Chicago – The career of comedian Bobcat Goldthwait is a wild roller coaster of hilarity and passion, so it stands to reason that his latest film is called “Joy Ride.” The film, one of the funniest stand up docs you’ll ever see, also features Bobcat’s comedy partner Dana Gould on a stand up tour right before the pandemic. It’s available through VOD and iTunes, click Joy Ride for details.
“Joy Ride” is essentially a stand-up comedy tour documentary, because it is rooted in the career overviews of Bobcat and Dana. Both men have had trials and tribulations in show business, based on backgrounds that included difficulties in their youth. These situations become their comedy in the film, with Gould especially opening up on a complete meltdown in the 1990s. The Bobcat past highlights are especially telling, and has precipitated a long running feud between the comic and his fellow traveler Jerry Seinfeld.

Comedians Bobcat Goldthwait and Dana Gould suffered minor injuries after a car crash that forced them to cancel a show in Atlanta Thursday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Dale Watson channels his newly adopted part-time home of Memphis, Tennessee, on “The Dumb Song,” an unapologetic rockabilly throwback that will appear on his next LP, Call Me Lucky.
With a walking bass line pulled straight from Johnny Cash’s Fifties repertoire, “The Dumb Song” — like all but one of the tracks on the new album, which is due out on February 15th — was recorded at Sam Phillips Recording, the onetime home of Cash’s first label Sun Records. It was even cut with Cash’s drummer, W.S. Holland, for an extra bit of authenticity.

As scary as a cabin in the woods can be, one of the most disturbing backdrops for a film can be the college culture, where horrors that are all too real sometimes take place. Such is the case in Natalie Leite’s M.F.A., which made its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival (read Heather's review here) and has now been acquired for Us distribution by Dark Sky Films.

Here comes the Kevin James digital boom. Friday’s release of James’ latest film, Netflix’s “True Memoirs of an International Assassin,” marks a significant milestone in the 51-year-old actor’s career. After starring in more than half a dozen studio movies for Columbia Pictures — including two “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” films that together grossed nearly $300 million worldwide — James’ signature brand of family-friendly comedy has landed at Netflix, where 86 million subscribers will be able to watch “True Memoirs” from the comfort of their own homes.

Subverting the Unexpected
At the end of the 20th century, Bobcat Goldthwait’s legacy read like a cheap joke: He was a screaming comedian from the eighties best known as Zed in the “Police Academy” franchise who once tried at his hand at directing a movie (“Shakes the Clown”). Those achievements barely skimmed the surface of Goldthwait’s ability, as the ensuing years made clear, when Goldthwait completely transformed his career into one of the most provocative American filmmakers working today. With the microbudget “Sleeping Dogs Lie” (aka “Stay”), Goldthwait showed his potential to funnel taboo subject matters into oddly touching, relatable human dramas, a proclivity he kicked up to a whole new level with the subversive black comedy “World’s Greatest Dad,” which features Robin Williams in one of his all-time great roles.

The tragic downfall of artists, behind the scenes of a genocide and the war on drugs, celebrations of music and locales, a look into the political divide from multiple angles, the history of a legendary conversation on filmmaking — these were just a few of the places and stories this year’s documentary offerings brought us. With 2015 wrapping up, we’ve selected 25 features in the field that most impressed us, so check out our list below and let us know your favorites in the comments.
Amy (Asif Kapadia)
Asif Kapadia entered cinematic radars with his BAFTA-winning Senna, a terrific documentary on the life and tragic death of Formula 1 race car driver Ayrton Senna. The subject matter of his follow-up documentary doesn’t seem, at first, to be a million miles away. Amy, which screened out of competition in Cannes, follows the meteoric rise and tragic fall of the late singer Amy Winehouse.

Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
American Ultra (Nima Nourizadeh)
From its first few shots, it’s clear that American Ultra is removed from the relatively grounded drama of Greg Mottola’s underrated Adventureland, the last film that paired Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart. We first meet Eisenberg’s bloodied and beaten Mike Howell detained and chained to a table in a septic interrogation room. As an agent throws photographic evidence of...

The partners have hired Ted Geoghegan to direct the follow-up to his acclaimed SXSW 2015 selection We Are Still Here. Mpi has begun talks with international buyers at the Afm.
Satanic Panic charts a delivery girl’s night of terror as she encounters a satanic cult among the leaders of an affluent neighbourhood.
Casting will begin shortly on the project that reunites Geoghegan (pictured in woollen hat) with producer Travis Stevens and Greg Newman. Grady Hendrix writes the screenplay.
“Equal parts supernatural horror and survival thriller, the film hinges on smart, funny dialogue and a clever, surprisingly badass female hero,” said Geoghegan.
“A snarky, splattery takedown of the one percent, it places a trod-upon heroine up against the literally soulless societal upper crust. The banter and blood come fast and furious, and we’re hoping to leave very little time to breathe between gasps and gags.”
“We Are Still Here was incredibly well received by both critics and audiences...

