Kicking off a new column here, in which we will look at the most interesting, or conversation-worthy poster of the week, every Friday morning. Sometimes we will talk about design, other times about influences on other iconic films, or historical key-art cues and tropes, and sometimes we will just throw up a very pretty poster that we happen to like. Because this week is everything Star Wars, let us have a look at the most interesting of the 50 odd posters designed to market Episode VIII. Some of you may have already seen The Last Jedi at the point of publication of this post. I have not, so I am just going to highlight why I think it is a catchy design. With Marvel-Disney going...

Here’s a spoof song that likely won’t make it onto President Trump’s holiday playlist.
The gifts mentioned in the classic 1909 holiday tune “The Twelve Days of Christmas” are a little dated (10 lords a-leaping? That is so last century) so Stephen Colbert took the liberty of sprucing up the song to make it more relevant to 2017.
In the Late Show‘s reimagining, the 12-day celebration focuses on special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip‘s on-screen counterparts dazzled as they walked the red carpet on Tuesday evening at the premiere for season two of The Crown.
Claire Foy and Matt Smith, who play the monarch and her husband on the hit Netflix show, were the leading guests as the show received its world premiere in London. Vanessa Kirby, who plays the Queen’s sultry sister Princess Margaret, also walked the red carpet.

Taylor Swift‘s surprise performance led to a touching unexpected coincidence for a grieving Jimmy Fallon.
On Monday, Swift made an unannounced appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, during the comedian’s first show on air since the death of his mother Gloria.
The singer, 27, performed her new song “New Year’s Day” while playing the piano following the late night host’s monologue. Serendipitously, the lyrics unintentionally referred back to a touching story Fallon told about his mother squeezing his hand three times to say “I love you” when he was a child.

Since 2011, the Hallmark Channel has been running a programming event called Countdown to Christmas. Kicking off a TV series with a teenage girl’s face full of blood is a pretty strong indication that it probably won’t get much cheerier from there. “Tin Star,” written and created by Rowan Joffe, doesn’t just use its in medias res opening as a statement of tone and danger, it uses it as a benchmark. By the time the Amazon series is halfway through its freshman season, physical and mental suffering becomes the exhausting, all-encompassing norm. A modern western, told through mild corporate intrigue and heavy doses of vice and violence, it’s an exercise in endurance with few character rewards at the finish line.

Once upon a time, there was a goofy little show called Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It’s first TV outing, a mid-season replacement that only contained 12 episodes, premiered to mixed responses. Whilst the potential was clearly there, it was easy to write it off as just a little too silly, a little too… odd. Nevertheless, it was granted a Season Two, which premiered on September 15th, 1997.
And this is where shit got serious.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 2 is truly a remarkable season of television. This is the year when the writers realised that not only were they making something special here, but that they were capable of producing some incredible content. Whilst the first half does maintain some of the less than impressive traits of Season One, such as poor quality filler episodes (containing mummies) and some rather rubbish bad guys (the zombie from episode 2 and literally everything to...

Kicking off yet another Star Trek series is a tricky undertaking in today’s market under the best of circumstances, and Star Trek: Discovery seems to be a venture hoping to handicap its possibilities as much as possible. CBS All Access availability is the most obvious limitation, but it also takes us to a prequel timeline, and kicks off with a space opera clash with the Klingons that leads to war. Worst of all, perhaps, by the time you get into the series a few episodes, the first two might as well have been a fifteen-minute flashback that builds the setting.
Our main focal point is Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), who was raised by Vulcans after her parents were killed by Klingons (which doesn’t seem to make sense in the timeline we have). It’s an event-movie detonation, a phantasmagorical horror, a black-comic nightmare. The year’s other big “Wonder Woman” movie includes plenty that would never make the cut in not just a studio-issued superhero blockbuster, but the vast majority of paint-by-number biopics, including: two long-form sequences involving a threesome, a secret venture to a clandestine sex toy-selling lingerie shop, a lie detector machine used as a form of foreplay, ropes, ropes, and more ropes, and a unshakable belief in the true power and reach of feminism. Angela Robinson’s fact-based film follows the eyebrow-raising personal life of Dr. William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans) and the two great loves of his life, his wife Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall) and their shared partner Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote), and how its unconventional bent led to the creation of Wonder Woman.
For as subversive as her subject matter is, Robinson couches her film in familiar trappings — the film uses a wraparound narrative device that connects past and present,...

The year is 1962. Aggrieved when Algeria is granted independence by President Charles de Gaulle, the militant underground alliance known as the Organisation Armée Secrète botches an attempt to assassinate him. Within months many of the conspirators, including their top man, have been captured and executed. The remaining Oas leaders, bereft of funds, take refuge in Austria and warily decide to contract an outside professional to do the job for them. They settle on a British assassin (Edward Fox), who chooses to be identified as Jackal. The Oas orchestrate several bank robberies to cover his exorbitant fee of half a million dollars whilst the mechanics of the plotting are left entirely to Jackal's discretion. After capturing and interrogating another alliance member, the French authorities learn of Jackal's existence and, suspecting another attempt on de Gaulle's life may be imminent, they set their best man – Deputy Commissioner Claude Lebel (Michel Lonsdale) – on his tail.

Major spoilers for Game of Thrones, Season 7, episode 5, “Eastwatch.” Well that was a tense-as-hell 66 minutes of “Game of Thrones.” Kicking off with the unfortunate (and surprising) execution of the remaining non-Night’s Watch Tarlys, we saw Daenerys flirting with both despotism and (seriously) Jon Snow, the possibility of a temporary peace between the remaining warring factions of the seven kingdoms, the return of (Spoiler) Gendry, and so much more. Of biggest concern is Jon Snow assembling the Magnificent Seven of Westeros to fight, and capture, a white walker. The Hound, Jon, Jorah, and Tormund have all linked up to go.

Luminosity vs Rise Nation
Kicking off the final day of Cwl Championships would see the semi-final match of the losers bracket, Luminosity vs Rise Nation, going to blows. All week long we talked about the redemption story of Rise and they're fall from grace, early in the tournament, but Luminosity were undergoing that same process. The added layer to this match was that Octane, Slacked, and Classic of LG were previously on Rise. They left Loony by himself for LG. So, for Loony this was as much revenge as it was redemption.
Opening up Game 1, it looked as if Loony was just as motivated as we all assumed he'd be. Rise came out...

Ahead of next month's Horror Channel FrightFest in London, here's the official artwork....
Kicking off on Thursday 24th August and running through until Monday 28th August is this year’s Horror Channel FrightFest, the biggest celebration of genre cinema in the UK.
The event is spread across the Prince Charles Cinema and Cineworld Leicester Square in London, and the official artwork for the festival has now been released.
It’s been produced by Graham Humphreys, who said of it that “my image is an attempt to amalgamate the Gothic roots of horror with the 70s Monster revival that saturated the Us and UK, inspiring generations of filmmakers that created some of the most successful film franchises and oddities of the last 40 years. Universal monsters meets 70s bubble gum pop. I also thought it would be fun to play with the idea of a FrightFest Phantom, the...
