Chicago – In a manifestation of his most famous catchphrase, filmmaker Alex Winter, also known as Bill of “Bill & Ted” fame, wants us to “be excellent to each other” when it comes to our interaction on a certain online video sharing website. He ponders all the implications in his new documentary “The YouTube Effect.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
In a stylish and vital breakdown regarding the growth of YouTube, owned by Google (which is not well known), Winter tells a story of a noble 2005 origin aspiration that lost its way due to its sheer popularity, and is now dangerously used for propagating radicalism and affecting elections. Google is the number one most searched website in the world. Number two? YouTube … and they’re both owned by the same business. Using a stylish palette, director Winter tells a cautionary tale, that could explode into a “it may be too late” scenario. While Facebook and Twitter...

Evan Rachel Wood, Josh Gad and Anthony Carrigan will star in “The Adults,” a new crime drama from Alex Winter.
“The Adults” follows a sister and brother, Megan and Nathan (Wood and Gad), whose lives are completely upended when they discover a dead body, long buried in their parent’s basement. That revelation sends them on an odyssey of crime and murder.
“I’m thrilled to be working with Evan, Josh and Anthony on this darkly comic crime drama, which takes a sly look at the challenges we all face today, trying to survive in the modern world,” Winter said.
CAA Media Finance, which is arranging financing for the film, will represent the domestic sale, while Rocket Science will launch international sales at the upcoming European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin.
The film is being produced by Winter, Scott Kroopf of Many Rivers Productions, and Russell Hollander. It is executive produced by Connie Tavel.

[Editor’s Note: “The Phoenix Act” was reviewed for the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it screened only one of its two parts. The second part was not provided for critics ahead of release.]
Evan Rachel Wood has talked about being a survivor of domestic violence for several years. Her story on its own is powerful. Documentarian Amy Berg’s two-part series, “Phoenix Rising,” places Wood in the driver’s seat of her own narrative, showcasing the actor’s rise as an activist as well as her struggles to cope with the abuse she alleges at the hands of Brian Warner, aka Marilyn Manson.
“It’s hard for me to even relate to her,” Wood says while looking at photos of her younger self in the first half of the documentary, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. “Phoenix Rising” attempts to tell two stories while maintaining respect for the seriousness of both. In the first episode, clocking in at over an hour, the audience hears Wood declare that shock-rocker Marilyn Manson is the man she claims abused her during their four-year relationship. (Wood...

“The theme that emerged was the idea of universality,” reflects director Alex Winter about making “Showbiz Kids.” For our recent webchat, he continues, “No matter how different our experiences were in the industry, whether we were acting at the turn of the centenary or the present day with 20 million Instagram followers, the experiences were very similar.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Showbiz Kids” is an HBO documentary film which tells the stories of current and former child stars. It features interviews with Wil Wheaton, Todd Bridges, Evan Rachel Wood and others. It was a personal project for Winter, who was a child star himself on Broadway before his breakout film role in “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.” He reveals, “The film is somewhat autobiographical. Alex Winter, who directed the documentary “Zappa” and recently reprised his role in the “Bill & Ted” franchise, has set his next project: a doc about the history of YouTube and the video platform’s impact on society.
“Mass Effect: The Story of YouTube” is Winter’s return to films about the tech space after he got his start in documentaries with 2013’s “Downloaded,” about the rise and fall of Napster, and 2015’s “Deep Web,” a look into the hidden dark web. His new documentary explores the humble beginnings of YouTube in the attic of a pizzeria to its explosion on the world stage; the platform brought in $5 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2020 alone, with more than 30 million music and premium paid subscribers.
The film will also examine YouTube’s role in shaping the cultural and political discourse, examining present issues such as radicalization, surveillance, algorithmic capitalism, the...

Alex Winter’s “Zappa” is an odd, occasionally jarring documentary, but it wouldn’t make sense for it to be anything else. The film about the iconoclastic musician Frank Zappa sometimes feels like an autobiography from beyond the grave, sometimes playing like a heartfelt tribute and sometimes adopting Zappa’s rhythms and style to be purposefully disorienting. It’s a Zappa-esque concoction — which, of course, is exactly what it ought to be.
The movie was originally scheduled to premiere at South by Southwest in March, but it was pushed back when that festival was canceled. It now opens in theaters and on-demand on Nov. 27 after a special theatrical event on Nov. 23; instead of being the first film in a busy 2020 for Winter that also included directing the HBO documentary “Showbiz Kids” and acting in “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” it’s the last.

