Though our younger viewers may know her better for her friendship with Kim Kardashian, the spotlight shone brightly on Paris Hilton, especially in the early 2000s. But was she just “famous for being famous”, or is there more to this Paparazzi Princess?
Like her friend Kim, Paris Hilton’s fame was bolstered by the infamy that comes from being the star of a wildly popular
sex tape, 2004’s cleverly-titled 1 Night in Paris. “That’s Hot.” As with Kim Kardashian, questions remain even decades later about whether the video was released intentionally to capitalize on her growing fame. For her part, Paris has since denied consenting to the video’s release and has settled out-of-court for the damage to her image and reputation. Perhaps the grossest thing about the video (bear with me) is that it opens with a title card that says “In memory of 9/11/01… We will never forget.” Seriously.

Barry Sonnenfeld's 1991 film "The Addams Family," based on the New Yorker comic strips by Chas Addams and extrapolated from the 1964 sitcom of the same name, was a pop culture clarion call for aspiring young goths the world over. The Addams Family were a gaggle of murderous weirds who lived in a haunted mansion, kept a severed human hand as a pet, and regularly engaged in cute family games wherein they exhumed long-dead relatives. They loved blood, sex, and magic. It's possible they were immortal; the young Wednesday (Christina Ricci) regularly murdered her brother Pugsley (Jimmy Workman). Morticia (Anjelica Huston) and Gomez (Raul Julia) were sexually active to an enviable degree, perhaps standing as one of the healthiest, most sex-positive couples in movies at the time. They were full of zest and joie de vivre. Only they were obsessed with death, so perhaps the term should be joie de mourir.

Joe Perry of Aerosmith was asked to name his favorite Beatles song and he picked a classic track from The White Album. The tune in question doesn’t sound much like Aerosmith’s hits, but it was innovative nonetheless. Perry also revealed what he thought when he heard that one of The Beatles died.
Aerosmith’s Joe Perry loved a fusion song from The Beatles’ ‘The White Album’
During a 2009 interview with Cleveland.com, Perry named his favorite Beatles song: “Tomorrow Never Knows,” from The White Album. “Tomorrow Never Knows” is one of the most famous examples of raga rock, a genre fusing Indian classical music with Western rock ‘n’ roll. While “Tomorrow Never Knows” is distinct from Aerosmith’s hits, Aerosmith did experiment with raga rock on their album Nine Lives.
Perry explained why the Fab Four are so important. “The Beatles did everything long before anyone else,” he opined.

Inside No. 9, one of the best anthology series in recent years, returns with a seventh installment. Creators and co-stars Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton are back to make audiences laugh and shiver with these six diverse tales of various genres. And fans of the eerie and unexplained will surely enjoy this new batch of stories.
The season opens with “Merrily, Merrily”, which features one of the show’s most unconventional settings. After having not seen one another for some time, friends reunite at a lake, where they must paddle on a pedalo to reach their destination. As to be expected among friends who’ve lost touch over the years, arguments erupt. However, the worst of their reunion has yet to come — now their paddle boat is stuck in the middle of the lake. From there Inside No. 9 toys with the audience, playing on their expectations in the best way possible.

When watching Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke in Raymond & Ray, so comfortably and authentically playing off each other as a pair of half-brothers who have been emotionally messed up by their late father, it’s almost impossible to believe they’ve never worked together before, let alone aren’t related in some way.
They have Rodrigo Garcia to thank for the introduction, and they in turn have repaid the filmmaker known for his portraits of complex women in films like Nine Lives and Albert Nobbs with a winning delve into contemporary masculinity and all its quirks that is as tenderly observed as it is laugh-out-loud funny. Viewers should find plenty to enjoy, not to mention to identify with, when the Apple original film, which had its debut at TIFF, arrives October 21 on the streamer as well as in select theaters.

New York Times bestselling thriller author Peter Swanson is continually praised for his encyclopedic knowledge of mysteries and his virtuosic execution of the craft. He playfully ups the ante with a different homage in each new release, exploring a different element of the genre's world. In his New York Times bestseller "Eight Perfect Murders," he pays tribute to literary legends Agatha Christie, Patricia Highsmith, Ira Levin, and more, diving deep into their tropes to come up for air with something fully new and enthralling. In his forthcoming thriller published by HarperCollins Publishers's imprint William Morrow, "Nine Lives" ($22), he turns his lens to Christie's "And Then There Were None" to produce an entirely fresh, riveting, and obsession-worthy story of nine strangers who receive a cryptic list with their names on it - and then begin to die in highly unusual circumstances. It's perfectly Peter Swanson.

