainment products ever in 2013, it was only a matter of time.
Daniel Radcliffe sports a beard that his old mate Hagrid would be proud of as Rockstar producer Sam Houser in this one-off BBC film, which follows the company's difficult encounters while developing San Andreas back in 2002.
The film makes it very clear that it is in no way authorised by Rockstar, and so one can expect a certain degree of poetic licence in this tale of a bunch of white Brits making a game steeped in black American culture.
Director Owen Harris and writer James Wood must have been influenced by The Social Network in some way or another. David Fincher's 2010 film focused on another tech genius as he created something the whole world would eventually want.

New images show Radcliffe leading the drama as Rockstar co-founder and president Sam Houser.
The TV film dramatises the famous transatlantic censorship battle over the popular video game franchise.

Daniel Radcliffe showed his glam side after revealing that he'd choose to go on Strictly Come Dancing over any other reality show - but only to make his mum and dad proud.
Sadly for Strictly fans though, while the Harry Potter actor showed a fondness for the show, he made it clear he won't be heading to the ballroom anytime soon.
When asked which reality show he'd choose to go on, Radcliffe told Radio Times: "I guess Strictly, because at least my mum and dad would be proud."
He quickly added: "But it's not an option!"
Speaking about other TV, the 26-year-old went on to say: "The show I miss when I'm away, weirdly, is Come Dine with Me.
"I watch a lot of it. It's all down to the voiceover guy, Dave Lamb. Other versions in different countries just aren't as good."

Game Changer, the 90-minute Grand Theft Auto docu-drama in the works at BBC, is set to chart the heated court battle between anti-game lawyer Jack Thompson (Bill Paxton) and Sam Houser – brother to Dan Houser – one of the masterminds behind Rockstar’s genre-defining blockbuster.
Primarily centering around the two leads, Polygon has unearthed the first stills from the set in Cape Town, which showcase Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe sporting a beard as the former brother. For the documentary, the 25-year-old actor will take a stand against Bill Paxton’s peeved lawyer, who believes the entire Grand Theft Auto franchise should be disbanded due to its excessive – and, arguably, gratuitous – violence.
But it is a real-life murder that will act as the crux of Game Changer. In 2005, Devin Moore was shot and killed by three police officers, and soon thereafter Thompson attributed part of the blame...

Rockstar Games has filed a lawsuit against the BBC in London this week for trademark infringement in relation to the British broadcaster’s upcoming telemovie "Game Changer".
The film is said to deal with the real-life conflict between Rockstar President Sam Houser (Daniel Radcliffe) and American lawyer Jack Thompson (Bill Paxton). Filming on the project began just over a month ago and is currently scheduled to broadcast later in year.
Rockstar has issued a statement about the lawsuit to IGN, saying:

The film is said to deal with the real-life conflict between Rockstar President Sam Houser (Daniel Radcliffe) and American lawyer Jack Thompson (Bill Paxton). Filming on the project began just over a month ago and is currently scheduled to broadcast later in year.
Rockstar has issued a statement about the lawsuit to IGN, saying:

Rockstar is taking legal action against the BBC over its upcoming Grand Theft Auto drama.
Game Changer, which revolves around the court battles between Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar and Miami lawyer Jack Thompson, is in danger of being derailed due to a trademark lawsuit of its own filed against the BBC by Rockstar.
Grand Theft Auto publisher Take-Two told IGN that the company has tried to resolve the issue with the BBC to no avail.
"While holders of the trademarks are referenced in the film title and its promotion, Rockstar Games has had no involvement with this project," it said.
"Our goal is to ensure that our trademarks are not misused in the BBC's pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events related to Rockstar Games.
"We have attempted multiple times to resolve this matter with the BBC without any meaningful resolution.

This week, Variety reported on a study that was released confirming what many already know about the film industry, or at the very least anecdotally: Women are having an increasingly hard time breaking in.
The study showed that there’s a large gender gap between independently financed and directed projects by women when compared to projects within the studio system. The Sundance Institute and Women in Film looked at movies in competition at Sundance between 2002 and 2014 compared to the top 1300 grossing films between the same time period. Men appeared at Sundance at a ratio of 3 to 1 more often than women, but an even more staggering 23 to 1 when looking at studio films.
Further, half of the industry executives surveyed believed that films directed by women did not appeal as broadly as films directed by men. A quarter of those surveyed added that they shared a “perceived lack of ambition” in women directors,...

The first pictures from Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy's Victor Frankenstein are here.
The pair are seen in Victorian dress in Empire's behind-the-scenes photos from the film, which sees McAvoy play the title role and Radcliffe appear as his assistant Igor.
Radcliffe sports long hair for the role, and previously joked that he had trouble maintaining his hair extensions during filming.
Lucky Number Slevin's Paul McGuigan has directed the fantasy film, which also stars Jessica Brown Findlay, Andrew Scott and Mark Gatiss.
Victor Frankenstein will be released on September 25 in the UK and on October 2 in the Us.
Meanwhile, Radcliffe has been cast in the BBC's forthcoming Grand Theft Auto drama.

Daniel Radcliffe’s place among the Grand Theft Auto drama – set to be entitled Game Changer – has been confirmed, BBC Films announced today. As we reported last week, the Horns star will join the project as Sam Houser, one half of prestigious developer Rockstar Games and the man who become embroiled in a legal battle with Jack Thompson over the issue of video game violence.
BBC Films has tapped Bill Paxton to portray the lawyer in the forthcoming feature, which will largely be based on David Kushner’s novel, Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft Auto.
Since its inception in 1997, Rockstar’s GTA has been no stranger to controversy, with may pointing fingers for the alleged glorification of violence. It’s a matter that Thompson took umbrage with in the early years of the 21st century, calling for the game to be removed from shelves indefinitely. Over the course of his campaign,...

Game on, Harry Potter. Daniel Radcliffe has signed on to play Sam Houser, one of the British video game developers behind the hit "Grand Theft Auto" series, in a new BBC TV movie.
According to Variety, the 90-minute drama currently has the working title "Game Changer." (Too close to the political book/TV movie "Game Change"?) Bill Paxton will star opposite DanRad as lawyer Jack Thompson, who is determined to do whatever he can to stop the relentless rise of "Grand Theft Auto."
So the TV movie will follow both the mega-successful game developers and the moral campaigners who oppose the gameplay, which glamorizes violence and the criminal underworld. It should be pretty fascinating. The script was written by James Wood ("Rev, "Ambassadors"), and directed by Owen Harris ("Misfits"). No word yet on when this might air, but we'll keep an eye on it.