As 2015 winds down, like most cinephiles, we’re looking to get our hands on the titles that may have slipped under the radar or simply gone unseen. With the proliferation of streaming options, it’s thankfully easier than ever to play catch-up, and to assist with the process, we’re bringing you a rundown of the best titles of the year available to watch.
Curated from the Best Films of 2015 So Far list we published for the first half of the year, it also includes films we’ve enjoyed the past few months and some we’ve recently caught up on. This is far from a be-all, end-all year-end feature (that will come at the end of the year), but rather something that will hopefully be a helpful tool for readers to have a chance to seek out notable, perhaps underseen, titles from the year.
Note that we’re going by U.

As is always the case around this time of year, the Academy has given us a hint as to what’s eligible for nominations in certain categories. Today, I have the recently released list of eligible contenders in Best Documentary Feature to share with you all. There’s 124 docs in total hoping to score one of the five slots open at the Academy Awards. Historically, Oscar is fairly picky with their subject matter, but they do throw up some curveballs from time to time. This year, they’ll have as unique a choice to make as any, especially considering how there’s no true frontrunner right now. Of the numerous titles in contention, there’s a large group that bears specifically keeping an eye on. Just a small sample includes 1971, Above and Beyond, Amy, The Armor of Light, Batkid Begins, Best of Enemies, Cartel Land, The Diplomat, Every Last Child,...

We can't wait for Netflix's November 20th debut of "Marvel's Jessica Jones" starring Krysten Ritter as a superhero who becomes a private detective. The noirish series, which received a great reception at New York Comic Con, costars Carrie-Anne Moss and former Dr. Who David Tennant.
Other Netflix originals premiering in November: "River," starring Stellan Skarsgård as a detective haunted by visions of his murdered colleague; the Aziz Ansari comedy series "Master of None;" and "W/Bob and David," which re-teams Bob Odenkirk and David Cross.
As for movies, you might have missed Keira Knightley in "Anna Karenina" (2012), which first paired "Ex Machina's" Alicia Vikander and Domhnall Gleeson. Also new, Nicolas Cage's "The Runner" and documentaries "Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad and Me," "Call Me Lucky" and "Do I Sound Gay?"
Here's the entire list of what's new on Netflix in November.

Every week we dive into the cream of the crop when it comes to home releases, including Blu-ray and DVDs, as well as recommended deals of the week. Check out our rundown below and return every Tuesday for the best (or most interesting) films one can take home. Note that if you’re looking to support the site, every purchase you make through the links below helps us and is greatly appreciated.
Aladdin (Ron Clements and John Musker)
The first film I recall seeing in a theater, Aladdin was certainly a formative moviegoing experience, and having recently revisited it over the summer, it still wonderfully holds up. Now coming to Blu-ray, Disney’s remastered edition includes a wealth of extra, topped by a nine-minute reel of Robin Williams outtakes, coming to life with storyboards. Also including a pair of audio commentaries, a featurette on the Broadway adaptation, and more, it’s an essential pick-up.

"I wouldn't have made the movie if it wasn't for Robin's encouragement."-- Director Bobcat Goldthwait on Call Me Lucky. The first time I interviewed actor-turned-director Bobcat Goldthwait, it was for the weird and wonderful World's Greatest Dad, starring the late, irreplaceable Robin Williams. (You can read that interview here). The film was an unexpected wallop, and is even more important to me now. Goldthwait continues to switch up his filmmaking, taking on different genres and styles. Last year he made a great horror film called Willow Creek. It's a found footage film, but unlike most found footage films made today, he brought originality and terror to the exhausted sub-genre. There's a 20-minute single take scene that's guaranteed to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand straight...

Without any exaggeration, I would call Bobcat Goldthwait one of the most consistently interesting and original filmmakers working today. When he first started turning out films like "Sleeping Dogs Lie" and "World's Greatest Dad," there was a quick moment where it seemed surprising to me that the guy from the "Police Academy" films could make those movies. That passed, though, and now the surprising part is that someone as thoughtful and articulate and big-hearted could have ever vanished into the character from those movies. I can't connect the guy I've been speaking with on and off for the last five or six years to the guy I saw perform live several times in the '80s, and I find him fascinating as a result. I wasn't nervous about having Bobcat in to the HitFix studios on Tuesday, but I was very nervous about meeting Barry Crimmins, the subject of "Call Me Lucky,...

“Call Me Lucky,” a Bobcat Goldthwait film focusing on Goldthwait’s friend and mentor Barry Crimmins, is a fantastic documentary exploring the life of a comedian-activist who has influenced so many big names in comedy as well as helped save an uncountable number of children from the perils of childhood pornography in online chat rooms. ShockYa was happy to speak to Goldthwait and Crimmins about the film, Crimmins’ impact on childhood online safety and what they hope people take away from the film. “Call Me Lucky” is now available in theaters. What was the inspiration for “Call Me Lucky”? Or, rather, what inspired you to make this documentary about Barry? Bobcat [ Read More ]

Bobcat Goldthwait got his odd nickname from his comedy club mentor, Barry “Bearcat” Crimmins, the patriarch of Boston’s standup comedy boom of the 1990s and early employer of Paula Poundstone, Denis Leary, and Stephen Wright. Unable to realize his dream of director pal Robin Williams in a Crimmins biopic, Goldthwait instead created “Call Me Lucky,” a documentary about Crimmins, whose act was a political rant akin to Lewis Black’s. Goldthwait has certainly come a long way since he trashed Crimmins’ place while high on booze, LSD and cocaine as a young comedian. (There’s a brief scene of the young,...

