The skiing trip just got a little busier. Deadline reports that Will Ferrell is joining Julia Louis-Dreyfus in “Downhill,” the English-language remake of Ruben Östlund’s acclaimed “Force Majeure.” Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, who helmed “The Way Way Back” and won an Oscar for co-writing Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants,” are directing for Fox Searchlight.
Johannes Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, and Kristofer Hivju co-starred in the original, which won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize and earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign-Language Film; Östlund’s follow-up, “The Square,” won the Palme d’Or last year.
“Obviously, Searchlight is like family at this point. We’re honored to be working with them for a third time. But, to also have our paths cross with Julia, and a fellow Groundling alum in Will, makes this all the more special and exciting for us,” Faxon and Rash said in a statement Deadline.

Before you say it, we know — Hollywood is yet again making another (perhaps) pointless English-language remake of a great foreign film. That being said, there’s something interesting about the cast and crew that’s being put together for the upcoming remake of 2014’s “Force Majeure,” titled “Downhill.”
According to Deadline, Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus are attached to star in the upcoming Fox Searchlight film “Downhill,” the English-language remake of the incredible Swedish dramedy, “Force Majeure.” For those that haven’t seen the 2014 film, “Force Majeure” (and ostensibly “Downhill”) tells the story of a family that is thrown into chaos while on a ski trip when an avalanche narrowly misses them.

While Ruben Östlund reached newfound acclaim thanks to a Palme d’Or win for The Square, it was his prior film, Force Majeure, in which he landed on our radars. A rigorously assured exploration of the responsibility found in marriage, it’s deeply funny and smartly observed, with performances that rely on acute gestures and movements to convey things some films take an entire runtime to explore. It was inevitable an American remake would be in the works and after an initial announcement back in 2015, things are finally moving forward.

Stay in the loop on industry and casting news with our write-up on who’s been slated for recent film and television roles! “Downhill”Julia Louis-Dreyfus is setting up shop on her next project, “Downhill.” With the final season of HBO’s “Veep” nearly complete, the actor is turning her attention to the big screen. Louis-Dreyfus is set to star in and produce the film, which is a remake of a 2014 Swedish film called “Force Majeure.” Despite its lack of mainstream popularity in the United States, the dramedy took home festival awards in several categories. This new version of “Downhill” seems to closely follow the story of its Swedish counterpart, featuring a family on holiday at a ski resort that’s directly in the path of an oncoming avalanche. When the avalanche fails to cause any damage, the family finds the father’s reaction to the event to be a source of concern.

I had the distinct pleasure of corresponding with Natalie Burn. Burn’s talented beyond measure and has had a well lived life thus far. Beginning as a dancer and studying at such prestigious schools as The Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow and The Royal Ballet School in London.
She then threw her hand into the acting game, and has worked alongside Sly Stallone himself in Expendables 3, and has recently made a film that deals with the dark side of organ donation, in addition to Awaken and Killer Mermaid (review). It’s pretty impressive not only because it has some noteworthy names in it, but it was also co-written by her as well. She even does her own stunt work. If it’s not apparent by now, she believes in a pretty broad skill set.
