Deliriously Brilliant: 'Fever Dream' Masterfully Blends Dark Comedy with Poignant Drama
poordegenerate2 May 2024
"Fever Dream," a Saudi movie that masterfully blends dark comedy with drama, offers a compelling glimpse into the complexities of modern life in Saudi Arabia through a surreal narrative that both entertains and provokes thought in Social Media fame. The film, directed with a keen eye for both the absurd and the poignant, takes viewers on a bizarre journey that mirrors the disorienting effects of a feverish dream.

The performances are outstanding, particularly the lead actor, who portrays a drunken legend footballer's daughter with a perfect balance of bewilderment and resilience, making her a relatable and sympathetic protagonist. The supporting cast also shines, bringing to life a variety of quirky characters that add depth and humor to the story.

Visually, "Fever Dream" is striking. The cinematography skillfully captures the surreal quality of the experiences, using vibrant colors and unconventional camera angles to enhance the dream-like atmosphere. The soundtrack complements the visual storytelling beautifully, weaving traditional Saudi music with modern sounds to reflect the film's blend of the old and the new.

Overall, "Fever Dream" is a 3 hour bold and innovative film that stands out for its originality and insightful commentary on life in the social media in Saudi Arabia. It challenges viewers to think critically about the celebrities around them while providing a thoroughly entertaining cinematic experience.

While the pacing may feel deliberate at times, it ultimately serves to deepen the film's impact, allowing viewers to fully absorb its thematic richness. This movie is a valuable addition to Saudi cinema.

This movie is a valuable addition to Saudi cinema, blending comedy and drama in an innovative way. The film showcases an interesting collaboration between a retired football star and his daughter, providing a deep look into the impact of fame and social media on family relationships.

On the other hand, it could be said that some narrative sections were longer than necessary, affecting the film's pace. However, this point does not diminish the profound message the film carries, which is worthy of appreciation. Overall, "Dreams of the Era" is a bold and thought-provoking cinematic experience that highlights contemporary issues with artistic finesse.

A good all-out movie that tips its toes on a lot of topics

Warning: Spoilers
The movie was excellent, but there were a few plot developments that slightly disappointed me:

1. The mother's death: Although it was hinted early on that she had died, the lack of traditional mourning phrases (they never said "allah yer7amha") led me to believe she might reappear later in the story.

2. Hakeem's backstory: While I enjoyed Hakeem's character development, I wish there had been more clues throughout the movie to hint at his motivations and plans. A prior scene hinting at his thoughts on revenge or his deeper intentions would have added depth to his later actions.

3. The finale: The realism maintained throughout most of the movie kinda faltered at the end. The scene where an intoxicated Samado drives to the airport seemed out of sync with the logical flow of the rest of the film. While I appreciated that Hakeem's escape added tension, the airport confrontation felt forced.

But still, the story's logicality was really good, almost nothing felt forced (except for the airport confrontation as I said), and they used their 3.25 hours of runtime wisely. I love how they showed the characters' insecurities and personalities in conflict with each other, I loved how political the movie was from all the plots and schemes all around them, it was really really good. Also bravo on the writers for not having the "driver" killing anyone in the warehouse because it wouldn't have made sense, I know of many films that kill characters without reason at the end just for the shock and emotional value, good thing that they kept the movie logical during the warehouse.

In conclusion, the movie's acting, writing, drama, and comedy were outstanding, making it a must-watch. The minor logical gaps do not detract significantly from the overall quality of this three-hour film.
