Onis are scary and horrendous creatures. In ancient Japanese folklore, people even associate Oni with murder and cannibalism. I’m not sure why this isn’t the case in Tomotaka Shibayama’s My Oni Girl, but it’s probably for the better. In this movie, the Oni only has a horn to resemble the tales, and that horn is far from scary and even feels cute at moments. The movie follows a shy teenage boy breaking free from his shackles when he meets an Oni girl. Together, they embark on a mystical journey that changes both of their lives.

What happens in the movie?
Hiiragi Yatsuse is a kind-hearted boy who finds it difficult to make friends, even though he always helps his classmates, hoping they will befriend him. Hiiragi goes to extreme lengths to help people who don’t care about him, and he even agrees to...

After watching the anime My Oni Girl on Netflix, I felt a strong connection to the character of Hiiragi Yatsuse, a high school boy who is a people-pleaser and always considers others’ feelings instead of his own. As someone who tends to keep their feelings bottled up inside, I found his character very relatable. My Instagram handle is actually Wallflower, so you can imagine how much I could connect to this teenage boy. His life changed when he met Tsumugi, an Oni girl searching for her mother, who had abandoned her in childhood. As Hiiragi accompanied her on this journey, his character evolved, and he started to listen to his own feelings. But there are lots of dangers as they go into the hidden village where the Snow Gods have been attacking Onis. Even though he was not an Oni from birth, for hiding his feelings all along, he was...

Others that made the cut included The Monkey King, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the Oscar-nominated Nimona, The Sea Beast and Back to the Outback.

Jeff Daniels makes his TV return in the David E. Kelley series “A Man in Full.” That six-episode series is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Tom Wolfe. Per a press release: “When Atlanta real estate mogul Charlie Croker faces sudden bankruptcy, political and business interests collide as Charlie defends his empire from those attempting to capitalize on his fall from grace.” The series will also star Tom Pelphrey, Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, William Jackson Harper, Aml Ameen, Sarah Jones, Jon Michael Hill and Chanté Adams.
Additionally, comedy fans can get excited for a new special series from John Mulaney. The comedian is hosting a multi-night event, “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA,” that looks to be part interview show and part man-on-the-street hijinks.
