A trio of new titles gained traction in their initial week on VOD, but it’s the staying power of Daniels’ surprise multiverse hit, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24/19.99), that stands out from the pack.
The Michelle Yeoh-starring film took in a totally unexpected 63 million box office and had one of the longer recent windows, particularly for a non-major distributor. Its next stop: VOD, where it arrived after its eleventh weekend in theaters. The film did arrive later than most new releases, including competitor “Downton Abbey: A New Era”, but this strong response signals that its heft isn’t just contained to the box office.
The “Everything Everywhere” result is particularly revealing. A24 often makes its wide releases available for home viewing in under a month. The decision to delay as long as they did turns out to have been a ten-strike. And while they had no reason...

Back when we did our Class of 1986 series years ago, one of the films that I decided to champion was The Wraith from writer/director Mike Marvin, which I hadn’t really seen discussed a whole lot amongst genre fans. Hopefully, that will now change with the brand new Vestron Blu-ray that came out last week, because if there’s any justice in this world, this horror/action hybrid will finally end up on more folks’ radars with this new release. It may not be the most original genre movie to come out of the ‘80s, but considering its stellar cast, incredible soundtrack, and a handful of mind-blowingly great driving sequences, The Wraith is very much a movie that should earn a rediscovery phase now.
The Wraith tells the story of a teenager named Jamie who is murdered by a street-racing gang, led by the maniacal Packard (Nick Cassavetes). Soon after,...

O-t Fagbenle has been cast in the recurring role of President Barack Obama in the upcoming Showtime anthology series “The First Lady.”
He will star opposite Viola Davis, who will play First Lady Michelle Obama. The show is described as a reframing of American leadership, told through the lens of the women at the heart of the White House. The first season will also star Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford, Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt, and Aaron Eckhart as President Gerald Ford.
Obama served as the first African American and 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, Barack married Michelle Robinson in 1992 before he became an Illinois state senator in 2005.
Fagenle most recently starred as Luke Bankole in the critically acclaimed Hulu series “The Handmaid’s Tale.” He will next be seen in the Marvel film “Black Widow” opposite Scarlett Johansson. He has a long history in television,...

“Avenging Force” is an underrated, overlooked, action extravaganza starring Michael Dudikoff and Steve James, which was produced between the first two “American Ninja” films. Released by the legendary, mini-studio, “The Cannon Group,” many die hard action fans consider this to be Michael Dudikoff’s onscreen tour de force. Sam Firstenberg agrees, and even believes this is his own best movie out of the 25 films he’s directed.
On the surface “Avenging Force” is a typical slam-bang, exploitation action flick, but the social/political themes of white supremacy and systemic racism are sadly much more relevant today than they were in 1986. The villains of the film, “The Pentangle,” are an extremist militant group of powerful elites that will destroy anyone that opposes their vision of what America should be.
“Avenging Force” was originally conceived as a sequel to the Chuck Norris film, “Invasion USA,” and it is a very unique movie...

The final action-packed trailer for Black Widow released this morning, prompting actor O-t Fagbenle to tease that he’s likely to be taking on the role of the film’s villain Taskmaster, a deadly Marvel antagonist known for being able to mimic his opponents’ movements precisely.
In a Tweet and Instagram post (the latter of which has since been deleted), he stated:
The Black Widow stand alone movie is coming! The new poster is out, the new trailer is here, it’s going to be a banger of a movie #blackwidow #comingsoon #Mason #Tm black.widow
The use of “#Tm” seemingly indicates that Fagbenle is set to play Taskmaster, debunking previous rumors that actress Rachael Weisz might secretly be the popular Marvel villain. Apparently, she’ll instead be exclusively playing Melina Vostokoff, a mercenary character from the comics who’s known for her intense hatred of Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson...

In 1981 director Wolfgang Petersen made a great film adaptation of author Lothar-Günther Buchheim‘s World War II submarine thriller novel Das Boot. I loved that film and now Hulu is taking a crack at the source material by adapting it into a series.
Here’s the official description of the series that was shared:
A story of choices and survival, Das Boot explores the emotional torment of life during World War Two, and the brutal reality of living within a senseless war.
During the Autumn of 1942, in occupied France, U-612 is now ready for its maiden voyage, preparing to head into the increasingly brutal warfare with its young crewmen, including the new captain, Klaus Hoffmann. As the 40 young men take on their first mission, they struggle with the cramped and claustrophobic conditions of life underwater. Their personalities are pushed to the limit as tensions rise and loyalties begin to shatter.

