The Advanced Imaging Society announced its 2024 Lumiere Award winners on Friday, with Oscars frontrunners “Oppenheimer” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” among the honorees.
This year’s Lumiere Awards celebrated “Masters and Magic,” according to a press release from the Advanced Imaging Society, and recognized “distinguished directors and professionals in film, television, and emerging media” as “voted for by members of the Hollywood creative and technology community.”
“Our awards have humorously been called the Oscars for geeks,” said Jim Chabin, the president of the Advanced Imaging Society, in a statement. “In 2023, amidst the industry’s chaos, we witnessed the culmination of years of dedication and sudden bursts of creativity. That work is so important to all of us who love film and television. The Lumiere winners of this year have notably expanded the boundaries of technology in filmmaking, enriching storytelling in remarkable ways.”

The use – and misuse – of artificial intelligence has never been as hot and controversial of a topic as it is now. Innocent fun can be had creating images of outlandish scenarios, but it has become far more of a threat around the world – and we’re not talking about selling dental plans. Now, it has gone all the way to the Oval Office. No, President Joe Biden isn’t concerned that his Hall of Presidents animatronic will come to life and kill everybody in Liberty Square; rather, it was a screening of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One that pushed him to fear the consequences even more than he already did.
According to deputy White House chief of staff Bruce Reed (as per Associated Press), Joe Biden’s Dead Reckoning showing at Camp David may have offered a turning point. “If he hadn’t already been concerned about what...

President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Monday implementing standards and security measures in response to the rapid development of artificial intelligence. Though there were already a myriad of reasons for Biden to be concerned about AI, watching Tom Cruise go up against an advanced AI called “the Entity” in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One apparently helped put him over the top.
As deputy White House chief of staff Bruce Reed told The Associated Press, Biden’s concern about AI only grew after taking in the film at Camp David. “If he hadn’t already been concerned about what could go wrong with AI before that movie, he saw plenty more to worry about,” said Reed, who watched Dead Reckoning with Biden.

An incredibly difficult shoot, a once-in-a-generation pandemic, and multiple release date delays as the industry tried to get back on its feet all contributed to the feeling that "Mission: Impossible -- Dead Reckoning" has been in the works for an unfathomably lengthy amount of time. That's not entirely untrue, of course, as production began in earnest back in 2020 and even overlapped with filming of certain parts of the sequel. With the benefit of hindsight, although the film perhaps doesn't reach the same highs as 2018's "Fallout," it still feels like a minor miracle that the movie managed to overcome all of those obstacles, make it into theaters, and be as entertaining as it was.
For director Chris McQuarrie and star Tom Cruise, however, the ambitious blockbuster represented something even more meaningful. Aside from Cruise's defiance of death with yet another wildly dangerous stunt, "Dead Reckoning" provided the perfect opportunity...

Oscar-winning director Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) is planning to head into production on his latest film, a survival thriller formerly known as Origin of the Species and now going by the title Eden, at the end of November – and with just weeks to go before cameras start rolling, Howard has rounded out his lead cast with Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning) and Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria).
Kirby and Sweeney are taking over roles that were previously assigned to Alicia Vikander and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Their co-stars include Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes), Ana de Armas (Knives Out), and Daniel Bruhl (The Alienist). Howard had a solid cast put together before Vikander and Edgar-Jones dropped out, and the cast remains strong with Kirby and Sweeney as their replacements.

Hollywood moviemaking has always been a numbers game, and right now the winning number appears to be two.
Zack Snyder is locking picture on part one of December’s Rebel Moon, his two-part space opera for Netflix. Christopher McQuarrie, the filmmaker behind Paramount and Skydance’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One, retreated to a house in the northeast in recent months to edit what he’s shot so far of his follow-up. And once the SAG-AFTRA strike ends, Wicked filmmaker Jon M. Chu has just a few days left of principal photography on the first of his two Broadway adaptations. Then there’s Dune: Part Two (delayed by the strike until March), a sequel to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (no release date in sight) and Kevin Costner’s two-part western Horizon, hitting theaters six weeks apart next summer.
These two-parters can serve both art and commerce, say those who work on them.

