A new study from McKinsey & Co. and non-profit organization Gold House found that while Asian and Pacific Islander representation in the entertainment industry has made significant gains over the past several decades, most Api consumers do not perceive Api representation in film and television as authentic or reflecting their own stories.
The report states that accurate Api representation in media could potentially lead to an additional $2 to $4.4 billion increase in industry revenues, as half of Api consumers would be willing to spend more money and time on films and television shows that more authentically represent their experiences.
Despite the abundance of content from the U.S. and abroad featuring Api characters and storylines, more than two-thirds of Api consumers are dissatisfied with the authenticity of their representation on screen; less than 30% feel properly represented in film and television. “East Bay,” a dark comedy film starring “Fresh Off the Boat” and “Crazy Rich Asians” star Constance Wu, has been picked up for North American distribution and world sales by Level 33 Entertainment.
The film won the audience award last year at the Cinequest Film and Creativity festival in San Jose. Level 33 plans to release it next month in North American theaters, ahead of a later digital outing.
Wu portrays the close friend of a man who feels he has let down his immigrant parents and, after a string of personal and professional humiliations, is forced to accept that he is a failure. His friends, an arts administrator, a guru and computer programmers, each have issues of their own and struggle with pressure to be happy and successful. As the man tries to get back on track, he has hallucinations that make him question reality.

‘Succession’ has gone out with one final bang: The HBO drama won two Writers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night — the most of any series — for best drama series and also for best drama episode. Creator Jesse Armstrong was on hand in New York to accept the award, while several of the show’s writers were also in LA to accept the honor.
This reps the final major awards show where “Succession” (which ended its run last May) was still eligible. Besides best drama, the show also won the episodic drama prize, for the episode “Living+,” written by Georgia Pritchett and Will Arbery.
The WGA Awards recognized the best of 2023’s television and film via its annual event held this year at the Hollywood Palladium for the West Coast edition and at New York’s Edison Ballroom for the East Coast ceremony.

Noah Cyrus’s relationship with Pinkus was kept under wraps until April 2023. Since then, the couple has announced their engagement and made several fashion-forward appearances at media events. Most recently, the 24-year-old singer and fashion designer went low-key with a date night at an LA Lakers basketball game. And by low-key, we mean Cyrus looked pretty unimpressed throughout the evening.

Niecy Nash-Betts, who recently won an Emmy for her role on Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” has signed on to host the Los Angeles portion of next month’s Writers Guild Awards. The 2024 event, which was pushed back in the wake of the Hollywood strikes, will take place on Saturday, April 14 at the Hollywood Palladium.
“A good writer is an actors’ greatest gift,” Nash-Betts said in a statement. Added L.A. awards exec producer Hugh Fink (“Saturday Night Live”): “Niecy Nash-Betts is the dream host for this year’s WGA Awards. Her brilliant performance in ‘Dahmer’ – as the courageous woman who helped take down a serial killer who ate his victims – is surprisingly a lot like negotiating with the AMPTP.”
Benn Fleishman of Avalon Harbor Entertainment is also a producer for this year’s WGA Awards in Los Angeles. Additional presenters scheduled to appear at this year’s L.

Last month, it was announced that writer/producer Judalina Neira is developing a TV series reimagining of the classic sitcom Bewitched for Sony Pictures Television, aiming to turn it into an “irreverent hourlong” show. NBC clearly likes the idea of reviving Bewitched, because now Deadline has broken the news that the network has their own “Bewitched-inspired” show called Something Wicked in the works, and this one already has a star attached: June Diane Raphael, who may be best known for playing the character Brianna Hanson for the 94 episodes that make up the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, which ran for seven seasons.
Raphael is also writing and executive producing Something Wicked with Dickinson creator Alena Smith. A multi-camera comedy, the show is described as having a Bewitched-type premise and will also serve as an homage to TV sitcom classics. Ryan Reynolds and Randall Park called back to a beloved moment from The Office in the latest teaser for John Krasinski’s new movie If. In the ad, Ryan Reynolds, who is also one of the film’s stars, appears backstage, speaking about the flick. Park then interrupts by taking the director’s chair and introducing himself as Krasinski, who wrote, directed and stars in If.
“Wait wait wait, hold on. What are you doing?,” asks Reynolds. Park keeps the bit going, saying, “I’m talking about our movie.” Reynolds responds, “You’re not John Krasinski. You’re Randall Park. John Krasinski is much shorter and less Asian.”
Reynolds then resorts to quizzing Park to prove he’s actually the director. Eventually, the Fresh Off the Boat alum announces that the sneak peek can wait until Sunday. The bit continues on throughout the mock behind-the-scenes featurette, with Park standing in for Krasinski.

