Like it or not, superhero characters are a part of everyday entertainment nowadays. You don’t need to be a comic book reader anymore to have at least basic knowledge about the most popular superheroes, such as Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman. Even B-list characters such as Guardians of the Galaxy and the Suicide Squad aren’t so unknown among the general audience anymore, thanks to the growing popularity of superhero characters through movies, television series, and video games.
The most popular video games based on Marvel and DC publications today are arguably Rocksteady’s ‘Batman: Arkham’ franchise and Insominac’s ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man’ franchise, but some other video game developers also developed games such as ‘Marvel’s Avengers,’ ‘Gotham Knights,’ and ‘Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.’ Also, many upcoming video games are currently in development.

Female composers are shining bright at the 2023 Grammys.
Germaine Franco won best score soundtrack for visual media for composing Encanto, telling the audience she believes she’s the first woman of color to take home the honor.
That was followed by Stephanie Economou’s win for best score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media — a new award at the Grammys. Economou earned the honor for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok.
Franco and Economou were the solo female nominees in their categories.
Franco beat out Hans Zimmer (No Time to Die), Jonny Greenwood (The Power of the Dog), Nicholas Britell (Succession: Season 3) and Michael Giacchino (The Batman). Economou edged out Bear McCreary (Call of Duty: Vanguard), Richard Jacques (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy), Austin Wintory (Aliens: Fireteam Elite) and Christopher Tin (Old World).

The time has finally come, DC fans. As promised, James Gunn and Peter Safran, the recently appointed co-heads of DC Studios, have laid out their initial plans for the brand-new DC Universe. And yes, to be perfectly clear, it is very much going to be new — not just in terms of characters that we're going to see on screen, but in terms of the overall approach. To that end, video games are going to be a big part of the equation. While no specific video game titles were announced at this time, we did learn how the team will approach games. In short: it's all connected.
At a recent press event attended by /Film's Jenna Busch, Gunn and Safran pulled back the curtain on the first wave of the new Dcu. Speaking about video games, Safran said that "Gaming is a big part of what we're doing, and everything we...

Whether you’re a toonhead or prefer live-action fare, Disney+ UK will surely have something Marvel-ous for you, and that’s because it’s in a prime position to bring you a wider selection of Marvel comic book TV series content than its Us counterpart.
Disney+ UK will feature five seasons of ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and is also streaming Hulu’s Runaways. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of classic Marvel animated series to catch up on, like Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and an opportunity to check out newer planet-hopping adventures with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
There’s also further live-action series waiting in the wings – a Loki standalone series, a team up between Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the debut of Ms Marvel, She-Hulk and Moon Knight, among others, plus an animated What If? show that might have you asking yourself that very question about the possibility of more What If?...

As the September box office attempts to get 2017 back on track*the month is currently up 14% compared to last year*the chapter ends on what was a dismal August 2017 at the domestic box office. August was the fourth month in a row to show a decline compared to the previous year, all of which contributed to the worst Summer movie season in over ten years, in which the total summer gross failed to top $4 billion for the first time since 2006. August 2017 wrapped up as the worst August in twenty years with calendar grosses delivering a combined $657.7 million from 225 movies, 35.5% behind last year's gross and failing to top $700 million for the first time since 2000. Thanks to the continued performance of Annabelle: Creation, which just topped $100 million domestically yesterday, the month did deliver a $100+ million earner, a feat that looked as if it might not happen not too long ago. Annabelle also...

The summer of Wonder Woman isn't over yet, as the DC comic's Amazonian origin story passed another major, historical threshold. After 14 weeks, Wonder Woman remains in the top 15 at theaters, and is second in overall domestic box office this year (just ahead of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). According to Forbes, Wonder Woman also just blew past Iron Man 3 to become the fifth-biggest superhero movie of all-time in North America (after adjusting for inflation).
Let's put this into perspective, only The Dark Knight Rises ($448m), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($459m), The Dark Knight ($534m), and The Avengers ($623m) have performed better at the domestic box office. This is a truly amazing accomplishment for Patty Jenkins (only her second feature film), and Gal Gadot (her first starring role), and DC who's struggled to construct and sustain their extended universe of superhero films (Dceu). With everything Marvel has on television, and it's a lot -- 14 series across 5 networks -- plus growing concerns about viewer fatigue, the big question is why the Inhumans (and why now)? Early reviews of Marvel's Inhumans have been less than kind, suggesting that the series may not survive its first season (ABC is slotting it on Fridays, typically a death slot). Marvel is as opaque as any other entertainment organization, so Cbr went looking for answers but they came away with more questions, unfortunately.
As we like to say at Lrm, there are only a finite number of fans out there (and a limited number of hours per week). Considering that most of the well-known A and B-list heroes were already committed to film and TV franchises, the odds were high that the Inhumans could break through and capture a viable audience. Launching Inhumans now, given competition from other Marvel...