Get ready for the dominoes to start falling in earnest as studios race to rearrange their 2024 theatrical release calendars amid the ongoing actors’ strike.
Disney on Friday announced it is delaying the release of its live-action Snow White movie starring Rachel Zegler by a year from March 22, 2024 to March 21, 2025. The film, which is officially titled Disney’s Snow White, is among the studio’s biggest offerings of the year, and is one of the anchors of its spring slate.
The other spring anchor is Pixar’s March animated tentpole Elio, which is being pushed back by more than a year, from March 1, 2024 to June 13, 2025.
In a move unrelated to the strike, Disney and Searchlight have removed Magazine Dreams starring Jonathan Majors from the December 2023 calendar. The decision was widely expected due to Majors’ legal troubles. He is due to stand trial Nov. 29 in New York for misdemeanor harassment and assault charges.

“Oppenheimer” just exploded IMAX’s third-quarter earnings.
IMAX turned a profit ($12 million) in Q3 2023, the first time it could make that claim for the summer quarter since Covid. (IMAX has now turned a profit for four straight quarters.)
IMAX’s Q3 revenue soared 51 percent from July to September, the company’s second-highest-grossing quarter of all time at the global box office. Its adjusted Ebitda jumped 174 percent to a record-high $45 million.
“Oppenheimer” alone brought in $180 million at the global IMAX box office. “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” also chipped in. All-in, IMAX’s Q3 global box-office haul was $347 million.
While the seventh “Mission: Impossible” (which opened July 12) had a 9-day head start on “Oppenheimer”, Christopher Nolan’s epic snatched all Tom Cruise’s North American IMAX screens upon premiere.

The mission will remain impossible to see for another year. The eighth “Mission: Impossible” film in the Tom Cruise action series, which is dropping the previously announced “Dead Reckoning Part Two” from its title, has been delayed from 2024 to 2025, as part of a sweeping shift in Paramount Pictures’ upcoming release schedule.
The direct follow-up to this July’s “Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Part Two” was initially scheduled to premiere June 28, 2024, just 11 months after its direct predecessor’s release. It will now be released May 23, 2025, almost a full year after its initial date.
The “Mission: Impossible” sequel faces the most significant delay, but it’s not the only big ticket item on Paramount’s slate to get majorly pushed back. The film takes the release date previously held by a fourth feature film spinoff of the “Spongebob Squarepants” Nickelodeon animated series. That currently untitled project will now premiere seven months later,...

Tom Cruise’s next Mission: Impossible movie is departing the 2024 box office calendar. The eighth installment in the action spy franchise appears to be dropping the second half of its previous title, Dead Reckoning, Part Two, with a new title expected to be announced at a later date.
Paramount and Skydance have pushed back the film back to May 23, 2025, off its previous date of June 28, 2024. The feature shut down production to allow for star Cruise and the cast to promote Dead Reckoning, Part 1. Then the SAG-AFTRA strike hit in mid-July, which meant the cast could not return to work on the film, which hails from director Christopher McQuarrie.
More tentpoles are likely to flee next year if the strike isn’t resolved in the next few weeks.
M:i 8 follows a bumpy box office ride for Dead Reckoning, Part 1, which bowed in July and grossed $567.5 million globally.

The Hollywood strikes may be drawing to a close; but for many 2024 films, avoiding delays may be the real mission impossible for Dead Reckoning Part 2.
As the title suggests, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two is the sequel to 2023's Dead Reckoning directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise in his perennial role as Ethan Hunt.
The film was originally set to release on June 23, 2024, and still holds that date. However, a new update suggests audiences may have to wait for Mission: Impossible 8.

A funny thing happened this summer: Movies weren’t in such a hurry to be seen at home. The average theatrical window for films released from May through June will end up more than 40 days — a significant increase compared to January-April, when the theatrical window fell to an average of 30 days.
Is this a trend? Probably, but not the one that theaters might hope for: It means we might expect theatrical windows to rise and fall based on seasonality and other circumstances. It’s a flexibility that works for studios trying to maximize their revenue streams. For theaters trying to do the same, or for a public that would like to be less confused about where and when they can see a film? Not so much.
Pre-covid, it was close to inviolate that PVOD waited at least 70 days; reduced-price VOD happened after three months. Of the 33 wide-release films this summer,...