Exclusive: O-t Fagbenle has joined Marvel’s Black Widow in a leading role opposite Scarlett Johansson. Fagbenle joins previously announced castmembers David Harbour, Florence Pugh, and Rachel Weisz. Production will reportedly start this June in London.
Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland (Lore) is directing the project from Ned Benson’s rewrite of Jac Schaeffer’s previous script. Kevin Feige will produce the project. Plot details are under wraps, though pic will center on the origin story of Johansson’s Kgb spy assassin Natasha Romanoff who was first introduced in Iron Man 2 and ultimately became an agent of Shield and an Avenger. To date Marvel hasn’t announced what their films are for next year, i.e. during the first weekend of May and the first weekend of November. A good guess is that Black Widow will take one of those slots.

Tonight (June 9), BBC One launched The Interceptor - its new action thriller following the maverick Ash (Ot Fagbenle) as he and his team work to bring down a complex criminal network.
Fagbenle has compared the show to vintage TV classics like Starsky & Hutch and Kojak - comments echoed by writer Tony Saint, who also named The Professionals as an inspiration.
"It's got action in it, it's got an element of humour in it - and it's got a double-act at the heart, so there's a buddy element to it, which harks back to classics like The Professionals and Starsky and Hutch," said Saint.
"Kojak is another one - I think the balance between action and peril and fun, that's one of the big things [we tried to emulate]."
But was The Interceptor a modern classic, or a failed attempt to recapture past glories? Digital Spy wants your thoughts on the series.

BBC One's new thriller The Interceptor is intended as family fare - but without sacrificing any "grittiness", says star Ot Fagbenle.
Fagbenle - who plays lead Ash on the series - echoed creator Tony Saint's comments about the show evoking older series such as The Professionals and Starsky & Hutch.
"I think one of the most exciting things about the show is that it has this grittiness and heart-pumping action, but at the same time, the whole family can sit down and watch it," he told Digital Spy.
"Some crime shows get so gruesome and dark - you can't watch it with your 13-year-old without thinking 'Am I exposing them to something which could corrupt them and destroy them for life?' - this show manages to keep its grittiness and its fast-pace, but at the same time, it has that family drama feel, like those [older] shows - like Starsky & Hutch and Kojak did.

The Interceptor is BBC One's attempt to emulate classic shows like The Professionals, says creator Tony Saint.
Saint revealed at a recent press screening that his new crime thriller was inspired by the '70s shows he'd enjoyed as a boy.
"It's got action in it, it's got an element of humour in it - and it's got a double-act at the heart, so there's a buddy element to it, which harks back to classics like The Professionals and Starsky and Hutch," he said.
"Kojak is another one - I think the balance between action and peril and fun, that's one of the big things [we tried to emulate]."
Saint added that The Interceptor is designed to have a "broad appeal" and target a wide range of ages.
"It'd be great to bring a younger audience to the show," he said. "By design, it's not excessively violent, the bad language is kept to...

One day’s shoot on flagship BBC nature doc Planet Earth can generate 28 tonnes of carbon.
The film and TV industries are “not doing enough” to combat climate change, according to a panel of industry experts.
Speaking at the third annual ‘Greening the Screen’ event organised by BAFTA and the BFI on Wednesday, Howard Ella, producer on BBC crime drama The Interceptor, said:
“Across the industry, we are absolutely not doing enough. Producers have so much power and the impetus for change has to come from the very top.”
On average, the production of one hour of television generates 9.4 tonnes of carbon.
The industry is “generally the worst culprit when it comes to carbon emissions” according to BBC cinematographer Paul Williams, who revealed that one day’s shoot on flagship BBC nature doc Planet Earth generated 28 tonnes of carbon.
He added: “One tonne of carbon takes up the volume of around one London bus, that’s the weight...

Who is Sacha Dhawan?
Ever since his star-making role as Doctor Who's first director Waris Hussein in Mark Gatiss' brilliant drama An Adventure in Space and Time, this up-and-comer has seemingly not left our television screens.
From parts in cult series In The Flesh and Utopia to a guest stint on flashy Us drama 24, not to mention his latest gig on BBC One's In The Club, Dhawan has had quite the year.
Digital Spy spoke to Sacha about his career thus far and the range of different characters he's brought to life in some of UK television's best dramatic series.
"I was a child actor - when I was about 12, I was doing children's TV on Citv - but I was still in school," Dhawan recalls of his beginnings as an actor.
"When I left college, I decided to focus on acting full-time. I went to London,...

Of the shows that Marvel and Netflix are collaborating on, there’s none that I’m more excited for than Daredevil. Despite Drew Goddard being replaced as showrunner, this project still has plenty going for it. Daredevil is a very interesting character, and they’ve found an excellent cast to bring his story to the small screen. While we’re still very much in the dark as to which direction the series is heading in, I’m definitely looking forward to this one.
Today, we have more promising news coming our way, as Farren Blackburn has confirmed that he’ll helm an episode of the show. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Blackburn’s work, he’s best known for directing a couple episodes of Doctor Who (The Rings of Akhaten” and “The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe”) and the final two episodes of season three of Luther.