We think it's safe to say that Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 was one of the most highly anticipated movies, let alone sequels, of 2017 - and now that it's finally available to watch at home we couldn't be more thrilled! We've been looking forward to re-watching this one since we first clapped eyes on Baby Groot in the first teaser trailer. The whole crew is back - Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), and our new favourite, Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel). By now, those of you who closely follow news related to comic book movies are well aware of how most Marvel characters fall under Disney’s “Marvel Studios” umbrella when it comes to the world of cinema, with Fox still laying claim to properties like X-Men and Fantastic Four. But what you may not be aware of is the strange saga that’s endured for the past few years that’s seen the publisher sideline some of its most beloved characters due to who’s in charge of film distribution.
At a time when you can walk down a toy aisle at any given retailer and see a myriad of Marvel action figures, odds are you won’t see much of the X-Men or Fantastic Four. Basically, this is a conscious effort to steer consumers of various age groups toward characters appearing in Disney movies. Sure, you may come across...

A huge rumor that has gone around for the past few years has been regarding Marvel Studios and Fox and whether or not Marvel canceled the Fantastic Four comic over film rights. Many people believe it to be true, although Marvel denies it. However, an inside source says otherwise. And while I usually take inside sources with a grain of salt, this one seems pretty reliable.
Jonathan Hickman, who written Fantastic Four comics including some of the best Marvel stories ever, recently came out and addressed the rumor stating that it's true. He confirms that the reason for Marvel canceling the Fantastic Four comic series is all because of the film rights of the characters. In an interview with Newsarama, he had this to say:
"I think it's pretty common knowledge at this point that Marvel isn't publishing Fantastic Four because of their disagreement with Fox. While it bums me out,...

The industry giant is about to notch up a rather impressive achievement later this year, when Thor: Ragnarok will become the third McU instalment of 2017 – after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming, of course. But if Sacha Dhawan (Davos) is to be believed, Iron Fist season 2 will begin filming in December ahead of a possible premiere sometime next year. The same release window that Marvel has purportedly earmarked for new instalments of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and Luke Cage.
It should be noted that Dhawan is simply making an estimation here, and when you consider that Marvel only announced plans for a second season at Sdcc last weekend – replete with a new showrunner, but more on that later – the actor’s comments shouldn’t be taken as gospel. Per Screen Geek:

So far 2017 has really been an embarrassment of riches at the movie theatres, with a multitude of excellent films to choose from! So much so that we've already decided our top ten of the year to date, with many more to come that we're excited for. Sometimes there are just so many movies to see—from highly anticipated blockbuster sequels like Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2, to buzzed-about indies like Get Out—that a true gem can be sadly overlooked.
Which brings us to Free Fire. Set in the 1970s, it takes place inside a warehouse as two criminal groups meet to make an illegal firearms deal. When the deal suddenly goes sideways, it's every man for himself. One of our most anticipated movies of 2017, it mysteriously seemed to come and go without much fanfare.

Whenever a new hero emerges on the theatrical end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you can immediately, and confidently, think to yourself, "Oh yeah, I'll see that character in the next Avengers movie!" Before Doctor Strange made mention of Infinity Stones or had his post-credit scene with Thor, you knew he was destined to join the Avengers. The same went for Ant-Man, pre-Civil War. Even when I first saw Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, it was a certainty, in my mind, that eventually they too would join the Avengers for at least one adventure.
I assumed the same went for the Netflix corner of the McU. It was announced fairly early on, yet it was also very obvious, that the four characters anchoring their own series would all be back for a team-up. The same assumption went for the Punisher, who may not have his own season of a Netflix series until the fall,...

To date, Marvel Studios has 16 released films in their shared universe. And while I have an affinity for all of them (truly, there isn’t a bad one in the bunch) it’s fair now to see the cream rise to the top. Having just finished Spider-Man: Homecoming this past weekend – yes I’m a suburban dad who no longer prioritizes movies as a need-to-see-on-release-day – I think I’m within bounds to pluck out my top five… until I mentioned this idea to Eic Mike Gold who denoted “We have a logo” for picking six. Natch. So, without any further preamble, here are (ranked from bottom to top) my most favoritest Marvel(ous) movies.
Definition time: I’m specifying movies only within the “Marvel Cinematic Universe.” This excludes the X-Men movies, the Fantastic Four movies, the Blade trilogy (which was awesome, honestly) any previous Spider-Man flicks, and sadly Deadpool who...

Chris Evans on adding another film to his Captain America contract for Marvel...
When he was originally cast in the role of Captain America, Chris Evans signed the seemingly-requisite six film deal with Marvel Studios. Towards the end of it, he’d been suggesting that his acting days were coming to an end, and that he wanted to try directing instead. And that led to some doubts as to whether Evans would sign a contract extension, were one to be offered.
Well, one was offered. And Evans did indeed sign it.
There were fairly logistical reasons behind the move, though, and it came about when Marvel decided to split the next Avengers movie – Avengers: Infinity War – into two films.
Chatting to The Telegraph ahead of the UK release of his new film, Gifted, Evans said that "I had six films in my Marvel contract, so I could...