Exclusive: Skydance’s long-in-development Bermuda Triangle action-adventure pic Bermuda has landed a director as Marc Webb has closed a deal to helm the project.
While the studio has been working on the project for some time, this version is still in early days with no writer has been attached; until the WGA strike ends, that won’t change. Insiders add that once the strike ends and a writer can be attached, Webb would consult on the script but is not expected to co-write.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, except for the fact that it will be set in the mysterious patch of the Caribbean where planes and ships have gone missing over the years.
David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce Bermuda for Skydance. Aimee Rivera will oversee for Skydance.

"Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" may not have been the hit that Paramount Pictures was counting on, but the sequel has been handed a major lifeline. Tom Cruise's latest, which hit theaters back in July, was one of the biggest blockbusters of the summer in every sense. Thanks largely to delays and other expenses incurred by the pandemic, the budget rose to an eye-melting $290 million. Fortunately for Paramount, they've now got a huge chunk of that back, thanks to a successful lawsuit.
As reported by The Times, Paramount has confirmed it received a £57 million payout from Swiss insurance firm Chubb. That equates to about $71 million. Paramount had a $100 million insurance policy with Federal Insurance Company, a unit within Chubb's larger corporate umbrella. Director Christopher McQuarrie and the rest of the crew were forced to shut down production several times while filming "Dead Reckoning" due to pandemic-related issues.

Some franchises just can’t help themselves when it comes to bringing characters back from the dead (I’m looking at you Fast & Furious), but for the most part, the dead stay dead on Mission: Impossible. However, that doesn’t mean that characters can’t return in other ways, and Christopher McQuarrie told the Empire Spoiler Podcast (via ComicBook.com) that he was considering bringing back Alec Baldwin for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
Alec Baldwin played CIA director Alan Hunley in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation before becoming Imf Secretary in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Hunley was killed off in Fallout, but Christopher McQuarrie had a plan to include Alec Baldwin in a Dead Reckoning flashback scene, which would have opened the movie.

You didn't think we were done with fresh tidbits and new reveals coming out of "Mission: Impossible -- Dead Reckoning" just because the film is wrapping up its theatrical run and headed towards its home release, did you? I mean, as Ethan Hunt once memorably stated early on in "Fallout," "What's done is done when we say it's done." That's never felt more true than with the recently-released Empire podcast spoiler special dedicated to all things "Dead Reckoning."
This podcast has already uncovered a host of juicy details, as a result of Empire host Chris Hewitt's marathon-like interview with director Chris McQuarrie. Last time, we heard more insights into plans for a de-aging sequence that originally was meant to open the film in style, but fans have been anxiously awaiting the next installment of the series as the conversation's been split up over multiple parts and slowly parceled out...

Alec Baldwin's Alan Hunley was a great addition to the "Mission: Impossible" franchise. He went from a firm antagonist of the Imf to a dyed-in-the-wool believer, won over by Ethan Hunt being the human manifestation of destiny. Sadly, Hunley was killed off in the pulse-pounding "Mission: Impossible — Fallout," which meant that he wasn't around for the most recent entry, "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One."
But there was almost an alternate universe where Baldwin returned for a cameo. Hunley wouldn't be a zombie in this scenario but rather would appear via flashback to a time when he was still among the living. "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning" director Christopher McQuarrie revealed the abandoned plans, and added that there was even a chance that Hunley would be a kind of "spirit guide" to Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt.

The Mission Impossible film series has to be one of the most exciting experiences ever, as it represents the very core of why the world loves Tom Cruise, and that is because he is batshit crazy, and goes out of his way to try and kill himself with more and more dangerous stunts just to make the audience happy. After nearly thirty years Tom Cruise and Mission Impossible film series are still going strong and now it seems that this new Mi film is the beginning of the end, as it is rumored that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is the first part of a two-part finale that will end the Mission Impossible film series.