While we're sad about the current state of Oscar we still have 93 other years of Oscar history to obsess over. So I'm happy to share that I was invited back for a final appearance on "The One-Inch Barrier". Juan Carlos Ojano's podcast has looked at every Oscar race for Best International Feature Film while moving backward in time. Well almost every. There's still a few episodes to go. For this episode Juan Carlos and I talked about the nominated films of 1957 including The Gates of Paris (France), the noir The Devil Strikes at Night (Germany), the musical melodrama Mother India (India), the WW II survival drama Nine Lives (Norway), and the winning film Federico Fellini's enchanting Nights of Cabiria (Italy).
Ingmar Bergman's influential early classic The Seventh Seal was also submitted for the Oscars that year but the Academy unwisely passed. I have words about that.

My dad was a force of nature.
Anyone who was in his presence would feel it immediately. Some would be awestruck, others giddy and almost all would get tongue-tied. And then something remarkable would happen. He would take their hand or touch their arm and fix them with a gaze so warm and so present it would bring them back to themselves, to
the moment.
I never understood the alchemy that allowed him to be both otherworldly and simultaneously so incredibly down-to-earth. He was magic. The rarest of humans that could make you feel like you were in the presence of both a king and your favorite friend. It’s this quality that drew the world to him, and I think, at least in part, it’s why we are collectively heartbroken by his passing.
His life was so prolific and so public that there is little I can tell...

My Opioid Teacher: Garcia Tackles Addiction in Hokey Reunion with Close
Films dealing with drug addiction may have evolved considering the changing landscape of substance abuse, but a historical pratfall has often included an aura of emotional exploitation, particularly in examples from well-heeled sources. Rodrigo Garcia throws his hat into the ring with his latest feature, Four Good Days, co-written by Eli Saslow and headlined by Glenn Close, who assisted in bolstering the director’s repute in early films like Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her (2000) and Nine Lives (2005).

“Four Good Days” is a hideously overwrought slice of the life of an addict, and her codependent mother, from the opening frames of Mila Kunis gleaning her toothless, rotten gums after showing up unannounced and shaking on Glenn Close’s doorstep, to a climactic meltdown involving Kunis screaming “I need your pee!” to a paralyzed, enabling Close. The fact that this emerged from a harrowing, true-life Washington Post article by co-screenwriter Eli Saslow can’t disguise the over-the-top elements of the movie (from Close’s bizarre wig to Kunis’ twitchy performance) that feel ripped from fiction and ooze obvious staginess, the feint of actorly transformation.
And what of the disappointing fact that it was directed by Rodrigo García, a master chronicler of interior lives, from “In Treatment” to “Nine Lives”? Despite Close’s valiant efforts, .
When “Four Good Days” begins, we meet an unrecognizable Mila Kunis as Molly. She’s...

William Dalrymple’s best-selling historical book on colonialism “The Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India Company,” is being adapted into a series by independent studio Wiip and India’s Roy Kapur Films.
Set during 1599 to 1802, “The Anarchy” traces the ascent of The East India Company against the decline and fall of the Mughal Empire. It provides an account of how a provincial trading start-up, run by 30 people from an office in a nondescript London building, became rulers of an entire sub-continent. The novel was listed by former U.S. President Barack Obama as among his top 10 recommended books of 2019.
Roy Kapur Films acquired rights to the book in June. Executive producers on the project include Wiip’s Paul Lee (“Dickinson”) and Mark Roybal (“No Country for Old Men”), Roy Kapur Films’ Siddharth Roy Kapur (“Dangal”) and XPat Productions’ Naz Haider and Siva Natarajan.

In 2004, Bonnie Raitt teamed up with Toots Hibbert for a joyous cover of his reggae classic “True Love is Hard to Find.” It was a huge moment for Raitt, who had been a major fan of Toots & the Maytals since she heard him on the soundtrack to The Harder They Come in the early 1970s; she also covered “True Love” on her own album Nine Lives in 1986. That cover led her and Hibbert to become friends. Their 2004 collaboration was the first of several, including a new version of Hibbert’s 1976 song “Premature,...

Ralph Fiennes has been confirmed to star in London’s Bridge Theatre production of new David Hare play Beat the Devil with a target opening night in September or October.
The timeline is dependent on the UK government’s approval of a re-opening plan to allow indoor performances with strict socially distanced audiences. If the plan proves overly optimistic, the Bridge says it will automatically refund ticket purchases.
In a statement released by Bridge Theatre management, the company said, “We are hoping that we will get the green light to open with a reduced capacity of 250 seats and stringent safety measures, and we are inviting audiences from today to book seats with the assurance that, of course, if the season is delayed there will be automatic refunds for any performances that can’t go ahead.”

Jack Osbourne was supposed to go to SXSW last month for the premiere of “The Nine Lives of Ozzy Osbourne,” a documentary about his dad that he produced, before the festival was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. “We had a children’s choir that was going to sing ‘Crazy Train,’” Jack says on Thursday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast “The Big Ticket.” “I’m so heartbroken that we couldn’t do it.”
The film, which will debut on A&e this summer, details the Black Sabbath rocker’s long battle with addiction, run-ins with the law and marital problems with wife Sharon. They were in the midst of filming when Ozzy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease — something Jack had to convince his parents to include in the doc because they hadn’t yet gone public with the news.