If anything, two of the things Marvel Studios have long excelled at have been plotting out their film slate far in advance and introducing a wide array of characters to moviegoers, effectively making their pantheon of superheroes household names – even those who were previously B-listers. Granted, everyone knows the names of Captain America and the Hulk, but the average man on the street probably would’ve thought you were referring to a certain Black Sabbath song if you said the words “Iron Man” before 2008.
Since then, the likes of Guardians of the Galaxy and Doctor Strange have proven to be surprise hits, with Black Panther starting to build a considerable amount of hype now as well ahead of its release next year. While we wait for the film’s first teaser trailer heralding T’Challa’s solo debut on the silver screen to arrive, we now have a few nuggets...

While it is Diana Prince’s sacred duty to defend the world, it has now become Wonder Woman’s duty to protect the future of DC Comics and the superhero genre in general. That’s thanks to the film’s solid 93 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, positive reviews and $100.5 million in opening weekend ticket sales. It should come as no surprise that a sequel is already being discussed.

Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is easily winning the Memorial Day weekend regatta, while Baywatch, starring man-of-the-moment Dwayne Johnson alongside Zac Efron, is springing leaks in a surprise twist.
Pirates 5, returning Johnny Depp in the lead role as the zany Captain Jack Sparrow, earned roughly $24 million Friday from 4,276 theaters for a projected $75 million-$78 million domestic debut for the four-day holiday weekend. Although a good start, that would mark the lowest opening of any title in the series save for the first film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
Playing in 3,647 theaters, Baywatch took in an estimated $5.7 million Friday for a projected four-day holiday gross of $21 million and total five-day debut of $26 million. Adding insult to injury, Disney and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is...

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the studio's few film franchises that has a recognizable theme. In a landscape full of movies where recognizable themes have all but vanished, it feels like a refreshing and fun throwback to the 1980s — a decade these movies clearly love.

“Alien: Covenant” dethroned “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” atop the box office this weekend and is currently sitting at 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is to say that a great many seem to have enjoyed Ridley Scott’s latest. Not among them is “Hannibal” and “American Gods” creator Bryan Fuller, who responded bluntly when asked whether he liked the film: “No.”

“I think the last two movies have had too many similarities to bad ‘Friday the 13th’ sequels and not enough similarities to good ‘Alien’ movies,” Fuller elaborated during Vulture Festival yesterday. Though he concedes that both “Prometheus” and “Covenant” are “masterfully executed on a technical level, gorgeously composed and produced,” Fuller finds himself frustrated by “really smart characters doing really stupid things.”

It's a tight race at the top as weekend estimates have Alien: Covenant holding a narrow lead over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for the #1 spot at the weekend box office. Considering Guardians has been underestimated the past two weekends by $1.46 million and $2.25 million, tomorrow afternoon's actuals will be something to look out for as less than $1 million separates the two films. Meanwhile, WB and MGM's Everything, Everything delivered on the high end of industry expectations while Fox's Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul will be looking to next weekend, hoping the upcoming four-day holiday will improve what was a rather weak debut. At #1, Fox's Alien: Covenant debuted with an estimated $36 million, nearly 43% of which came from its Friday performance, which included $4.2 million from Thursday previews. An opening less than $40 million is somewhat disappointing considering the $51 million opening for its predecessor, Prometheus, five years ago. Yet, the...

If all goes as planned, director Ridley Scott's sci-fi thriller Alien: Covenant will rule the box office this weekend with a North American debut of $40 million or more.
That would be enough to topple Disney and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which has stayed atop the chart for the past two weekends.
Scott's second installment in the Alien prequel franchise, costing Fox $97 million to produce, features an ensemble cast led by Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston and Billy Crudup. In June 2012, Scott's Prometheus debuted to $51 million domestically.

It ended up a lighter weekend than expected, mostly due to the struggles of the weekend's two new wide releases as both King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Snatched fell below Mojo's forecast. In the case of King Arthur it opened well below our estimation as the $175 million budgeted feature couldn't even crack $15 million over the three-day. Meanwhile, at #1 it was Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which is already flirting with $250 million domestically after ten days in release and has now topped $630 million worldwide. For the second weekend in a row it's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at the top of the weekend box office as it delivered an estimated $63 million for a domestic cume over $246 million. While this falls below our $69.9 million forecast, the 57% drop is an improvement on the average for first sequels in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and better than the second weekend holds for Avengers: Age of Ultron,...

Walt Disney is a genius. Whether you like his movies or not is irrelevant. The work he did legitimizing animation as an art form has brought about many years of great movies and shorts from the likes of Disney, Warner Brothers, Hanna Barbera, and many others. He formed his own movie studio which has turned into a juggernaut, responsible for movies like Pulp Fiction from their Miramax Films brand, Toy Story from Pixar, Beauty and the Beast, and many others. He realized the importance of branding by opening his own theme parks, Disney Land and Disney World. So it begs to question why the last words Walt Disney ever wrote were "Kurt Russell".

It's hard to believe that we're already nearly halfway through 2017.
At the beginning of the year we were super pumped for all the great movies that were coming out. Titles like Beauty and the Beast, The Fate of the Furious, and Get Out have all broken records and far surpassed our expectations. We'd be safe to say that 2017 has already been a great year for movies.