In addition to the chaos of the strikes, Hollywood is facing a moment of reckoning after some of the costliest franchise installments in history were washed out to sea at the 2023 summer box office, while such original fare as Barbie and Oppenheimer created a surprise cultural tsunami.
A box office aficionado would have to go back years, if not decades, to find another summer where two of the five top-grossing movies in North America were fresh and original nonfranchise tentpoles. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie tops the 2023 season with a current domestic haul north of $600 million and more than $1.38 billion worldwide. The movie has shattered numerous records, including becoming the top-grossing movie in Warner Bros.’ history after passing up the final Harry Potter pic, not adjusted for inflation. And over Labor Day weekend, Barbie became the biggest film of the year to date at the global box office after eclipsing spring blockbuster The Super Mario Bros.
A box office aficionado would have to go back years, if not decades, to find another summer where two of the five top-grossing movies in North America were fresh and original nonfranchise tentpoles. Adagio, as many musicians know, means “slowly” in Italian. That seems to be one of the guiding principles in this epic slow-burn crime thriller from director Stefano Sollima, who’s known for helming the lauded TV series Gomorrah and ZeroZeroZero, as well as taking on Hollywood jobs like the actioners Without Remorse and Sicario: Day of the Soldado.
He certainly has style to boot, and this very Heat-like story, which takes place in parts of Rome rarely seen in mainstream movies, is loaded with ambience, as well as brawny performances by a triumvirate of Italy’s best working actors: Pierfrancesco Favino, Toni Servillo and Valerio Mastandrea. What it lacks, however, is a gripping and original plot, as well as enough dazzling set pieces to make all the late exposition worthwhile.
Premiering in competition in Venice, Adagio will likely be a local hit, with Sollima delivering the kind of Michael Mann...

Tom Cruise is best known for Top Gun and Mission: Impossible. The latter is his most prominent work that spawned multiple sequels. Cruise is not afraid to film the more physical scenes in the series regardless of the risks. The stunts can be dangerous, and Cruise suffered an injury on the set of Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout is the sixth film in the widely-known Mission: Impossible franchise. Like previous installments, the movie was a box-office hit. It gained over $791 million in revenue worldwide, making it the most successful in the series. The cast of Fallout includes a few recognizable names.
For instance, Simon Pegg and Henry Cavill star in the film. Cruise returns to reprise his role as the main character Ethan Hunt. In the movie, fans meet up with Ethan two years after the capture of Solomon.

If you had a gun to your head and had to answer candidly, what would you say is the best action movie franchise of the 21st century? While John Wick is quickly climbing the ranks and a real argument for the Fast and Furious can be made, when it comes to jaw-dropping stunts and eye-popping setpieces that continue to get better each time out, it’s hard to top what Tom Cruise has been able to achieve with the Mission: Impossible franchise. Indeed, while early results from directors like Brian De Palma and John Woo might be varied, Tom Cruise has remained the one constant and used his superstar wattage to help everyone from JJ Abrams to Brad Bird retain his own stamp while improving the overall quality of the franchise. With that in mind, the collaboration between Cruise and writer/director Christopher McQuarrie has catapulted the Mission Impossible Franchise...

Much attention has been paid to "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" and its performance at the box office. More specifically, the movie is performing relatviely well, at least compared to its gigantic $300 million budget. In short, the seventh entry in the long-running action series fell at least a little short of expectations, which were admittedly sky-high. Even so, Tom Cruise's latest adventure as Ethan Hunt still quietly pushed the franchise past an important milestone.
The "Mission: Impossible" series has now cumulatively crossed the $4 billion mark at the global box office. According to The Numbers, the seven films have collectively taken in $4.11 billion to date, including the $541.8 million earned by "Dead Reckoning, Part One" so far. That averages out to $588.3 million per entry, with an average budget of $159 million per entry. Even though the budget for this latest installment was greatly inflated, it's easy to see why Paramount...

Last weekend, "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" was creeping up on the half-billion mark at the worldwide box office with a running total of $493 million. Now, the latest installment in the Tom Cruise-led franchise has passed that milestone, but the fact that it took a week to do it is not a great sign. Per Deadline, the global total will be $522.4 million through Sunday, with $159.55 million of that from domestic ticket sales.
"Dead Reckoning" is on its fifth weekend, whereas the previous entry in the series, "Mission: Impossible - Fallout," crossed $500 million on its fourth weekend -- crucially, before it had even released in China. The Chinese box office ultimately added another $181 million to the global total for "Fallout," which rounded out at $791.1 million by the time it left theaters. Meanwhile, "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" has been in theaters across all major markets worldwide for weeks,...