Filmmaker, actor, chef and television personality Eddie Huang (“Boogie,” “Fresh Off the Boat”) has signed on to direct a new documentary exploring the rise and surprising fall of Vice Media.
In a dramatic turn of events, the digital media company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May after boasting a valuation of $5.7 billion in 2017. Earlier this month, Vice Media Group announced a new restructuring plan and layoffs in the wake of its bankruptcy and $350 million asset sale.
Huang has an unique perspective on the story: for four seasons, he hosted “Huang’s World” on Vice, which chronicled his travels around the world to learn about local history, culture and food.
“For the majority of my late-20s and 30s, I loved Vice,” Huang says in a statement announcing the project. “It gave a generation of talent the opportunity to make things they didn’t have anywhere else.”
He continues: “Whether that was because we were weirdos,...

After self-releasing three specials and amassing more than 17 million TikTok fans, Matt Rife is beyond gratified to have scored a Netflix special. “You work your entire career to feel accepted by a network standard,” Rife tells Variety, noting it was both arduous and creatively fulfilling to produce his YouTube specials — “Only Fans,” “Matthew Steven Rife” and “Walking Red Flag.”
Rife made his television debut on MTV’s “Wild ’n Out” and has had guest appearances on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Fresh off the Boat.” He’s currently in the middle of his sold-out ProbleMATTic World Tour.
“Natural Selection,” shot at Dar Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., hits Netflix on Nov. 15. In typical Rife fashion, the comic does not hold back while discussing social media trolls, his fear of the dark and discovering his dad’s porn.
Congrats on getting a Netflix special. That’s a huge accomplishment after putting together all of your previous specials.

There are plenty of exciting sword fights in Blue Eye Samurai, Netflix’s impressive new animated series (it’s earned 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), but there’s much more in this compelling, critically acclaimed new show. To start, it’s more adult than family-friendly, with graphic sex as well as the expected violence. Moreover, the story about Mizu (Maya Erskine), a despised and disguised– mixed-race young woman and sword master, is also completely original, based neither on a manga, comic, novel, or folk tale. The Canadian-American series was created and written by married couple Amber Nozumi, who has Japanese ancestry, and Michael Green. The voice cast, except for Kenneth Branagh, who plays an American character, is all Asian-American, including Star Trek’s George Takei, Masi Oka (Heroes), Randall Park (Fresh Off the Boat), Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Ming-Na Wen (Mulan), and Harry Shum Jr. (Grey’s Anatomy). Fresh Off the Boat is a comedy series that follows the adventures of an immigrant Taiwanese family. The show is based on the life of Eddie Huang, drawing some inspiration from the events in his 2013 biography. Fresh Off the Boat set a number of records for the Asian-American community and this is one of the reasons the show experienced a lot of success during its six-season run. As a family-based show, the delightful Fresh Off the Boat TV show addresses a lot of hard-hitting themes about family. It also does this with other equally important themes. However, most of...

