‘Harold & Kumar’ and ‘Grudge’ star John Cho thinks movies that don’t focus on his Asian heritage feel more “authentic.” The ‘Searching’ actor was born in Seoul, South Korea, but in recent years, his on-screen roles have had relatively little to do with his Asian background, reports aceshowbiz.com. The Independence Day star landed his first major role in his 30s, but has since made up for lost time. Now he’s heading to the stage in a furious satire. He talks about family, fame and how Ibsen put him in a coma
Bill Pullman was 32 years old when he starred in his first film, 1986’s Ruthless People. This is, he notes, at least a decade later than most movie stars get their big break. “The term ‘late bloomer’ sounds awfully like loser, but I guess it’s what I am,” he says. “It sounds to me like a politically correct term for: ‘You’re stupid. Why did you take so long?’”
The reason he took so long is theatre. Prior to Pullman’s Hollywood career, during which he has hopscotched from film noir (Lost Highway) and kids’ films (Casper) to horror, romcoms and a triumphant blockbuster (Independence Day...

With a resume that reads like a horror geek’s ultimate movie marathon, Ted Raimi has been making unforgettable contributions to the genre for decades. From his brother Sam Raimi’s beloved Evil Dead films to classics like Candyman and The Grudge, he’s just about seen and done it all when it comes to horror. But when he signed on to join the cast of The Quarry, Supermassive Games’ latest entry in their signature line of choose-your-doom horror games, he stepped into a project that felt entirely new.
“It’s like nothing I’ve ever done before,” Raimi tells Den of Geek. “On other games I’ve done before, developers will create characters based on images of you, and then you come in later and just voice the thing. But for The Quarry, my castmates and I were on set, interacting with each other in real-time. All of the...

Given that The Quarry is the latest horror game from the brilliant minds behind the modern genre classic Until Dawn, it should come as no surprise that the game’s cast is filled with horror character tropes voiced (and often motion-captured) by a lot of familiar names.
Indeed, part of the fun of playing a game like The Quarry comes from trying to figure out where you know so many of its cast members from. While a few names will jump out at you instantly, others most certainly fall into that “Oh yeah, I know them” category.
So if you’re tired of scratching your head over who is who in The Quarry, here’s a breakdown of the game’s cast of primary characters and where you might know their actors from.
Abigail Blyg – Voiced by Ariel Winter
Abigail is a shy and occasionally awkward camp counselor who seemingly aspires to be an artist.

In the not-so-grand tradition of "The Vanishing," "The Grudge," and "Delivery Man," German filmmaker Stephan Rick has opted to step behind the camera for the English-language remake of his foreign-language original film. Fortunately for Rick, his 2011 thriller, "Unter Nachbarn," never received a U.S. release; ergo, the twists and turns of this fiendish-looking yarn, now titled "The Good Neighbor," will be completely new to the vast majority of audiences. How fiendish-looking? See for yourself!

The year was 2005, and remaking horror movies was becoming the dominant trend of the decade. Up to and including 2005, the decade had already seen remakes of "Willard," "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," "Boogeyman," "The Fog," "Dawn of the Dead," "Thirteen Ghosts," "The Ring," "The Grudge," and "House of Wax." All of those were prior to the reboots of "Halloween," "Friday the 13th" and "A Nightmare on Elm Street." Mining a previous generation's nostalgia was big business, and remakes — as an overwhelmingly common trend — wouldn't wane until the early 2010s.

British-born Andrea Riseborough deserves credit for her ability to seemingly morph into any character like a chameleon. With veteran TV director Michael Morris’ feature debut To Leslie the actress brings a tremendous level of sympathy to her West Texan title character. The story is quite straightforward, hinging upon Riseborough’s ability to carry a script with both hope and cruelty.
Once upon a time, Leslie was a young mother who won 190,000 playing the video lottery at her local bar. Years later, she’s strung out and smoking cigarettes down to the filters. When kicked out of the hotel she’s staying at, she moves in with her son James (Owen Teauge) with the promise to get clean. When a neighbor “parties” with her, he has no choice but to kick her out. Her next stop is a group of aging hippy relatives, Duch (Stephen Root) and Nancy (Allison Janney), who...