After taking over the reins of the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, director Chris McQuarrie quickly put his own stamp on the series. From 2015's "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" to 2023's "Dead Reckoning Part One," McQuarrie's take on the series has brought it back to its roots in creating heightened, suspenseful espionage scenarios. It's also made the movies even bigger.
The stunts of Ethan Hunt are one aspect in which the series has to consistently top itself. But for McQuarrie, it's also important that each movie embraces a different kind of spectacular filmmaking, something spontaneous and creative that goes beyond simple James Bond-esque globetrotting gunfights and car chases. Because of that impulse, he might have gone too far with a scene in 2018's "Mission: Impossible - Fallout," which is probably why it didn't make the final cut.
The scene in question would have involved the introduction of Alanna Mitsopolis (Vanessa Kirby), or the White Widow,...

The spy-action genre of movies is already filled with a ridiculously high number of entries; therefore, for newer releases to even have a chance at staying relevant, an out-of-the-box element is required. The recently released Netflix spy caper Heart Of Stone strictly follows the copybook method of building and resolving intrigue and, as a result, refrains from venturing into riskier territory. Revolving around a secret espionage agency and an overpowered AI tool that could be the key to world domination, the movie treads a very familiar track throughout. With that being said, narrative structure-wise, the easily discernible similarities allow viewers to point out a number of movies and series it has taken inspiration from, a lot of which we think you might enjoy if you liked Heart Of Stone.

It’s turning out to be quite a summer for superspies and supercomputers.
A month after the action feast of “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part I”, in which Tom Cruise faced off with an AI supervillain called “the Entity,” comes a very “Mi”-like international espionage thriller with an equally fancy and powerful machine.
“Heart of Stone” stars Gal Gadot as Rachel Stone, an agent for an elite and clandestine intelligence agency called the Charter. Like “Mission: Impossible”, “Heart of Stone” hits glamorous global destinations and features lengthy actions sequence including a wingsuit skydive.

In July, Tom Cruise‘s latest foray as Ethan Hunt, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” crashed into movie theaters like a runaway train, taking advantage of the fact it could get premium formats before the unstoppable “Barbenheimer” was unleashed.
Much of the narrative following “Dead Reckoning’s” opening weekend of $54.7 million is that it wasn’t performing up to spec, though one has to remember that it made another $23.8 million before the weekend for a five-day opening of $78.5 million. Although the weekend part was lower than the $61.2 million the previous “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” opened with in 2018, it was more than every previous “Mission: Impossible” movie.

Review: We have entered the strange period of the SAG-AFTRA strike, where big movies are being released with minimal marketing from the film stars. At any other time, Heart of Stone would get a substantial push on every platform you can imagine. Instead, there are a few interviews filmed several weeks in advance that try to promote the new film. With Wonder Woman herself in the lead, Heart of Stone is designed to be Netflix‘s equivalent of Mission: Impossible, even boasting their shared producers in the trailers. While the film shares more in common with the James Bond franchise, some spectacular chase sequences echo the most recent entries in Tom Cruise’s hit franchise. Though the summer of 2023 has long since become the summer of "Barbenheimer," it's also the summer offering the best action film of the year, "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One." The Tom Cruise-starring seventh entry in the "M:i" franchise is as propulsive and thrilling as any other of the series' installments, full of globe-trotting action, jaw-dropping stunts, unexpected twists, and a disturbingly relevant villain in the form of artificial intelligence. It is -- perhaps fittingly -- all but impossible to not think about the "Mission: Impossible" series, especially its most recent title, while watching the new Netflix actioner "Heart of Stone." No one from "Dead Reckoning" shows up here, but there is a distinct bargain-basement feel to "Heart of Stone...

