Despite “Barbie’s” recent box office domination, the history of toy-to-film franchises has not always been easy. Often dismissed as a cash grab (“Battleship”) or popcorn fare, turning toys into critically and commercially successful content is no skate in the park.
For Mattel and co, there was another toy that had to walk before “Barbie” could fly: Lego. Written and directed by Lord and Miller, “The Lego Movie” proved that movies based on toys could be so much more than a 90-minute commercial when it was released ten years ago. Although snubbed at the Oscars (not even garnering a nomination for best animated film), the Warner Bros. pic — like its eventual successor “Barbie” — was a hit with both audiences and critics.
Buoyed by “The Lego Movie’s” success, a string of spin-offs and sequels quickly followed – “The Lego Batman Movie” and “The Lego Ninjago Movie” in 2017 and “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part...

Look out, Hollywood, Steven Spielberg’s daughter, Destry Allyn Spielberg, is making her feature directorial debut with one of the biggest badasses in the game, Giancarlo Esposito! According to Deadline, Esposito is joining Spielberg’s upcoming thriller, Please Don’t Feed the Children. The script hails from writer Paul Bertino, with Michelle Dockery, former NFL tight end Vernon Davis, Joshuah Melnick, Emma Meisel, Dean Scott Vazquez, Zoe Colletti, Regan Aliyah, and Andrew Liner making up the ensemble cast.
Pandemic-sensitive viewers beware: the plot for Please Don’t Feed the Children revolves around a group of orphans heading south, searching for a new life after a viral outbreak decimates their country’s adult population. Unfortunately, the new home is hard-fought, as danger lurks everywhere. Jason Dubin produces through Perry Street Films with Josh Kesselman and Michael Hagerty.

So, enough yapping, here are the ten highest-grossing films based on toys.

9. Mars Attacks! (1996) Original Domestic Gross: $37,771,017
Adjusted Domestic Gross: $78,056,645
Earth is invaded by Martians with unbeatable weapons and a cruel sense of humor.

Exclusive: John Whittington has signed with Grandview.
Whittington co-wrote the mega-hit Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Paramount with Jim Carrey starring and Original Film producing. The film broke the opening weekend record for video game adaptations set by its 2020 predecessor, earning 26.5 million on opening day.
Most recently, John co-wrote DC League of Super-Pets for Warner Animation Group, which debuted #1 at the box office over its opening week July 29th. He also wrote True Fan, which topped the Black List in 2015, based on the true story of baseball fan Steve Bartman who, after interfering with a foul ball during a playoff game, was tortured and stalked by die hard Chicago Cub fans for potentially costing them their first National League pennant since 1945. He also a key architect to the Lego movie universe, having co-wrote The Lego Ninjago Movie and The Lego Batman Movie, the latter of which grossed over $311M worldwide.

Michael Peña's pretty much done it all: he plays a DEA agent on "Narcos: Mexico" but he's also appeared in kid-friendly flicks like "The Lego Ninjago Movie" and "My Little Pony: The Movie." He's even in "Ant-Man" and its sequel, "Ant-Man and the Wasp" - and he may also appear in the forthcoming "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," which will be part of Marvel's recently unveiled Phase 5 (though he's yet to be officially confirmed for that one). Either way, his variety of work includes content that a very special fan can tune into: his son!
That also means Peña and his wife, actor, screenwriter, and producer Brie Shaffer, can bring their son along to movie premieres, which they've done. The whole family steps out for events together from time to time, but both Peña and Shaffer remain very private. Here's what we do know about Peña's son and the family's dynamic,...

[Warning: The interview above and following story contain spoilers about the Season 1 finale of “The Afterparty.” Read at your own risk.]
Dave Franco‘s obnoxious pop star Xavier is the victim on “The Afterparty,” so he doesn’t have his own episode told in its own genre like the other characters do. But that means the actor gets to play, as he puts it, “eight shades of douche” throughout the Apple TV+ whodunnit’s first season. But which Xavier is the douchiest? “I would say the douchiest is in Ike [Barinholtz]’s episode, kind of the action episode, where I’m like aggro douche,” Franco tells Gold Derby (watch above). “Next on the list is maybe Ilana Glazer’s episode where I’m kind of tail-between-his-legs douche. And then I’ll go to Sam Richardson’s episode, where I’m kinda kill-’em-with-kindness douche. Maybe my favorite was the flashback episode where I’m vulnerable, insecure douche. Dave Franco’s character Xavier plummets to his death within the first minute of “The Afterparty.” But there’s plenty more to learn about the dweeb-turned-pop-superstar, whose origins and motivations unravel across eight episodes of Chris Miller and Phil Lord’s whodunnit, which premiered on Apple TV Plus on Jan. 28.
While the series only gives viewers a small taste of Xavier’s music, now fans of “The Afterparty” can enjoy four fully produced songs from the fictional artist on his brand new EP, “R.I.P. Xavier.”
On TikTok, users can join Franco in a duet on “Do Wet,” which features profound lyrics such as: “Champagne pouring (I like to do wet) / Hit it in the morning (I like to do wet).”