This story about Alex Winter first appeared in the college issue of TheWrap magazine.
Before Alex Winter played Bill S. Preston, Esq. in “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey” and the recent “Bill & Ted Face the Music,” and before he directed a string of documentaries that include “Napster,” “Showbiz Kids” and the upcoming “Zappa,” he was an NYU film student struggling to pay his way through school.
But as an experienced child actor, Winter paid the bills by appearing in lots of commercials, doing voiceover work and even making the occasional movie.
During his freshman year in 1983, Winter also met fellow student Tom Stern, with whom he’d direct films all through school and into his professional life afterward. The summit of their NYU work was “Squeal of Death,” a 15-minute short about a hapless, squawking criminal that Winter describes as “a magnum opus of insanity.

The first thing Keanu Reeves said to me when we sat down to do an interview on the Phoenix set of “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” in April 1987 was simple.
“If I’m really boring, just print anything you want,” he said. “Make it interesting.”
In fact, I didn’t print anything — not because he was boring, but because I wasn’t in Phoenix 33 years ago to write about Reeves and his co-star, Alex Winter. At that point, the two actors weren’t very well known, and the movie itself was years away from becoming a cult hit that spawned two sequels, including the new “Bill & Ted Face the Music.”
Rolling Stone had sent me to Phoenix to cover the opening-night show on U2’s tour to promote the band’s breakthrough album, “The Joshua Tree.” But a friend of mine was the unit publicist on “Bill & Ted,” and...

Exclusive: It won’t be absolutely free, but a new Frank Zappa movie is coming to North America. Magnolia Pictures has acquired rights to Zappa, a documentary directed by Bill & Ted’s Alex Winter that will hit theaters and VOD on Thanksgiving weekend.

It explores the private life behind the musical career that never shied away from the political turbulence of its time.
Zappa features appearances by the musician’s widow Gail Zappa and several of his musical collaborators including Mike Keneally, Ian Underwood, Steve Vai, Pamela Des Barres, Bunk Gardner, David Harrington, Scott Thunes, Ruth Underwood, Ray White and others.

HBO's newest documentary, Showbiz Kids, examines the dark reality of child stardom through the lens of those who lived it. Evan Rachel Wood, Jada Pinkett Smith, Wil Wheaton, Todd Bridges, Mila Jovovich, Henry Thomas, Mara Wilson and the late Cameron Boyce paint a sobering picture of the price they paid to pursue their dreams (and in some cases the dreams of their parents) in Hollywood. "I gave up my childhood for this industry, and it wasn't my choice," Wheaton, most notable for his roles in Stand By Me and Star Trek: The Next Generation, said. Similarly, Wood remembered a desire to simply play with her friends, noting, "...it was apparent...

In “Showbiz Kids,” a rambunctious and revealing documentary about what it’s like to be a child star in Hollywood, Henry Thomas, from “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (he was 10 then — he’s now 48), tells a terrific story about what it feels like to learn that your days as a movie star are numbered. Early on, we see a tape of his audition for “E.T.,” and it’s stunning — he acts with such authentic tearful woe that you want to applaud. There are clips of him on the set, taking direction from Steven Spielberg, and he recalls how insecure he felt around the other kid actors. Even after “E.T.” became a phenomenon, and he was sought out for the lead in films like “Cloak & Dagger,” Thomas was never entirely sure he knew what he was doing.

You’d think it would be easy to make a movie about the dangers of child stardom and the pressures put on children who want or are pushed to become actors at a young age. All you’d have to do it present a chronicle of the many young actors whose careers and sometimes lives melted down prematurely in the wake of early success.
But while Alex Winter shows us some of those cautionary tales in his new HBO documentary “Showbiz Kids,” they don’t occupy center stage. His focus, instead, is on a group of smart and articulate former child stars, some of whom still have careers in Hollywood – and while you wouldn’t think of Evan Rachel Wood, Jada Pinkett Smith, Henry Thomas, Wil Wheaton or Milla Jovovich as casualties by any means, the stories that they tell make “Showbiz Kids” even more powerful than it would be...