Netflix tries muscling in on the Mission: Impossible game with the adrenaline-charged spy thriller Heart of Stone, built as a vehicle for Gal Gadot (one of the producers) to swap superheroics for a more earthbound combo of brains, tech savvy, instinct and formidable fight skills. While it’s a few notches up from the Wonder Woman star’s last action romp for the streamer, Red Notice, it feels only marginally less manufactured from the spare parts of other movies. But it gets the job done and is sure to pull solid numbers. It doesn’t hurt that Gadot has appealing chemistry with co-star Jamie Dornan.
The timing seems mildly unfortunate given that the most recent M:i installment, Dead Reckoning, hit theaters only a month ago and also revolves around a risibly named AI mega-brain, “The Entity,” which nefarious forces are angling to control.

Business-wise, "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One" may have been a slight victim of the Barbenheimer phenomenon, but that didn't mean that Christopher McQuarrie's third entry in the franchise wasn't another stellar piece of blockbuster entertainment from what is easily the greatest Hollywood franchise going.
Paramount Pictures made the weird decision of opening "Dead Reckoning" just one week before all the premium screens were swallowed up by "Oppenheimer." However, for those of us who did see it on those screens (I actually saw it four times), it blew us away with its impeccable craft, breathless action, and fun, twisty, timely tale of artificial intelligence. When did the “Mission: Impossible” films become action movies? I’m not sure when that happened, but I do know this much: For a series like the one in question, it’s live by the action, die by the action. For a few days there, people were chattering about all the great action in “Dead Reckoning Part One,” talking up the Fiat car chase or that train-dangling-from-a-cliff climax as if we’d never seen a sequence like that one before. But all I could think was, “Don’t we have the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise for that?”
For 27 years, the “Mission: Impossible” films have been dotted with great action. That’s part of what these movies are. In a funny way, though, it can’t be the essence of what they are. Because then, no matter how spectacular Tom Cruise’s latest P.T. Barnum feat of star-in-the-air stunt work is...

“Barbie” continued to reign over the box office, but it lost its beloved “Barbenheimer” marketing partner, as Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” fell to third place in favor of another movie from Warner Bros. Read on for the weekend box office report.
There was no stopping Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” which won its third weekend in a row with an estimated $53 million, a mere drop of 43% in its third weekend to bring its domestic total to $459.4 million. That puts it firmly into the top 25 for all-time domestic grossers. As of now “Barbie” is the year’s second-highest grossing movie in North America, and this weekend it also became the first movie directed solely by a woman to hit a billion worldwide. Now, that’s a glass ceiling worth shattering. This weekend, it made $74 million overseas to bring its international total to $572.3 million.

The man who wrote “Transcendental Style in Film: Ozu, Bresson, Dreyer” was apparently unimpressed with “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.”
Paul Schrader took to his always-colorful Facebook page to write a terse review of Christopher McQuarrie’s latest Tom Cruise blockbuster. The “Master Gardener” director was not a fan of the blockbuster’s script, which he saw as indiscernible from AI writing. (Not to mention the movie’s main villain is a godlike AI.)
“‘Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning.’ Such tiresome claptrap,” Schrader wrote. “There’s no reason that AI, given the correct prompts, could not have written this script.”
While Schrader invoking AI is hardly a compliment, he has been more supportive of computers writing scripts than most of his peers. The Oscar nominee has frequently spoken about what he sees as the potential for AI to replace screenwriters on supposedly lowbrow Hollywood entertainment.

Not streaming, nor strikes, nor shell shock from the pandemic kept this July’s domestic box office down with studio tentpoles and a faith-based surprise movie racking up the second-best record for the month with $1.37 billion per Comscore.

While Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One didn’t quite break the bank as predicted, Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie won’t let it slow a good partnership down. The two have collaborated on a number of Cruise’s latest outings, including the last three Mission: Impossible sequels, Top Gun: Maverick and Jack Reacher. McQuarrie gained recognition with his script for The Usual Suspects, which he parlayed into his debut outing as both the writer and director of a violent, crime thriller with a side of dark comedy titled The Way of the Gun back in 2000.

