Has a comeback ever been more poorly timed? Approval ratings for Justin Timberlake have dipped lower each year, coming to a head when Britney Spears’ memoir The Woman in Me was released a few months ago and unveiled intimate drama from her relationship with the “Cry Me a River” singer.
It’s not like his reputation had been particularly stellar over the last several years. A reckoning with the way the media treated Spears in relation to her once-beloved ex overlapped with a reckoning for Janet Jackson, who had to...

In January 2021, Dumb Money producer Aaron Ryder was in the midst of a mandatory two-week quarantine in Montreal, and to pass the time, he began to track the ever-evolving situation with GameStop’s stock. The struggling video game retailer became the apple of the internet’s eye, as Redditors on the WallStreetBets subreddit and YouTube investors like Keith Gill’s Roaring Kitty (portrayed by Paul Dano in Dumb Money) were leading the Gme stock short squeeze in an effort to give hedge fund short sellers a taste of their own medicine.
Around the same time, Ryder’s company, Ryder Picture Company, had just launched and entered into a first-look deal with MGM, and as all this drama was still unfolding with GameStop’s soaring stock, the Oscar nominee became a part of the deal for author Ben Mezrich’s GameStop-related book proposal that would later become The Antisocial Network. The setting of David Fincher’s Mank largely resides in the confines of Herman J. Mankiewicz’s bedroom and its surrounding desert vistas. The man who is about to pen what many consider the bible for the greatest film ever made was sent there—banished, really—by Orson Welles in order to keep a low-profile from the Hollywood press, and to keep “Mank” out of boozy trouble. Thus his North Verde ranch is a location of moody interiors and desolate skies, and it’s framed by Fincher with the kind of reverence one might expect for an actual bible.
It’s not hard to guess why Fincher feels this way. This is the site, in Mank’s telling, of Citizen Kane’s genesis: the birthplace of a movie which has been declared twice by the American Film Institute to be the greatest film ever made, and which in 1941 was revolutionary.

Canadian broadcast journalist Marci Ien will join Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government. Ien, who ran for the Liberal Party in Toronto Centre, won Monday night and will fill former Finance minister Bill Monreau’s seat, CTV News reports.
The long-time broadcast television reporter beat out Annamie Paul, Benjamin Gauri Sharma, Brian Chung and Dwayne Cappelletti among other candidates. Ien brought in 41% of the votes, nine more than Paul’s.
Ien began her career at Ontario’s Chch-tv in 1991 on the news and general assignment desks. In 1997 she brought her reporting talent to CTV. Before beginning hosting the daytime talk show The Social in 2017, Ien served as a reporter for the network and a co-anchor on CTV’s Canada Am.
According to the Toronto star, Monreau’s August resignation came abruptly following reports of tensions with Trudeau over massive spending on Covid-19 pandemic relief.

Jennifer Garner is taking some hair tips from another Southern gal: Reese Witherspoon.
The Peppermint actress, 46, tried out Witherspoon’s new book, Whiskey in a Teacup, and found some helpful advice about how to hot roll hair, which she experimented with in a video shared to her Instagram on Monday night.
Garner grew up in West Virginia while the Big Little Lies actress was raised in Tennessee.
“‘To this day it’s the only way I know how to do my hair,'” Garner read from the book. “Me too! ‘I can’t blow out my hair,’ me either. ‘I can’t straight iron it,...
