Surprisingly entertaining Norwegian take on Cannonball Run
OJT18 August 2014
Børning, which is Norwegian slang for "burn out" is a Norwegian take on the Cannonball Run-films with a touch of Fast & Furious, or really more like the recent Need For Speed. It succeeds surprisingly enough to be very entertaining, though a couple of major flaws ruins some of the experience.

You'll get amazing driving scenes and a scenic and beautifully shot film, with kind of a cheesy dialog due to a script which could have been better. The film resembles the recent Need for Speed with it's story, but this film has got fresher filming and more humor.

While writing this, five days after the premiere, the film is already a big domestic hit in Norway, outselling the blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy six times at the box office. The film is going to be one of the biggest hits in Norway this year. This due to both good marketing, and a solid cast of Norwegian screen actors as well as a couple of comedians like Otto Jespersen and Atle Antonsen.

In a traumatic race, the car mad Roy, which runs Stallion Parts and is not the best of fathers. He loses due to his daughter meddling with the car in some kind of revenge. Soon he is challenged in a illegal race almost through the length of Norway, from Oslo to the North Cape - way over 2000 kilometers.

A lot of great cars, with American muscle cars in the main roles, with BMW's, Audi R8, and Japanese drifting cars in supporting roles, but there's also small parts for the old Volvo and Granada.

Well, the race is soon on, and the interest you have put into it, stalls a bit on the side story about the 14 year old girl. It's used in character development, but thee main problem is that she's now way up to the rest of the ensemble in the acting skills. We simply don't believe in her motor skills, and not in her dialog.

But the film manages to give a fresh car driving movie with some great filming, great use of camera angles and some beautiful scenery along the way up to the North Cape. The film both serves as good entertainment as well as an ad for Norwegian nature.

The film doesn't take itself too seriously, as the car milieu in Norway doesn't either. This film will be immensely popular in the street race milieu, probably not only in Norway. Horsepower, loud engines, burn outs, drifting along side with testosterone, bickering, rivalry and stupidity, combined with real humans and real characters.

The film is 70% great, and the parts which could have been better is script and acting. The technical parts function, as well as the cars, amazing driving scenes and the humor. You don't have to be interested in cars to watch this, but it'll sure help you in loving it.

Entertaining tribute to car films.
Edillion7 November 2016
So, i'll start this review by mentioning that this movie is not as serious as the trailer would imply.

This movie felt like a tribute to old car chase films, there's hints and nods to movies such as Dirty Mary crazy Larry and of course Fast and furious among others. The movie isn't taking itself seriously, which in my opinion made it easier to watch. Along with great scenery and some well built, tastefully modified cars.

It also makes fun of Scandinavian car fans, especially the young enthusiasts, this was great fun to watch.

If you're looking for an Oscar winner, look further. If however, you like cars, and car films, you should definitely see this one.

A hilarious and charming action comedy with lots of heart, great scenery and nice driving scenes. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wading and a little more wading. Quite successfully though!
tuomas_861 February 2021
Cars and wading are always an interesting equation. A little skeptical of starting to watch a Nordic production wobble film, which really surprised.

The plot now is nothing very miraculous. Interesting and funny characters, though not terribly deep into these. The style comes to mind in Taxi movies, but the whole is something completely different. Sure, the plot is also pretty predictable, but I didn't let it interfere.

An entertaining and interesting whole, without any strange plot. I don't know if I can call a plot a movie where you essentially drive from place a to place b, even if things happen sometimes.

Cars and Norway (in that order)
peefyn20 November 2016
I'm not one for car/racing movies, so a big chunk of this movie did not really appeal to me. It's not a long movie, and a lot of it is cars driving on roads. The scenery is often nice, though.

But other than all the shots of cars driving (with some minor action in them), I like how this movie acknowledges the fact that it is Norwegian, and uses it to its advantage. It can't compete with Hollywood blockbusters in their game, but it can be something that's unlikely to come out of Hollywood. Some of this are just references that only Norwegians will understand (like a reference to Flåklypa Grand Prix), but it also shows itself in the mentality of the characters, and in some of the settings.

Norway's take on Fast and Furious?
city_mt18 August 2014
After enjoying the trailer a lot I came to see this film on cinema with rather high expectations. Although the first 20 minutes weren't as engaging and exciting as I was hoping for, the rest of the film more than made up for it, making it actually proceed my initial high expectations.