For the second consecutive week, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie stood tall and claimed the box-office weekend by a margin of $47 million.
During its second weekend in release, Barbie brought in $93 million to easily hold onto the top spot of this week’s top ten. The impressive tally brings the film’s two-week total to an even more impressive $351 million. Meanwhile, also holding steady from last weekend was Oppenheimer which remained in second-place adding $46 million over the weekend to lift its two-week total to $174 million. The first debut of the weekend, Haunted Mansion, claimed third place with $24 million to show for its opening weekend. This pushed Sound of Freedom to fourth place where it added $12 million, bringing its four-week total to $149 million. Also falling a spot was Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, which landed in fifth place with $11 million. This gives the film a three-week total of $139 million.

After just 10 days in theaters, the domestic box office total for Christopher Nolan's biographical thriller "Oppenheimer" has surpassed that of "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One," which has been out for 19 days. This weekend saw the latest entry in the long-running Tom Cruise-led action series lose 1,130 screens as theaters packed their schedules with showings of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer". And Sunday brought more bad news for "Mission: Impossible" when it comes to the screens that matter the most.
As previously reported, Universal Pictures secured a three-week exclusive run for "Oppenheimer" on IMAX screens. Nolan's film was shot entirely on large format film stock with IMAX cameras, and the director is a vocal champion of the format, so it was a natural partnership. But it also meant that "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" would be kicked off IMAX screens entirely after just one week.

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” director Christopher McQuarrie revealed before the film opened in theaters that he rejected de-aging Tom Cruise for a 1989-set opening scene. Now on a new episode of “The Empire Spoiler Special Film Podcast” (via /Film), the filmmaker dropped that he considered reaching out to Julia Roberts to de-age her as well for the scene that never happened as planned.
The scene that made it into the film is a brief flashback that is interspersed throughout the movie. It depicts a young Ethan Hunt (Cruise) watching the villainous Gabriel (Esai Morales) murder his girlfriend, played by Mariela Garriga. McQuarrie looked into de-aging VFX in order to open the film with a more extended scene set around this fateful encounter.
“I said, ‘Ok, if I were doing this sequence, it would be Tom in, say, 1989. It would be Tony Scott’s ‘Mission: Impossible.’ That’s...

We love the "Mission: Impossible" movies, don't we folks? These globe-trotting, death-defying adventures get bigger and better with each installment. At the center of each entry is Ethan Hunt, played by stuntman/actor Tom Cruise. Ethan is our guide into the world of the Imf and their various missions, but he can't do it all by himself. He has a team to back him up, and while the team has changed over the years, there's a core group that stays the same.
There's Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, a hacker turned Imf agent. There's Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, who started off working in a lab and eventually became a field agent. Then there's Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), a former MI6 agent who has more or less joined the Imf due to her friendship with Ethan. There are more team members scattered over the various films, but this is the core group,...

A de-aged Tom Cruise wasn’t the only idea scrapped for “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.”
Christopher McQuarrie, director of this seventh film in the franchise, recently spoke on an Empire Spoiler Special podcast episode (via Slash Film) about how he considered featuring a de-aged Julia Roberts as Impossible Mission Force agent Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) ill-fated lover in a sequence that would’ve taken place circa 1989. McQuarrie previously told Total Film why he scrapped the sequence altogether, feeling “too distracted by how an actor that I had known for however long was now suddenly this young person.”
Now, as he told Empire, Roberts was part of that sequence in a role eventually played by Mariela Garriga in flashback. Through black-and-white callbacks woven throughout the movie, “Dead Reckoning” shows glimpses into Ethan’s life before he joined the Imf, revealing how Ethan was framed for the death of...

The “Barbenheimer” craze that has lifted the box office to rare heights isn’t expected to stop anytime soon, and that could mean bad things for many films on the late summer slate, including Disney’s “Haunted Mansion,” which hits theaters this weekend and is projected to open below “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” with a launch in the low $30 million range.
Based on the beloved Disneyland ride, “Haunted Mansion” was the first major studio release to host a premiere without striking actors, which was particularly notable for this film given its ensemble cast that includes Lakeith Stanfield, Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis and Owen Wilson.
But even having the cast to promote “Haunted Mansion” probably wouldn’t be much help, as the family film is getting mixed reviews with a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