Exclusive: Disney Branded Television has ordered Primos, an original animated comedy series created and executive produced by Natasha Kline. The story is based on Kline’s childhood experiences with her extended multicultural Mexican American family. No network has been announced as of yet.
Each half-hour episode of Primos, produced by Disney Television Animation, will be comprised of two 11-minute stories featuring Tater, an eccentric 10-year-old girl with big dreams and, unbeknownst to her, a certain “it factor” that makes her exceptional. When her 12 cousins (“primos” in Spanish) move in for the summer, they help her discover just what it is. Tater’s aspirations and larger-than-life imagination are seen via entries in her super-secret diary, which turn her deepest thoughts into grandiose animation sequences.

The Oscar race for animated short reflects the zeitgeist and the ascendance of streaming. And all five nominees explore the turmoil of a divided country and world, where the need for unity is the best salvation for attaining happiness and closure.
The favorite is Netflix’s first animated short, “If Anything Happens I Love You,” about a grieving mother and father visited by shadows of themselves and their deceased young daughter (who was the victim of a school shooting). The monochromatic, hand-drawn short, directed by Will McCormack (who wrote the original “Toy Story 4” script with Rashida Jones) and Michael Govier (“Conan”), boasts an illustrated style that represents haunting memories, bolstered by an all-female animation team supervised by CalArts graduate Youngran Nho. Laura Dern executive produced the short and Maryann Garger (“The Lego Ninjago Movie”) produced with Gary Gilbert (“La La Land”), Gerald Chamales (“The Irishman”), and Govier.

“K-Pop: Demon Hunters” is underway at the Oscar-winning studio behind “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse,” from directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.
Kang, whose credits include “The Lego Ninjago Movie,” is mounting the project as an homage to her Korean pride and the wildly popular K-Pop music she grew up with. The movie is described as an action adventure that follows a world-renowned girl group, as they balance their lives in the spotlight with their secret identities as demon hunters. It will be set against a colorful backdrop of fashion, food, style and music.

In the first major crossover between WarnerMedia’s HBO Max and siblings TNT, TBS and TruTV, the ad-supported linear cable networks will carry four days of curated HBO Max programming over the Thanksgiving holiday. The stunt is clearly designed to promote HBO Max’s programming and draw new subscribes to the streaming platform.
Warner Media brass have said that HBO Max is a main priority, and the other divisions of the company have been pitching in to support it. When WarnerMedia earlier this year pulled the plug on DirecTV’s Audience as an original programming network, it was transformed into an HBO Max preview channel.
Beginning Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26 through Sunday, Nov. 29 each network will air its own themed content from HBO Max.
On Thursday, TNT will feature DC movies, including the network premiere of Aquaman, as well as the first episode of season one of HBO Max’s original series Titans.

There are only two months left to go in this truly hellish year and relatively new streaming service HBO Max is trying to make the best of them. While most other streamers recover from Halloween and get prepared for Christmas, HBO Max is using November 2020 to fill out its servers.
Things are pretty light not the new original series front this month with only Industry (Nov. 9) and His Dark Materials season 2 (Nov. 16) making a splash. But the streamer has a couple of notable original films to complement them. Between the World and Me, based on the book by Ta-Nehisi Coates, arrives on Nov. 21 and Melissa McCarthy comedy Superintelligence arrives on Nov. 26. That’s not even to mention two intriguing projects that don’t have dates yet: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion Special and The Mystery of Db Cooper.

Netflix has acquired its first animated shorts for Oscar consideration. There are three: “If Anything Happens I Love You,” an elegy about grief following a school shooting, directed by Will McCormack (who wrote the original “Toy Story 4” script with Rashida Jones) and Michael Govier (“Conan”); “Canvas,” about a Black painter who seeks to rekindle his artistic passion after the passing of his wife, directed by former Pixar animator Frank E. Abney III (“Soul”); and “Cops and Robbers,” directed by Arnon Manor (indie web series “Mondays”) and Timothy Ware-Hill (“Kinky Boots” national tour), inspired by Ware-Hill’s poem about the racially motivated murder of Ahmaud Arbery earlier this year in Georgia.
“Our goal is to bring our members best-in-class animation in all types of formats — features, series, adult animation, anime, and short form,” said Gregg Taylor, Netflix’s director of animated features. “Animated storytelling is most compelling when it can transport,...