I recently had the opportunity to speak to writer/director/producer Bobcat Goldthwait about his new documentary Call Me Lucky, which chronicles the story of Barry Crimmins, political satirist and former stand-up comic and comedy club owner.
Himself a survivor of childhood abuse, Crimmins notoriously testified before the U.S. Senate in the 1990’s to expose internet service provider AOL for allowing images of child sexual abuse to be displayed and traded in its public chat rooms, before becoming somewhat of a recluse in the past few decades.

“Barry Crimmins is pissed.” That one, simple line does sum up the film rather well, but it doesn’t truly do justice to the new documentary from Bobcat Goldthwait. Call Me Lucky is the story behind the story of Barry Crimmins, a comedian’s comedian that heavily influenced the Boston comedy scene in the 80s and beyond, but may not be widely known today by the general public. This film is your chance to change that unfortunate hole in your intellectual experience.
Thinking back to the glory days of 1980s comedy, we’ll recall Bobcat Goldthwait as the wild, manic and seemingly uncontrollable comedian who spoke strangely, had crazy hair and appeared in the Police Academy movies huffing aerosol. I admit that when I first saw Bobcat Goldthwait on screen sometime in the 1980s, he of the Grover voice making me laugh in the second Police Academy movie, it never occurred to me that he'd be helming one of the most powerful and moving documentaries of the year. In the best, most charitable way, Call Me Lucky is a passion project for Goldthwait. The director traces the career of the film's subject, his mentor Barry Crimmins, as we learn of the rise of the Boston comedy scene and the wealth of talent that emerged from there. Crimmins was an astute chronicler of the time, a political comedian who raged with the best of them but did so with a specificity and eloquence that's rare....

"It would've been easier to get actual Bigfoot footage," Bobcat Goldthwait says, on having to unearth clips of razor-tongued comedian-activist Barry Crimmins, the subject of his emotionally rich documentary Call Me Lucky. Though the Boston-based stand-up was an influence on no shortage of East Coast alt-comics in the Eighties and Nineties, Crimmins was the guy who bellowed biting jokes about the Hud scandal on Comic Strip Live, thus making his television footprint was relatively small. "It would've been easier to do a Gallagher doc," the director admits.

Not only has he directed seven films over the past decade, but he had a blast directing "Community." Goldthwait's last fiction film "Willow Creek" was a found footage Bigfoot movie with the filmmaker "interviewing actual folks in a town and putting them in a suspense scary buffet movie." So it was natural that he should go full documentary for "Call Me Lucky," which started with Goldthwait's best friend of 33 years, Robin Williams (he still gets teary when his name comes up), who was trying to make a scripted narrative movie about Crimmins. The official synopsis reads: "An inspiring, triumphant and wickedly funny portrait of one of comedy's most enigmatic and important figures, 'Call Me Lucky' tells the story of Barry Crimmins, a beer-swilling, politically outspoken and whip-smart comic whose efforts in the '70's and '80's fostered the talents of the next generation of standup comedians. Even if you call yourself a fan of stand-up comedy, there’s a good chance that you may never have heard of Barry Crimmins. "They weren't quite sure what to make of Barry." One of the better documentaries out of Sundance this year is one titled Call Me Lucky, from filmmaker and comedian Bobcat Goldthwait. At my screening at Sundance, Bobcat introduced it by talking about his friendship with Robin Williams, revealing that Robin told him to go out and make this documentary about Barry. So he did. And it's a remarkable documentary that will throw your for a loop, as there's a dark secret revealed halfway through that changes everything. By the end I was inspired, because Barry has gone through so much yet remains such a strong and genuine voice, in comedy and activism. This one of those documentaries where I'll continue to say - it's worth seeing. Here's the trailer for Bobcat Goldthwait's documentary Call Me Lucky, originally from Yahoo: Barry Crimmins is pissed. Call Me Lucky
Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait
USA, 2015
Call Me Lucky introduces the film’s central figure, Barry Crimmins, to the audience as a government-hating, Catholic church despising curmudgeon. When the documentary heads to upstate New York to chronicle a scruffily bearded, firewood chopping Crimmins, now living in isolation, it makes total sense. Call Me Lucky starts off hitting all the beats of a familiar type of biopic story: Crimmins arrived on the comedy scene with a style ahead of its time, left behind a legacy that never got its due, and his greatest contribution to the business was opening doors for a younger generation of comics. Midway through the film, there is a drastic shift in the tone of Call Me Lucky that completely obliterates any notion of where the film is headed. The result is a shocking and enjoyable documentary, filled with laughs, tears, and inspiring acts of courage.