First of all, the film has a great bunch of thrilling car scenes, especially exciting having in mind that they're taking place at relatively narrow Norwegian roads. The unlikeliness of this actually happening in Norway, the soundtrack and the numerous funny comments throughout the race, made it well worth the while.

Børning is packed with famous Norwegian actors like Anders Baasmo Christiansen (check out Kon-Tiki), Sven Nordin (Elling) and Otto Jespersen (Trollhunter), all delivering top notch performances, securing believability to a rather unrealistic story. Especially Christiansen, the main actor, gave this film a lot of emotional depth. I found my self rooting for him, even though he's not the kind of person you'd easily like. Otto Jespersen, on the other hand, delivers the best one liner I have experienced in film. I'm sure many Norwegians will agree.

This film is one of the best Norwegian films I have seen, and it's not a coincidence it is topping the box office in Norway, ahead of for instance films like Guardians of the Galaxy. If you, like me, love cars, speed and comedy with a "Fast and Furious"-worthy soundtrack, this film won't disappoint!

Reckless driving glorified
the_oak20 December 2020
It doesn't get more redneck than this. These are the guys who ruin the grass and flowerbeds in the roundabouts and in villages across Norway and keep people awake in the night. Much worse they kill pedestrians and wildlife crazy enough to get anywhere near the roads. I seem to remember real life mutants like this arranged mayhem trips to Germany, but the german police put the foot down and banned the brain less convoys. Good riddance!

Unexpectedly brilliant!
nbnbfan16 August 2014
One of the few Norwegian movies that achieves a score higher than 5. In one and a half hour they made a laid back skater interested in cars, and made me laugh throughout the entire movie. Probably movie of the year for my sake, and I really hope they're making a sequel, cause this story can definitely be extended!! The music is perfectly matching the action in every single scene. Speaking of music, if someone has a list of the songs used in this particular movie, I'd be happy to get it :) Cause I'm in love with some of the songs used! With all of that being said, there's a ton of great movies coming out soon, but I highly doubt any of them will be able to top this one. "Børning makes the smell of Norwegian films disappear in the exhaust!"

BORnING
stermix5019 August 2022
After some friends moved to find their luck in Norway, we were awed with their photos and description of what could be the happiest country in the world. I was even convinced to take some Norwegian lessons.

Having seen the amazing Ragnarok series, and liking most of the FF franchise, we thought what better than a mix.

Well, it started strangely with 2 drivers exchanging facial expressions that somehow were supposed to be the driving force behind a simplistic but promissing plot: a fast road trip across Norway.

Instead of the promised, we get to see only roads by night (supposed covering most of Norway). Very few day shoots. Nothing of what our friends described. A cheap boring journey across emptyness. At the end, some forced feelings can't save the day.

Thrilling movie
jorge-solvang22 November 2014
It's not like an epic movie, but for what it is, it is well made. The young one is watching it for a second time in 12 hours. He is like tied to the screen and you can't talk to him.

Fast cars, lots of noise, pretty girls and cheesy one liners. What more is there to want from a car film? As an adult and not particularly interested in cars, I was still drawn to the film and enjoyed it a lot.

Even my cohabitant who is really not into cars and isn't exactly in the main focus groups, so this is safely one to watch with the whole family.

The ending leaves room for a sequel so who knows if we'll see a second film next year?

Finally a really entertaining movie from Norge
jakubgilbert14 December 2016
For first I just started to watch this film to improve my Norwegian language skills. I have seen lots of Norwegian films during in the last two years since I have started to learn the language, and to be honest the most of them was not so mention-able (expect the dramas and the comedies)... After the reviews I have expected some sort of a mix of the Frech taxi and the American Cannonball Race filmed among the beautiful Norwegian landscape. Actually I worried a bit, because I afraid it will be just a Nordic remake of those too film. But the Børning was just right. It did not wanted to be "more" than a comedy with good stunt driver work and with some gasoline-addict drive movie. I enjoyed it, it was absolutely entertaining. I would like to emphasis the genius of the actors. Lots of well- known Norwegian actors, for ex. Anders Baasmo Christiansen's (he can be familiar for the fans of the most talented Norwegian TV-series DAG) or Otto Jespersen (the "Trollhunter")... In addition the fun and the "car-porn" sometime the move has bit more deep meaning. I mean the relationship between father and daughter or the importance of friendship. Vaules that we generally overlook. I recommend the movie for wider range of audience, not just the hardcore fans of the Scandinavian films. To summarize it (in Norwegian to stylish) : Bra jobb! Det var gøy!:)