With streaming services growing like weeds and a new one on the way this month in the form of Quibi, there’s never been more pressure on Netflix to remain our platform of choice. As a result, it’s making original TV series and movies at an accelerated pace that we can barely keep up with. There’s only so much time in the day! Please, think of us as the Dom Toretto of streaming – we live our lives a quarter mile at a time.
As a result, we’re putting together a monthly list of everything we know is coming to Netflix UK, so you can plan ahead and make informed choices. Use your spare time wisely, and you’re likely to experience …well, let’s just say ‘slightly fewer regrets’. We don’t want to go overboard.

Disney are well known, in recent years especially, for their live-action (and I use that term loosely) remakes of classic animated films from their catalogue. We’ve seen Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, Dumbo, Cinderella and others hit cinemas in recent years to mixed results, and now, with the debut of their streaming platform Disney Plus, we have seen another added to the list, Lady and the Tramp. Now, I’m a fan of the original 1955 animated classic. It’s cute, iconic and beautifully animated, a real smash hit from Disney history. I was curious when I heard about this live action remake, and when we finally signed up to Disney Plus when it landed here in the UK,...

Lego is in talks with Universal Pictures to form a new partnership to develop films based on the beloved building block toys, an individual with knowledge tells TheWrap.

Rideback, the production company founded by “The Lego Movie” franchise producer Dan Lin are in talks to remain the producers in any new deal, according to a report The Hollywood Reporter.

Universal Pictures is in talks with the Lego Group to develop new feature film properties based on the popular block toys, numerous sources close to the pending deal told Variety.
Producer Dan Lin, who has made several films based on the childhood staple at Warner Bros., is expected to remain on future projects despite his overall deal at Warners.
The pact with Universal is a much broader use of the intellectual property than the previous films, sources said, which saw actors like Chris Pratt and Elizabeth Banks bring life to geometric heroes in a world populated by Legos.
Among the ideas Universal is floating is a reimagining of its own content library through the toys, sources said. “Jurassic World,” for instance, saw a spinoff Lego series made and sold globally in 2019, which aired in the U.S. on Nickelodeon. There are also concepts floating for live-action hybrid features.
A spokesperson for Universal had no comment.

In the age of streaming media, what’s the contemporary answer to the cheap, disposable, direct-to-video Disney sequels that used to clog up VHS shelves in decades of yore? The answer may look something like “Lady and the Tramp,” the latest of many nominal “live-action” remakes of beloved titles from the studio’s animated canon — but the first to bypass theaters, bowing directly on the company’s glossy new Disney+ VOD platform. The difference is felt, which is not to say this largely conservative update of the 1955 puppy-love romp is appreciably worse than its big-screen 2019 predecessors. It’s as creatively anemic and blandly calculated as, say, this summer’s billion-grossing “The Lion King,” with which it also shares some hinky technical issues: Suffice it to say that even on a smaller screen, attributing anthropomorphic qualities to photoreal critters remains a Disney stumbling block.

No race for the animated feature Oscar has been as dominated by sequels since the category’s debut in 2001 as this year’s. Leading the conversation are big-studio front-runners “Toy Story 4,” “How to Train Your Dragon 3” and “Frozen 2.” Lower down the card, “Secret Life of Pets 2,” “The Lego Movie 2” and “Angry Birds 2” are also vying for a nomination — testing the Academy’s appetite in this category for sequels, which pose unique challenges for filmmakers.

Saturday Am Update: The weekend's new releases are performing mostly as expected, but before we get to them we have to mention WB's Joker, which brought in an estimated $17 million on Friday, to kick off what is looking like a possible $60 million second weekend, signaling a drop that could be less than -40%. A strong performance and a clear sign this film is resonating with audiences.
As for the newcomers, Uar's The Addams Family leading the week's new titles with an estimated $9.6 million on Friday, looking to finish with a $32+ million three-day performance. The film scored a "B+" CinemaScore.
Behind it, Paramount's Gemini Man finished with an estimated $7.5 million Friday, heading toward a $20+ million three-day. The film also received a "B+" CinemaScore from opening day audiences.
Further down the list is Lionsgate's Jexi, which managed $1.14 million on Friday and is expected to finish around $3-3.5 million for the weekend.

Exclusive: NBC has put into development Wildfire, a drama from Bad Teacher creator Hilary Winston and Sony Pictures TV, where Winston is under an overall deal.
Written and executive produced by Winston, Wildfire is timely given that we are at the height of the California wildfire season and crews in Northern California are currently battling a blaze in San Bruno Mountain despite unprecedented preventive power outages.
Echoing last fall’s devastating Paradise fire, in Winston’s Wildfire, when a devastating wildfire hits the idyllic community of Whispering Bells, Calif., some are spared, others are not. The real danger, however, lies in the small town’s secrets smoldering just below the surface.
This marks a first one-hour drama sale for Winston who so far has worked exclusively in half-hour comedy. Another veteran comedy TV writer, D.J. Nash, successfully made the switch to drama two years ago with ABC’s A Million Little Things.