Ghostwire: Tokyo isn’t just developer Tango Gameworks’ long-awaited return to the horror genre after 2017’s underrated The Evil Within 2; it’s a pretty great excuse to check out some of the greatest J-horror movies ever made.
While Japanese horror films enjoyed a global “boom period” in the late ’90s and early 2000s (and we’ll certainly be talking about some of the movies from that era very shortly), some of the best horror movies of the last 70+ years are J-Horror films. The long history of Japanese horror movies includes quite a few films that truly challenged viewers just as they challenged the common perceptions of what horror cinema is capable of.
So far as that goes, it’s important to realize that this isn’t a list of the absolute best J-Horror movies ever made. If it was, I can assure you Audition would be somewhere on it. Instead,...

Hollywood and the West in general have been remaking some of the greatest Asian movies since the 60s, picking the most commercially successful and the most adaptable productions to bring to both American and worldwide audiences. A number of them were of equal or at least similar quality, with John Sturges’s “The Magnificent Seven” (based on “Seven Samurai”) and Sergio Leone’s “A Fistful of Dollars” (based on Yojimbo”) being some of the most prominent samples. At the same time, however, and particularly after the 90s, the quality of remakes decreased significantly, resulting in a series of remakes that can only be described as truly awful, even though, on occasion, they were directed by the same filmmakers who shot the originals. Here, we have included 15 of the worst ones, in random order.

Anyone tracking Andrea Riseborough’s career will notice a certain tendency to tackle dark material. That was certainly the case for “Here Before,” an unsettling thriller about a woman who comes to believe the reincarnated spirit of her daughter has moved in next door.
“It’s a huge mountain to climb, the journey of knowing what it’s like to have a grown child pass away,” she told IndieWire during a recent interview. “Stepping into what that might be like for a couple of months while making the film was certainly very difficult. It’s actually quite a lonely experience.”
But she quickly moved on to the next project — and the next one after that, and the next one after that. In total, Riseborough has completed seven films since pandemic shutdowns started in 2020. She only stopped working for three months. “In some ways, I feel safer at work than anywhere else,...

The very video that leaves a trail of deformed bodies in its wake is baked into the film itself, transforming the audience from impartial viewer to imminent victim of the cursed tape's supernatural powers. Showtime has added the third woman to its upcoming “Three Women” adaptation. Betty Gilpin will star opposite DeWanda Wise and Shailene Woodley, the network said Monday.
Gilpin will play Lina, a homemaker in Indiana who, after a decade in a passionless marriage, embarks on an affair that quickly becomes all-consuming and transforms her life.
The series, an adaptation of the bestseller by Lisa Taddeo, is described as an “intimate, haunting portrayal of American female desire” centered on three women “on a crash course to radically overturn their lives.”
Taddeo will serve as a writer and executive producer on the adaptation, alongside showrunner Laura Eason, Kathy Ciric and Emmy Rossum. Louise Friedberg will direct the first two episodes, which she will also executive produce.
Woodley will star as Gia, a writer grieving the loss of her family who persuades the three women to tell her their stories. The course of her...

While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.
Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.
Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

The Ju-On franchise, better known to Western audiences as The Grudge, is one of the most expansive brands in the history of the horror genre, spanning 20 years and encompassing thirteen movies, two short films, a TV series and even a video game. That’s an awful lot of content being wrung from a relatively thin premise, so it shouldn’t be a surprise to discover the law of diminishing returns set in a long time ago.
So far, there’ve been sequels, prequels, remakes and sequels to the remakes and reboots, with 2020 bringing a double dose of Ju-On. Netflix’s six-episode Ju-On Origins arrived in July to very little fanfare, while the fourth edition in the American series touched down in January to muddle the timeline even further and swiftly gain a reputation as one of the most dismal cinematic efforts of the year.

Hulu and Sony Pictures have released the first official trailer for “Happiest Season,” which stars Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis in a holiday-set romantic-comedy with an LGBTQ love story at the center of the plot. “Happiest Season” is the second feature from actress-turned-director Clea DuVall, who made a splash in her feature debut with the star-studded 2016 comedy “The Intervention.” Duvall co-wrote the script with her screenwriting partner Mary Holland, a comedic actress who appeared on “Veep,” in which DuVall famously played emotionless Secret Service agent Marjorie. From the looks of this trailer, that “Veep” comedic timing served both writers very well.