More than three and half years have gone by since it was announced that Krysten Ritter would be re-teaming with Don’t Trust the B- in Apartment 23 creator Nahnatchaka Khan (who went on to create Fresh Off the Boat after Don’t Trust the B- ended) for a dark comedy series based on author/stand-up comedian Charley Warady’s novel Serial Killers Anonymous. But while Khan has gone on to direct two feature films since that announcement – the rom-com Always Be My Maybe and the time travel slasher Totally Killer – there hasn’t been any further word on Serial Killers Anonymous. The Hollywood Reporter decided to ask Khan about the project while she was doing press for Totally Killer, and she told them there’s still a chance the dark comedy series could happen.
Khan was asked, “In 2020, it was reported that you and Krysten Ritter were reuniting for a dark comedy/serial killer series.

Totally Killer director Nahnatchka Khan has quietly become one of the preeminent comedic voices in town.
As the creator of Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 and Fresh Off the Boat, Khan took her sensibilities to feature films in 2019, helming the well-received Netflix romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe. The rom-com, which starred Khan’s frequent collaborators Ali Wong and Randall Park, was embraced by 89 percent of critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and managed to make an impact in an overcrowded streaming market. Keanu Reeves’ role as a version of himself and his subsequent kiss-blowing meme certainly factored into Always Be My Maybe’s success, and it’s become one of the go-to examples of how Netflix has kept the rom-com alive in an era where the major studios no longer prioritize the genre.

If you look at Nahnatchka Khan's filmography, you won't see many titles suggesting she'd be a good fit for a bloody slasher movie. However, you will see plenty of titles that suggest she'd be ideal for a time traveling comedy about mothers and daughters, and how culture has shifted over the past 30 years. The fact that she can deliver a nasty slasher sequence in the new horror comedy "Totally Killer" will leave fans of her past work a little dizzy.
"Totally Killer" is built around one heck of a high concept pitch: What if a modern teen (Kieran Shipka), grieving the death of her murdered mother, goes back in time to the '80s to stop the killer's initial reign of terror, lower the body count, and ensure her mom's survival in the present? It's "Back to the Future" with a body count, leaning on '80s tropes without ever getting too nostalgic.

Ever wish Back to the Future was more like Scream? Was your main beef with Halloween: “Hmm, not enough time travel?” Then Totally Killer is for you.

It’s the spooky season, and teen thriller Totally Killer looks to satisfy that itch for scares. But what appears to be a horror film spoof at first, suddenly morphs into a mash-up of Halloween and Back To The Future, when a sixteen-year-old girl goes back in time to the 1980s to solve a Halloween triple killing by the “Sweet Sixteen Killer.”
A Halloween – Back To The Future mash-up isn’t a bad idea but that idea gets bogged down in 1980s nostalgia that sucks the energy out of the horror scares, and even the humor, like a vampire. Do you long for the ’80s? Even if you don’t remember them? Well, someone wanted to revisit that era of big hair, big shoulders, garish fashions and John Hughes films, so we get Totally Killer.

Wednesday night on “The Masked Singer,” judge Ken Jeong got choked up after hearing Gazelle belt out “The One That Got Away” during the “NFL Night” episode. The notoriously bad guesser started out his comments by declaring, “Okay, real talk. You don’t hear me talk like this a lot, but I never get so moved by an actual voice.” He admitted that he doesn’t “have the ear” that his fellow panelists Nicole Scherzinger, Robin Thicke and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg have, and so he “might be wrong,” but that he thought Gazelle could be actress Constance Wu.
“It sounds like someone who I genuinely love who is a dear friend of mine,” Jeong said as he started breaking down in tears. “And I think just hearing this voice, this may be Constance Wu. And even if it’s not you, I just want you know I’m thinking about Wu.

When the trailer for Totally Killer was released a few weeks ago, there was a bit of an uproar on social media claiming that the film was ripping off The Final Girls (review). While there are undoubtedly similarities between the two films, Nahnatchka Khan‘s horror comedy has far more in common with something like Christopher Landon’s Happy Death Day films (specifically Happy Death Day 2U) than that 2015 film, aiming for a more absurdist, comedy-forward take on the “time travel slasher” sub-genre that apparently exists now. It’s also an incredibly charming little film that wears its influences on its sleeves and has so much fun with them in the hopes that you will too.