Last weekend saw Joker deliver the largest October opening weekend of all-time. However, the overall weekend top twelve was still down -15% compared to last year, which saw not only Venom deliver what was, at the time, the largest October opening weekend, but A Star is Born also opened with nearly $43 million, both en route to $200+ million domestic performances. At the same time, 2018 is still trailing last year's overall yearly performance by nearly -6% and while this weekend offers three new wide releases, they aren't likely to turn the tide. Paramount's Gemini Man has already failed to impress critics despite it's technological wizardry and the Lionsgate comedy Jexi is arriving virtually out of nowhere with little-to-no overall awareness. Only Uar's animated feature The Addams Family seems poised for any kind of solid breakout, timed well to play over the next couple of weeks and into Halloween, but it will...

“Abominable,” the animated family film from DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studios, earned $650,000 in box office previews on Thursday from 2,950 screens. It opens on 4,242 screens this weekend.
“Abominable” is the sole new wide release this weekend and could contend for the number one movie in America depending on how “Downton Abbey” performs in its second weekend. Universal is handling domestic distribution, and both the studio and independent trackers are projecting an opening between $17-20 million for the film.
That would put it close to films like “The Lego Ninjago Movie,” which also opened to $20.4 million in Sept. 2017, and DreamWorks’ “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie,” which made $23 million. Those films though skipped preview screenings. The previous DreamWorks release, this spring’s “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” raked in $3 million in Thursday previews behind a $55 million opening weekend.

The first animated film of the fall season, and the first in over a month, arrives this weekend in the form of Universal, DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio's Abominable and it's looking to top the weekend box office. Behind it is last weekend's strong opener Downton Abbey, while Roadside Attractions looks to crack the top ten with their moderate release of Judy starring Renee Zellweger. DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studio's Abominable serves as the first animated feature since the release of The Angry Birds Movie 2 back in mid-August and it's opening in a hefty, 4,242 locations. Heading into the weekend, the studio is anticipating an opening anywhere from $17-20 million and that lines up with what we've been looking at as the film enters the weekend with very little heat behind it. So far this month, we have seen two smaller releases — “Hustlers” and “Downton Abbey” — carve out a niche for themselves among the moviegoing populace and show signs of legging out into October despite next month’s crowded slate. This weekend, Universal will try to make it three with the DreamWorks/Pearl animated film “Abominable.”
With “Joker” expected to challenge for the biggest October opening ever next week, all other studios are steering clear of putting out a wide release this weekend. But an animated film for families isn’t going to be competing for its key demographic with an R-rated take on a comic book villain. And since the $75 million film is co-financed with Pearl Studio — who is handling Chinese distribution — the threshold to profit for Universal is lower.

Ties to the title run deep for Theroux: His uncle, Paul Theroux, wrote the novel on which the new series is based, about an inventor who moves his family to Latin America after getting fed up with American consumerism. But when the stubborn father’s behavior becomes unpredictable and belligerent, their new jungle paradise turns dark.
Neil Cross (“Luther”) is attached as the series’ showrunner, and he’ll write the first episode alongside Tom Bissell. Rupert Wyatt, Helen Mirren (as “Mother”), and River Phoenix as their son Charlie,...

Roy Lee, a producer on the new “It” films, “The Lego Movie” and many others, has been accused by a former associate of fraud and sued for tens of millions of dollars in damages regarding fees and credits across dozens of Lee’s projects in a complaint filed to L.A. County Superior Court Wednesday.
John Powers Middleton, a former associate of Lee’s and also a co-producer on “The Lego Movie,” says in the lawsuit he lost out on millions of dollars of fees as well as executive producer credits due to Lee’s “fraud and deceit.” Middleton is suing Lee for fraud, breach of contract, unfair competition, unjust enrichment and accounting.
Middleton says that he had a deal with Lee and his company RL2 Films between 2010 and 2016 in which he would get 20% of fees and executive producer credits on films if he were to cover half of the overhead expenses.

Exclusive: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have hired well regarded production executive Aditya Sood to become head of film for their Lord Miller banner. The move to secure the former Genre Films president comes at a key moment for filmmakers coming off the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Later this month, they will meet with all the major studios before deciding where to make their first overall movie deal. This comes after the duo set their TV operations at Sony Pictures Television in an epic-sized five-year deal last April.
Sood’s challenge will be to lead their motion picture group ambitions, with an emphasis on developing original and existing IP projects and championing fresh voices. Sood will lead a motion picture group staff that includes longtime film executives Will Allegra and Rebecca Karch who have been upped to Senior Vice President and Vice President, respectively.
The Sood hiring seemed destined to happen at some point.
